Around the world, people love. They sing for love, they dance for love, they compose poems and stories about love. They tell myths and legends about love. They pine for love, they live for love, they kill for love, and they die for love. Anthropologists have found evidence of romantic love in 170 societies. They’ve never found a society that did not have it. HELEN FISHER, THE BRAIN IN LOVE
I Want To Know What Love Is throws a spotlight on long-buried memories, bedroom fantasies, crushes and conquests. Acclaimed Queensland performance collective The Good Room asked members of the public to anonymously submit their stories of love - fragments and memories, confessions and admissions – and they’ve transformed those secret submissions into magnificent declarations centre stage. Submission #87: “It’s been years, but I still think of you and wonder ‘What could have been?’” Submission #346: “I choose to say it did not fail. It just finished.” Submission #302: “Jemma forever xo” Following a sold-out premiere season in Brisbane Festival 2014 with Queensland Theatre, the work had a subsequent sold-out return at Brisbane Powerhouse’s Wonderland Festival in 2015, and a Melbourne season at Provocare Festival in 2017. This thrilling production is on national tour in 2018. This is for everyone who’s ever loved. Anyone who’s ever hurt. This is for you.

100 YEARS OF THE HISTORY OF DANCE AS TOLD BY ONE MAN IN 60 MINUTES WITH AN ENERGETIC GROUP FINALE CREATED AND PERFORMED BY JOSEPH SIMONS
Elegantly abstract, fast, funny...brilliant SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
Jacob arrives at school for his presentation on his favourite topic: the most influential choreographers since the 1920s. He’s booked the projector, he’s prepared his slides, he’s rehearsed all the dances and Mrs Coruthers has started the stopwatch. But will one hour be enough? From Martha Graham to Bob Fosse, to Paula Abdul, Jacob knows it all. Through a rollercoaster of dance moves we explore the broken families, addictions and political escapades that fuelled the lives of these extraordinary artists. Over the hour, Jacob discovers that you can study your heroes all you like, but it doesn’t make your own path any clearer. If he wants to be just like his idols, it’s time to stop studying and start creating. Dance isn’t a foreign academic concept, it’s for everyone... and it feels good!

POSSUM MAGIC
BASED ON THE BOOK BY MEM FOX AND JULIE VIVAS
Monkey Baa isn’t just about putting good books on stage. It’s an adventure of the mind and spirit. It makes kids think as well as feel. Live theatre is kids’ heritage. JACKIE FRENCH
For more than 30 years, Mem Fox’s Possum Magic has captivated and enchanted young people all over Australia. Grandma Poss loves making magic. She makes wombats blue and kookaburras pink. She makes dingoes smile and emus shrink. But one day, when danger arrives in the form of a snake, Grandma uses her most magical spell to make Hush invisible. Hush has many wonderful adventures. But being invisible isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and Hush longs to see herself again. One problem. Grandma Poss can’t find the spell to make Hush visible again. And then she remembers... this particular magic requires something more, something special, something to do with food…people food. Possum Magic takes us on a whimsical journey to cities around Australia to find the food that makes Hush visible again. Joined by an extraordinary creative team, Monkey Baa brings to life the characters, journey and love that has made Possum Magic the most-loved and best-selling Australian picture book of all time.

YAMATO THE DRUMMERS OF JAPAN Pure energy meets spiritual high. SCOTSMAN
A group of dozens of players start their performance by hitting a Japanese taiko drum made from a large 400 year-old tree. They move their whole bodies to strike the drum with everything in their souls, creating a powerful surge of energy. Their live performances are so full of intensity that they make people’s bodies jump and their hearts race faster. Audiences are overwhelmed by the beat of the music, as their bodies are uplifted in sync with the powerful sounds. This group, from beautiful Nara Prefecture in Japan, is able to exhibit great originality and innovation through this traditional Japanese musical instrument, the wadaiko (Japanese drum). This is the epitome of the Japanese spirit, a roaring sound that will make you experience new exciting adventures. Yamato was formed in 1993, debuting at a Shinto shrine festival in the group’s hometown with their original song “Hyu-ga (The sunrise).” Since then, 24 years have passed. So far they have been invited to 54 countries around the world, playing in more than 3,500 performances, and attracting 6 million viewers. Their performances, featuring various stage formations, have received raving reviews; their fame keeps spreading more and more, and the British media has even called their sound “The music of the body.” Yamato is based in a village called Asuka, known as the birthplace of Japanese culture, appearing in international performances from 6 to 10 months a year with an explosion of Yamato (ancient Japanese) spirit. They are proud to be the group with the largest number of international performances among all Japanese performing art groups.

This award-winning show tells the story of Hitler’s Daughter through the eyes of four Australian children Mark, Ben, Anna and Tracey. As the friends wait for the school bus in country Australia one rainy morning, Anna begins to tell the tale of Heidi, daughter of the most hated man in history. As Mark becomes engrossed in Anna’s story, the play switches between 1940’s Nazi Germany and contemporary Australia. Hitler’s Daughter poses powerful questions and examines moral issues in relation to society’s fears and prejudices. When Monkey Baa first presented Hitler’s Daughter in 2006, the notion of a factual and historical event being told through the ‘story’ of a fictional character was exciting in that it allowed audiences to immerse themselves in history as it came to life onstage. The audience is left with the lingering question, as Mark is: Did Hitler really have a daughter? Was she real? Today, in an age of fake news and fact manipulation, extreme ideologies and rising nationalism, there has never been a more important and relevant time to present this work. Hitler’s Daughter demands its young audiences to question the reality of truth, and notions of personal responsibility and prejudice.

