Previewing 2013

2013 Team Preview Coming off their first playoff appearance in 15 seasons, the Chargers look to continue to build on last season’s success once again in 2013. Brian Casey returns for his fourth season as the ACC Head Football Coach, and for the first time since the 1996-1997 seasons, the Chargers will look for back-to-back post-season trips. 13 starters return, along with another 8 individuals who saw significant action a season ago are back for the ‘gold & blue’ in 2013. Add in a class of juniors that won a conference championship as sophomores in 2012, and Casey believes this talented group has the needed size, speed, experience and depth to compete in the SCC Gold. “I think we have the talent to take that next step as a program this season,” Casey said. “We have a lot of hard work ahead of us, but I couldn’t be happier about the work we have done and improvement we have seen over the past nine months to get to this point. I am excited about this team and this upcoming season.” The Chargers, entering their final season as a member of the Suburban Christian Conference before joining the Metro Suburban Conference in 2014, will once again have their work cut out for them this fall. Non-conference match-ups with two improving programs, Oostburg (WI) and (Chicago) Bogan will provide early season tests before the start of conference play. Both Immaculate Conception and Montini (5A State Champion) were playoff teams from a season ago, while Chicago Christian, St. Edward, and Marmion Academy, all figure to be much improved in 2013.

Offense The Chargers ‘Double Wing’ will add a few new wrinkles for 2013, but the wealth of experience that returns from a season ago will look to keep the offense on track. Six starters return on the offensive side of the ball including running back Brian Bohr and lineman Alec Licar who both earned All-Conference Honorable Mention honors last season. Bohr, back for his third season in the Charger backfield, rushed for 852 yards and 6 touchdowns in 2012. He will be joined in

the backfield by Julian Rios who returns after rushing for 411 yards and 6 touchdowns on just 37 carries a season ago. Matt Schaefer looks to settle into a full-time role in the backfield for the Chargers this fall, after he inspired the Chargers as the emergency quarterback at the end of last season. Cody Ekstrom and Roman Padilla have also been impressive in camp and will get carries in 2013. After losing Matt Rahn to a torn ACL in the summer, the Chargers will turn to Kyle Reilly at the quarterback position in 2013. Reilly, who learned the offense last season after transferring into ACC, performed well in summer passing tournaments and throughout summer camp. Schaefer will once again serve as the backup for the Chargers. The Chargers have improved depth at the receiver/tight end position where Sean Anger returns after posting an 11.0 yard per catch average in 2012. Jordan Audiffred-Zauner has improved tremendously over the off-season to earn a spot opposite the 6’3” Anger. Add in speedster Hunter Fiorito, who transferred into ACC last fall and the emergence of Colin Baillie and the Chargers have a new dynamic weapon to the offensive attack. Mario May, Sean Tobin and Zach Thomas add depth on the perimeter. As with any offense, the success will start with the offensive line, and the Chargers seem to be in good shape heading into the 2013 season after paving the way to a school record 2,629 yards rushing a season ago. Along with Licar at left tackle, ACC returns Tony Hizo and Mikey Malawski at the guard positions, both who earned All-Conference Special Mention honors last season. Eduardo Gonzalez and Mike Shanahan have both showed flashes of greatness during camp at center and right tackle respectively. Chris Nilo, Danny Mowka, Brendan Filip, Jeff Kus, and Tommy Olson will also provide depth to an already talented position group.

selection from a year ago, registered 83 tackles, including 9 stops for a loss. Twice in 2012 he was named defensive ‘Player of the Week’ for the Chargers. Holzer, who suffered a torn ACL after week 6, returns after notching 46 tackles and a sack in 2013. Karlo Valenzuela makes the move from inside to outside linebacker this fall, he started all 10 games for the Chargers a season ago. Sophomore Ben Ariano has impressed the coaching staff this summer at inside linebacker to earn a fulltime spot on the varsity. Sean Tobin and Matt Schaefer will also see action in the second level. The defensive backfield will feature a good combination of experienced players and fresh faces for the Chargers in 2013. Jordan Hendricks, Colin Hendricks, and Roman Padilla all saw significant action last fall. Jordan Audiffred-Zauner had a great summer on the defensive side of the ball as well, and figures to get their first look at free safety for the Chargers. Hunter Fiorito and Patrick Canning also will see action in the secondary this fall. Thomas Gouger, Zack Kavcar, Sam Kielty, Jeff Marcoux, Brendan Ruehl, Alex Schuler, and Josh Wilson will all add depth to the defensive backfield mix. ACC will need to fill some holes on the defensive line with Tony Hizo being the lone returner on the defensive front. Mikey Malawski, Eduardo Gonzalez, and Danny Mowka all saw action last season for the Chargers, and once again figure to a factor up front. The improved depth will help keep the D-Line fresh with Diego Avila, Alex Cohen, Hugo Hinojosa, Don Ishmael, Jeff Kus, and Alex Martin all being looked at for contribution.

Defense

Football/Soccer standouts Ricky Anaya and Jared Friedrich will handle the kicking and punting duties this fall for the Chargers. Anaya, who is a three year veteran, knocked down a pair of 40 yard field goals and was 7-7 PATS in the summer scrimmage back in July. Jordan Audiffred-Zauner and Colin Baillie will handle the long snapping and holding duties respectively. A combination of Hunter Fiorito, Cody Ekstrom, Roman Padilla, and Julian Rios, will showcase their open field running skills handling kick and punt return duties.

Under the leadership of 33-year veteran coach John Belskis, the new-look Charger defense will shift from a 4-3 to an aggressive 3-4 front in 2013. The “Hit Hard” mentality has been embraced by the Charger defense and has become the rallying cry for the unit as a whole. Seven starters return to the lineup this fall for ACC, including a pair of three-year starters in linebackers Cody Ekstrom and Jacob Holzer. Ekstrom, a First Team All-Conference
