#FOURTY THREE WELCOME TO

Hello Future – Here We Are

What does it take to stay ahead in a world that’s moving at breathtaking speed? Innovation that inspires something new or traditional design that stands the test of time? The right answer: both! This balance runs like a common thread through the latest issue #43 of SPECTR Magazine.

The eyewear world is undergoing a technological revolution.

3D printing is opening up new perspectives, not only for customized design but also for more sustainable production. The quality of the frames – from tactile feel to transparency to intricate precision – is reaching an impressive level. For forward-thinking opticians, this technology presents an entirely new role: they themselves become creators, able to produce tailor-made eyewear for their customers directly in-store (see the GENERA supplement).

Artificial intelligence is also changing the game. It optimizes fit, creates unique silhouettes, and elevates the design process to a new level. A prime example of this: the fascinating YOU MAWO »AI TWO«, our Editor’s Choice (p. 162).

And the next gamechanger? Digital glasses, like those being developed by EVEN REALITIES (p. 158). Whether it’s simultaneous translation, navigation, or a teleprompter – these high-tech glasses turn connectivity into an experience and showcase how the boundaries between reality and technology are dissolving.

But as forward-looking as technology may be, one thing remains unchanged: timeless design principles. Glasses that thrilled us yesterday continue to do so today; and will still do so tomorrow. Trends are more about subtle shifts – modern color concepts, innovative materials, and sophisticated craftsmanship. Our 18-page trend special offers a glimpse into the highlights of the coming year (p. 72).

In this issue of SPECTR, our frames have racked up plenty of air miles. With photoshoots in New York, Ibiza, London, Barcelona, Cape Town, Berlin, and Albania, we do justice to SPECTR’s international ambitions and the many premium eyewear labels featured in our magazine.

Enjoy discovering it all!

MATSUDA

In the world of eyewear, few brands blend artistry and innovation as seamlessly as MATSUDA. Rooted in a tradition of Japanese craftsmanship and inspired by diverse influences – ranging from Gothic architecture to whimsical designs of art nouveau – MATSUDA has been redefining eyewear ever since Mitsuhiro Matsuda’s high end clothing brand Nicole, which was launched in 1967, featured its first eyewear line in 1989. It marked history as the first eyewear line ever launched by a fashion pioneer. The brand has always stood out for its groundbreaking vision, uniting heritage with forward-thinking design.

This enduring legacy finds a new expression in the Rimless Collection, a stunning showcase of MATSUDA’s mastery of timeless design, meticulous craftsmanship, and unparalleled luxury. Captured through the lens of SPECTR photographer Stefan Kapfer, the collection embodies MATSUDA’s ethos of “Old World Technique, New World Expression,” delivering a fusion of vintage themes with innovative technologies and of heritage artistry and modern sophistication.

A colorful palette of finishes, including 22K gold and palladium, highlights the individuality of each piece while maintaining the understated luxury MATSUDA is known for.

MATSUDA »M5002«

Produced by long-time artisans in MATSUDA’s own workshop in the historic town of Sabae, Japan – a hub of eyewear excellence –the Rimless Collection reflects the brand’s dedication to quality over mass production. Each and every frame undergoes a painstaking manufacturing process involving over 250 individual steps, with a focus on precision and artistry. This commitment to craftsmanship extends to the smallest details, entrusted to master engravers in Fukui, Japan, where time-honored techniques are preserved in every design.

The Rimless Collection is not just eyewear; it is a celebration of MATSUDA’s tradition of blending fashion and art, creating pieces that resonate with those who seek sophistication and individuality and a simultaneously subtle and intentional look. 2025 SUMMER VIBES

Ibiza might just be the only metropolis in the world that isn’t really a metropolis. With fewer residents than many provincial towns, the island still manages to set global trends. Exclusive beach clubs, world-famous DJs, and minimalist modern architecture come together to create a one-of-a-kind lifestyle.

Photographer Sacha Tassilo Höchstetter and his team captured this very essence while showcasing the top sunglasses for the 2025 season. The shoot reflects the spirit of the island: night merges into day, beach style transforms into boho-chic, and the mantra is clear: “it’s all about style.” Whether born on the island, a long-time resident, or a weekend clubgoer, everyone shares an innate sense of fashion and individuality.