HERMAN’S HERMITS THE 6 O’CLOCK HOP
When the 1960’s British Invasion hit worldwide, Herman’s Hermits were one of the biggest groups out of the UK. Their Australian No. 1 hits, ‘Mrs. Brown you’ve got a lovely daughter’ and ‘No milk today’ made the group one of the most popular groups of the day here in Australia. The No. 1’s were followed up by 8 more Top 10 hits including I’m Henry VIII, There’s a kind of hush, A must to avoid, Silhouettes and many more songs that cracked the top 20. Herman’s Hermits first toured Australia in 1966 on the ‘Caravan of Stars 66’ tour with Tom Jones in support. Since 1971 and the departure of Peter Noone to pursue a solo career in the music business, the group has never stopped. Original member Barry Whitwam has guided the band from strength to strength into one of the hardest working acts in the business - they still average more than 200 concerts per year. “It’s all about the songs”, Whitwam says, “and we were very lucky to have had a lot of hits in the sixties that people still want to hear today. We’re very lucky!” The 2018 World Tour for the band includes a comprehensive UK and European tour before they head down-under for the 6 O’Clock Hop!

Christian, a young wannabe Bohemian poet living in 1899 Paris, defies his father by joining the colorfully diverse clique inhabiting the dark, fantastical underworld of Paris’ now legendary Moulin Rouge. In this seedy but glamorous haven of sex, drugs and newlydiscovered electricity, the poet-innocent finds himself plunged into a passionate but ultimately tragic love affair with Satine, the club’s highest paid star and the city’s most famous courtesan. Their romance is played out against the infamous club - a meeting place of high life and low, where slumming aristocrats and the fashionably rich mingled with workers, artists, Bohemians, actresses and courtesans.

LA TRAVIATA New Met Music Director Yannick NézetSéguin launches his tenure by conducting Verdi’s timeless tragedy. Worldly courtesan Violetta, sung by soprano Diana Damrau, has grown tired of her dissolute life. When the pure-hearted Alfredo—tenor Juan Diego Flórez—declares his love for her, she leaves everything behind to live with him. But his family’s reputation is ruined by his association with her, and Violetta is torn between her feelings for Alfredo and her desire to protect him from scandal. Urged by the young man’s father, she tears herself away and returns to her old life. Alfredo, not knowing the real reason for her apparent betrayal, is heartbroken—and bent on revenge. Directed by Michael Mayer, this new production features a dazzling eighteenth-century setting that changes with the seasons.
ADRIANA LECOUVREUR For the first time at the Met, soprano Anna Netrebko sings the role of Adriana Lecouvreur, the eighteenth-century actress whose reallife intrigues inspired Cilea’s tragic opera. Adriana is adored by many but loves only Maurizio, sung by tenor Piotr Beczała, who adores her in return. Maurizio desperately tries to extricate himself from his previous lover, the Princess of Bouillon— mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili. When the princess discovers that Adriana is her rival, she takes desperate measures of her own. In this new production directed by Sir David McVicar, the action is partially set in a working replica of a baroque theatre. Gianandrea Noseda conducts the riveting score.

CARMEN
LA FILLE DU RÉGIMENT
Don’t miss this revival of Sir Richard Eyre’s dynamic production. Mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine plays opera’s ultimate seductress, while Roberto Alagna returns to the role of Don José, the good-hearted soldier in whom she unleashes an uncontrollable passion. Don José breaks the law, goes to prison, deserts the army and loses everything to be with Carmen. But the capricious gypsy soon tires of him and takes up instead with the bullfighter Escamillo—bass Alexander Vinogradov. She has ruined his life, but still Don José adores her, with a fierceness that can only lead to catastrophe. Composer Bizet died just three months after Carmen’s disastrous premiere, never knowing that his creation would become one of the most popular operas of all time.
Full of wit and invention, Donizetti’s comic opera is a delight. The famous aria “Ah, Mes Amis,” with its nine high Cs, is one of opera’s most show-stopping numbers.

