e are certainly excited about the upcoming season and the opportunity to be successful in a very competitive Ivy League. We were a very young team last year, starting 33 different players for the first time in their careers. Although there were growing pains, each player gained valuable experience that only comes from real game action. However, they now understand the level of expectation regarding the commitment necessary to win a championship. Our optimism has increased due to our players’ improved understanding of our offensive and defensive terminology, as well as having an additional year to mature both physically and mentally. Fundamentally, we are a better football team in all areas and, as a result, we are anxious to see the improvement on the field during the upcoming season. Returning quarterback Jeff Matthews, the Ivy League Rookie of the Year last season, had an outstanding spring and fall camp. He has changed both physically (dropped 17 pounds from 228 to 212) and mentally. Jeff is stronger and understands the game at a different level. He continues to build his skills and his overall knowledge and is becoming a great decision maker. The number one quality that a quarterback must possess is appropriate decision making. A quarterback must also be an accurate passer and be both mentally and physically tough. Jeff possesses all of these qualities. On the offensive line, Bob Bullington is the anchor. He is a highly committed individual that strives to be great and has a strong desire to win. Bob is our leader up front. We have made some personnel changes on the offensive line that we believe will increase our athleticism and will make us a better unit overall. Moving JC Tretter from tight end to left tackle provides needed athleticism and strength on the quarterback’s blind side. He will be a great tackle

at this level, which allows Josh Grider to move inside as opposed to playing on the edge. Having depth up front is critical and we are pleased with the development of offensive linemen Tucker Maggio, Brad Wagner, Matt Simmonds, Drew Bourassa, Drew McGowan and John Begley. Grant Gellatly, our returning tailback possesses a combination of quickness and vision. Grant is very bright and rarely makes a mistake. We also ask him to be a receiver out of the backfield. He is a very consistent performer and rarely makes mental mistakes. Troy Lewis is another returning tailback and a very dependable player. He is a strong leader, very unselfish – a coach’s dream who will do whatever we ask. He tutors the other tailbacks on our offense and invests time in the younger players to help bring them up the learning curve. Our receiving core is much improved. Last year, the only receiver that had significant previous experience in games was Shane Savage. Everyone else was new. Along with Shane, our key returners are Luke Tasker, Kurt Ondash and Alex Johnson. Each of these players

On the defensive side of the ball, we made some personnel changes to help us stop the run and to exert more pressure on the quarterback in passing situations, utilizing a more conventional front. We are not able to rely on pure speed so our defense needs to be sound fundamentally and with their assignments. We plan to implement a variety of schemes to put our players in a position to perform at a higher level since we have a much better understanding of what each player does well. Discipline in execution will be the key to better performance for the defense. The quality of our incoming class will allow us to play more players in the defensive front this year. These players include Junior Togiaso (6’1” 285 lbs); Shane McManamon (6’2” 280 lbs); and Cadell Williams (6’1” 250 lbs). We believe that these young men will be outstanding players in this league.

Brad is a very accurate kicker – definitely a weapon for us. We do not have to take chances attempting difficult 3rd and long plays in scoring territory because we have a quality kicker in Brad who will put points on the board for us. Brad is also an excellent directional kicker on kick-offs with good depth on his kicks. The Ivy League will be even more competitive this year. Every team has a quality quarterback, plays good defense and is well coached. Anyone can win on a given weekend and it should be a fun season for all our fans to watch!

You will see some new players supporting our secondary. Josh Barut, Andrew Nelson and Rush Miller will join upperclassmen Andrew Brown and Michael Hernandez at the safety position. These young players bring a great combination of high football intelligence and physicality. They have good instincts, play hard and like to hit! We have experience returning in the linebacker core with Brandon Lainhart, Cody Roberts and Brett Buehler. Freshman Taylor Betros will likely help us this year as well. He is a natural, quality football player who understands the game. Men’s W
e are very excited about the 2011 men’s soccer season, as we expect to put together the best attributes of my first two years directing the program. During the 2009 campaign, we showed off a potent offensive attack, and last season, we demonstrated our ability to stop opposing offenses. This season, we expect to pair together a strong offensive attack with our aggressive defense, and challenge for one of the top spots in the Ivy League and a berth in the NCAA tournament.
One of our key philosophies in our program is what a player did in the past is irrelevant. How the player is performing in the present determines whether or not he plays. This philosophy is understood by, and applies to, every player on the roster. It is my belief that by not guaranteeing players a starting role or a certain number of minutes per game, it will foster increased competition in practice, which in turn will make every member of our team better.