When it comes to sunglasses, compromises don’t exist on Ibiza. Here, sunglasses are more than just an accessory – they’re a statement, 24/7, no matter the setting. Whether enjoying an aperitif at Playa de ses Figueretes or a sundowner in Dalt Vila, the collection curated for this shoot is as diverse as the island itself. From playful styles like ITALIA INDEPENDENT for the younger party crowd to luxurious designs from MAYBACH EYEWEAR for those who prefer relaxing on their private yacht in the marina, Ibiza celebrates eyewear as an integral part of its unique style.

DESIGN TALK

CARMELO DI TERMINI

12 Questions To Answer

Carmelo has been an independent eyewear designer for 15 years and is the creative force behind the independent label RAYDIANT. We invited the Cologne-based visionary to our studio for a design talk.

Hello Carmelo, since when have you been designing eyewear?

I’ve had the privilege of calling myself an eyewear designer since 2009.

What are the unique challenges of eyewear design compared to designing other products?

Unlike many other products, eyewear is worn daily – essentially 24/7 – and is highly visible. It’s not only a design object that reflects personality but also something that must be practical.

What excites you most about your profession?

I’m fascinated by the opportunity to accompany people through my designs, giving them a sense of individuality and style. I’m also captivated by the combination of creativity and precision – it’s an art to create something aesthetic that is also functional.

Which brands have you designed for?

I’ve had the opportunity to design for numerous independent labels. However, my time with PRADA Eyewear in Milan remains the highlight: working without creative constraints and with almost limitless resources is a dream for any designer.

What defines great eyewear design?

Great eyewear design combines aesthetics, comfort, and function. It should make a visual impact while offering outstanding comfort. It should be timeless and unique, while also enhancing the individuality of the wearer.

How has the profession of eyewear designer evolved over the years?

New technologies like 3D printing and computer-aided design have vastly expanded the possibilities for creating complex and unique designs. Sustainability has also become more important, with designers increasingly using eco-friendly materials and resource-efficient production methods.

Would you say the job has become easier or more challenging?

In some ways, it has become easier, as modern technologies like 3D design software and advanced manufacturing methods provide substantial support. At the same time, expectations for creativity and individuality have risen significantly. Yesterday’s concepts just won’t cut it anymore.

Which of these modern technical tools do you use to create new designs?

I rely heavily on 3D modeling software to develop complex shapes and visualize prototypes with precision before production. Thanks to 3D printing, I can quickly create experimental prototypes, efficiently testing new ideas before moving them into full production.

What role does artificial intelligence play in eyewear design? Can AI also create designs?

AI can create designs, but it serves more as a supportive tool – it helps accelerate creative processes and generate unconventional ideas, which a human designer then evaluates and refines.

For the past five years, you’ve also had your own label – RAYDIANT. What sets the brand apart? Is there a specific design DNA?

What makes RAYDIANT unique is the added value we bring through magnetic clips designed for every model in every color. This allows each pair of glasses to transform into premium sunglasses or a wellness accessory.

Why does RAYDIANT exclusively produce 3D-printed eyewear?

3D printing enables us to produce eyewear with precision, sustainability, and no material waste – it’s a crucial step toward environmentally friendly design. It also allows us to create highly individualized designs and custom-fit frames that would be difficult to achieve with traditional methods.

What do you see as the biggest challenge for the future?

The greatest challenge ahead remains: How can we reduce waste in production while simultaneously enhancing quality and diversity? I believe this will be possible by combining innovative production methods with proven expertise. The first steps have been taken, but I can’t reveal too much yet – just stay tuned; it’s going to be disruptive!

Thank you.

Aglaja Brix & Florian Maas have dedicated their SPECTR collection shoot to the minimalist perfection of LUNOR. At the center are the latest iterations of the A11 and M16 lines, epitomizing timeless elegance and masterful craftsmanship. Once again, the premium eyewear manufacturer from the Black Forest asserts its mastery of restraint, creating designs that are bold statements for purists.

The M16 line is crafted for a style-conscious generation seeking eyewear of understated elegance and superior materials. Each M16 is a small masterpiece of stainless steel, meticulously handcrafted and finished with a matte coating. Colors such as Misty Rose, Sun Drift, and Evening Glow, with their gentle gradients, emphasize the soft sophistication of these models and appeal particularly to a younger audience. The unisex model »452« offers exceptional comfort and makes a sophisticated statement for both men and women. Its new colors – Black Forest Green, Vintage Blue, and Vintage Grey, each with subtle gradients –evoke nostalgia while maintaining a contemporary edge. The Black Forest Green, in particular, recalls the mystical early mornings of the Black Forest.