DIE WALKÜRE DIALOGUES DES CARMÉLITES Featuring some of the most glorious music ever written—including, of course, the Ride of the Valkyries—Die Walküre is the second of the four operas that comprise Wagner’s Ring cycle, a story of monsters, gods, and humans on a superhuman scale.
When twins Siegmund and Sieglinde find each other at last, Siegmund promises to release Sieglinde from her forced marriage by killing her husband, Hunding. The god Wotan instructs Valkyrie warrior Brünnhilde to defend Hunding. But, moved by the twins’ mutual devotion, Brünnhilde refuses to obey, forging an alliance with Sieglinde that has far-reaching consequences for them both. Soprano Christine Goerke sings Brünnhilde, tenor Stuart Skelton and soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek are the love-struck twins, and Ring cycle veteran Philippe Jordan conducts.
MET Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads Poulenc’s masterpiece. As the French Revolution begins, shy Blanche, sung by mezzosoprano Isabel Leonard, becomes a novice nun under an elderly prioress—Met legend Karita Mattila. Blanche’s aristocratic family flees the Terror, but she remains behind, struggling between her fear of the guillotine and her duty to the convent. When the nuns are expelled from the convent and threatened with death, Blanche must make an agonising decision. In the shattering final scene, the nuns walk towards the guillotine singing Salve Regina: Their voices are cut off, one by one, with each stroke of the blade, until all are silenced. Poulenc’s devastating portrayal of faith and martyrdom is live in HD for the first time.

JULIE
KING LEAR
BAFTA Award-winning Vanessa Kirby (The Crown, NT Live: A Streetcar Named Desire) and Eric Kofi Abrefa (The Amen Corner) feature in the cast of this brand new production, directed by Carrie Cracknell (NT Live: The Deep Blue Sea) and filmed live from the National Theatre to cinemas.
Broadcast live from London’s West End, see Ian McKellen’s ‘extraordinarily moving portrayal’ (Independent) of King Lear in cinemas.
Wild and newly single, Julie throws a late night party. In the kitchen, Jean and Kristina clean up as the celebration heaves above them. Crossing the threshold, Julie initiates a power game with Jean – which rapidly descends into a savage fight for survival. This new version of August Strindberg’s play Miss Julie, written by Polly Stenham, remains shocking and fiercely relevant in its new setting of contemporary London.
Chichester Festival Theatre’s production received five-star reviews for its sell-out run, and transfers to the West End for a limited season. Jonathan Munby directs this ‘nuanced and powerful’ (The Times) contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s tender, violent, moving and shocking play. Considered by many to be the greatest tragedy ever written, King Lear sees two ageing fathers – one a King, one his courtier – reject the children who truly love them. Their blindness unleashes a tornado of pitiless ambition and treachery, as family and state are plunged into a violent power struggle with bitter ends.

ALL ABOUT EVE THE MADNESS OF GEORGE III Gillian Anderson and Lily James lead in All About Eve, filmed live for cinemas from the West End in London. All About Eve tells the story of Margo Channing. Legend. True star of the theatre. The spotlight is hers, always has been. But now there’s Eve. Her biggest fan. Young, beautiful Eve. The golden girl, the girl next door. But you know all about Eve…don’t you…?
Multi-award-winning drama The Madness of George III, written by one of Britain’s bestloved playwrights Alan Bennett, was also adapted into a BAFTA Award-winning film following its premiere on stage in 1991.
Lifting the curtain on a world of jealousy and ambition, this new production, asks why our fascination with celebrity, youth and identity never seems to get old. Adapted from the 1950 film “The Wisdom of Eve” starring Bette Davis.
It’s 1786 and King George III is the most powerful man in the world. But his behaviour is becoming increasingly erratic as he succumbs to fits of lunacy. With the King’s mind unravelling at a dramatic pace, ambitious politicians and the scheming Prince of Wales threaten to undermine the power of the Crown, and expose the fine line between a King and a man.

This biting dark comedy on the tribulations of young motherhood comes from the prescient pen of Diablo Cody, the genius behind Juno, Young Adult and the United States of Tara. With a radiant performance from Mackenzie Davis as Tully, and electric direction from Jason Reitman, this is a quietly radical and thoroughly modern feminist take on life as a new mother in the 21st century.

LA DOLCE VITA
OCEANS 8
Winner of the Palme D’Or at Cannes and setting the standard for world cinema in 1960, Italian maestro Federico Fellini (La Strada, 8 1/2) dramatically opened the eyes of cinema goers and critics alike with this searing critique of a celebrity-obsessed, hedonistic world as seen through the eyes of a fluff-peddling journalist.
Five years, eight months, 12 days...and counting. That’s how long Debbie Ocean has been devising the biggest heist of her life.
Marcello Rubini (Marcello Mastroianni) is a gossip columnist and would-be novelist who chronicles “the sweet life’ of fading aristocrats, second-rate movie stars and aging playboys in high society Rome in the 50s. Armed with his “paparazzi”, the philandering Marcello ultimately succumbs to loneliness and tragedy as he flees his obsessive, suicidal fiancée while vainly vying for the affections of a vivacious screen goddess (Anita Ekberg). Showcasing the sexy and truly audacious romp in the famed Trevi Fountain in glistening high definition black and white, as well as including a treasure trove of special features, La Dolce Vita remains a milestone of European cinema.
She knows what it’s going to take—a team of the best in their field, starting with her partnerin-crime Lou Miller. Together, they recruit a crew of specialists: jeweler Amita; street con Constance; expert fence Tammy; hacker Nine Ball; and fashion designer Rose. The target is a cool $150 million dollars in diamonds - diamonds that will be around the neck of world-famous actress Daphne Kluger, who will be centerstage at the event of the year, the Met Gala. The plan is rock solid, but everything will need to be flawless if the team is going to get in and get away with the ice. All in plain sight.
