2024: A Milestone year for Probus in the South Pacific. Feature Story - P23 Kapiti

As we enter a new year, Probus Clubs around Australia and New Zealand will be looking forward to their Annual General Meetings in March.

I am aware that many Clubs have been preparing for the past few months; it is really important that we plan ahead, look to introducing new members on to our committees, and, most importantly, look forward to the future to ensure that we continue our great work of delivering fun, friendship and fellowship in our local communities.

While it would be ideal to have all Management Committee positions filled at an Annual General Meeting, that is not always the case. Not having all positions filled is a challenge but it does not mean that a Club has to close. If your Club is experiencing difficulties in filling Committee positions, please reach out to our Team.

For a number of years now, I have spent each January working at the Australian Open Tennis championships in Melbourne. I have met many players, past players, coaches and officials during that time, and I have always been impressed with the dedication they have shown to reach that level in their chosen sport. Not all of them make a great deal of money from tennis, but they all love it, and show true dedication to reaching that level.

So, it is with Probus. We have many people in our Probus community who realise the importance of what we do, in providing a real sense of community and companionship to retired and semi-retired people in our local towns and suburbs, by providing opportunities for people to come together and enjoy each other’s company. I believe we really are providing a great service to our local communities.

This year, 2024, marks fifty years since Probus first arrived in the South Pacific. Our first Club, Kapiti Coast Probus near Wellington, started on 4 November 1974. It is still going strong, and at present has one hundred and eighteen members. A series of celebrations will be taking place in New Zealand over the course of 2024.

No matter the distance, across Australia and New Zealand, we are all members of the same Probus family so why not think about travelling to New Zealand on Trade Travel’s fully escorted 50th Anniversary Tour of New Zealand. More information about this tour appears on page 24. For those that cannot

travel, think about marking the celebration in some way as 50 years of Probus, no matter where it is, it is very special. It is staggering when you think about the thousands of retirees Probus has helped stay engaged and connected in over 50 years.

A reminder that we have called for nominations for Probus Club members in South Australia or Northern Territory to fill an upcoming vacancy for the position of Representative Member/Director. The term of office for the successful candidate will be from August 2024 to August 2027.

Members, particularly those who also have business experience in finance, accounting, communications, marketing, or as a public company Director, are urged to consider nominating. Given the large proportion of female Probians, we hope to see women who meet the criteria nominate for the role.

We ask any member who meets the criteria to consider this opportunity. Further information about the roles can be found on PSPL’s website or by contacting our Team.

I would like to thank all the committee members and other helpers who have served their Clubs so effectively over the past year, and welcome new Committee members and helpers who are taking on roles in 2024. Also, welcome back to those members who are continuing on in their roles in the new Probus year. I wish you well, and be assured, you are carrying out a great service for your local community.

When you’re setting up your estate plan, the first thing to consider is, “What do I want to achieve with my estate plan?” Families usually have different goals and expectations for their plans. These goals might involve making sure wealth is smoothly passed on with as little legal fuss as possible, protecting assets for beneficiaries who might not be financial experts, cutting down on tax obligations, or supporting causes you care about. Your unique situation, like the kinds and locations of your assets, where potential heirs live, international laws, and your beneficiaries’ financial situations, all factor in significantly when figuring out the best approach for your estate plan.

Let’s look at some common estate planning tools families usually use.

Your last will and testament

Commonly referred to as a will, stands as a foundational and crucial element within your estate plan. It serves as a definitive document specifying the distribution of your assets afterwards. This legal instrument grants you the authority to allocate your assets according to your specific wishes, whether to family members, friends, or charitable organisations. An

advantage of a will is its ability to surpass succession laws, giving you control over the inheritance of your assets and their proportions.

A great feature is the flexibility of changing and tweaking your will throughout your lifetime, dependent upon your mental competency. However its essential to recognise that wills may face challenges, especially if your estate plan is all about the will and doesn’t make sure all your paperwork lines up with what you really want.

