RIVALRY FAST FACTS

• The Lancaster-Depew rivalry has been a fixture in the Twin Villages since 1919. • The teams met twice in 1919, 1925, 1926 and 1932. The second game in 1932 was a charity event to benefit the Milk Fund for undernourished pupils from both schools. • In 1928, 1930, 1932 the game was played on Thanksgiving. • Lancaster coach, Bill Kling, had a 10-1-2 record against Depew. • Before overtime was brought in, there were six tie games, four scoreless. • The game has been played continuously since 1941. There were three breaks in the series, between 1921-1924, the year 1929 and 1933-1940. • Lancaster’s Joe Moley returned an interception 105 yards in the 1971 game, won by Lancaster, 37-6. • During World War II there was a scare that the world was going to end. Doomsday was predicted on a fall night in 1944, the same night as the big game. The deadline came and went with Lancaster coach John Java getting on the public address system and proclaiming: “Ladies and gentlemen. If the world is going to end, at least we can say we spent our last hours on this earth watching Lancaster High School football.”

HONORING MR. MYSZKA

This year we are pleased to honor the tremendous contributions of Mr. Edward J. Myszka, who retired in June as the Superintendent of the Lancaster Central School District. Mr. Myszka enjoyed a 46-year career with the district. Mr. Myszka had been superintendent since 2007, and he was the first-ever alumnus to be named superintendent of the district. Mr. Myszka also served the district as a business teacher, chair of the business department for 12 years, advisor to the DECA club, vice president of the Lancaster Central Teachers Association, and assistant superintendent of business and support services for 27 years. As assistant superintendent and superintendent, Mr. Myszka shepherded the school district through both good times and bad, overseeing a period of declining enrollment that saw the closing of two schools and difficult staffing layoffs, to Lancaster’s greatest period of growth in the late ‘90s and early this decade, which led to the building of a new school, improvements to existing schools, and technology advancements that weren’t even on the drawing board when Mr. Myszka began his career. Mr. Myszka was honored by the Lancaster Lions as their 2007 Educator of the Year, and received the Business First Pathfinders Award in 2005. More recently, Mr. Myszka was recognized by the Western New York Educational Service Council with their Superintendents Award for Excellence. Mr. Myzska and his wife, Marcia, are the parents of three grown children: Joelle, Adam, and Jason, all graduates of Lancaster High School. “I have always loved Lancaster schools and will continue to be a staunch supporter and fan,” Mr. Myszka said as he addressed the board regarding his retirement. “I learned from my mother and father to work hard, give my very best, and treat everyone with a sense of respect and integrity. I hope that I have made them proud,” Mr. Myszka said.

MR. EDWARD MYSZKA

“A lifetime of contributions to the school he loves”

CHRIS WANAT MEMORIAL FUND MODIFIED REDSKINS The Chris Wanat Memorial Fund was formed in 1993 after the untimely death of Wanat, an all-star linebacker from the 1988 Rich Stadium championship team. Wanat was a student at Brockport when he drowned in the Erie Canal. Each year a collegebound senior is presented a $1,500 check in Wanat’s memory.

PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY

The memory of Chris Wanat continues to be a source of inspiration for Lancaster High School football players. Ryan Radke was the latest Redskin touched by the influence as he was named winner of the annual Wanat award during a ceremony in July. Ryan was unable to attend the ceremony because of his obligation to playing college football at AldersonBroaddus in West Virginia but his family accepted the award on his behalf. Radke’s family received the honor from Brian Wild, Athletic Director, Assistant football coach and a teammate of Wanat’s. Radke will use the $1,500 scholarship toward his education at AldersonBroaddus College. Ryan played quarterback last fall for the Redskins. He rushed for almost 700 yards and scored 11 TD’s on the ground.
