The Sword of Damocles” Retold by James Baldwin There once was a king whose name was Dionysius. He was so unjust and cruel that he won for himself the name of a tyrant. He knew that almost everybody hated him, and so he was always in dread lest someone should take his life. But he was very rich, and he lived in a fine palace where there were many beautiful and costly things. And he was waited upon by a host of servants who were always ready to do his bidding. One day, a friend of his, whose name was Damocles, said to him, “How happy you must be! You have here everything that any man could wish.”“Perhaps you would like to change places with me,” said the tyrant.“No, not that, O king!” said Damocles. “But I think that if I could only have your riches and your pleasures for one day, I should not want any greater happiness.” “Very well,” said the tyrant. “You shall have them.” And so, the next day, Damocles was led into the palace, and all the servants were bidden to treat him as their master. He sat down at a table in the banquet hall, and rich foods were placed before him. He lacked nothing that could give him pleasure. There were costly wines, and beautiful flowers, and rare perfumes, and delightful music. He rested among soft cushions and felt that he was the happiest man in the world. Then he chanced to raise his eyes toward the ceiling. What was it dangling above him, with its point almost touching his head? It was a sharp sword, and it was hung by only a single horsehair. What if the hair should break? There was danger every moment that it would do so.
The smile faded from the lips of Damocles. His face became ashy pale. His hands trembled. He wanted no more food; he could drink no more wine; he took no more delight in the music. He longed to be out of the palace, far away; he cared not where.“What is the matter?” said the tyrant. “That sword! That sword!” cried Damocles. He was so badly frightened that he dared not move.“Yes,” said Dionysius. “I know there is a sword above your head, and it may fall at any moment. But why should that trouble you? I have a sword over my head all the time. I am every moment in dread lest something may cost me to lose my life.” Let me go,” said Damocles. “I now see that I am mistaken and that the rich and powerful are not as happy as they seem. Reflection As a language teacher and as a learner of other languages, it is necessary to think of one or two reasons why listening is important. Listening is a skill that occupies a big chunk of the time we spend communicating in the language. The times we spend listening to others, speak, or listening to songs, news, lectures, YouTube, etc. Recent advances in technology have served to raise the profile of the listening skill in language teaching. The listening provides input that can be very significant for second language acquisition in general and for the development of the speaking skill in particular. As language teachers, we need to think of how we can incorporate listening into our teaching and provide opportunities both inside and outside the classroom for our students to be exposed to significant listening input. However, this represents a challenge when we have to elaborate an evaluation in this area. This course provided us with some tools that we can use and apply.

Reflection Vocabulary was for long an overlooked aspect of learning a new language. During the last decades, the vocabulary has moved from the periphery into a central position. We find this attention truly well-deserved, as we are confident that vocabulary, including not just words but also their meaning, orthography, pronunciation, context and conjugation, is in the very essence of the process of learning a new language. For a large majority of learners, the ultimate goal of studying is to be able to communicate in a new language. If you do not wish to lean completely on non-verbal skills, mastering vocabulary is not just important, but crucial in a foreign language environment. As language teachers, we need to think of how we can incorporate vocabulary into our teaching and provide opportunities both inside and outside the classroom for our students to be exposed to native speakers. However, this represents a challenge when we have to elaborate an evaluation in this area. This course provided us with some tools that we can use and apply.

Reflection Speaking is fundamental to human communication. Just think of all the different conversations you have in one day and compare that with how much written communication you do in one day. Which do you do more of? In our daily lives most of us speak more than we write, yet many English teachers still spend the majority of class time on reading and writing practice almost ignoring speaking and listening skills. On the other hand, if the right activities are taught in the right way, speaking in class can be a lot of fun, raising general learner motivation and making the English language classroom a fun and dynamic place to be. As English teachers, we need to think of how we can incorporate listening into our teaching and provide opportunities both inside and outside the classroom for our students to be exposed to significant listening input. However, this represents a challenge when we have to elaborate an evaluation in this area. This course provided us with some tools that we can use and apply.

Conclusion As English teachers, we need to think of how we can incorporate all the skills into our teaching and provide opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom for our students, in order to be exposed to significant learning experience. However, this represents a challenge when we have to elaborate an evaluation in this area. This course provided me with some tools that I can use, apply, and develop in class and make interesting activities that help students feel comfortable when they communicate and interact with the language, and also when they have to be evaluated. On evaluation techniques I learned that I can used different forms to check if my students are learning, by using formative or summative evaluations or use checklist and rubrics in order to make a different and dynamic test.