A private family trust

A private family trust is a potent tool in estate planning, and you can set it up during your lifetime. Trusts are pretty versatile and can be used for different things. Unlike a will that hands out assets after you’re gone, a trust can handle and split up assets both while you’re alive and afterwards. Trusts bring a bunch of benefits, like helping with succession planning, safeguarding assets from unwanted claims, preserving money for kids or family who aren’t great with finances, and managing wealth for beneficiaries who might not be money-savvy. Trusts come in different types – revocable, irrevocable, discretionary, and determinate trusts – and which one you go for depends on what you’re aiming for and your specific situation.

Gift deeds

It lets you (the giver) transfer assets to the person getting the gift (the receiver). This is very useful if you want to make sure your chosen beneficiaries get their hands on specific things right away. Unlike a will, which kicks in only after you’ve passed and might cause a fuss, a gift deed makes those asset transfers happen immediately. It’s a way to support your loved ones while you’re still around.

Power of Attorney (POA)

A Power of Attorney (POA) is a crucial part of your estate plan. It’s a legal paper that gives someone you trust the authority to handle your money matters if you’re unable to. By picking a trusted person as your attorney-in-fact, you make sure that if you can’t manage your finances, someone reliable steps in smoothly. But here’s the thing – it’s very important to choose someone responsible for this job because a Power of Attorney can cause trouble if it ends up in the wrong hands.

Each of these tools in estate planning has its own distinct role and can be selected based on your particular goals. It’s a good idea to seek guidance from a seasoned estate planning advisor or lawyer to make sure your plan matches your goals and that your wishes are carried out just the way you want. Estate planning is an ongoing process that should be checked and tweaked regularly to account for shifts in your life, changes in tax laws, and updates to your financial situation.

Developing better sleeping habits

Generally, your sleep patterns tend to be naturally stable from your 20s through to your 60s, however, beyond that, as we age, our sleep decreases in quality and the prevalence of sleep problems increase. Interestingly, when people get older and retire, they tend to change their sleep patterns.

This is because their sleep is no longer dictated by work environments, meaning that in many cases, previous early risers now sleep in a little, or even go to bed a bit later.

Most people aged 30 to 55 don’t prioritise sleep – they think they’re too busy for it, but come retirement, they feel like they have the time for it.

Red flags for poor sleep

If you’re not getting enough shut-eye each night, there are a number of signs to alert you – and those around you – to the fact. They include:

• Poor moods;

• Impaired judgement;

• Being cranky;

• Poor memory;

• Blood shot eyes and dark circles under the eyes;

• Lack of clear thinking;

• Slower reaction times;

• Poor eating;

• Being sleepy in the middle of the day;

• Loss of empathy;

• Poor coordination; and

• Irritability.

Causes of poor sleep

Lack of sleep can cause health problems, but at the same time, certain health problems can cause lack of sleep.

For example, Parkinson’s disease, asthma, depression, stress, reflux, restless leg syndrome, chronic pain, incontinence, dementia and sleep apnoea are all conditions that affect sleep quality.

Seeing your doctor can help find and treat the underlying causes of poor sleep.

Why you need sleep

People who have regular, good quality sleep have better overall health than those who don’t. Sleep restores your physical and mental wellbeing, leaving your mind refreshed and your body repaired.

Your brain needs to switch off each night to recuperate. Poor sleep means you and your brain will be operating at sub-par levels during the day.

The other thing you need to be aware of as you age is the relationship between falling and sleep. Sleeping well reduces your risk of

falls and injury, and that’s important as you age.

Sleep is also related to weight. Research has found that people getting eight-and-a-half hours of sleep a night lost almost twice as much weight as people only sleeping five hours each night. Furthermore, people with poor sleep habits gain more weight than people who sleep well. One of the main reasons that weight is affected so much is that your eating habits change when you’re tired.

Connected to weight is sleep apnoea. Sleep apnoea is a condition where the throat is obstructed, often due

to being overweight, and this causes you to stop breathing completely a few times a night. Weight loss can result in a reduction in the incidence of sleep apnoea.