CHRONICLES

OPTICAL HIGHLIGHTS SHOT IN SOUTH AFRICA

It’s no coincidence that Cape Town draws photographers, models, and creatives from around the world year after year. During Europe’s colder months, the city at the Cape of Good Hope offers some undeniable advantages: sun, warmth, and long daylight hours. Add to that a top-tier infrastructure for photo and film productions, and it’s clear why Cape Town reigns as the most coveted model location in the Southern Hemisphere.

But it’s not just the hard facts that win people over. Cape Town pulses with creative energy, cultural richness, and breathtaking natural beauty. From the iconic Table Mountain and the vibrant Bo-Kaap district to the beaches of Camp’s Bay, the Lion’s Head summit, and the picturesque vineyards of Stellenbosch — welcome to a photographer’s paradise. While Europe shivers, photographer Ulrich Hartmann and his team head south to the “Pearl of the Cape” to wrap up SPECTR’s final production of the year, just in time for the

January issue. This time, it’s not the beach at Llandudno calling. Instead, the team stays close to the heart of the city, capturing the latest eyewear collections against the lively backdrop of Long Street.

On set: premier frames from BLACKFIN, DAVIDOFF, HOFFMANN NATURAL EYEWEAR, LOOK, LOOL, LUNOR, METROPOLITAN, and SALT. Hopefully, neither the team nor the eyewear get too comfortable in South Africa — they’ve got a flight home to catch.

EINSTOFFEN Above The Earth

With the Sopraterra collection, Swiss brand EINSTOFFEN launches a line featuring finely crafted millings and premium eyewear chains. The stylish design and intricate details of the Sopraterra collection are perfectly showcased in the SPECTR cover shoot by Berlin-based photographer Lotte Thor and her team. Co-founder Ramon Studer shares the story behind the collection’s name and EINSTOFFEN’s meticulously crafted frames.

EINSTOFFEN

»Ringer«

EINSTOFFEN »Haute Couturier«

Hello Ramon, you sent us your new Sopraterra collection for the cover shoot. What’s behind the name?

We wanted to create a design inspired by flowers and botany – something that captures and highlights natural structures and colors. That was our starting point. Then one Friday evening, Raphi and I were sitting in a restaurant, and there was this flyer on the table for a band called “Sopraterra”. We spontaneously went to their concert, and afterward, it was clear that this would be the name for the new collection.

Unusual. What do you associate with the name?

Sopraterra means “a view above the earth” to us. Our association with the name is best described in the words from our collection text:

“We look upward, into the sky, into infinity. Our eyes, framed by our glasses, are the windows to our soul. Like flowers blooming toward the sun, we also reach for the light. Sopraterra, a name that evokes the beauty and fragility of existence, stands as a testament to the human desire to see, understand, and dream.”

How does this theme reflect in the collection?

The heart of our new collection lies in the innovative millings. Inspired by the mesmerizing world of flowers, we translated their structures into stunning eyewear designs. We began experimenting with these unique milling techniques in early 2023 to bring them to life.

How are you translating floral designs into your 2025 collection?

We take inspiration from the intricate lines and curves of flowers. We digitize these elements and adapt them to our designs before precisely milling them into the frames. The result is a unique interpretation of natural patterns.

»Voyante«

What are the biggest challenges in this process?

Creating our frames involves a multi-stage process. After fine polishing, the frames undergo a second manual micro-milling process, where each frame is precisely adjusted, and the milling machine is recalibrated to achieve maximum accuracy. To perfect the designs, we sometimes add laser engravings, which are then polished again for a flawless finish.

The results certainly speak for themselves. Another standout feature is the eyewear chains. What does this accessory mean to you?

Our eyewear chains are a natural extension of the collection. Using the same premium acetate as our frames and incorporating real stones creates a cohesive and harmonious look. These chains are not just functional accessories but also highlight the attention to detail that defines our eyewear.

How many glasses are in the Sopraterra collection?

The Sopraterra collection includes 22 optical frames and 22 sunglasses, each available in 3 to 5 colors. As a special highlight, we’re also launching a new sunglasses line from the Essentials collection at opti: titanium-acetate perfection.

Are there any particularly intricate limited editions?

Yes, the models »Haute Couturier« and »Voyante« are both milled and laserengraved. Each model is limited to 200 pieces.

The designs seem to cater primarily to a female audience, right?

A large part of our collection is unisex, appealing to both women and men. While the women’s models often feature playful and bold millings, the men’s models tend to stand out with their understated and elegant lines.

With Sopraterra, you’re very avantgarde, but surely there will also be another basic collection, right?

