ABCA Annual Convention Comes To

Philly

The Philadelphia Marriott Downtown and the Pennsylvania Convention Center will host the 63rd ABCA Convention, Jan. 3-6 with more than 4,000 baseball coaches expected to attend. Committee and divisional meetings, as well as exhibits, officially open the convention on Thursday, Jan. 3.

career record stands at 905-573-3 for a .612 winning percentage, which is 46th on the active winning percentage list. His 905 wins are 15th on the active NCAA Division I list and his 409 conference wins top the Big Ten charts.

Clinic sessions begin on Friday, Jan. 4. Second Vice-President Pat McMahon of the University of Florida has arranged a great schedule of speakers including Pat Casey, Oregon State University; Ed Cheff, Lewis-Clark State College; Tim Corbin, Vanderbilt University; Mark Johnson, Sam Houston State, Jerry Kindall, University of Arizona (retired); and Pat Murphy, Arizona State University. In the exhibit hall, more than 300 companies are expected to display stateof-the-art equipment including new coaching aids, apparel, and batting and pitching machines, as well as numerous new products being displayed for the first time. Other convention highlights include The Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet on Friday, Jan. 4, at 6:30 p.m. and the Honors Luncheon on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 12:15 p.m.

Three Coaches Join Hall of Fame in 2008 The American Baseball Coaches Association welcomes three more coaches into its Hall of Fame as the Class of 2008. The inductees are John Anderson, University of Minnesota; Irish O’Reilly, Lewis University; and Warren Turner, Missouri Southern State University. These coaches officially join 228 other amateur baseball greats in the ABCA Hall of Fame during the Hall of Fame and Coach of the Year Banquet on Friday, Jan. 4. Biographies of the three inductees follow: Since the age of 26, John Anderson has been the Head Coach at the University of Minnesota. In the 26 seasons since, he’s become the all-time wins leader in both school and Big Ten history. His

John Anderson

Anderson has also led the Golden Gophers to eight Big Ten Tournament championships, the most in conference history; eight Big Ten regularseason titles, and 14 NCAA tournament appearances.

The Golden Gophers have had 15 AllAmericans, 235 Minnesota Scholar Athletes, and 124 Big Ten All-Academic Athletes. In addition, 76 players have gone to play baseball professionally. Anderson has also had 50 players named FirstTeam All-Big Ten since he has been with the program. He started Minnesota’s ProAlumni Game, which has been in existence for 16 years and started the Dairy Queen Classic at the Metrodome, which has featured some of the best teams in the nation over the past 23 years. Anderson has had a winning record in all 26 seasons at Minnesota extending the Golden Gophers’ streak to 45 straight winning seasons. He has produced seven 40-win seasons for Minnesota, including a school-record 46 wins in 1999. Anderson was a student manager in 1977 during the Golden Gophers last run to the College World Series. He was the team’s MVP on a squad that included future Hall of Famer Paul Molitor. Anderson was a Graduate Assistant in the program in 1978, an assistant coach from 1979-81, and took over as the head coach in the fall of 1981.

Beyond his service at the University, Anderson served as the Head Coach for Team USA in 1993 and led the team to a 30-16 record during its summer tour, including a silver medal in the Intercontinental Cup in Parna, Italy. At the time, it was the USA’s highest finish in that event since 1988. Team USA also went 8-1 in the World Championship that year. He was also an assistant coach for Team USA in 1989-90. With his induction into the Hall of Fame, Anderson becomes the third Golden Gophers coach to receive the honor, joining Dick Siebert and Frank McCormick. Minnesota is one of only seven Division I programs in the nation to have three or more coaches in the ABCA Hall of Fame. Anderson and his wife Jan, of 14 years, are the parents of a 12-year old daughter, Erin Elizabeth. Leaving as the dean of Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball coaches, Irish O’Reilly spent 38 years in coaching, including the past 29 seasons as Head Coach at Lewis University, before retiring this summer. He has remained at the school, however, as associate director of development for athletics. In 38 years as a head coach at the college, junior college, and high school levels, O’Reilly compiled a 1246916-8 record, which translates into a Irish O’Reilly .576 winning percentage. With a 29-year Lewis record of 982771-8 (.560), he ranks eighth in victories among all coaches in NCAA Division II history and was sixth in victories among active Division II coaches.