Getting enough shuteye each night can reduce your risk of heart disease. When you eat well, exercise, drink moderately and don’t smoke, your risk of developing heart disease decreases. But it’s not just your heart that is affected by your sleep habits.

Poor sleep is related to a higher risk of chronic health issues such as diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure and depression.

7 tips for a good rest

1. Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning.

2. Get eight hours of sleep a night.

3. Avoid daytime naps.

4. Ditch cigarettes as they can keep you awake.

5. Reduce alcohol and caffeine intake before bed.

6. Exercise regularly outside as the light, movement and fresh air assists with sleep.

7. Invest in good sheets, mattresses and pillows.

The year 2024 is a milestone year for Probus in the South Pacific. Fifty years ago, in 1974, the Probus Club of Kapiti Coast was formed. Kapiti Coast was the first Probus Club in Australasia, two years before the first Club in Australia, which was the Probus Club of Hunters Hill, which was formed in 1976.

Both of these Clubs share the common bond of being the first Clubs in their respective countries, and they also share the fact that they continue to thrive today.

Probus originated in the UK. The first Probus Club was formed in England at Caterham, Surrey in 1967. The word “Probus” was derived from the words “professional” and “business,” today the movement has evolved to become a worldwide community with Probus Clubs across the globe.

No matter what the age of your Probus Club, or how long you have been a member of Probus, 50 years of Probus in New Zealand deserves recognition right across our Community.

Toronto Macquarie Ladies Probus Club organised three group tours of ten members to enjoy a day at Parliament House in Sydney. The groups travelled by train and were greeted at reception by their local member’s staffers who escorted them to the staff canteen, while they waited for the tour to begin. There was a delicious lunch held for the guests of the local member Greg Piper who happens to be the Speaker of the Lower House. After lunch Club members got a tour of the chambers, office areas, rooftop gardens and library, which was followed by some time listening to The Budget-for 2024 and Question Time.

Their experienced driver, Keith, skilfully navigated the scenic roads, providing insightful commentary about local landmarks along the way, including a peek at the newly constructed Nancy Bird Walton Airport.

Approximately an hour into the journey, Keith and Terry surprised the group with a delightful welcome break at a picturesque picnic spot. Refreshing tea, coffee, and a generous selection of biscuits and cakes awaited the eager travellers, fuelling them for the rest of their adventure.

Their next stop was the captivating Everglades, a heritage-listed gem in Leura. Owned by the National Trust, this former residence has been transformed into a captivating art gallery, cafe, and garden, attracting visitors with its unique character and breathtaking backdrop.

After bidding farewell to the Everglades, they were back on the coach to enjoy lunch at a local RSL. Their lunch was served promptly and was welcomed by the members. With renewed energy, they boarded the coach once more for the scenic journey back to Narellan.

The Varsity Lakes Probus Club embarked on a delightful outing to Boomerang Farm in Mudgeeraba, a mere 7 kilometres from their usual grounds. Surrounded by picturesque trees and diverse wildlife, including the iconic kookaburra, the venue offered a tranquil escape into the countryside.

After indulging in a refreshing morning tea provided by the farm, the club’s men took charge of the grill, whipping up a delicious BBQ lunch enjoyed by all. Relaxed laughter and engaging conversations filled the air as members savoured the food and the serene ambiance.

Thirty-one Probus members from Indooroopilly Probus Club set off from Fig Tree Pocket and embarked on a captivating journey to Toowoomba, their adventure starting with a warm welcome at Wellcamp Airport. Greeted by Johnno, the Project Development Officer, they enjoyed a delicious morning tea with pre-ordered coffees, teas, and cakes.

Community Outreach Event

Despite its small size, the Emu Park Mixed Probus Club packs a powerful punch, diligently serving the retiree community in their coastal village for over 16 years. Their commitment to keeping seniors active and engaged shines through in their diverse October activities.

