100 YEARS OF THE HISTORY OF DANCE AS TOLD BY ONE MAN IN 60 MINUTES WITH AN ENERGETIC GROUP FINALE CREATED AND PERFORMED BY JOSEPH SIMONS

Elegantly abstract, fast, funny...brilliant SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

Jacob arrives at school for his presentation on his favourite topic: the most influential choreographers since the 1920s. He’s booked the projector, he’s prepared his slides, he’s rehearsed all the dances and Mrs Coruthers has started the stopwatch. But will one hour be enough? From Martha Graham to Bob Fosse, to Paula Abdul, Jacob knows it all. Through a rollercoaster of dance moves we explore the broken families, addictions and political escapades that fuelled the lives of these extraordinary artists. Over the hour, Jacob discovers that you can study your heroes all you like, but it doesn’t make your own path any clearer. If he wants to be just like his idols, it’s time to stop studying and start creating. Dance isn’t a foreign academic concept, it’s for everyone... and it feels good!

POSSUM MAGIC

BASED ON THE BOOK BY MEM FOX AND JULIE VIVAS

Monkey Baa isn’t just about putting good books on stage. It’s an adventure of the mind and spirit. It makes kids think as well as feel. Live theatre is kids’ heritage. JACKIE FRENCH

For more than 30 years, Mem Fox’s Possum Magic has captivated and enchanted young people all over Australia. Grandma Poss loves making magic. She makes wombats blue and kookaburras pink. She makes dingoes smile and emus shrink. But one day, when danger arrives in the form of a snake, Grandma uses her most magical spell to make Hush invisible. Hush has many wonderful adventures. But being invisible isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and Hush longs to see herself again. One problem. Grandma Poss can’t find the spell to make Hush visible again. And then she remembers... this particular magic requires something more, something special, something to do with food…people food. Possum Magic takes us on a whimsical journey to cities around Australia to find the food that makes Hush visible again. Joined by an extraordinary creative team, Monkey Baa brings to life the characters, journey and love that has made Possum Magic the most-loved and best-selling Australian picture book of all time.

YAMATO THE DRUMMERS OF JAPAN Pure energy meets spiritual high.  SCOTSMAN

A group of dozens of players start their performance by hitting a Japanese taiko drum made from a large 400 year-old tree. They move their whole bodies to strike the drum with everything in their souls, creating a powerful surge of energy. Their live performances are so full of intensity that they make people’s bodies jump and their hearts race faster. Audiences are overwhelmed by the beat of the music, as their bodies are uplifted in sync with the powerful sounds. This group, from beautiful Nara Prefecture in Japan, is able to exhibit great originality and innovation through this traditional Japanese musical instrument, the wadaiko (Japanese drum). This is the epitome of the Japanese spirit, a roaring sound that will make you experience new exciting adventures. Yamato was formed in 1993, debuting at a Shinto shrine festival in the group’s hometown with their original song “Hyu-ga (The sunrise).” Since then, 24 years have passed. So far they have been invited to 54 countries around the world, playing in more than 3,500 performances, and attracting 6 million viewers. Their performances, featuring various stage formations, have received raving reviews; their fame keeps spreading more and more, and the British media has even called their sound “The music of the body.” Yamato is based in a village called Asuka, known as the birthplace of Japanese culture, appearing in international performances from 6 to 10 months a year with an explosion of Yamato (ancient Japanese) spirit. They are proud to be the group with the largest number of international performances among all Japanese performing art groups.

TIME 7.30 PM TICKETS ADULT $35 PENSIONER/STUDENT $28 SCHOOL GROUPS (10+) $15

Our mission is to make opera an integral part of the cultural life of Queensland. PATRICK NOLAN – ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, OPERA QUEENSLAND

Opera Queensland presents ‘Songs to Die For’. It’s no secret that opera has death nailed.

INFO 120 MIN (INCLUDES INTERVAL)

At the heart of some of opera’s greatest moments, you’ll find a knife, bullet or poison paired with some of the most sublime music ever written. For 400 years, death has inspired iconic composers and beclouded modern legends; Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse and Janis Joplin whose songs speak as passionately to us as the music of their operatic counterparts. Songs To Die For is a cheeky nod to the over-dramatised deaths of opera’s leading characters masterfully entwined with pop classics. Presented by three of Opera Queensland’s leading artists, Songs To Die For is a celebration of the end brought to vivid life in a night where Don Giovanni meets Highway to Hell.