ABCA CONVENTION PREVIEW All but eight of O’Reilly’s teams have enjoyed winning seasons, and 23 of his teams reached NAIA or NCAA postseason play. His Lewis teams averaged 34 victories per season. The Flyers established themselves as one of the nation’s perennial Division II powers during the early years of O’Reilly’s tenure. Lewis has placed among the top five at the NCAA Division II Championship five times, including third place in 1988, 1990, and 1994, and has won six Great Lakes Valley Conference titles. O’Reilly coached Lewis to an NAIA national runner-up finish in 1980 when the Flyers won a school-record 61 games. He was named NAIA Area Coach of the Year. O’Reilly often has been recognized for his team’s success. He earned his sixth GLVC Coach of the Year honor in 1994 (he also won the award in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990, and 1992) and was named North Central Region Coach of the Year that season, the fifth time he has been voted top coach in the region. Before arriving at Lewis in 1978, O’Reilly served four years as head baseball coach and director of athletics at Kankakee Community College. He amassed a 130-66 record and guided the 1974 team to seventh place at the NJCAA Tournament. O’Reilly previously had compiled a 134-79 ledger in five seasons at his high school alma mater, Bishop McNamara (formerly St. Patrick Central). A 1967 Illinois State University graduate, O’Reilly was a four-year starting pitcher for the Redbirds. He co-captained the 1966 team, and his 10-3 mound record that year helped lead ISU to a 28-4 mark. O’Reilly finished his collegiate career ranked second on the school’s career strikeouts list with 286. Following graduation, O’Reilly signed with the Boston Red Sox and played three seasons in the minor leagues. He was inducted into the Illinois State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1983, the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1988, and the Bishop McNamara High School Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2000. O’Reilly conceived the idea for the ABCA’s free clinic held annually in conjunction with the Division II Championship in Montgomery, Ala. The “Clinic of Champions” serves 600 participants every year at the national tournament.

COACHING MANAGEMENT

An ABCA member for 38 years, O’Reilly served as the organization’s president in 2005 and is chairman of the Division II All-America committee. He served nine years on the NCAA Division II National Baseball Championship Committee. O’Reilly served 12 years as an elected village trustee in Manteno, Ill., overseeing the parks and recreation commission and golf commission. He is president of “Save Our Golf Course, Inc.,” a nonprofit corporation formed to manage and run the Village of Manteno golf course. He also serves as a consultant to the Manteno Education Foundation he helped form in 1998, and he served four years on the Bishop McNamara High School Board. O’Reilly and his wife, Patricia, have been married for 37 years and have three daughters—Tricia Dotson, Jennifer, and Karissa Fletcher. For more than 40 years, the name Warren Turner has been linked with baseball in Southwest Missouri. In 1976, after 11 years of coaching baseball, football, and basketball in high school, Turner was named head baseball coach at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Mo. After two years at the Warren Turner helm, he took his team to the NAIA World Series. The Lions finished second, and Turner was named National Coach of the Year.

Before retiring after the 2007 season, he led his teams to four more trips to the World Series, twice in the NAIA World Series and twice to the NCAA Division II World Series. In 1990, Missouri Southern joined the NCAA ranks, and during the 2005 season, Turner’s team handed him his 800th victory. He led the team to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association South Division championships in 1990, 1991, and 1992, and MIAA titles in 1991, and 1992. His teams have advanced to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament four times, finishing first in 1990 and 1991, third in 1990, and fourth in 2001. The 1991 team finished second at NCAA Division II World Series. For his efforts, Turner has been named conference Coach of the Year three times (CSIC in 1986 and MIAA in 1991 and 1992). He was NCAA Division II Regional Coach of the Year in 1991 and 1992; NAIA District 16 Coach of the Year in 1978, 1985, 1986, and 1987; NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1978, 1986, and 1987; and NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1978. He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in January 2004. He has been a member of ABCA, NAIA, and NCAA committees and served as chairman of the rankings committee for his area. He has been inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame, the Missouri Southern State University Hall of Fame, and the Joplin Sports Hall of Fame. During his tenure at Southern, Turner also earned the rank of Professor, received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and was named a March of Dimes Man of the Year. COACHING MANAGEMENT