Their efforts began with a request to their local shire, successfully illuminating the iconic “Singing Ship” landmark in the club’s blue and gold colours. Fostering inter-club connections, they enjoyed a delightful lunch with their neighbouring Yeppoon Probus Club.

Always seeking new experiences, some members ventured into the realm of indoor bowls, joining the Emu Park Indoor Bowls Club, and trying their hand at the sport. Reaching out to the broader public, they organised promotional stints outside the local Drakes Supermarket on Senior’s discount day.

A highlight of the Christmas luncheon was the celebration of member Graeme’s thirty years of membership at The Probus Club of Burnie.

Graeme joined the Club on July 16th, 1993. This anniversary is a rare attainment which is achieved by very few Probians. In his introductory address, President Sam thanked Graeme for his years of service to the Club as President, Committee-member and regular contributor to Club activities.

City of Burnie Mayor Teeny Brumby presented Graeme with a framed certificate and a 30 years lapel badge.

The excitement continued as the group secured seats in the public gallery to witness Question Time firsthand. Members of the Combined Probus Club of Barossa enjoyed a festive Christmas celebration filled with music, shared stories, and carols. President Judy welcomed everyone, acknowledging birthdays and anniversaries. Heartfelt thanks were extended to members for their contributions, followed by a delicious meal. Members shared Christmas memories, Elizabeth sang “O Holy Night,” and laughter filled the air. Gifts were awarded in a lucky spot competition, and MC Rod thanked the Wanera staff for their hospitality. It was a day of fellowship and festive cheer.

Mount Gambier Probus Celebrate

40 th Anniversary

The Probus Club of Mount Gambier marked its 40th anniversary in grand fashion last December, gathering around a festive and informal luncheon with roughly 60 members, partners, and guests in attendance.

The celebratory formalities included the presentation of the 40th Anniversary certificate by the Rotary District Chair, followed by heartfelt recognition of the club’s life members. A highlight was the awarding of 25-year membership pins to five deserving members (with one being absent during the photo moment). RDPC Margaret graciously presented these pins, acknowledging the dedication and contributions of these individuals.

Adding to the occasion, the local MLC graced the event as the guest speaker, offering insightful perspectives on the future of volunteering within the community.

Probus Club members enjoyed a truly fantastic lunch at The Walkers Arms Hotel, their merriment enhanced by the festive spirit of a Christmas Trivia Quiz. The delicious meal included a drink and dessert, providing the perfect fuel for an afternoon filled with laughter, friendly competition, and holiday cheer.

Up Close And Personal At Monarto Safari Park

Twenty-eight eager explorers from Glenelg Bay Probus Club gathered on a brisk, cloudy morning at the Monarto Safari Park’s Visitor Centre, ready to experience the wonders of Australia’s largest open-range zoo outside of Africa. Many warmed up with hot coffee and delicious apricot-oatmeal biscuits, courtesy of Sue.

Boarding spacious buses, they embarked on a journey through the expansive 1,500-hectare park, traversing miles of well-maintained walking tracks. The knowledgeable volunteer guides shared fascinating information about the park, established in 1993 on semi-arid land with just 250 millimetres of annual rainfall.

At the first stop, some opted to get an up-close look at the playful chimpanzees and meerkats in their natural habitat. However, most continued to the popular Waterhole stop, where the majestic giraffes awaited. Here, captivated visitors listened to an insightful keeper’s presentation, followed by another at the Tasmanian Devil enclosure.

The diverse animal kingdom unfolded further, revealing American bison, kangaroos, graceful antelopes, and speedy ostriches. While some wished to spot elusive echidnas, lizards, and snakes, the undisputed crowd favourites were the lions and giraffes.

Four slumbering lions and one active one captivated the group, with the news of four recent lion cubs adding to the excitement. Their expansive 11-hectare enclosure, roughly the size of Adelaide Zoo, offered ample space for roaming. At the giraffe stop, close observation revealed the fascinating four-chambered stomachs and non-predatory nature of these gentle giants, as detailed in the engaging keeper’s talk. Photos captured the unique experience of being mere feet away from these remarkable creatures as they gracefully fed.

