2010 Year in Review
Dear Friends of the Cornell Athletics, I invite you to peruse the 2010 Cornell Athletics Year In Review. It summarizes the many highlights that were achieved by our dedicated athletes and their terrific coaches beginning with the historic winter season through this past fall. Two thousand ten was truly a year to remember in Big Red sports.
Our men’s heavyweight rowers placed third at the IRA national championship, finishing ahead of all EARC and Ivy League crews. Our men’s and women’s outdoor track teams continued to excel, winning the outdoor Heptagonal championships, and while softball captured its second-consecutive Ivy crown.
It all began with one of the most impressive athletics achievements in Cornell history—our men’s basketball team’s third consecutive Ivy League championship followed by upset victories over Temple and Wisconsin in the NCAA tournament. The level of national attention Cornell University and Big Red Athletics received surprised us, as the Big Red basketball team became the darling of the NCAA basketball tournament field. The same weekend, NCAA second-place finishes in wrestling and women’s ice hockey caused alumni pride to swell even more, topped off by men’s ice hockey’s 12th ECAC tournament championship. In addition, our men’s and women’s squash programs achieved on the national level, placing sixth and seventh at their championships, respectively, and our women’s fencers placed 14th at the NCAAs without the advantage of team points scored by a men’s program. Women’s gymnastics continued its impressive performance at the USAG nationals, placing third with an individual champion having won the title the prior year.
The accomplishments of our athletes and coaching staffs during 2010 will certainly rank among the most successful in Cornell Athletics history. Our student body rallied behind our teams and enjoyed every moment of the Big Red run to the Sweet Sixteen and the other historic accomplishments earned by our teams throughout the year. Heartfelt thanks to our loyal and generous alumni, parents and friends for the support that enabled our athletes to achieve such an elite level of performance. Please know that our athletes recognize they are representing you in the competitive arena and that their performance becomes part of the Cornell tradition—not simply a team or individual honor.
In the spring, our athletes continued to achieve on the national stage. Men’s lacrosse earned a berth in the NCAA Final Four for the third time in four years.
Sincerely,
J. Andrew Noel Jr. The Meakem*Smith Director of Athletics & Physical Education

on the national stage The story line in 2010 that most captivated fans across the nation was the ascendency of Big Red basketball from repeat Ivy champion to top twenty program that threatened top ten teams including #1 ranked Kansas. Led by head coach Steve Donahue and a talented senior class, bolstered by the contribution of underclassmen like Chris Wrobleski and Adam Wire, Cornell earned a berth in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen with terrific upset victories over Temple and Wisconsin. Ryan Wittman, Louis Dale and Jeff Foote all became household names above Cayuga’s waters and far beyond.

on the national stage After a stunning 4th place NCAA finish in 2007, those closest to the Cornell program and coaching staff accepted that this performance was an accomplishment that realistically could not be surpassed and would not likely be matched. But, head coach, Rob Koll thought differently — and planned differently. The result, an incredible NCAA 2nd place in 2010, an individual national championship each year since 2007, and a consistent wave of All-Americans. With the 2011 NCAA tournament 14 weeks away, the Big Red is ranked #1 and Rob Koll is not the least bit surprised.

on the national stage The most pondered question on the national scene in women’s ice hockey asks how Cornell, pre-season ranked #7 in the ECAC, could win the Ivy League, ECAC regular season and tournament championships and place #2 at the NCAA Frozen Four — missing the national championship by the narrowest of margins. Surprisingly, the answer is simple. A great coach relentlessly recruited national and even world class players to a world-renown university and prepared them for success in the many areas that excellence requires. It may come as no surprise that the Big Red is currently ranked #1 with an 11-1 record.

on the national stage Year in and year out, the Cornell men’s hockey program battles its way into contention for postseason accolades. In 2010, the combined efforts of a dedicated coaching staff and determined Big Red players gelled later in the season. The result was the 12th ECAC tournament championship, first team All-America, ECAC and Ivy honors for many and three convincing victories over arch rival Harvard. Each skater competed fiercely to represent the proud tradition of Cornell hockey with an added measure of inspiration provided by one of the finest coaching staff in college hockey.

on the national stage When Ben DeLuca ‘98 accepted the responsibility of leading the Big Red this past summer, he did so with a fervent desire and a strong will to maintain and grow the proud tradition of Cornell Lacrosse. In 2011, like most years, this mission will require the best of even the most able leader considering that Cornell has amassed eight consecutive Ivy League titles and earned three trips to the NCAA Final Four in the past four seasons. To say that Ben was recognized as the popular choice to grow the tradition established by Richie Moran, David Pietramala and Jeff Tambroni would be an understatement. Much anticipation awaits the formal launch of the Ben DeLuca era.

national stage Big Red softball is known for the terrific leadership and mentorship provided by head coach Dick Blood. The discipline he exacts and the passion he invests in his players has resulted in success but, more importantly, the establishment of a tradition of excellence in Cornell Softball that is well known for 4.0 students, leadership on campus and an uncommon level of discipline found within a collegiate athletics program. Most recent Big Red success includes two consecutive Ivy championships and the selection of two Cornellians as the Ivy League Player and Ivy League Pitcher of the Year!

on the national stage Future Cornell Hall of Fame head coaches, Lou Duesing and Nathan Taylor, have led Cornell to unprecedented — almost unbelievable — success as mentors of our Big Red program. For example, our men have won eight consecutive Heps outdoor championships while our women have won eight of the last nine titles. The indoor Heps record is similar. Lou is an accomplished and highly recognized distance coach while Nathan is considered by many to be the best jumps coach in the nation. Add the considerable talent and expertise provided by a terrific assistant coaching staff and a recipe for extraordinary performance is complete.

on the national stage EARC Coach of the Year, Todd Kennett, made a name for himself when he led the Cornell men’s lightweight program to three consecutive IRA championships and four consecutive trips across THE POND to compete at Henley. Many interested followers of the program wondered if he would make a seamless transition to the leadership of the heavyweights as well as to the broader responsibiity of the Spirit of ‘57 Director. After the varsity eights bronze medal performance at the IRA in which all Ivy and EARC rivals were defeated, no one is wondering any longer. Teamed with world champion Bob Staley ‘57, a host of Cornellians and friends of Cornell Rowing have succeeded in launching a capital project to expand and renovate Collyer Boathouse, re-purpose the Robison Shell House and add a substantial storage facility. The critical project is scheduled for completion this spring.
