Tuffy® BALLASTED WINDSCREEN Protects Chain Link Fences from Wind Damage PATENTED technology using engineered 5’ x 6’ windscreen units with weighted PVC pipe inserted in bottom pocket, attached to fence only at top. High winds open the unit to let damaging velocities thru. Installing alternately on both sides of fence allows half of it to open up no matter the wind’s direction. Can be intermixed with regular Tuffy Windscreen to reduce wind pressure on any chain link fence. Built-in hook & loop strips at top allow one person to roll up and secure unit in less than 30 seconds, saving costly labor in last minute pre-storm preparations (and improves tourney viewing). With units rolled up, net wind force may approach 93% less than that on same fence with fully attached windscreen. HUNDREDS HAVE BEEN IN USE BY SCHOOLS, GOVERNMENT, AND PRIVATE CLUBS FOR UP TO FIVE YEARS. Fully tested and ready to protect your fences.

Coaching Management ABCA CONVENTION 2014 11

ABCA CONVENTION PREVIEW

Message from the President The ABCA will be returning to Dallas, Texas, for the 69th Annual Baseball Convention, which will be at the Hilton Anatole in the city’s Market Center District, from January 2-5, 2014. Please join us once again for the greatest learning environment baseball has to offer. Second Vice President Eddie Blankmeyer has put together another tremendous group of speakers and clinicians. Third Vice President John Casey has a great group of high school clinicians as well. In addition to the clinic sessions, approximately 300 vendors will be sharing their ideas and products with our coaches. The convention will begin on Thursday January 2nd with business meetings of each division (NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, High School, International, and Youth) gathering to discuss and decide relevant issues and rule changes within their respective group. Please make yourself available for these meetings, as they are informational and productive to our association.

I would also like to extend an invitation to all coaches and guests to attend the 2014 Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet and the Honors Luncheon. These are both marvelous events that recognize people who have made significant contributions to our game. I invite you to join us at these special events in celebrating their achievements! As my term as President comes to a close, I urge you all to continue your participation in all facets of the ABCA—youth, high school, college, and international. Continue to challenge yourself in learning environments like these to enrich the game and better the players you coach. I would also like to take this time and acknowledge one of college baseball’s greatest leaders as he steps down after this clinic. ABCA Executive Director Dave Keilitz has helped shaped this association for over 19 years. His admiration and care for the gentlemen who have served before him and his nurturing style for the young coaches

behind him will leave an indelible mark on all those he has come in contact with. When it comes to leadership in the world tim corbin of athletics, Dave’s unique and natural way of blending personal qualities into a leadership style separate him from others. His professionalism at the highest level, forthright honesty, and humility allow him to be followed, respected, admired, and celebrated simultaneously. He leaves a legacy of superior direction and influence among every level of baseball that will be hard to replicate. It has been an honor and privilege to serve as President during his final year. All of us at the ABCA look forward to seeing you in Dallas! Tim Corbin ABCA President Head Coach, Vanderbilt University

ple throughout his career. His hallmark has been sharing his value system that runs steep in integrity and honesty. For this, O’Brian has been selected as this year’s recipient as the ABCA Ethics in Coaching Award. He has coached at all levels of baseball from; Babe Ruth, American Legion, high school, college and the Cape Cod League. O’Brian stared his coaching career at Randolph (Mass.) High School. While at Randolph he also coached the town’s Babe Ruth team to a state championship. From there he went on to coach baseball and basketball at MIT, leading the baseball team to the NCAA tournament. In 1990, he was named Manager of the Year in the Cape Cod Baseball League. From 1998 to 2004 O’Brian coached baseball at the College of the Holy Cross. Coach O’Brian’s message to his former players, coaches and family is

constant and clear: ”Make sure you always make time to give back to the sport and the kids who gave you so much.” The inaugural winner of the Ethics in Coaching Award was Mark Johnson, Sam Houston State. Since that time, this prestigious honor has been presented to Jerry Novosel, West Middlesex (Pa.) High School; Gordie Gillespie, University

of St. Francis; Steve Farley, Butler University; Sam Riggleman, Spring Arbor University; Stan Luketich, Desert Vista (Ariz.) High School; Pat Bailey, Oregon State University; and Tim Saunders, Dublin Coffman (Ohio) High School. Coach O’Brian will be presented the award by Tom O’Connell, Chair of the Ethics in Coaching Award Committee, at the Dallas Convention in front of over 4,000 of his coaching peers.

How It Works The new Three Piece Tee® balance trainer promotes the proper foundation for younger players through muscle memory and hip rotation — consistently improving performance results on the field at any age and skill level. At the core of every successful baseball or softball player is a foundation of strong mechanics and what makes for strong mechanics is proper balance. A properly balanced position is the first, and most important, building block for any player that wants to achieve their true potential and make it to the next level of competition.