Wally Kincaid Named Gomez Award Winner The Lefty Gomez Award is one of the most prestigious awards in all of amateur baseball. Named after the great Lefty Gomez, this award is presented by the American Baseball Coaches Association each year to an individual who has distinguished himself amongst his peers and has contributed sigWally Kincaid nificantly to the game of baseball locally, nationally, and internationally. This year’s recipient is Wally Kincaid, former Head Coach at Cerritos College. Kincaid’s story began in the late 1950’s when the Cerritos College campus was being built and athletics was a way to bring students to the school. One of the sports was baseball. But who would be the best hire for the position? The choice was Kincaid, a local product who attended Downey High and Whittier College. Kincaid took over the brand new Falcon program in 1958 and by the time he was done after 22 years (1958-77, 1979-80) of leading the program, he led the school to six California State Championships, 15 conference championships, six Southern California Championships and one Northern California Championship. He posted a career 678163 record for an .803 winning percentage and led his teams to an incredible 60-game winning streak that spanned three seasons (1965-67). In Kincaid’s first season, he led an allfreshman team to a 14-14 record. By the next season, he guided them to the Western State Conference championship, and by 1966, they became the first and only community college team to go undefeated, as they went 40-0 and won the state championship. It was the first of a record six state titles, more than any other school to this day. However, it was more than wins and losses that helped define the legend of Wally Kincaid. During his tenure, Kincaid sent over 150 of his student-athletes into professional baseball, while even more than

that went on to be coaches at all different levels. Several of his more notable players who went on to coach include George Horton (who recently was named the head coach at the University of Oregon, and won a College World Series at Cal State Fullerton); Mike Weathers (Cal State Long Beach); Dave Snow (former head coach at Cal State Long Beach); Don Sneddon (the all-time leader in community college wins at Santa Ana College); Ken Gaylord (Cerritos College); Dave Serrano (UC Irvine); and Bob Apodaca, who is currently the pitching coach for the Colorado Rockies. Even after he retired from coaching with Cerritos College, Kincaid made himself available to serve as a mentor to his former players, and served as a full-time assistant coach on three College World Series teams at Cal State Long Beach. He also spent time working with Cal State Fullerton and Santa Ana College. Cerritos College went on to bestow Kincaid its highest honor when they named their baseball stadium Kincaid Field in 1990. Other honors followed, and in the spring of 2000, Collegiate Baseball named Kincaid the National Community College Baseball Coach of the Century. Even today, Kincaid is considered by many to be the dean of Southern California baseball and patriarch to a long line of successful coaches and players who turned pro. He is widely considered the best coach in the history of community college baseball and the way he taught the game is still being played today. He has been married 57 years to Mona and has five adult children.

Honors Luncheon Each year, the Honors Luncheon is one of the convention highlights since it allows the ABCA to pay special tribute to some very special people. This year, the ABCA will again have some deserving individuals receiving awards. Dale Petroskey will be receiving the Honor Award. Petroskey is the President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. He became the Hall’s fifth president in 1999 and oversees the shrine dedicated to preserving baseball history and telling the story of its role in American culture. Any ABCA member may nominate an individual for the Honor Award. The Nominating/Awards Committee then reviews the nominations and selects an

Baseball Hot and Cold Weather Pitchers Compression Shirts Stromgren Supports® Pitchers Shirts are a moisture-wicking, compression shirt but with sleeves made from fabric with a much higher level of compression. The technology of these shirts provides the pitcher with a comfortable but a high level of compression to his pitching arm. This scientifically proven concept can help reduce muscle vibration, which can help reduce arm fatigue. This natural process has the potential of allowing a pitcher to throw more accurate pitches during a game. In addition, post game recovery time to the arm and elbow complex may be shortened. Simplify & Speed your Product Research on the Internet Use links and tools on AthleticBid.com AthleticBid.com is a free service designed to help you research products and contact companies in an easy-to-use format. Looking for a specific product? You can use the Buyer’s Guide to search “By Product” and locate prospective suppliers. Each of the suppliers has a listing that can be reviewed. Some listings include basic contact data, but others have additional information to help you learn about the products or services and their company. Another option available on AthleticBid.com is to place an RFP. When you already know your specs and are looking for price quotes from a variety of vendors, this is a great tool. Input your information and within three days you will receive e-mailed responses from all interested suppliers.