The Basic collection is the heart of our lineup. Even as we push boundaries with Sopraterra, our classic models remain a cornerstone of our identity. They embody timeless elegance and premium craftsmanship. Of course, we don’t compromise on the love for small details that make an EINSTOFFEN frame unique. For us, basic never means standard or boring. einstoffen.com

MOREL PAR JEAN NOUVEL

Bridging Architecture and Eyewear Design

The collaboration between French eyewear brand MOREL and renowned architect Jean Nouvel unites two seemingly distant disciplines. Architecture meets eyewear in a project that redefines design conventions. Known for iconic works like the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, Nouvel applies his mastery of materiality and form to create a collection that is minimalist yet expressive. At the core of this partnership is Nouvel’s concept of elementarity. As he puts it, “The ambition to play on the material, on the absence of form, demands such precision that the slightest fault is unforgivable.” This meticulous ethos defines every detail of the collection, which centers on two shapes – round and panto –accented by bold, straight lines that extend beyond the face, creating a structured and modern silhouette.

The collaboration is equally groundbreaking in its use of materials. MOREL and Nouvel combine lightweight titanium with delicate acetate. Titanium offers durability and sleekness, while colored acetate adds vibrancy. Translucent acetate evokes crystalline glass, while matte finishes channel the timeless solidity of granite – materials Nouvel frequently employs in his architecture.

Reflecting the precision of Nouvel’s buildings, the eyewear harmonizes form and function, blending aesthetics with practicality. Straight, understated nose bridges and slim arms highlight structural balance, while acetate versions bring boldness with transparent finishes and embedded silk patterns.

This collaboration is more than a collection; it is a manifesto for modern design. By merging Nouvel’s architectural vision with MOREL’s eyewear expertise, the result is a unique product that invites wearers to see the world through the lens of an architect. morel-france.com

FITTING FEMALE STYLES FOR OVERSIZE FASHION

Power suits are making a comeback – from the runways of fashion capitals to the streets of urban centers. Oversized is the new standard, a fashionable generosity that embodies power and style in a confident union. Who better to bring this renaissance to life than Düsseldorf-based fashion and beauty photographer Estelle Klawitter? As a longtime SPECTR contributor, she captures the perfect balance between ease and authority in the power suit look. The models styled by Estelle demonstrate that composure and conviction are the keys to a commanding appearance – proving that these silhouettes effortlessly combine elegance and professionalism.

But what eyewear complements these striking outfits? The frames need to accentuate the power of the look without overpowering it. Our curated selection combines designs with that certain something that harmonize perfectly with the generous cuts without overshadowing the styling. Brands like CAZAL, EINSTOFFEN, HOFFMANN NATURAL EYEWEAR, KALEOS, LITHE, MARKUS T, MASUNAGA and REIZ offer designs that complement the oversized trend in a unique way. The result is bold, unconventional looks that combine oversized fashion with character-driven eyewear in unique styles.

As the successor to the »AI ONE«, the »AI TWO« also leverages artificial intelligence in the design process, reinterpreting traditional eyewear design with a futuristic twist. In doing so, the »AI TWO« seamlessly integrates into YOU MAWO’s design philosophy: individuality and innovation – the two pillars on which the German premium label elevates its concept of bespoke eyewear to an entirely new level.

In the »AI TWO«, a specially developed algorithm creates an organically flowing wave structure, captures it in a 3D cross-section, and shapes it into the unique temple arms of the »AI TWO«. Combined with cutting-edge 3D printing technology, this ensures that each piece is not only unique in form but also in its creation story. Every model tells its own tale, reflecting the perfect integration of nature’s unpredictability with the precision of technological innovation.

The core design of the »AI TWO« is a masterful blend of futuristic appeal and classic restraint. Made from polyamide, the frame impresses with its robustness and flexibility, while also offering extraordinary lightness for its volume. The highlight: Despite its minimalist design language, the »AI TWO« manages to make a bold statement –a balancing act executed with remarkable precision.

MASUNAGA SINCE 1905

Less is more – highlights from the MASUNAGA since 1905 collection combine classic and modern elements and impress with pure aesthetics.

Japanese Design And Craftsmanship At Its Best

MASUNAGA VISIONARY ZEN

MASUNAGA is undoubtedly one of the top eyewear brands from the Land of the Rising Sun. With a 120-year legacy, this Japanese luxury manufacturer has played a defining role in shaping both Japanese eyewear design and craftsmanship. Its global appeal is no secret to Hans Zwijsen and Magali Somers, long-time partners of MASUNAGA, who distribute the iconic Japanese label across half of Europe.

portrait : MASUNAGA
life : RAPHAEL SCHMITZ

Hans Zwijsen and Magali Somers have internalized the spirit of the Japanese premium brand for many years.

