Tuffy® BALLASTED WINDSCREEN Protects Chain Link Fences from Wind Damage PATENTED technology using engineered 5’ x 6’ windscreen units with weighted PVC pipe inserted in bottom pocket, attached to fence only at top. High winds open the unit to let damaging velocities thru. Installing alternately on both sides of fence allows half of it to open up no matter the wind’s direction. Can be intermixed with regular Tuffy Windscreen to reduce wind pressure on any chain link fence. Built-in hook & loop strips at top allow one person to roll up and secure unit in less than 30 seconds, saving costly labor in last minute pre-storm preparations (and improves tourney viewing). With units rolled up, net wind force may approach 93% less than that on same fence with fully attached windscreen. HUNDREDS HAVE BEEN IN USE BY SCHOOLS, GOVERNMENT, AND PRIVATE CLUBS FOR UP TO FIVE YEARS. Fully tested and ready to protect your fences.

ABCA Ethics Award
Bailey, Saunders Share Prestigious Honor The ABCA believes that the highest calling of a baseball coach is to teach life’s lessons and model character traits of honesty, integrity, respect, and personal responsibility, and that a coach’s moral and ethical conducts—on and off the field—deeply influences players. The ABCA Ethics in Coaching Award honors coaches who display these traits. This year’s recipients are Pat Bailey, Assistant Coach at Oregon State University, and Tim Saunders, Head Coach at Dublin (Ohio) Coffman High School.
pat bailey
Pat Bailey is entering his sixth season at Oregon State University, where he’s worked most closely with the hitters and outfielders. He has helped guide Oregon State to postseason play in each of the last four seasons.
Before accepting the position at OSU, Bailey spent 12 years as the Head Coach at George Fox University, where he
established the program as one of the best in the Northwest Conference and at the NCAA Division III national level. He led GFU to the 2004 NCAA Division III title, the school’s first in any sport. The Bruins won or shared eight NWC titles during his tenure and never had a losing season. Bailey earned two letters in baseball at North Idaho College then two more as a starting outfielder at the University of Idaho, where he was captain his senior season. He has also worked at the Pro Holiday Camps and at the Pro Seattle Camp Experience in Washington. Tim Saunders just completed his 24th season as the Head Coach at Dublin Coffman High School where he has led the team to one state title, two regional titles, five district championships Tim Saunders and 12 league crowns. His overall record, which includes four years as Head Coach at Meigs (Ohio) High School, stands at 471-296. His teams have appeared in the state regionals (final 16) five times. In 2000, his team made it to the state semifinals, and Saunders was named the ABCA District 4 Coach of the Year as

In 2007 it was voted the BCA National Field of the Year. Saunders attended the University of Rio Grande from 1978 to 1981 and played outfield for the Redmen for two years. His senior year, he did his student teaching at Portsmouth (Ohio) High School and became the assistant coach for the team that finished as state runner-up. His work with USA Baseball also included stints as a coach at the Olympic Sports
Festival in 1995 and 1997 and with the USA Youth National teams that won gold medals in 1998, 1999, and 2000. GATORADE SPORTS SCIENCE INSTITUTE SPORTS NUTRITION IN HIGH SCHOOL
CAFETERIAS No matter what sport you coach or how talented your athletes are, they need to be consuming high-octane fuels for peak performance. Too many high school athletes skip breakfast, make lousy food choices at lunch and then wonder why they are struggling to focus and perform on the field or court. One of the easiest and most convenient ways to feed high school athletes is through their school cafeteria. Having athletes stop by the cafeteria and grab a whole-grain bagel, low fat yogurt and a piece of fruit for breakfast starts their engine humming. Having them eat lunch on the school campus as opposed to skipping lunch or making lousy food choices will help them store energy in their muscles for afternoon workouts or games. If you haven’t noticed, school cafeterias have made some changes. Through the Healthy-Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010, school cafeterias are serving more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low fat and fat free milk in chef-inspired recipes --exactly what athletes should be consuming in order to fuel their athletic performance. Fruits and vegetables provide the vitamins and minerals athletes need to maintain a healthy immune system, while whole grains like breads and pasta and rice can provide the energy they need to perform, especially when it comes to the second half of the game. Drinking low fat milk provides calcium to help their bones grow and helps with muscle contraction for speed and endurance. When these foods are served with a good source of protein, athletes have the fuels and nutrients they need to perform at their best. Teaming up with school food service can be a great solution in fueling high school athletes. Many school food service staff and managers take pride in their school and enjoy working with their school athletic teams. Coaches should take the opportunity to work with their school cafeterias to provide foods and meals that help athletes perform as well as encouraging them to make good food choices from their school cafeteria. School food service managers can provide “training tables” for their high school athletes and can also
plan and provide pre-game meals for teams, along with snacks for away games at prices much lower than you can purchase at a local store. Additionally, if your teams practice in the morning before school, work with the school cafeteria manager to have a sack breakfast that players can purchase. This means your athletes won’t show up to class with an empty tank. You’ve helped coach your athlete to be the best they can be. Now, make sure that proper nutrition becomes part of their game.
ABCA CONVENTION PREVIEW
Message from the President Our annual American Baseball Coaches Association convention is a wonderful way to set the tone for your upcoming season. The ABCA will be returning to Chicago, Ill., for the 68th Annual Baseball Convention held at the Hyatt Regency Chicago on Wacker Drive from January 3-6, 2013. Many factors go into making this the largest and greatest coaches’ convention in the world, but none play a more significant role than the outstanding clinics that will occur from January 4th to the 6th. Second Vice-President Scott Berry has organized another brilliant lineup of speakers. Third Vice-President, Ed Blankmeyer, has a great group of high
school speakers as well. The clinics are always educational, informative, and motivational … you don’t want to miss them!!! In addition to the clinic sessions, approximately 300 vendors will be sharing their ideas and displaying everything you can think of dealing with the game of baseball!
attend the 2013 Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet and the Honors Luncheon. These are both marvelous events that recognize people who have made significant contributions to our game. I invite you to join us at these special events in celebrating their achievements!
The convention will begin on Thursday, January 3rd with business meetings of each division (NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, High School, International, and Youth) gathering to discuss and decide upon relevant issues and rule changes within their respective group. I invite you to volunteer or “get involved” in your division of the ABCA. There are many different ways you can help. Share your talents and expertise! We have many incredible men who have shared their gifts and visions to better our organization and the game of baseball.
To all coaches of the ABCA— youth, high school, college, and international—continue to challenge yourselves and be great leaders for the players you coach. This game of baseball, along with your direction, will prepare your players to be successful in the bigger game of life and how to deal with those tough times.
I would also like to extend an invitation to all coaches and guests to