Finally, if you’re just interested in reviewing some of the new products that have been introduced on the market—check out the “Product Connection” section with brief descriptions and photos of products and contact information for the companies that sell them. Learning More About Suppliers and their Products As mentioned earlier, a number of the company’s have enhanced listings that include additional resources to help you better evaluate them and their products. Once you locate an individual company’s listing, you are able to: ●

View complete product lines, seeing all of the products offered by the company View catalog pages or spec sheets with detailed product

information. The information is stored as PDF files so you can view them on-line or print them out for easy reference Read a profile or description of the company or a company representative. Request to be contacted by the company using an e-mail link direct to the company. Ask for a catalog and sales literature from the company—again using an e-mail link direct to the company.

Take advantage of the wealth of information and resources available on AthleticBid.com to increase the information you gather, while also saving valuable time.

It used to take hours to contact dozens of companies to research products and plan purchases. But by using AthleticBid.com, it now only takes minutes.

TESTIMONIAL

Coaches Are Sold on Pitching Machine’s Features “The Hack Attack’s threewheel design eliminates the delays caused by pivoting the throwing head when changing pitches. You can instantly dial in great curve balls above 70 mph, sharp sliders above 80 mph, and fastballs above 90 mph.” John Savage Head Baseball Coach UCLA “My coaches used to resist using pitching machines, and relied instead on live throwing arms. However, the Hack Attack is a great training tool for our hitters and catchers. It is as good as live pitching with its vision and timing. It throws accurate breaking pitches, it’s indestructible, and it’s easy to operate and move. We use the Hack Attack in our practices and camps all year long.” Paul Mainieri Head Baseball Coach Louisiana State University “I have been coaching professional baseball, including at the Major League level, for more than 30 years and I have used this machine ever y day for both offensive and defensive work. It is by far the best machine on the market.” Joe Maddon Manager Tampa Bay Devil Rays

Team emblems, logos, and sponsor messages can now be displayed in their true colors. Team-Up multi-color windscreen imprinting uses the latest technology to allow direct imprinting onto windscreen mesh fabric in vibrant colors. Finally, baseball and softball fields can have concise, vivid images on their outfield and baseline windscreens. The imprinted colors display good scuff and weather resistance. Team-Up imprinting is available only with Aer-FloŽ’s new Tuffy and Puffy windscreens that carry an exclusive four-year warranty on non-imprinted sections.

The Measuring Plate is perfect for all levels of play in baseball and softball. It’s simple to use and has a lightweight double-wall design. It is ideal for pitching practice and warmup anytime and anywhere. Pitcher/ catcher camps and clinics for all ages can benefit from the Measuring Plate, and it can add a new dimension to indoor training and off-season practice away from the field. Advanced uses include flat practice (baseball pitching), pitching rehab (all levels), and private instruction and training centers. It features rugged UV- and weather-resistant HDPE plastic construction with adjustable 60’ 6 fiberglass tape.

PlayBall!Ž Advanced Formula infield conditioner’s 10-percent-by-volume application rate is the lowest in the industry. PlayBall! holds twice the water of calcined clay—up to 130 percent of its weight. This means fewer rainouts and delays. PlayBall! also holds moisture longer to control dust. Water the field before the game and play dustfree all day. PlayBall! is permanent and will not break down, float in the soil, or require replacement.

The shirt body is constructed of Active Carbon Fiber fabric and is designed to maintain core temperature while controlling body moisture. The Pitching Pad is a complete training system designed to make pitchers’ workouts more effective. Using the markings on the Pitching Pad as reference points, pitchers are forced to focus on location, and by seeing exactly where each pitch lands, they’re better able to make needed adjustments. The numbers are laid out like a clock, allowing the pitcher to perfect a 12-6 curveball or a 10-4 sinker. Suggested daily workouts, a pitching chart, and simulated game instructions are included.

The LimbSaver baseball bat technology is revolutionary in the way it controls painful energies while pushing the envelope of performance for a baseball bat. Until now, most players dreaded the lengthy break-in process needed to soften a glove.