This award-winning show tells the story of Hitler’s Daughter through the eyes of four Australian children Mark, Ben, Anna and Tracey. As the friends wait for the school bus in country Australia one rainy morning, Anna begins to tell the tale of Heidi, daughter of the most hated man in history. As Mark becomes engrossed in Anna’s story, the play switches between 1940’s Nazi Germany and contemporary Australia. Hitler’s Daughter poses powerful questions and examines moral issues in relation to society’s fears and prejudices. When Monkey Baa first presented Hitler’s Daughter in 2006, the notion of a factual and historical event being told through the ‘story’ of a fictional character was exciting in that it allowed audiences to immerse themselves in history as it came to life onstage. The audience is left with the lingering question, as Mark is: Did Hitler really have a daughter? Was she real? Today, in an age of fake news and fact manipulation, extreme ideologies and rising nationalism, there has never been a more important and relevant time to present this work. Hitler’s Daughter demands its young audiences to question the reality of truth, and notions of personal responsibility and prejudice.

HERMAN’S HERMITS THE 6 O’CLOCK HOP

When the 1960’s British Invasion hit worldwide, Herman’s Hermits were one of the biggest groups out of the UK. Their Australian No. 1 hits, ‘Mrs. Brown you’ve got a lovely daughter’ and ‘No milk today’ made the group one of the most popular groups of the day here in Australia. The No. 1’s were followed up by 8 more Top 10 hits including I’m Henry VIII, There’s a kind of hush, A must to avoid, Silhouettes and many more songs that cracked the top 20. Herman’s Hermits first toured Australia in 1966 on the ‘Caravan of Stars 66’ tour with Tom Jones in support. Since 1971 and the departure of Peter Noone to pursue a solo career in the music business, the group has never stopped. Original member Barry Whitwam has guided the band from strength to strength into one of the hardest working acts in the business - they still average more than 200 concerts per year. “It’s all about the songs”, Whitwam says, “and we were very lucky to have had a lot of hits in the sixties that people still want to hear today. We’re very lucky!” The 2018 World Tour for the band includes a comprehensive UK and European tour before they head down-under for the 6 O’Clock Hop!

COLETTE Keira Knightley stars as the eponymous French novelist, whose provocative debut — falsely credited to her husband — becomes the toast of Paris, triggering a battle for identity, equality, and self-determination at the dawn of the feminist age. Colette (played with sumptuous feistiness by Knightley, Atonement 2007) arrives from the countryside as a young bride to Henry Gauthier-Villars, known as Willy (Dominic West, The Affair) —an older, notorious literary entrepreneur—and she is immediately swept into flamboyant, libertine society. At Willy’s prompt, she takes pen to paper and invents the loosely autobiographical Claudine novels, which take Paris by storm. The character Claudine becomes a veritable pop-culture icon, but Colette does not, since Willy takes authorial credit. To reclaim her literary voice, Colette must set out for new adventures, sans Willy. One of France’s most important and ground-breaking twentiethcentury writers, Colette’s dozens of volumes of provocative fiction, memoirs and journalism jubilantly bucked the societal constraints that were placed on women. Writer/director Wash Westmoreland’s (Still Alice 2014) mesmerising film tells the story of this iridescent artist’s creative awakening in turn-of-thecentury Paris—a place as dynamic and modern as she was.

THE MERGER In the tradition of The Castle and Ali’s Wedding, one of Australia’s most popular comedians, Damian Callinan adapts his entertaining and topical stage play, The Merger for the big screen! Bodgy Creek is a struggling town. The drought won’t let up, jobs are scarce after the mill was shut down, and the footy team looks like it will have to merge with another club or fold. Living a hermit-like existence on the town’s fringe, former football star turned ‘Town Killer’ Troy Carrington (Damian Callinan), is coaxed into rescuing the team after striking up an unlikely friendship with young Neil (Raffety Grierson) who is struggling with the recent loss of his father. Teaming up with Neil’s mum Angie (Kate Mulvany, The Great Gatsby) who runs a nearby refugee support centre, they unite to recruit the new arrivals to save the team and take the community on a journey of change. But for some, like Neil’s grandfather and Club President, Bull (fan-favourite, John Howard, SeaChange) and ‘star’ player Carpet Burn (Angus McLaren, Hotel Mumbai), it’s more change than they’re willing to take.

SPARTACUS

PowerPAC is a half-day workshop accompanied by a practical guide that addresses the desire (and need) within communities to be more connected, build practical skills and share, nurture and create resources to deliver greater value to community.

Queensland Performing Arts Centre presents a live simulcast by the Bolshoi Ballet of Spartacus. Performing alongside the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

PAC AUSTRALIA

BOLSHOI BALLET

Guest speakers Annette Carmichael and Rick Heath will deliver insight into developing engaging community-based cultural projects. Delegates will have the opportunity to brainstorm ideas for projects and build new professional relationships with peers from the local region.