A Grand Day Out

The Combined Probus Club of Mannum embarked on a delightful day trip to Victor Harbor and its surroundings, venturing beyond the official “Probus Month” but offering an experience no less enjoyable. Supported by a grant from the Mannum Progress Association, they hired a coach for the day, driven by one of their own members, Roland. An expert driver and local guru, Roland transported 22 Probus members and 7 visitors from Mannum to Goolwa, the gateway to their day’s adventure.

There, they boarded the iconic Cockle Train, part of the Steam Ranger Heritage Railway. Operated by dedicated volunteers, this historic train chugged along the oldest steel railway in Australia, offering charming vintage interiors and breathtaking coastal views.

Upon arrival in Victor Harbor, free time unfolded, allowing everyone to wander the town, explore its offerings, indulge in shopping, and savour a delicious lunch at their leisure. After reuniting, Roland once again took the helm, leading them on a scenic tour around The Bluff, a stunning natural landmark. Their journey continued to Hindmarsh Island, where they were rewarded with panoramic views of the mighty Murray River meeting the Southern Ocean.

Mystery Adventure

The Combined Probus Club of Wantirna Heights embarked on a Mystery Tour. Due to heavy traffic, they had been on the road for an hour or so before they had worked out that their destination was the RAAF Base at Point Cook. After a reviving cuppa and delicious snacks, they met James, the museum curator, who accompanied them as they looked around the fascinating displays and provided some interesting historical facts.

It has a National Heritage listing and the comprehensive displays of aircraft, technology and the “human side” of serving in the air force were as thought provoking as they were illuminating.

Celebrating 30 Years

In November 2023, the Frankston Combined Probus Club proudly celebrated its 30th anniversary.

Starting with 53 members in November 1993, the Club has steadily grown to its current membership of 111. During the celebratory meeting, President David of the Rotary Club of Frankston presented a Certificate of Congratulations to Joe, President of the Frankston Combined Probus Club, on behalf of Probus South Pacific Ltd. An impressive 85 members and 13 eager potential members also gathered to mark the occasion.

This milestone commemorates not only three decades of community, friendship, and activity, but also the enduring spirit of collaboration and commitment within the club.

40 th Birthday Celebration

The Probus Club of Rye passed their 40th Birthday in November and received a commemorative plaque from PSPL. The Club celebrated the achievement at their Christmas party in December. A historical resume was provided by Ian and a special birthday cake was cut by the current President Howard.

informative visit to SEA Electric – an electric truck manufacturer, thanks to Barrie. The company’s Vice President gave a candid and spirited presentation of the production process, which was both informative and entertaining.

Following the presentation, the group moved to the truck assembly area to closely view and learn about the trucks’ components. Upon departure from the plant, most of the members then went to the Dandenong Club for dinner.

Oaks Day Shenanigans

Oaks Day Shenanigans at Pakenham Central Probus saw members decked out in their finest attire, embracing the festive spirit of the Melbourne Cup. From extravagant hats to stylish suits, the atmosphere was filled with excitement and camaraderie as they celebrated the renowned racing event in style. Laughter, friendly banter, and a shared love for the races created a memorable day filled with joy and community spirit.

Morning Melodies At Kyabram

A free morning tea and morning melodies show was staged by the Probus Club of Kyabram in October to mark Seniors Week and Probus Month. Shepparton entertainer Michael Hogan, who often doubles as an Elvis tribute artist, had his audience rocking in their seats during the one-hour floorshow. More than 100 seniors attended the show at the Kyabram Senior Citizens Clubrooms.

Zest, an initiative of Holmesglen TAFE’s Waverley Campus, offers a unique “real-life” restaurant experience for their hospitality students.

In attendance was a few Notting Hill Probus members, with the kitchen staff presenting a diverse three-course menu. Despite accommodating an unplanned increase in diners (a rare occurrence!), the staff and students rose to the challenge with remarkable professionalism.