It was during those years that his love of athletics was developed under merl some very caring coacheberly es whose influence was evident in the man he became. He was a four-sport athlete in high school, played basketball in junior college, and minor league baseball for the Chicago White Sox. His association with the Clarinda A’s baseball program began as a player in 1954. He served as manager from 1961 to 1997 and was General Manager until his death in 2011. During his tenure as manager the team posted a 1501-591 record for a wining percentage of .717. The team won the National Baseball Congress World Series in 1981 and finished third in 1976. Over 300 of his players played professional baseball, with 30 making it to the major league level, including Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith. Eberly worked for the Clarinda Herald Journal for nearly 30 years, starting in the back shop, then writing sports, and eventually becoming an advertising salesman and stockholder. Jim Quinlan has been National Program Coordinator of American Legion Baseball since 1986. A native of West Branch, Iowa, his involvement with the American Legion baseball program began in 1970 when he played for the local American Legion team in his county. Following his honorable discharge from the U.S.
Marine Corps in 1975, he began to help the local American Legion team. In 1986, he was tapped for the position of National Program Coordinator jim for American Legion quinlan Baseball and moved to Indianapolis where he resides today. Under Quinlan’s stewardship, American Legion baseball has grown from 2,500 teams to nearly 5,000 today. During his tenure the program went online allowing Legion teams to register, schedule games, and promote their tournaments via the internet. Quinlan was instrumental in creating a baseball scholarship trust that annually awards nearly $50,000. These scholarships are based on academics, community service and financial needs. Also during his tenure, Shelby, N.C., was named as the new permanent home of the American Legion World Series. Tampa Bay Rays Manager Joe Maddon uses the Junior Hack Attack Pitching Machine to implement vision training with major league hitters. At a 33-foot distance, he adjusts the Junior Hack Attack to use a small ball that comes up at an angle and reaches hitters at a high speed. Maddon’s theory is that the hitter has to focus on the smaller ball, and shorten the stroke to get the head of the bat to the ball. The objective is hard focus and quick connection to the ball. Maddon has been using this drill for many seasons, believing that hitters rapidly adjust their swing to make contact. His insight has led to this novel way of teaching high-profile hitters. “Their entire ‘hack’ improves without me saying a word,” Maddon says. “It takes about three rounds and then instead of the initial frustration, it’s a line drive.”

All In the Hips
Hitting for power? Try the Power Bag. It was designed to teach hitters to use their lower half when hitting the ball—not just to rotate the hips, but to use them as a power source when driving through the ball. The Power Bag allows hitters to power through contact and finish the swing. Use good point-of-contact mechanics and the bag will swing higher for a visual reward. Use lazy hips, rolled wrists, or swing around the ball and the bag will not move nearly as much.
