Reception class teacher and eco coordinator Darryl Cottingham said: “Having the allotment dug over is brilliant as now the gardening club can get down to the fun stuff and plant some seeds. “We’ve been harvesting our produce,

Co-op staff also shifted buried tractor tyres to open up the reception class’s outdoor space. “We haven’t got much outdoor play space for reception children and the tractor tyres were taking up a big chunk of it. Now they’re gone it’s really opened up the area and we can start planning, as we’re hoping to redevelop it,” added Darryl.

JOLLY HOCKEY STICKS News in brief Lincoln Roses Hockey Club is reporting an increase in members – and is putting the rise down to school PE lessons. Local sports provider Hurricane Sports has delivered hockey lessons to over 1,000 children in primary and secondary schools in the area since September. Managing director, Gary Johnson, who is also a PE teacher and development officer at Lincoln Roses, said: “We deliver hockey in schools as part of the PE programme or extra-curricular activity. “All sessions are geared to specific ages: Quicksticks for primary school children, In2hockey for 11 to 14-year-olds and we have recently introduced Rush Hockey for over-14s.” He said Lincoln Roses has seen membership increase by 25%. “It’s not just about PE. Children are learning maths skills, social skills and team-building.” www.hurricanesports.co.uk

HEALTH BOSSES ACT ON MEASLES Lincolnshire parents and carers are being urged to ensure their children are fully immunised against measles.

In the first three months of this year, there were five confirmed cases of the disease in the county. In the whole of 2012, there were eight confirmed cases. Lincolnshire County Council has launched a campaign to offer the MMR jab to children aged 10-16, in an attempt to prevent an outbreak. Lincolnshire’s director of public health, Dr Tony Hill, said many people underestimated the effect of measles, which could be “severe”.

...Funding for school sports Primary school children are to get the chance to experience a wider range of sports, thanks to extra Government funding.

From September, each primary school in Lincolnshire will get a slice of a £300 million Olympic Legacy Fund to spend on coaching lessons or equipment. All schools with 17 or more primary-aged pupils will receive a lump sum of £8,000 plus a premium of £5 per pupil. Smaller schools will receive £500 per pupil. That means an average-sized Lincolnshire primary school will benefit from an extra £9,000 a year, over the next two years. The money will go directly to primary school head teachers, who will have the freedom to choose how they spend the money, as long as it is within the realm of PE and sport.

For example, they could choose to hire specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE; set up sport clubs; provide cover so primary teachers can embark on professional development in sport; run sport competitions; provide places for pupils on after-school sport clubs or holiday clubs. Parents will be able to compare sports provision between different schools as the schools will be required to publish details of what’s on offer on their websites. After year one, schools inspector Ofsted will assess the first year’s expenditure and its impact.

The sport funding will be paid in each of the two academic years 2013/14 and 2014/15.

Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, a Government-funded body, is providing support for schools in deciding the best way to spend the money, sourcing coaches and look at how to develop PE in schools as a whole.

Whether the Government will continue to fund schemes after 2015 is not known.

Multi Sport Pro is one provider that has already received enquiries from schools looking at how to spend the additional funding.

...Funding for school sports Director Stuart King says: “We will be able to meet schools’ needs for all areas of the National Curriculum, offering games, gym, dance, athletics and swimming. “It may suit a school to work with one provider that can offer all its needs. “The new funding is very positive. It builds on the Olympic legacy to inspire a generation of youngsters. It will open up the opportunities for primary school children to take part in more sport. We will run lessons during teachers’ scheduled PPA (planning, preparation and assessment) time, as well as a multitude of extra-curricular sports clubs.” Multi Sport Pro has just become registered as an Ofsted official childcare provider. Stuart adds: “It’s a big professional step forward for us. Parents now know that we are accredited, so we meet all the correct policies and procedures. “It also means we can accept childcare vouchers, so working parents who receive these can use them on MSP Holiday Camps.” Bespoke Medals & Pin Badges

investing to get kids active Synergy Sports Coaching already works with several primary schools in Lincolnshire. Head coach Lee Turnbull says: “I have 12 professional staff working with me and we either cover PPA or go in to schools to issue training to teachers to heighten the quality of PE lessons. “We are passionate about sport, about getting children active and making sure they stay healthy. There is a lot of concern about obesity in school children and young people and schools generally are doing a good job in helping to tackle this problem.