Hello Hans and Magali, what is your personal relationship with MASUNAGA? When did this Japanese brand enter your life?

Hans: We’ve known MASUNAGA as a brand for a very long time, but the personal connection started in 2016. We were asked to take over the distribution for the BeLux region and within a year we expanded to the Netherlands, followed by France, the French overseas territories, the UK, Germany and Portugal. We also work with some opticians in Africa. What fascinates you about the brand?

Magali: We love the quality and serenity

of the Japanese approach, especially their philosophy of “never compromising on quality”. MASUNAGA avoids following fleeting trends and instead focuses on outstanding craftsmanship. Their unique approach and perspective continues to surprise us and ground us in a more mindful way of looking at what really matters.

MASUNAGA has a long history – how has the brand developed since its foundation in 1905?

Magali: MASUNAGA is unique in that respect. It is remarkably consistent and remains one of the few producers to manage the entire manufacturing process in its own factory. This independence allows MASUNAGA to explore new avenues and innovative production techniques. While the collection continues to grow and the brand has established collaborations with other well-known names, MASUNAGA remains deeply committed to its own DNA and unique approach to frame production.

What else makes MASUNAGA unique as a brand compared to other premium eyewear manufacturers?

Hans: Their consistency and dedication to always strive for perfection and never settle for less. Although MASUNAGA does not focus on the latest trends and hypes, its main objective is to continue to be a constant and trusted partner in the

shops. They do this by reinventing the typical classic shapes that never go out of fashion. Looking at the collection, the attention to detail and high quality finish is impressive. And while they may make the most amazing frames in the world, they remain modest at all times. All of which makes them one of the most amazing brands in the world.

So MASUNAGA is a typical Japanese brand, isn’t it?

Hans: MASUNAGA holds fast to its core values; its DNA. With over 100 years of history, the brand is a testament to quality and longevity. This is not a company that comes and goes with fleeting trends. Instead, MASUNAGA remains focused on what really matters: quality, consistency, reliability and the assurance of knowing exactly what you are buying. These values will never change. It brings what is important in life. Not the fast-moving products without soul and care.

Is there a general design DNA?

Magali: If you look at the collection, there is a clear theme. The materials used are always titanium, Japanese acetate or a combination of the two. Although their design may be perceived as classic, their use of materials and techniques is often innovative, resulting in amazing results. MASUNAGA follows its own path, not copying others but being copied, which in itself is a huge compliment. Although they

often reinvent typical shapes, the details and designs are influenced by various factors, including architecture, their heritage and external inspirations. In addition to design, craftsmanship is often perceived as an elementary attribute of MASUNAGA, correct?

Hans: All MASUNAGA frames are made of titanium in 4 different alloys (depending on the frame) to achieve both flexibility and stability. No exceptions. Forging, bending, welding and coloring are all done in-house. The acetate is also processed in-house, from milling to polishing to hinge assembly. While this may be time consuming, quality control is closely monitored at every stage. This hands-

on approach makes MASUNAGA truly unique in the fast-paced world of frame manufacturing. It is incredibly challenging to maintain and improve the level of expertise required to elevate a brand to the standards of MASUNAGA

Since craftsmanship plays a major role for MASUNAGA, why don't you tell us a little more about it.

Hans: Craft is a way of life. You cling to it and admire it. We all know that craftsmanship brings quality. It all starts with knowledge, and that knowledge is the key factor. You pass it on, but it takes time to master the details. Making frames is not that difficult, but making them to the highest possible quality is another challenge.

Craftsmanship is about appreciating the details, no matter how small. Finding and training dedicated workers is an ongoing process and part of the family legacy. It is about values and consistency. When you visit the factory, you understand these values. Quality before quantity, always. Would you like to know a fascinating historical fact about how MASUNAGA established its tradition of craftsmanship? With a history dating back to 1905, the company was the driving force behind the development of the optical industry in Fukui. The company’s founder, Gozaemon Masunaga, brought in skilled craftsmen from Osaka and Tokyo with the goal of establishing the optical industry in Fukui. He entered the industry the hard way, and at first the eyeglasses produced in Fukui were considered third-rate in the world. In order to raise the quality of the products, Gozaemon established a guild-like system in which full-fledged craftsmen could set up their own businesses. Thanks to this system, the number of eyeglass craftsmen gradually increased, and the optical industry spread throughout Fukui.