Hot Glove heat treatment uses a patented foam that is rapidly absorbed deep into the fibers of the glove when exposed to heat. You then shape the glove to your exact needs and it’s game-ready in less than 10 minutes. American Baseball Coaches Association Membership In 1945, a group of college baseball coaches gathered in New York City to formulate ideas for the promotion and improvement of collegiate baseball. That group founded what is known today as the American Baseball Coaches Association. Over the past 60 years, the association has grown to include membership in every division of amateur baseball and is recognized as the world’s largest baseball association. The main objective of the ABCA is educational in nature, helping to improve the level of coaching. The ABCA helps to promote rapport among the coaches and the divisions within baseball and recognizes deserving players and coaches through several sponsorship/award programs. Membership for the ABCA is only $30 per year for US residents (plus $3 handling fee), $35 for Canadian members (plus $3 handling fee), and $40 for international members (plus $3 handling fee). All memberships must be paid in US funds. The ABCA does not accept purchase orders.

CASE STUDY

MLB-Caliber Footwear and Equipment Available to High School and College Programs As the Category Director for Reebok’s cleated footwear division, Joshua Rattet is an integral part of the successful relationships Reebok maintains with the NFL and MLB. He is also responsible for building and developing all of Reebok’s cleated footwear. Joshua has a strong background in product marketing and sports marketing, and has degrees from the University of MassachusettsAmherst and Northeastern University.

What are the unique features of your baseball team footwear line for college and high school teams in terms of construction and comfort, and what makes the footwear so innovative? We have made a dramatic overhaul of our product line for 2008 in an effort to reduce weight, increase breathability, and improve comfort and cushioning. For example, in the Wheels MP we have incorporated a brand new technology called Kinetic Fit. The Kinetic Fit system includes a panel of material constructed into the upper that allows the shoe to move naturally in conjunction with the mechanics of the foot. This ultimately minimizes irritation. Through Reebok’s stateof-the-art engineering capabilities, we have also developed an innovative, lightweight two-piece plate called HardLink. HardLink is a TPU arch bridge that connects the two separate pieces of the outsole plate to give it the support of a one-piece plate. This makes the footwear significantly lighter while maintaining the structural integrity of the shoe. In addition, we have included PlayDry collar liners to wick moisture out of the upper and keep the foot cool and comfortable. Reebok is MLB’s Authentic Collection Supplier of Footwear. How has this official partnership influenced your company’s footwear development? We could not have asked for a better partner than Major League Baseball. They have given us the opportunity to utilize their logos, which resonate with consumers around the world. Being the official shoe of Major League Baseball has validated our performance credibility and authenticated what we are trying to articulate to our consumers—that we make great baseball shoes.

COACHING MANAGEMENT

We are introducing a signature David Ortiz shoe this coming season. He wore the shoe throughout the playoffs and the World Series. It is through working with players like David Ortiz that Reebok is able to collect feedback and integrate the needs of professional athletes into

the footwear we develop. By incorporating the iconic silhouetted batter onto our shoes and using Reebok baseball icons in a uniform fashion, retailers, consumers, and industry experts have seen the correlation between Reebok and MLB. Who in MLB is currently wearing Reebok footwear, and how do you meet their individual needs? We arguably have the game’s best young athletes and a solid mix of veterans. Reebok has more than 200 Major League players under contract, 17 of whom were selected to play in the 2007 All-Star Game in San Francisco. Prince Fielder, wearing Reebok, hit 50 home runs as a rookie. Clay Buckholtz of the Boston Red Sox and Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers both pitched no-hitters this season wearing Reebok. Josh Beckett, possibly this generation’s greatest postseason pitcher, has dominated wearing Reebok footwear. Beckett is also wearing a Reebok glove—a credit to the quality of our new baseball equipment line. Magglio Ordonez, Jonathan Papelbon, Justin Morneau, J. J. Hardy, Hunter Pence, Brandon Webb, Curt Schilling, Jason Giambi, Alfonso Soriano, and many others all wear Reebok baseball footwear. How are you able to offer colleges and high school programs the same products that are being worn by MLB athletes? We use the same specifications for our retail shoes that we use for the products made for our stable of MLB athletes. That is our point of difference and badge of credibility. Are there other special features and innovations of your team footwear line that can benefit high school and college baseball programs? Ultimately, we want to provide the athlete with a perfect fit. Weight reduction, increased breathability, moisture management, increased comfort, and better traction are all primary focuses in this crusade to provide players with a competitive advantage. Selecting treatments and components that make a difference is just the start. We work relentlessly on every aspect of the cleat—from picking industry-leading materials to designing meaningful benefits for athletes of all ages.