The Probus Group explored the historic church, viewing local art and needlework. Annual Mystery Bus Tour

Intrigue hung heavy in the air as members of the Probus Club of White Hills boarded their coach at Lake Weeroona Rowing Club. Their mission: to guess their unknown destination! Despite valiant attempts, “Somewhere North” was the closest anyone got.

The first stop was a scenic park beside the river in Echuca, after further rounds of guessing, the coach finally pulled up alongside the Deniliquin RSL, delighting everyone with a delicious two-course lunch.

A quick stroll around the block stretched their legs before they returned to the coach for a short drive to their destination: The Depot. The oft-used phrase “something for everyone” rang true here. Thirty-three members of the Probus Club of Ballarat South embarked on a delightful Spring Caravan & Cabins adventure in Peterborough. Their home base was the Great Ocean Road Tourist Park, where warm hospitality and a spacious camp kitchen set the scene for happy hours, BBQs, and shared laughter.

Throughout their five-day journey, the group marvelled at iconic sights along the Great Ocean Road, including The 12 Apostles, Razorback, and London Bridge. The scenic beauty left them awestruck, providing moments of reflection and a deep appreciation for nature’s grandeur.

This Probus adventure was more than just a trip; it was a celebration of friendship, shared experiences, and the joy of discovery.

The East Malvern Probus Club embarked on a journey through history, immersing themselves in the iconic Royal Exhibition Building of Melbourne. Although the initial weather wasn’t ideal, the informative tour resonated deeply with the Probus members. To savour the experience, they concluded the day with a delicious brunch at a nearby café, strengthening their bonds and reminiscing about the tour’s highlights.

From the captivating “Conflation” exhibition to the must-see Flying Boat Museum, they journeyed through art, history, and local craftsmanship. A highlight was meeting a skilled scroll worker whose intricate creations left everyone awestruck. Their Swan Hill adventure provided a delightful blend of relaxation, cultural discovery, and lasting memories.

Celebration For Hollywood Kings Park Probus Club Members

Her successor Greg then served two years. The Club, which has capped its membership at 80, continues to thrive.

When Plans Change, Adventure Awaits

Despite some initial challenges, the Probus Club of Eaton’s latest excursion into the Ferguson Valley proved to be a delightful experience, brimming with fellowship and adaptability. As organiser Les humorously acknowledged, last-minute changes due to unexpected holiday closures forced a re-plan, but these “glitches” only served to highlight the club’s flexible spirit and strong sense of community.

The day began with a scenic bus ride, offering a different perspective on the summer-transformed valley compared to their previous visit’s lush greenery. Their first stop, the Preston Valley Store, provided a shady haven for morning tea and friendly connections.

A highlight for many was returning to Frogs Hollow, a familiar spot where the club previously released frogs. Newcomers joined the veterans in exploring the old quarry, chuckling at the well-hidden amphibians.

With their planned venue unavailable, the group embraced the opportunity to delve into the region’s bounty, stopping at a roadside fruit stand. The delicious nectarines and soon-to-ripen pears were a testament to the area’s agricultural richness. A quick detour to Glen Mervyn Dam, despite its low water level, offered another picturesque moment.

Lunchtime found them at the Mumballup Pub, a charmingly rustic location where hearty meals compensated for any ordering hiccups.

The true gem of the day, however, was Talisman Wines. This winery, specially opened for the group, offered a fascinating glimpse into sustainable practices and “off-grid” living. The owner’s insights and the peaceful lakeside setting perfectly complemented the aromatic and award-winning wines. As one member jokingly confessed, ensuring the quality required sampling “each one”.

10 th Anniversary Celebrations

35 Years Of Fun & Friendship

The Probus Club of Kingsley (Mens) celebrated its 35th anniversary with a luncheon at the Greenwood Hotel function room. The event was attended by Club members who were honoured to welcome distinguished guests Peter (Probus South Pacific) and Ralph (PAWA).