We also have a strong senior class led by Scott Caldwell, Jimmy Lannon and Kyle Parsons in the midfield, as well as forwards Chase Aaronson and Will Ogden. Our team structure is also set up to provide leadership throughout each of our classes. With our team council, we are always looking for players to step up into leadership roles and strengthen our team chemistry. We continue to expect our returning players to foster an inclusive environment for our incoming players, a key point of emphasis given the short time we have as a unit to prepare for the start of the season. We encourage you to come out and support our team this fall. Our goals are the same, in that we will compete for an Ivy League title—our league is one of the most competitive in all of college soccer—and to earn a berth in the NCAA tournament; we realize that the most important game on our schedule is the next one. We fully expect the 2011 season to be a truly outstanding one for Cornell soccer. Thanks for your support! — Jaro

he 2011 season brings a lot of excitement and change to the Cornell women’s soccer program. The Big Red welcomes two new staff members: Megan Ramey and Deli Plourde. Ramey joins the program as lead assistant after a very successful six-year coaching stint at Texas State University. She played a major role in helping the Bobcats post three consecutive winning seasons, including a pair of undefeated regular campaigns and a 2008 NCAA tournament berth. Ramey is a 2002 Western Michigan graduate, and was a goalkeeper for her Alma Mater. Along with many other duties, she will be working with the Cornell goalkeepers this season. Plourde played for me while I was an assistant coach at Binghamton University. She was a three-time captain, and in 2004 helped the team to a first ever appearance in the NCAA tournament. Plourde will be working closely with the center-midfield. We are excited to announce that second-team All-Ivy and captain Sidra Bonner ’12 has been named one of 30 finalists for the LOWES Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for this prestigious award, a student-athlete must be classified as a NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in the four areas of community, character, classroom and competition. Sidra, who boasts a 3.4 GPA, is studying biology and society with a minor in global health. She has accomplished a great deal during her Big Red career and has contributed in so many ways to the

Cornell community, as well as on an international level. The award will be given to one male candidate and one female candidate at the end of the season. We wish Sidra good luck! Just being around the team, you can feel the excitement of the season. The team’s confidence is buoyed from coming off 2010 in which the Big Red recorded its most wins since 2005. With several strong returning players and a veteran senior class, we are confident that we can build upon this success, and that the program will continue to grow. All the best, — Danielle

here will be lots of changes on the Cornell field hockey front this season. With the graduation of six outstanding senior starters from last year’s Ivy League runner up squad, the Big Red has a new look this season. The changes have created lots of positive competition for playing time. We are pleased with the team’s development and performance over the spring and are excited about the potential of this year’s squad.
Olivia Boyd ’12 and Alex Botte ’12 will serve as co-captains and provide quality leadership to this year’s young squad. Although 15 of our 23 players will be underclassmen, the team can be counted on to compete in true Big Red fashion. Expect to see a team that defends with passion and attacks with speed. The goalkeeping of Botte and Carolyn Horner ’14 will provide a foundation of the defense and will be one of the strongest combinations in the league. Ivy Co-Rookie of the year Hannah Balleza ’14 is expected to continue to provide the offensive spark she showed when she finished second on the team in scoring in her freshmen season.