Moscow’s mighty Bolshoi Ballet returns to Australia with their grandiose epic Spartacus, recounting the story of a Roman slave’s fight for freedom. In ancient Rome, Spartacus, a Thracian soldier, is turned captive by Crassus with his wife Phrygia. Forced to fight as a gladiator and kill one of his friends, Spartacus plots an unprecedented upheaval…

The workshop is a community gathering of local government representatives, creative venues, local artists, producers, event organisers, teachers and members of the local community that share a vested interest in building a culturally rich community. It’s about sharing resources and ideas, and coming together to discover how everyone’s interests can be better served. Ultimately, it’s about maximising liveability and wellbeing in your community.

Since its first performance in the Bolshoi Theatre some 60 years ago, Spartacus remains the ultimate balletic tour de force and like the Bolshoi Ballet company itself, is dynamic, big and explosive. This is a FREE live simulcast of the performance at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Seating is allocated and bookings are essential.

TULLY

LITTLE FOREST

Charlize Theron is dynamite as Marlo, a mother struggling to deal with two toddlers and a newborn. When Marlo’s brother gifts her a nanny named Tully, her life suddenly changes. Tully is young, radiant and energetic, helping with demands of motherhood. But what happens when Tully has to move on?

No job, bad romance and terrible grades… Nothing goes smoothly in young Hye-won’s life in the big city.

This biting dark comedy on the tribulations of young motherhood comes from the prescient pen of Diablo Cody, the genius behind Juno, Young Adult and the United States of Tara. With a radiant performance from Mackenzie Davis as Tully, and electric direction from Jason Reitman, this is a quietly radical and thoroughly modern feminist take on life as a new mother in the 21st century.

She puts her unsolved matters behind and impulsively returns to her country hometown, to the house where her mother left her when she was 18. There she reunites with her childhood friends Jae-ha and Eun-sook who are living rural lives in their own ways. Hyewon’s days are filled with simple but peaceful moments as she prepares meals with her organic ingredients. Throughout four seasons Hye-won slowly finds the real pleasure in living the simple life, and realizes the genuine reason that led her back to her homeland. Presented by Cinema-K Outreach.

PADDINGTON 2 LA DOLCE VITA A morning of free family fun. Themed activities in Buss Park followed by a family friendly film screening. Programmed to be inclusive to all members of the community and accessible to all abilities. The much-anticipated sequel to the worldwide hit family film finds Paddington happily settled with the Brown family in Windsor Gardens, where he has become a popular member of the community, spreading joy and marmalade wherever he goes. While searching for the perfect present for his beloved Aunt Lucy’s hundredth birthday, Paddington spots a unique pop-up book in Mr. Gruber’s antique shop and embarks upon a series of odd jobs to buy it. But when the book is stolen, it’s up to Paddington and the Browns to unmask the thief.

Winner of the Palme D’Or at Cannes and setting the standard for world cinema in 1960, Italian maestro Federico Fellini (La Strada, 8 1/2) dramatically opened the eyes of cinema goers and critics alike with this searing critique of a celebrity-obsessed, hedonistic world as seen through the eyes of a fluff-peddling journalist. Marcello Rubini (Marcello Mastroianni) is a gossip columnist and would-be novelist who chronicles “the sweet life’ of fading aristocrats, second-rate movie stars and aging playboys in high society Rome in the 50s. Armed with his “paparazzi”, the philandering Marcello ultimately succumbs to loneliness and tragedy as he flees his obsessive, suicidal fiancée while vainly vying for the affections of a vivacious screen goddess (Anita Ekberg). Showcasing the sexy and truly audacious romp in the famed Trevi Fountain in glistening high definition black and white, as well as including a treasure trove of special features, La Dolce Vita remains a milestone of European cinema.

OCEANS 8

Celebrate Queensland Seniors Week 2019 at the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre. This event is funded by the Queensland Government and supported by COTA Queensland.

Five years, eight months, 12 days...and counting. That’s how long Debbie Ocean has been devising the biggest heist of her life.

QUEENSLAND SENIORS WEEK

‘Lady’ Sandra Abbott finds the courage to reinvent herself after she flees a broken marriage to stay with her bohemian sister in London.

She knows what it’s going to take—a team of the best in their field, starting with her partnerin-crime Lou Miller. Together, they recruit a crew of specialists: jeweler Amita; street con Constance; expert fence Tammy; hacker Nine Ball; and fashion designer Rose.

Featuring an acclaimed British cast led by Imelda Staunton, Celia Imrie, Timothy Spall and Joanna Lumley, Finding Your Feet is a hilarious and heartwarming comedy proving it’s never too late to start again.

The target is a cool $150 million dollars in diamonds - diamonds that will be around the neck of world-famous actress Daphne Kluger, who will be centerstage at the event of the year, the Met Gala.

Let’s come together Queensland! During Seniors Week, 17-25 August 2019, people of all ages and backgrounds will come together and celebrate.
