[ 7 ]
Staff Paul Zarach is in his first season as the head coach of the Ithaca High boy’s hockey team after a very successful tenure as the head coach of the Little Red girl’s program. Zarach coached the girl’s team for 10 years and led Ithaca to the state (NYSGVIHL) championship in 2002, 2003 and 2011, with four championship appearances overall. A 1999 graduate of the State University of New York at Cortland, Zarach is in his 13th year as a physical education instructor in the Ithaca City School District. Prior to his arrival in Ithaca, Paul worked for the Syracuse Crunch and also substituted in several school districts. Paul is a native of Hyde Park, New York where he graduated from F.D. Roosevelt High School in 1994. While he has been a head coach for other sports during his time in Ithaca, Coach Zarach is most passionate about the game of hockey; he has been playing hockey for over 33 years.

NYSPHSAA Division I Hockey Tournament History for the Ithaca Little Red 1980 – L ake Placid claimed championship honors in the inaugural state final, defeating Ithaca 4-1. Lake Placid finished the season 25-4. 1982 – M assena defeated Ithaca 4-1 for the Division I Championship 1984 – I thaca gained sweet revenge for past failures against Massena by rallying past the Red Raiders in the semifinals, and overcoming an early deficit against Rome Free Academy to defeat the Black Knights 7-3. Stellar goaltending by Ithaca freshman Shane Sherwood led the Little Red to the first state championship for Section 4. 1987 – A well-disciplined defensive minded Ithaca team made a very impressive showing in the tournament semifinal by defeating a high scoring Batavia team 3 – 0. In the championship game, Ithaca rallied from behind to defeat Massena 5-3. It was the second state tournament championship for Coach Art Cicchetti and the Little Red. 1994 – I n the semifinals, Ithaca and Suffern were involved in a real grinder, with Ithaca holding on to a 1-0 lead until the last minute of play in the 3rd period, when Suffern tied the game with 52 seconds remaining. At 2:13 of the third overtime period, Ithaca’s Josh Taube put the puck past Suffern net minder Mike Cunningham to send the Little Red to the finals. It was not any easier for Ithaca in the finals, as the Little Red held on to defeat Niskayuna of Schenectady 3 -2 to win their third state championship. Todd Kathan was the offensive hero for Ithaca with two goals. 1999 – C lutch goaltending by Dave Wrisley and goals by John Van Benschoten, Paul Sylvester, and Chris Uber powered Ithaca to a 3-1 win over Greece in a semifinal game. The championship game promised to be a low scoring game as both Ithaca and Saratoga brought reputations of having stingy defenses into the game. Saratoga opened the scoring at 14:42 of the first period. That was the only scoring until 2:05 left in the 3rd period, when Saratoga scored again. Saratoga concluded the scoring with an empty-net goal with 30 seconds remaining to send the Blue Streaks home as state champions with a 3-0 victory over No. 1 ranked Ithaca (26 -1-1). Saratoga’s empty net goal marked the only time all season that Ithaca had allowed more than two goals in one game. 2000 – I thaca cruised past Seton Catholic in the semifinal game 4-1 with goals from Sam Grossman, Dustin Brown, Adam Moore, and Matt Caren. Meanwhile Saratoga beat Massena in the other semi-final game to set up a rematch of the 1999 State Championship game between Saratoga and Ithaca. This championship game was like none other. It was essentially won in the first four minutes of the game with the fastest hat trick in state hockey history. Matt Caren of Ithaca scored three goals during one shift in a span of 46 seconds (at 3:11, 3:22, and 3:57 of the first period). Chris Uber scored a fourth goal for Ithaca in the second period to end the scoring, Matt Caren earned tournament MVP honors, and four other players (Mark Bianchi, Sam Grossman, Chris Uber, and Dave Wrisley) were named to the all-tournament team. Rich Armstrong became the second coach in Ithaca history to bring a team to the state finals in two consecutive years. Ithaca finished the season 26-3. 2003 – I thaca won a hard fought quarterfinal game against Shenendehowa 3-2 to advance to the Final Four in Utica for the third time in four years. In the state semifinals Brockport, the eventual state champion, defeated IHS 3-1. Ithaca ended its season 21-5-2. 2004 – F or the fourth time since 1999, Ithaca and the Shenendehowa Plainsman met in a state tournament quarterfinal game. Ithaca had ended “Shen’s” season with victories in 1999, 2000, and 2003. In 2004,

however, playing the first New York State tournament game at IHS’s new home at The Rink, Shenendehowa broke the Ithaca win streak with a hard fought 2-1 victory over the Little Red. Ithaca ended the season with a 19-5-3 record. 2007 – A fter 12 periods of hockey during a 24-hour stretch, Ithaca claimed its fifth state title in the second overtime. Sean Seyler had the game-winning goal. The semifinal game against Suffern lasted three periods and then four overtimes of scoreless hockey. The game then went into a shootout before Ithaca pulled out the victory. In the championship game, the Little Red stuck to its defensive style and gutted out the win. Freshman goaltender Andy Iles had 36 saves. 2010 – O nce in a blue moon can a team play a playoff game on its home ice. The 2009-10 Ithaca boy’s hockey team was presented with this opportunity. After weeks of preparation, the Little Red was set to play Saratoga Springs in the quarterfinal round.