O
ur identity this 2011 season will be defined by our results on the court, but also by what this team has built off the court and in the past seven months in the off season. Every team needs leaders and an idea of where they want to go. Our goal is to return to the upper level of the Ivy League and be in contention for the title. In order to achieve this, our team has invested time off the court focusing on developing our team identity and identifying standards for ourselves. When the whistle blows, there is a balance that must happen among personal and team execution, mental and physical performance, intensity and focus, and maximizing our strengths while minimizing our opponents’ opportunities. This is not an easy task, but the Cornell volleyball team is committed to pursuing this balance in 2011. The past spring and the first two weeks of pre-season have been vital in our skill development and game understanding. The team returned in great physical shape (thanks to Coach Howley’s tutelage) ready to tackle the new season. When we started practicing on August 19th, we were able to jump right into team training because of our conditioning and large returning core, which consists of 13 returnees and four freshmen. In our captains, we have strong leadership with Risa Ka’awa ’12, Madeleine Przybyl ’12, and Meagan Tatum ’12. Each has different attributes that help focus and guide our squad. Having 17 athletes provides variety and strong competition, and balance arises through personal development and the focus on winning. As we face opponents, we need to be disciplined in our technique so that we can focus on match play and execution.
DiPastina ’13. In addition, Christine Hibler ’14, Elly Plappert ’14, Molly Casey ’13, Katherine Stone ’15 and Jaime Trout ’15 will add extra punch to the offense. Speedy Katie Laventure ’13 is coming off a strong sophomore campaign and will be called upon to play a larger role in the Big Red midfield. Promising Ann DiPastina ’15 and Alaina Skalski ’15 will provide quality depth, along with Rachel Oidtman ’15. The graduation of last year’s entire starting Click Here to backline will create an opportunity for many visit the players to step up. Versatile Mallory Bannon FIELD HOCKEY ’14 will play a major role in the reshaping of the WEBSITE defense. Genna Collins ’13 successfully made the transition from the midfield the past two seasons and Paige Mollineaux ’13 gained valuable experience last season in relief. Rounding out a deep backfield are Shannon Berry ’14, Ali Guenthner ’15 and sophomore transfer Keelin Bannon ’14, along with Alex Robson ’13 and Izzy Fratt ’14 who are both coming off a strong spring season. We know that the keys to team success will be the ability of our returnees to assume a larger responsibility and how quickly our young squad comes together. We have a lot of confidence in the team’s commitment and character, and are excited about the challenges ahead. See you at Dodson Field! —Donna

How we work together and balance all the aspects of the season will determine our success on the court. We are talented and have such determination, competitiveness, and dedication. This is the Big Red way and the tradition we strive to uphold and demonstrate on the court. The 2011 season will continue to be one of growth and improvement as in the years past, but with a clearer focus on whom we are and what we want to achieve. Go Big Red! —Sarah

he 2011 women’s cross country Heps Championships promises to be one of the most competitive in years because so many of the schools have national caliber athletes and legitimate aspirations for success at the Heps and beyond. The Big Red will be among the teams who expect to be in the mix. I’ve been very pleased with the hard work that the team put in this summer and, as always, our senior leaders have been terrific in getting newcomers and returnees on the same page. Captain Meghan Brown ’12 has led the charge to get the entire squad to do all the little things that are required to be successful. Her classmate, Janel Parker ’12, is back after a year in which she was voted most improved in BOTH cross country and track. Based on results from last year, Cornell has one of the most accomplished groups of harriers to return to campus in several years. Kelsey Karys ’13 and Katie Kellner ’13 broke a 19-year old school record to finish first and second at the Heps in the 10K this spring, with Kellner claiming the record from Karys three weeks later at the first round of the NCAAs. Welsh national champion Jade Williams, Illinois state runner-up Marianne Collard, New York prep stars Christine Driscoll and Sydney Williams, New Hampshire state champion Corey Dowe, and California stars Anna Johnson and Katie Johnson have all looked very strong in the early going.

The good news is the junior class has been viewed as one of the more talented groups of long distance runners to represent Cornell in decades. After playing complementary roles for two years, it’s time for this class to lead.
Four long-distance oriented juniors—Brett Kelly, Bobby Micikas, Matt McCullough, and Adam Trofa—will be looking to translate the success they’ve enjoyed in track to cross country. Additionally, two top middle distance juniors, Nick Wade, the Ivy League champion at 800, and Andy Arnold, who spent the summer training in Kenya, will also look to help the cause. The return of junior Kevin Johnson, who as a freshman was the first Cornell man to score in the 5,000 at the Ivy championships in his rookie campaign since 1991, would really help the team if he regains his old form. Johnson is back after missing his entire sophomore year due to two surgeries to treat compartment syndrome in his legs. Some talented underclassmen will also be looking to contribute. Top sophomores include Gabe Heck, a stalwart member of the team’s top 5 as a freshman, and local walk-on Max Groves, who has been the most improved runner so far in the team’s early practices. Normally it takes a year or two for male distance runners to be strong enough to contribute at the college level. But Ben Potts, sixth in the NJ state cross country meet, comes in with stellar high school credentials, and walk-on David Melly has impressed in the first few practices. Without a proven front-runner for the first time in almost a decade, our young team will be looking early in the year to run together as a group and use team synergy to build momentum and confidence as it prepares for the championship meets later in the season. The Ivy championships will certainly prove to be a huge challenge for everyone in the league not named Princeton as the Tigers return the bulk of last year’s team that finished 12th in the country, the highest placement by an Ivy men’s team since Dartmouth was ninth in 1989. The Tigers are ranked #11 in the pre-season national poll. — Nathan Head Track & Cross Country Coach