“We can run school sports days, tournament matches, team games and sporting challenges.

“When we go into schools, we widen the range of sports, so the children experience lots of other games, not just netball, cricket and football. Getting a variety of lots of different sports builds different skills.

“We’re excited about the new funding. We have created a package for schools that is sustainable, so schools will still be able to deliver a high quality scheme after the twoyear funding period.”

Molly’s guide to...

Children are often very keen to walk, cycle or scoot to school – now it’s time for parents to get involved too. With almost 30,000 school journeys being made by car each day in Lincolnshire, it’s perhaps no surprise that during the Easter holidays, the roads at commuter time seemed much quieter. 30% of children aged between 2 and 15 are classed as obese, the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions are increasing and traffic congestion causes problems not only around school gates but in local towns and cities. Travelling on foot, by bike or on a scooter, even for just one journey out of five, could impact on your health, your children’s health and the health of local environment.

...education

In the last six years, Lincolnshire County Council has invested £1.3million into promoting sustainable travel to and from school. A number of innovative and exciting projects have been established such as virtual bike races, walk once a week campaigns, Bikeability cycle safety training and more. Over the last few weeks, schools across the county have been taking part in The Big Bike Race; a fun programme which turns the number of bicycles in the cycle shed into virtual miles along a virtual journey. At the end of May, schools will be taking part in the Golden Boot Challenge as part of ‘Walk to School Week’, and in June there will be a number of campaigns to encourage pupils to cycle during ‘Bike to School Week’.

Sustainable travel to schools Last year, 40,000 pupils from more than 200 schools took part in Lincolnshire County Council initiatives to encourage sustainable travel. 100% of schools in Lincolnshire have a nationally accredited School Travel Plan in place, and additional grants of more than £350,000 have been awarded to schools to improve footpaths, purchase cycle storage and install parent waiting shelters. Fiona Baxter, Sustainable Travel Officer at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “Lincolnshire County Council have invested time, resources and funding into supporting and encouraging sustainable travel to schools in Lincolnshire, because we believe it can make a real difference. “Children are often very keen to walk or cycle to school but it can be difficult for parents to travel sustainably when it’s perceived as ‘easier’ or ‘quicker’ to drive. We want to encourage parents to leave the car at home at least once a week and remember the joys of walking, cycling or scooting to school!” For more information about school travel initiatives either this academic year, or next, please contact Fiona on 01522 555 214 or email fiona. baxter@lincolnshire.gov.uk. Eight schools in the LN6 postcode received £38,000 to purchase secure cycle and scooter storage to encourage sustainable travel.

Improving access to LN6... Schools in the LN6 area of south Lincoln are particularly being encouraged to travel sustainably through Access LN6 – a £6.5 million programme to improve sustainable transport options in the area. Sustrans Schools Officer Vincent Gibson has been working closely with schools in LN6 to raise awareness of walking and cycling, teaching children how to cycle safely and encouraging them to ride regularly, maintain their bikes and travel sustainably in the future. Vincent said: “Cycling at an early age means you’re more likely to continue riding in the future, and if your parents cycle, you’re more likely to think of it as ‘normal’. Cycling has great health benefits, it’s more sustainable to the local environment and it’s a great way for children to gain independence.” As part of Access LN6, Vincent would like to visit schools in the LN6 postcode. For more information contact Vincent on 07799 065 050 or email vincent. gibson@sustrans.org.uk.

Lincoln BIG

...children’s festival FANTASTIC FESTIVAL IS READY TO RETURN Lincoln shoppers and tourists are in for a real treat this summer when scores of youngsters will be showcasing their music, drama and dancing skills.

Lincolnshire Children’s Festival will be making a comeback – from Monday, July 1 to Friday, July 5, 2013 – and it promises to be a ‘must-see’ attraction. Thirty primary schools from across the county have signed-up to be part of this colourful festival, and their pupils have already started polishing their performances. Organiser Lincoln BIG said the event has been running for eight years and it offers families, shoppers and members of the general public a superb opportunity to see local children’s skills, first hand.