Today, MASUNAGA OPTICAL is one of Japan’s largest, most authentic and leading eyewear manufacturers.

MASUNAGA’s craftsmanship is highly regarded worldwide and is widely known for its traditional expertise. A number of international eyewear brands trust MASUNAGA OPTICAL to manufacture their high-end eyewear.

Nevertheless, the Japanese premium brand also values modern designs. How does MASUNAGA manage this balance?

Magali: The balance is a fine line –surprising the public, especially the end consumer. MASUNAGA seeks to explore new directions while remaining true to its core values. Modern designs focus on techniques rather than completely new models that do not fit in with the brand’s classic approach. The competition is fierce, but MASUNAGA remains a strong player. When you stick to your values you will last.

Are there special products for the European market?

MASUNAGA K ≡ »Begonia«
»Misago«

Hans: All frames are for the global market, but the performance is different. For the Asian market, the noses are designed differently to better fit the ethnic demand. This fit can also be ordered for the European market. In addition, longer or shorter temples can be made upon special request.

What are the highlights of the MASUNAGA since 1905 collection?

Magali: The extensive variety of over 500 SKUs caters to diverse customer preferences, tailored to different shops and countries. A standout piece from the latest collection is the »GMS-128T«, an all-metal panto-shaped frame. Its bridge showcases a distinctive pressed milgrain pattern, split elegantly by the rim, while the temples feature a smooth finish with intricate details reminiscent of a fountain pen. This harmonious blend of classic and modern elements makes the frame truly captivating.

Another bestseller in the collection is »ADAGIO«, part of the same series as the popular »TONA« model. It highlights a sharp, refined design that showcases expert craftsmanship through the striking contrast of matte and shiny finishes. A sophisticated, masculine frame with undeniable appeal.

What makes these models so successful?

Magali: Opticians immediately appreciate the approach: something different, yet

classic. The quality is obvious and makes a bold impression. When opticians and consumers handle a MASUNAGA frame, they can’t help but smile. The “wow” effect is real, and the sparkle in their eyes makes us proud to be part of the MASUNAGA family. Exceptional quality combined with heartfelt storytelling is what makes MASUNAGA so successful.

In 2014, you launched a collection in collaboration with Kenzo Takada for the first time: MASUNAGA│K ≡. What is special about this collection?

Magali: The main difference is in the detailing, which is more pronounced. MASUNAGA since 1905 has more refined details, while MASUNAGA | K≡ is more extravagant, bold and daring. Is there a particular design or material language in this collection?

Hans: MASUNAGA | K≡ is always made of titanium and/or acetate. MASUNAGA since 1905 expresses the spirit of “less is more”. The MASUNAGA | K≡ collection is bolder, with more details that give it a richer appearance from the outside. The new hexagonal embellishment on the back of the front is both decorative and functional. The redesigned temples are inspired by a lorgnette handle popular in the 19th century. The K≡ logo completes the frame at the end of the temples. What are your current favorites in the K ≡ collection?

Hans: Undoubtedly the »TAKA« and the

»AOI«. The »TAKA« was sold out at first sight and in great demand. The »AOI« was a surprise, but so well received. A daring design with such high elegance. Our bestseller is definitely the »AQUILA« with its sophisticated look, created by combining delicate and beautiful metal parts with uniquely cut acetate parts, variously polished or matted. The highlights of the latest collection are »MISAGO« and »BEGONIA«. »MISAGO« is a larger version of the popular metal series »TAKA«. The double front rim design creates a solid feel and the grand silhouette captures men’s hearts. »BEGONIA« is in soft panto shape. The ensemble of metal parts with beautiful arabesque pattern and shiny acetate gives the frame graceful impression. This is the same series as the popular model »LANTANA«, released in the 2024 spring/summer collection. What can we expect from MASUNAGA in the coming years?

Hans: To be honest... it’s a continuation of what’s already in motion. A new line has been unveiled at Silmo in great secrecy, made exclusively for MASUNAGA enthusiasts – for those shops whose hearts race at the sight of these frames. There’s more to come, although even we, as part of the family, are in the dark about what’s next. The best secrets are the ones that remain untold. However, Magali and I are constantly amazed by the new models being introduced at opti, Mido and Silmo masunaga1905.com

Elaborate, bold details and the highest quality workmanship give the MASUNAGA | K≡ collection an extravagant look.

