STRUCTURES IN A LANDSCAPE The landscape of inland Australia is harsh, hot and often very flat so the rare clusters of mining equipment, agricultural buildings, silos and storage tanks are conspicuous and stand out like gigantic sculptures. In contrast, the Antarctic is mountainous, cold and threatening. However the stations’ built structures are remarkably similar consisting of utilitarian buildings and storage tanks.

Among the artists I most admire is Cezanne and, in his mature years, he attempted to give underlying structure to his landscapes by rendering them in terms of cones, cylinders and spheres. As a pale homage to the master, instead of copying his style or even attempting to apply his theory, I have found industrial, agricultural and mining structures that are mostly made from simple geometric forms.

THE BROTHERS GRUCHY The Brothers Gruchy, Tim and Mic grew up in Bundaberg through the sixties and seventies. Five years apart, it wasn’t until the mideighties that they began working together extensively. Most of their collaborative undertakings are in the performative arts. Together they pioneered the use of video and multimedia in theatre, opera, contemporary dance, musicals and commercial projects. Tim has gradually moved increasingly into the world of exhibitions and

installations, whilst Mic works mainly in theatre along with editing and producing film and television. Across an enormous range of activities they continue to work together and separately, informing each others practice and indeed the creative use of technology. Together The Brothers Gruchy continue their creative journey from Bundaberg into the world using digital media and technology to inform our past and future.

THE VERA SCARTH-JOHNSON EXHIBITION Vera Scarth-Johnson was a horticulturalist and botanical painter. She lived in Bundaberg from the early 1950’s until 1972, growing tobacco and sugar cane and honing her artistic skills. She was only the second woman in the area to obtain a cane assignment. In the mid 1960’s she began a long association with the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, England; sending them paintings and drawings and seeds of the plants and flowers of our region.

7

In her lifetime she published two books of her botanical paintings and in 1995 was awarded the Order of Australia for her contribution to art and the environment.

She donated 93 hectares of heathland to be maintained as a wildlife reserve in the Coonarr area and this was named the Vera Scarth-Johnson Wildlife Reserve in 2006. Her contribution to Australian botany is as significant as Bert Hinkler’s contribution to aviation yet very few of the current generation have ever heard of her. Many of her paintings can be found in the homes (and garages) of Bundaberg residents who may not be aware of their artistic, scientific and historical significance. Around fifty paintings, plus photographs and memorabilia have already been located and permission granted by their owners to be loaned for the exhibition.

DRAWING FROM NATURE Join artist Adrienne Williams on this early morning sketching trip to the Bundaberg Botanical Gardens. Using watercolour, gouache and charcoal, beginners will learn easy and practical tips for sketching and painting outdoors, while more experienced artists can wade right into the surrounding botanical landscape. Working ‘en plein air’, or ‘in the open air’, allows us to observe and edit the subject, make colour notes, enjoy and experience the site, and it brings a notable freshness to our art making.

TALK OF THE TOWN For Sue, this exhibition offers an opportunity to revisit early works on paper, created with the red dirt of the Cordalba region, and to reimagine them using encaustic techniques. The whimsical nature that forms a thread through Sue’s arts practice is once again celebrated in these new artworks. In contrast, Nita’s works play on her strong drawing and painting technique and observation of life in the Cordalba region. The artworks are a joyous celebration of people and events, and like Sue’s, extend from the literal to the emotional.

The diverse artworks that form this exhibition showcase each artist’s unique style and preferred media, while also maintaining a connectedness, in the same way these two women connected and forged a friendship over

their shared artistic passion. GALLERIES

Turning east off the Isis Highway, crossing over the rise towards the cane rail crossing, the picture postcard image of the township of Cordalba unfolds. This small rural community provides the fertile ground for Talk of the Town, an exhibition celebrating the individual stories of respected artists, Sue Hutton and Nita Rosher, who both settled in the area over twenty years ago.

DEMENTIA IS A PERSON: THE LEAF PROJECT What is the symbolism of leaves and people living with Dementia? In the process of change when the leaf turns into a different colour and character it may still hold onto the tree before finally drifting down to the ground to rest. The life cycle is a process of growth and rebirth. The leaves remind us that people living with

dementia leave behind a rich tapestry of colour and character that forms an indelible imprint on the family and friends to serve as a foundation for new growth and fuel for renewal. Even at this stage of the life cycle we recognize the beauty in fallen leaves as much as the beauty and story of everyone throughout their stages of dementia.

ROBERT MACPHERSON GALLERIES

BOSS DROVERS This touring installation of 200 drawings is only a fragment of the 2400 individual sheets Robert MacPherson made over two decades that together form the single huge work ‘BOSS DROVERS’ 1996–2014.

15

Boss Drovers demonstrates several aspects of MacPherson’s practice, especially the way he plays with ‘traditional’ aspects of art, such as landscape, portraiture and the authority of an artist’s signature. Each sheet includes the portrait and

name of a boss drover responsible for moving livestock and teams of stockmen along the great pastoral stock routes of Australia. MacPherson’s collected pages reveal poetic markers of places and people whose identities and life in the country are in danger of fading from view. The droving occupation itself is now almost a relic, as generations of horseriding ringers are replaced by trucks on our highways, and families move off the land.