Events & Promotions Organiser Rachel Hanson said: “It’s brilliant! We have received bookings from schools in Lincoln, Grantham, Louth, Boston and Sleaford areas. “This is such a popular event, all the available slots have been filled and we have a waiting list of schools, hoping for a last-minute place” People can catch the festival action in Lincoln High Street on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday – July 1, 2, 3 and 5 – from 10am to 2pm, and in Castle Hill on Thursday, July 4, from 10am to 2pm. “Lincoln BIG provides schools with the necessary stage area, along with a sound system and sound technicians so they can just turn up and concentrate on their performance. Schools can also apply to BIG for help with their transport costs,” said Ms Hanson. “Each school is allocated half-an-hour for its performance, half-an-hour to watch another school’s performance and half-anhour for a drama workshop.”

The Newark Academy

...planning for summer Plan ahead for the summer break – free activities at The Newark Academy

With Easter done and dusted, and the May half-term looming, thoughts once again turn to school holidays, and the eternal question: “How will I keep them entertained??” The question is never more loaded, than when considered in the context of the long summer break. Six long weeks, of sunshine, picnics in the park, perhaps a break away… then what to do with the other three and a half weeks!

Newark and Sherwood Sports and Arts Development team, plus other specialist coaches and community workers to ensure a high quality experience for all abilities. The ‘SPLASH’ Summer School will be hosted at The Newark Academy Lilley and Stone site, to take advantage of the fantastic facilities which include an all-weather pitch and sports fields; a dance/drama studio and art studios.

The Newark Academy ‘SPLASH’ Summer School 2013, running 19th-23rd August, may have the answer to filling at least one of those weeks. It will enable students in years 5 and 6 to get a taste of The Newark Academy and meet staff, students and peers. Embracing the theme of a ‘SPLASH’ of colour, a range of inspirational arts and sports activities will culminate in a celebration showcase at the end of the week.

Principal, Karine Jasper adds, “Whether or not you are considering The Newark Academy for your child at Year 7, all are welcome at this fun community event. If we are your choice for secondary education, then it’s a great way to allow your child to become familiar with the school and our members of staff before September”.

“My name is Zhu Xiaohua but you can call me Sally!” This is a typical introduction to a surrogate English family by a Chinese student who comes to study at Lincoln College. The International team actively recruits overseas and this September we are expecting an increase in the number of overseas students, particularly those from China, who are applying to study on our Level 3 ‘A’ level or business courses. Good pastoral care for these young students (some as young as 16 yrs old) is very important to Lincoln College. For many years we have been supported by local families who provide safe and welcoming “homestay” accommodation. This year we are looking for

22

more families to join our scheme. The “host family” or “homestay” receives £100 a week to provide accommodation, breakfast and an evening meal for the student. However, there’s a bit more to it than providing a roof over their heads! Western culture can be quite a surprise to our newcomers and we need caring individuals willing to help the student settle into a completely different way of life and support them through their studies. We would love to hear from anyone keen to know more about hosting. Families with young children are particularly welcome! Molly’s guide to...

It is probably one of my more vivid childhood memories. At least once a year, the whole school would queue up in the corridor and wait to be seen by the ‘nit nurse’ - who would poke around our heads looking for the tell-tale signs of an infestation of head lice.

24

tel: 01522 535068

...we have visitors!

Nit nurses were phased out in the 1980’s and 90’s as their efforts were seen as intrusive and embarrassing for children, but for many parents this has been seen as a great loss. It is usually on my way into school and passing the classroom window that I spot the ‘We have Visitors!’ sign. I smile inwardly at the tactful way in which schools now let us know that if we haven’t been checking our children’s hair recently, then now is the time to start doing so!