BETWEEN STATEMENT AND RESTRAINT – OPTICAL EYEWEAR FOR THE

MODERN WOMAN

Optical eyewear designs for women often walk a fine line: on the one hand, they need to be practical for everyday use, yet on the other, they must radiate fashion-forward appeal. The challenge? Designs that neither feel overwhelming nor fall into monotony. Ideally, restraint and bold statements come together in a harmonious balance – and that’s exactly what the models featured in “Specs And The City” by Tanja Tremel achieve.

For this shoot by the Berlin-based fashion photographer, we selected frames that seamlessly integrate into a professional setting without losing their edge. From minimalist designs in delicate hues to bold shapes that subtly convey personality – each frame in this selection is a stylish upgrade for the fashion-conscious woman. Perfect for meetings, after-work drinks, and everything in between.

To celebrate the diversity of modern femininity, we’ve intentionally curated designs from a variety of genres. YOU MAWO and lool impress with harmonious hexagonal shapes, while EINSTOFFEN and LUNOR add pops of color with their vibrant acetate frames. The delicate metal designs by OWP and KOBERG captivate with understated accents, and the cat-eye interpretations by MODO and ETNIA BARCELONA bring a touch of feminine extravagance. This shoot proves: Optical eyewear for women is far more than a functional accessory – when chosen with care, it enhances the wearer’s style and personality with effortless elegance.

CITY OPTIK STOCKHOLM

From Heritage to Modern Visionary

In this exclusive interview, we sit down with Asa, co-owner of City Optik, a Stockholm-based institution that has been serving custo mers since 1938. Asa shares the story behind City Optik’s enduring success, its unique approach to customer service, and what makes their store a standout destination for both locals and international visitors. From their philosophy of “heart and skills” to their curated selection of frames and innovative store design, City Optik reflects a deep commitment to quality and authenticity in every aspect of their business.

Hello Asa, City Optik is an institution in Stockholm. How long have you been around?

The store at this location has been running an optical business since 1938. In 2003, my three colleagues and I became the owners of City Optik

What is your personal background? How did you get into optics?

Like many in this business, it all started with poor vision. I became nearsighted at twelve, and every time I visited my local optician, I thought the store was a nice place and being an optometrist seemed like a fun job.

Stockholm is also a tourist metropolis. How does that affect your clientele?

It’s exciting to be located on Drottninggatan, a busy pedestrian street in the heart of Stockholm. There’s always something happening outside our windows – so many people in different styles from different countries, with lots of happy faces. Many of them take pictures of our store. My colleague Maria is an expert at crea-

ting window displays, and she’s really a leader in window design in the Swedish optical business.

We get a lot of international customers who love our selection of frames, including the best from Swedish designers like Oscar Magnuson. We haven’t really asked whether they find us by chance or check us out online beforehand, but once they’ve been here, they tend to come back.

What is special about working with foreign customers?

In a way, it helps us see our selection with fresh eyes. What’s familiar to us is often new to them. Many are delighted to have an optometrist exam in-store without needing an eye doctor. Since we have a lot of international visitors, we keep a large range of single-vision lenses in stock, and we can prepare glasses within hours. For progressive lenses, they usually buy the frame and get the lenses fitted at their local optician.

How would you describe the philosophy of City Optik? Heart and skill. We do everything with heart and are extremely focused on delivering quality – quality with heart. We often say we

build our business around a cup of coffee, a cake, and a pleasant conversation. We love people. And even more, we love people with gorgeous glasses on!

You have a great store interior. When did you set it up like this?

We redesigned the store in 2017. What criteria did you use to design your store?

We focused on creating a place where customers would genuinely enjoy being – cozy and beautiful. We also wanted to try new ways of displaying frames. Previously, we had all the frames on the walls, but now most are on shelves.

Do you feel that the store’s interior design positively influences your customers?

Absolutely! There are so many things to talk about besides the frames. For example, the glasses holders on the wall are made of corks. We hoped to drink enough champagne to use champagne corks, but we didn’t manage it for the entire store, so we had to mix in ordinary wine corks too. The mirrors are designed like the front of a frame on one wall and like a monocle on the other. How would you define your brand portfolio? What criteria do you use to select your partners?

We look for frames with a lovely design and an interesting story. Eco-friendliness is the second key factor.

What is particularly important to you when including a brand in your assortment?

It has to feel right in our hearts. We look for something we’re missing – a line that fills a gap, like more feminine frames, bold black designs, or something from a country we’re curious about.