FROM THE
The Terry Cullen Head Coach of Sprint Football,
Terry Cullen
COACH’s DESK
T
he last three years the Cornell sprint football team has been very good. The 2011 team will be young, especially thin, and must prove itself. A strong group of 13 starters return from last season and should provide excellent leadership. However, the loss to graduation of 26 senior letter winners and a small freshman class of only 10 players has resulted in a smaller than usual squad. The league will be very tough. Army and Pennsylvania return strong squads from last year, while Navy is always the League favorite. Mansfield College and Post University, two newcomers to the League, have introduced recruiting to the sport, and will welcome big freshman classes to their relative programs. Princeton has a new coaching staff and a positive outlook for this fall. This is a talented league! There are three units on a football team: offense, defense and kicking. Offense: It will be a completely new look on the offensive side of the ball. The loss to graduation of both Elliot Corey ’11, an outstanding “option quarterback”, and three outstanding offensive linemen will result in a complete revamping of the offense. Brendan Miller ’14 is the heir apparent at quarterback
and is a “passing QB”. The offensive line is new, and will struggle with the run blocking, but will hopefully develop as pass protectors.

Defense: Replacing two outstanding AllLeague linebackers will be challenging. Four freshmen and a sophomore will battle it out for the two most important positions on the defensive side of the ball. The rest of the defensive unit looks solid. Kicking: Both the two-time AllLeague kicking specialist and last year’s All-League punter have graduated. Replacements will have to be found among several new faces. It will be an interesting year. —Terry

Joe Nieuwendyk ’88 will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto on Nov. 14, 2011. The 20-year NHL performer won Stanley Cup championships at Calgary, Dallas and New Jersey. In 1995, he received the NHL award for the player who best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice, and makes noteworthy humanitarian contributions. Nieuwendyk, a member of the Cornell Athletics Hall of Fame, recently was named one of the top 50 greatest players in ECAC hockey history. He is currently general manager of the Dallas Stars of the NHL.
UCENY ’07 TRIPPED UP IN THE 1500 AT IAAF WORLDS Morgan Uceny ’07, running for the United States team at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, got caught in traffic with 550 meters left in the 1500. She got tripped by the runner in front of her, and had no chance to stay on her feet when
the front-runner fell. She finished 10th in 4:19.71. To earn the trip to the IAAF championships, Uceny won her first USA 1500 title (4:03.91) at the USATF Championships.
BIG RED ROWERS HELP U.S. AT U23 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS Cornell rowing did well at the 2011 World Rowing Under 23 Championships held in Amsterdam from July 20-24. Chris Massey ’13 rowed on an American heavyweight quad that was fourth, which is the best ever placement for the U.S. in that event. Heavyweight Commodore Jim Voter ’12 (heavyweight straight 4) and Solveig Imsdahl ’13 (lightweight women’s quad) were in U.S. boats that finished sixth. Ray DeVirgillis ’11 (lightweight straight four) finished ninth, while lightweight teammates Ed O’Neill ’14 and Dylan Gould ’13 (lightweight double) placed 21st overall.
PANNELL ’12 WALKED 2011 ESPY CARPET
Big Red lacrosse attackman Rob Pannell, the Division I national player of the year, was nominated for a 2011 ESPY Award and walked the red carpet at the award show in Los Angeles in July. Pannell was nominated in the category of Best Male College Athlete, but the award was won by Brigham Young basketball player Jimmer Fredette. The first Cornellian to twice win the Division I national attackman of the year, he is a two-time firstteam All-American and Ivy League Player of the Year.