Keeping our children healthy We must all at some time have had the horror of a head lice experience. With it comes the dilemma of reporting the problem to school! You know it is absolutely the right thing to do in order to raise the alert for other parents to check their children’s hair and contain the problem, but no matter how often you hear ‘they only go for clean hair’, line, it is still incredibly embarrassing to have to report to school that your child has nits! Parents are now clearly the best-placed people to check their own children for head lice, and this is the most effective way of dealing with them. There are a number of over the counter products that can be used to deal with nits but they are expensive and the nits are starting to become resistant to them. So what is the answer? Some parents tell us that they have a ‘nit night’. This is a regular routine that is usually carried out on a Sunday after bath time. It involves applying conditioner to wet hair and combing through from the hair roots with a nit comb. A regular routine like this can be an effective way of keeping the nits at bay.

molly’s guide • issue 6 • Spring 2013

www.mollysguide.co.uk

The facts… • Many primary school children are affected by head lice every year • Head lice are usually grey or brown in colour but can take on the colour of the host’s hair. • They do not always cause itching • Head lice cannot jump – they spread from one head to another through ‘head to head contact’ • Clean or dirty hair, the head louse does not care! • You will find them mostly on the lower back of the head and behind the ears.

Prevention… • Wet comb regularly as part of a normal hair care routine • Inspect your child’s hair for head lice every day if you can but at least once a week

KATIE SCOTT I have always loved baking and when I started making birthday cakes for my children, I spent more time planning the cakes than their parties! During my time as an Accountant, I spent a lot of time researching and learning my craft in the evenings. With a husband working abroad, I have a lot of time at home so am often happily found baking and hunched over my studio table creating flowers or figurines out of sugar. Earlier this year I decided to cake full time and took a break from accountancy. My business Cocoa Cupcake is growing and having a job with flexible hours plus working from home allows me to enjoy my girls and find a better balance…Having said that I’m still known to pull all nighters to get a cake finished! All cakes are made fresh to order so sometimes working hours can be unsociable. I have a head full of cake ideas and love when I get the opportunity to be creative.

...food for life

The Food for Life Partnership (FFLP) is a network of schools and communities across England committed to transforming food culture. Established as a national programme in 2007 and recently recommissioned for a second year they are revolutionising school meals, reconnecting young people with farms and inspiring families to cook and grow food. FFLP is delivered in Lincolnshire by Local Programme Manager in conjunction with Food in Schools Sustainability Advisor. Together they are supporting Lincolnshire schools as they progress through the bronze, silver and gold. Over 250 Lincolnshire schools are enrolled, of which 61 are awarded, with one gold! FFLP are running free courses and a former dinner lady and founder of FFLP recently led a session for midday supervisors, highlighting the importance of their role in food education. All this fantastic work was recently celebrated at Doddington Hall when 12 schools received their bronze award. Richard Cumbers (Public Health Directorate) said “We have re-commissioned FFLP as they have proved to be a proactive strategic partner in our approach to tackling childhood obesity in Lincolnshire. They continue to deliver an excellent programme that schools love, backed up by a sound evidence base”.

...start your adventure

stagecoach

Now that spring is finally here it’s time to get out and about around Lincolnshire. There’s so much to see and do with the county packed with beaches, shops and great attractions. But it can often be a pain to get there, and expensive with it. Let’s face it no one likes being cooped up in the back of a car for long periods and the costs of parking and petrol only add to the hassle. Using the bus is a great way to add to your day out as the adventure starts as soon as you climb on board. Unlike the car there’s room for the kids to stretch out and move, and with most long distance buses being double deck you’ll enjoy an unrivalled view all the way to your chosen destination. You’ll also be doing your bit to protect the environment as the average bus journey produces only half the CO2 of using the car.

molly’s guide • issue 6 • Spring 2013

It’s great value too, with a Stagecoach Family Day Out Ticket costing just £16.50 no matter how far you travel and how much you use the bus in the day. The Family Day Out Ticket can be used by five people a maximum of two can be adults.

Honey Bee (my main dog ) and I are overjoyed at the arrival of Spring! In fact our whole pack of dogs are excited!

Gone are the winter coats (full of poo bags) and gone are the fleece lined gloves (useless for dog treats). Out come the shorts, the sunglasses, the desperate need to absorb all and every last ounce of sunshine and if the dogs are lucky their running harnesses come out.

beach without spending much but having loads of fun!!

