M/Y Njord
OCEAN RESIDENCES DEVELOPMENT
Ocean Residences Development has appointed FM Architettura and Jean-Michel Gathy as interior designers for M/Y Njord, a luxury superyacht featuring 118 private residences.
At a length of 293 metres, the vessel will be home to a discerning community who share a passion for exploration, voyage and research, creating an intimate circle united by their desire to give back to the planet and share the result of their discoveries. An impressive array of amenities include a golf centre, swimming pools, a gym, an arts and craft studio, library, business centre and theatre, as well as a professional-standard oceanographic research laboratory and a gyroscopic telescope housed in the top deck observatory. There will also be a sailing club with floating marina, an expedition and dive centre, various watercraft including submersibles and four purpose-built luxury Riva-style tenders, and space for two eightseater twin-engine helicopters.
The venture marks a new style of residence at sea, in which the facilities are on par with those of a cruise ship or luxury lifestyle resort. Six restaurants, a gourmet market and culinary studio make up the dining offer, while wellness is taken care of courtesy of a world-class medical spa facility developed in partnership with pioneering health specialist Chenot. Residences range in size from 120m2 to 800m2 with the largest featuring a total of six bedrooms. M/Y Njord will also be the world’s only residential yacht to offer duplex and triplex suites with access via private elevators.
FM Architettura and Denniston are working closely with Chief Designer Jean-Louis Stutzmann and naval architect Espen Øino; together they will custom-design every detail to a high specification. “We will design all of our furniture for this project, as with this type of yacht interior the proportions are vital, and the ratio of space to furniture must be perfect, as well

as the balance of materials and the atmosphere they create as a whole,” explains Francesca Muzio, co-founder of FM Architettura. “Each of our original designs is the result of a unique creative process that begins with exploring the client’s personality, integrating their ideas and discovering their specific passion and lifestyle.” M/Y Njord’s architecture is characterised by wide openings and vast double-height spaces, bringing a spatial quality unseen on a private superyacht. Its interiors meanwhile are stylish and elegant, with a tactile palette influenced by FM Architettura’s affinity for the four elements. “Earth to me is the use of wood in our designs, be it in the bespoke furniture, flooring or structural partitions, while air is the lightness around the interiors created by using handmade carpets and bespoke woven textiles that lead the eye around the space,” explains Muzio. “The fire comes into the accents with bespoke bronze furniture, glass or the lighting, which we use to punctuate the rooms. And lastly, water: the all-important element, to ensure the flow and balance of the design comes together in its entirety to create a sense of place.”
According to Ocean Residences Development, M/Y Njord will be a technically advanced green ship operating at the highest environmental standards, and in an industry first, all crew will have private accommodation supporting the company’s mission to attract and retain a first-class workforce.
Along with the comfort of both crew and residents, health, safety and wellbeing are paramount. “There is clearly a growing demand for a private, bespoke yachting lifestyle where residents, their families and guests can travel in a safe and healthy environment,” says Alain Gruber, COO of Ocean Residences Development. “M/Y Njord will be very appealing to those who share a sense of adventure, desire personal enrichment and life-changing experiences.
