Viking Cruises has expanded its Egypt fleet with a new river vessel built specifically to navigate the Nile. Inspired by the design of Viking’s longships, Viking Aton will make its maiden voyage in September 2022 on the group’s popular Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary.

Accommodating 82 guests across 41 cabins, the vessel is designed by Rottet Studio and blends Viking’s elegant Scandinavian aesthetic with Egyptian influences. Alongside river-facing staterooms and a series of suites complete with full-size rooms and verandas, there will be a pool and sun deck with 360-degree views, a lounge featuring floor-to-ceiling glass doors and a terrace for al fresco dining.

Speaking on Viking TV, Richard Riviere of Rottet Studio commented: “The ship was designed from scratch to provide an environment that is not only perfect for exploring Eygpt’s greatest river, but also to be a great hotel experience. We wanted to consider how to let the eye rest, managing the change between the bright sunlight and cool interior spaces, all while not losing sight of the incredible views.”

The 12-day itinerary begins with a three-night stay in Cairo, before guests fly to Luxor to board Viking Aton for an eight-day roundtrip offering access to sites like the tomb of Tutankhamun.

The vessel will join Viking’s existing river fleet in Egypt, which includes Viking Osiris, an identical sister ship set to launch in 2021, and Viking Ra, which debuted on the Nile in 2018.