You see for us and many other dog owners our dogs are part of our family and we tend to do most things together, like a trip to the pub or a visit to the seaside. Spring is a time to go have a new adventure with your best pal and maybe try something different. Add the children into the mix and you can have a full day of adventure in the woods or at the

Honey Bee and I were out walking the other day and we saw a 7-8 year old little girl training her tiny Jack Russell Puppy with the help of her mum. The scene was the picture of innocence and just shows how dogs and children can mix so well in this world. Having a mini adventure with your dog is a great way to train them and it works far better than any class because you are engaging with them. Plus the kids can be involved too so pack the lunches and load the car because there is an adventure just around the corner for you and your family.

Molly’s guide to...

Cool parents? Are you one? If so then please read something else. This article is not for you. Seriously. My target market is normal people with a sense of humour. Cool parents cannot laugh at themselves, there’s no place on this page for people like you.

36

tel: 01522 535068

...Daddy Day Care

In fact here’s your checklist. Answer ‘no’ to all of the next three questions and you can stay. Answer yes to one or more then retreat to your ‘glamping’ caravan or whatever you do in your spare time because this article will go over your head. We, the normal ones, will be laughing at you, not with you so it’s not fair. Question one: Have you bought your toddler a Ramones T-shirt? Two: Have you taken a child under four to a music festival? Three: Have you forced your little one to sit through an entire leg of the Tour de France live on Eurosport, even though they are too little for a bike and may think lamb-chopped medal machine Sir Bradley Wiggins is actually an extra from the Muppet Show? Yes to any of those and you should go now.

email: info@mollysguide.co.uk

I hate cool parents. They are trying too hard. Would I buy my boys a Ramones T-shirt? No, not until they were old enough to tell me the significance of their debut album and could name all the (deceased) members in the order of which they died and cause of death. They are not Ramones fans, they are nearly four. They wouldn’t look cool, they would ridiculous. I was invited to a music festival by a fellow parent, I said yes until I found out they were taking their toddlers. Don’t get me wrong, I love loud music, I love beer, I love partying in fields on day-long benders with my mates and collapsing into a tent when my body cannot take anymore. But anyone who wants to be a cool dad and take their kid, forget it. Standing at the

molly’s guide • issue 6 • Spring 2013

back with a three-year-old on your shoulders wearing ear protectors? One word: utterly regrettable. OK, two words. You’d be telling yourself you were having a special time with your child as you watched me and my mates getting smashed and REALLY having a special time - a well-earned break from the exhausting work of raising kids. And those of you pushing sporting experiences down toddlers’ throats before they can even talk, well, who is that for? I’ve seen the pics on Facebook of the tots in Lincoln City kits. Uggh. The only positive is that they are not Man Utd kits. To those of you who have made it this far, congratulations, you are normal. I can even forgive that you put pictures of your dinner on Instagram or Tweet about the weather. My parents didn’t dress me in punk t-shirts, take me to rock festivals or force me to watch the World Cup Final in 1978. And I’m alright.

And if you made it this far without thinking ‘actually it’s time little (insert middle class name from the Mini Boden catalogue here...) explored the art of live musical performance in a field this summer’ then you too are probably alright too. We’ll probably bump into each other by the swings at the park, enjoying, you know, normal stuff.

Holy Trinity Summer Fair – Newark Saturday 6th July, 11am-2pm.

Our annual Summer Fair will be held again this year, on our school field. This is the biggest single fundraiser our school holds and is always a day to look forward to. As well as the traditional attractions such as tombola, Hook a Duck, Guess the teddy’s name, bouncy castles and slides, there will be a fabulous raffle with good quality prizes, donated from the local companies who support us. Refreshments will be on sale, including tea, coffee, cakes and freshly cooked food from the BBQ. There will also be Polish food available and a licensed bar. If that wasn’t enough, there will be live entertainment from local dance schools, including the Caroline McManus School of Irish Dancing. Come along and enjoy the fun! (Don’t be put off if it’s raining! We’ll just move it all inside!) Boundary Road, Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG24 4AU. 01636 689177