I mage: Robert MacPherson, 1000 Frog Poems: 1000 Boss Drovers (“Yellow Leaf Falling”) For H.S. (detail) 1996-2014, graphite, ink and stain on paper, 2400 sheets: 30 x 42.5cm.

Revolution has taken place at Manor Farm. The pigs have assumed control and all the

animals, fueled by enthusiastic camaraderie and guided by a set of self-imposed rules, are promised a better life free from the selfserving greed of humans. However, it is not long until the rules that promised equality and freedom become the shackles that bind the animals once again.

THEATRE

Animal Farm, one of the most enduring political commentaries returns in a multi-award winning, critically-acclaimed theatre production. George Orwell’s intensely powerful fairy tale allegorizes and satirizes communist governments while illustrating with stunning simplicity how greed and power corrupts with devastating consequences to all who yield.

EDWARD THE EMU

Edward is bored with his lot. Being the only emu at the zoo has left him feeling glum and under the impression that the grass is greener in everyone else’s enclosure. Maybe being a seal, or a lion, or a snake might be a better option in life for a lonely bird? Convinced that the other creatures are more popular, Edward breaks ranks and goes to find the fun.

Meanwhile the Keepers are in hot pursuit, hunting high and low to relocate their crowd-pleasing, much-loved feathered attraction. Edward stays one step ahead until he’s ready to head home; concluding that being an emu might be just right after all. Back at his pen, a very shocking but welcome surprise awaits... he’s been replaced by the rather wonderful Edwina the Emu!

MANON

JUDY

Exhilarating soprano Lisette Oropesa stars as the irresistible title character, the tragic beauty who yearns for the finer things in life, in Laurent Pelly’s revealing production.

Winter 1968 and showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London to perform in a sell-out run at The Talk of the Town. It is 30 years since she shot to global stardom in The Wizard of Oz, but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown.

Tenor Michael Fabiano is the besotted Chevalier des Grieux, whose desperate love for Manon proves their undoing. Maurizio Benini conducts Massenet’s sensual score. Sung in French with English subtitles.

As she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians, and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her wit and warmth shine through. Even her dreams of romance seem undimmed as she embarks on a courtship with Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband. And yet Judy is fragile. After working for 45 of her 47 years, she is exhausted; haunted by memories of a childhood lost to Hollywood; gripped by a desire to be back home with her kids. Will she have the strength to go on?

IN DEVELOPMENT As well as being a venue for hire for touring companies and a presenter of performing arts work of state and national significance, the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre is actively involved in commissioning and development of new work with a specific connection to the Bundaberg Region. This is about investing in the future of our industry and of Australian artists. Work in development is listed below.

BLAKDANCE PERFORMING COUNTRY BlakDance’s Performing Country is a purposefully crafted on Country residency for contemporary Indigenous choreographers to develop new dance works and engage with local Indigenous communities in regional Queensland. The Moncrieff Entertainment Centre is a partner in the state-wide consortium of Performing Country, investing in the creative development of a new work by Wakka Wakka and Kombumerri choreographer and dancer Katina Olsen. Katina will be in Bundaberg from 16 – 20 March, working with local community as part of the development of a work about Indigenous cosmology where the dancer is the link between Country and the stars. Katina has said, “I’ve spent my career as a dancer dancing other people’s stories. This is my chance to come back to country and tell my own story.” Katina is in the early stage of development and her time in the Bundaberg Region will be spent in community-based research.

75

Performing Country is made possible through the generous contributions of our partners Gympie Regional Council, Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre, Moncrieff Entertainment Centre and Rockhampton Regional Council. Performing Country has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through the Arts Queensland Backing Indigenous Arts initiative.

FLORENCE BROADHURST Those who know Florence Broadhurst’s story know she was born and raised in Mt Perry and had her first singing and music lessons in Bundaberg. She had a rich and complex life and ended up being one of the world’s most sought-after designers. You will see one of her more iconic designs on the façade of the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery as a nod to her work and her heritage. The Galleries team are developing a new exhibition based on Broadhurst’s work and Council has commissioned well-known Australian playwright, Katherine Thomson, to write a new play about the life of the famous design icon. Both the exhibition and play will be launched in Bundaberg in 2021 – two world premieres all at once.

THE ARK Through the Regional Arts Development Fund Artist in Residence fund, a strategic initiative overseen by Council, a team of artists are being supported in their initial creative development of a new work focused on a retelling of the story of Noah’s Ark. Rather than biblical times, the story is set in a post-apocalyptic dystopian era, with a quest to save the Reef from extinction. Among the main characters is the Loggerhead turtle, Bundaberg’s icon. This new work, aimed for a 2022 launch, is being imagined as a large scale public performance with the potential as a festival piece. Lead artists are Toni Houston, writer, and Richard Todd, producer.