What exciting trends are you currently observing in the industry? Which shapes, colors, and materials are popular?

This autumn, there’s high demand for bold, straight lines in plastic for both men and women. Crystal-clear frames are also popular, with customers referencing the Netflix series The Perfect Couple Although we expected small, 90s-style frames to make a comeback this year, large, 70s and 80s-inspired glasses are still in demand. Cat-eye shapes are also emerging, along with tinted lenses in medium grades, which are quite popular.

What is particularly Swedish about City Optik’s offerings compared to Central or Southern Europe?

In Stockholm, we don’t see bright colors. Black and natural shades dominate. We don’t do well with highly colorful or detailed designs. It’s all about bold, big, but classic and natural frames. What characterizes your store apart from the attractive interior and high-quality brand portfolio? What are your strengths?

We are highly educated and committed to delivering quality work from start to finish – top materials, top staff, and top equipment. Your website is also modern and successful. When did you launch it?

We’ve had a nice website for many years. The latest update was launched just a year ago. What was conceptually important to you with the website? The goal was to make it as similar as possible to the real-life store. We can also find an online store on your website. Why did you decide to offer one, and what products do you feature there?

We started with an online store to offer eye care products like wetting drops, glasses care products, and contact lenses. Selling

frames online is challenging, but we’re considering it in the future. How active are you on social media, and would you say it’s an important channel for an optician?

Yes, we’re active on all social media channels. I handle all of City Optik’s web and social media myself, and I find it fun and efficient. Right now, Instagram is our main focus, but I plan to put more energy into Pinterest and TikTok soon.

What do you do to get noticed by potential customers? We invest heavily in our window displays and are active on social media.

What keeps your customers coming back, whether online or offline?

A familiar, friendly approach.

What do you think will be important for opticians in the coming years to survive in the market? Your top three priorities, please?

The right frames, the right skills, and uniqueness.

Asa, thank you for this interview.

COSMOPOLITAN SUNGLASSES STATEMENT SPOTTED IN BARCELONA

Anyone traveling to Spain knows: stylish eyewear is a must – and not just in summer. Especially in Barcelona, where Mediterranean warmth meets urban flair, subpar eyewear would be hopelessly out of place. The Catalan capital has always drawn a style-savvy elite, enchanted by its vibrant rhythm and the unmistakable energy that pulses through the streets of Eixample, the beachside vibe of Barceloneta, and the hidden alleyways of the Gothic Quarter.

For our latest SPECTR photoshoot, Barcelona became a living backdrop. The creative team, led by stylist Davor Jelusic, staged a curated selection of sunglasses that perfectly embodythe city’s urban chic and cosmopolitan spirit.

Here, eyewear isn’t just an accessory –it’s a statement of character. The frames play with light and shadow in masterful fashion, set against a Mediterranean aesthetic and cutting-edge styling. This editorial is a tribute to the visual power of Barcelona and to a fashion sensibility that connects global citizens. Featured in the shoot are eyewear highlights from BARTON PERREIRA, CAZAL, MARC O’POLO, NIRVAN JAVAN, and SALT.

PUSH THE LIMIT

Sacha Tassilo Höchstetter

For over a decade, Sacha Tassilo Höchstetter has shaped the aesthetics of SPECTR with his unmistakable, sometimes edgy visual language. The Munich-based photographer, specializing in Nude, Beauty, Fashion & Eyewear, continuously finds innovative and exciting ways to present eyewear in entirely new contexts. For us, Sacha is a guarantee of exquisite results, and we often rely on his expertise when a production demands a unique narrative.

Sacha’s imagery evokes powerful emotions, often placing his models in surreal and dreamlike scenarios. His personal ambition is to create a vibrant and colorful visual language. “Step out of the comfort zone and push to the limit” is his mantra. Perhaps he excels at this because he spent 12 years living and working in Brazil, where he also met his idol, photographer David LaChapelle.

Sacha’s mastery of light, perspective, and composition is practically a given. His predictable quality – he leaves nothing to chance – makes him a sought-after creative for productions in the eyewear industry. For this issue, Sacha contributed two features: for

“Boho-Chic on Ibiza”, he and his team flew to the Balearic island (p. 54), and for LOOK, he created a feature in athleisure style titled “Time For Athleisure” (p. 94).

Off-duty, Sacha strikes a balance between Yin and Yang: cycling, skiing, and running in the mountains, followed by fine food and wine back in the city. sachahoechstetter.com