Balance is Power® A common misconception among athletes is the source of speed and power. Bat speed and power begin with a player’s balanced core and feet, not their arms and shoulders. Superior balance creates stability and allows a player to powerfully pivot the load foot towards the ball, squaring the hips to the target and increasing the player’s bat speed. The result = using stronger core muscles and the entire body — not just arms and shoulders — to generate maximum bat speed and hitting power.

WINNING THE DRAG RACE

The Original Infield Erasers Mat Drags are one of the most sought after fieldgrooming devices made in decades. The Erasers will even work in adverse, damp soil conditions as opposed to the standard metal drags which can “load up” and actually make your playing surface unlevel or unsafe. As you pull the mat drags, they will percolate and dry your material while leveling and finishing your field to a professional finish. The Erasers are so unique in design that they will not harm your grass, mounds, or home plate if they inadvertently come into contact with them. They’re so remarkable, you can also use them to level and finish warning tracks, as well as to level and groom synthetic turf surfaces. M.A.S.A. • 800-264-4519 www.sportsadvantage.com

ALL IN THE HIPS

Are you hitting for power? Try the Power Bag. It was designed to teach hitters to use their lower half when hitting the ball—not just to rotate the hips, but to use them as a power source when driving through the ball. The Power Bag allows hitters to power through contact and finish the swing. Use good point-of-contact mechanics and the bag will swing higher for a visual reward. If you use lazy hips, rolled wrists, or swing around the ball, the bag will not move nearly as much.

American Baseball Coaches Association Membership In 1945, a group of college baseball coaches gathered in New York City to formulate ideas for the promotion and improvement of collegiate baseball. That group founded what is known today as the American Baseball Coaches Association. Over the past 68 years, the association has grown to include membership in every division of amateur baseball and is recognized as the world’s largest baseball association. The main objective of the ABCA is educational in nature, helping to improve the level of coaching. The ABCA helps to promote rapport among the coaches and the divisions within baseball and recognizes deserving players and coaches through several sponsorship/award programs. Membership for the ABCA is only $30 per year for US residents (plus $3 handling fee), $35 for Canadian members (plus $3 handling fee), and $40 for international members (plus $3 handling fee). All memberships must be paid in US funds. The ABCA does not accept purchase orders.

Game Changer with KT3 technology delivers a premium three-stage surfactant blend to your infield mix, promoting fast infiltration of applied water or rainfall. This product eliminates the need to make additional applications with sprays or injectable products; instead, it is included in the normal application of your conditioner. Independent third-party research proved that the addition of the surfactant blend improved the infiltration of applied water to the infield dirt and its ability to take moisture much more quickly.

LIVE PITCHING IN A BOX

The HomePlate pitching machine is unlike most pitching machines. The ability to program different pitches allows the HomePlate to simulate any pitcher you are likely to see. With the HomePlate you can program a 90 MPH fastball, followed by a 75 MPH curve, followed by a change-up or slider. And it is done automatically, with only seven seconds between pitches. HomePlate can throw pitches you have programmed in sequential or random order, or you can practice repeatedly against any single pitch. Programming HomePlate requires only a couple of simple steps, and you can store up to eight different pitches in each of eight different programs. HomePlate features a patented three-wheel pitching mechanism for greater accuracy. You also get an auto-feed system with an 80-ball capacity. It’s like having a batting practice pitcher that never gets tired.

Coach Fred Heatherington in Steubenville, Ohio wasn’t sure what to expect from the computerized e-Hack Attack Baseball Pitching Machine or how long it would take to get the hang of using it. “When the switch goes on, you just follow step by step,” he says. “The e-Hack Attack is ready to go out of the box.” Coach Heatherington has the machine in use three hours a day, five days a week from October through May. One of the many features he finds most useful is that the e-Hack Attack automatically changes to the next pitch in a given sequence he creates. “When you put a sequence in, the hitter doesn’t know what is coming next,” he explains. “This is especially helpful during bad weather or around tournament time. We can have the e-Hack do a sequence of fastballs, leftor right-hand curves, and any other pitch in one of our cages while our Hack Attack is in the other cage doing only right-hand curves. “It’s also very game-like,” Heatherington continues. “If the first pitch is a fastball, I tell the batter to step out of the box. When he steps back in, the next pitch is ready. The e-Hack Attack is unbelievable. It’s a great tool.”

“Our softball league operates in a neighborhood park and our relationship with the neighbors that border the park has been strained over the years...Our plan to remediate Field 3 needed their approval and had been shot down for many years due to environmental issues and inconvenience to the neighbors adjacent to our complex. Stabilizer Solutions and its products were the solution to our challenge. Stabilizers’ polymer infield mix Hilltopper is nearly dust free. Dust is our biggest challenge in operating the league within the community where homeowners literally border the fields on all sides. We are big fans of Stabilizer Solutions and its products.” -Andy Hermann, President of the Los Alamitos Girls Softball League Board of Directors