The Club was formed in early 1989, sponsored by the Wanneroo Rotary Club, under the watchful eye of Keva who became a Probus member a year later and served the Club faithfully for many years. The 14 founding members were remembered during the lunch program with a name roll call.

Amazing Probian Daphne Carswell

Daphne Carswell was awarded an OAM on Australia Day 2024. Daphne has been a proactive and popular member of Wagga Wagga Sunset Probus Club for many years, and the Award is a fitting recognition of her many talents. She has served as President of the Club and always takes an active part in social events, planning both long and short trips, and is always available for advice on successfully running the Club.

Daphne has recently been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for her service to the community. Mrs Carswell embarked on her journey into volunteering in her late 20s while working at the Wagga Wagga Base Hospital in human resources. The now 80-year-old first dipped her toe into charitable work through the Kooringal Public School Auxiliary in the mid-1970s and became treasurer.

“I was in my late 20s when I became the treasurer of the auxiliary. When I began working at Wagga Base Hospital, there was an opening to assist with all the fundraising, the race days, the balls, and becoming involved with the Miss Wagga Quest,” she said.

When Ms. Carswell retired, she sought new

ventures, which ultimately led her to join the Wagga Wagga Sunset Probus Club.

“I joined Probus because I wanted to meet new people, and I became very involved in that,” she said. With the skills she had learned through years of working at Wagga Base Hospital, Ms. Carswell knew she had more to offer, and she soon made it her mission to bring the University of the Third Age (U3A) to Wagga.

“I had always wondered why we didn’t have U3A in Wagga,” she said. “I went to a public meeting, and from there, I joined a committee and became vice president in charge of development, and I was able to use the skills I had to bring U3A together. I have continued as president for the last six years, and we now have over 500 community members.” U3As provide affordable learning to older people, encouraging them to

stay active and engaged with their communities.

While Mrs Carswell has spent most of her life giving back to the community, she has also benefited greatly from it herself. “My involvement in all of the community work has enriched me with the friendships and camaraderie I have formed along the way,” she said.

The work she has done has not been in vain, and Mrs. Carswell said she was honoured to have been nominated for the OAM by her friends and, because of that, be awarded. “It is special because it tells you what your friends think about you and the work you have done,” she said. “I’m honoured to be receiving an award for something I have enjoyed doing. It’s a bit overwhelming, but it makes me feel worthwhile.”

Amazing Probian Zeta Newbound

Born in 1923 to Australian parents working in England, Zeta Newbound’s life began with a touch of the extraordinary. Her mother, a violinist, and father, a dental technician, instilled in her a love for music and a thirst for adventure. Early childhood in Canada exposed her to the glitz and glamour of the Royal Muskoka Hotel, where her mother’s music thrived. Learning to swim in the lake and exploring various activities nurtured her independence.

Returning to Australia at 11, Zeta embraced the sunshine, learning to surf in Bondi and settling in St Kilda. High school at MacRobertson Girls High brought close friendships, while a primary teaching qualification led to diverse experiences across rural schools and Melbourne University’s Physical Education program. Summers saw her teaching in pools and sea baths, showcasing her active spirit.

In 1950, Zeta’s adventurous spirit took flight as she taught PE in Japan to children of the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces. Traveling with author Hal Porter broadened her horizons and challenged cultural norms. Back in Australia, she used her newfound passion for

Japanese language to earn a degree from RMIT.

Meeting Max Newbound during teacher training, their paths diverged during the war. Reuniting after the war, their whirlwind romance led to marriage in 1952. Family life blossomed with daughter Peta and son Michael, finding their haven in Hampton and later Flinders. Zeta’s energy extended beyond family. She actively participated in the Flinders community, serving on the Golf Club committee, organizing walks for Somers Probus, and engaging with various local groups. Her love for sports shone through her golf captaincy and dedication

to physical activities. Travel, both overseas adventures and domestic caravanning, fuelled Zeta’s wanderlust. Even after Max’s passing, she continued exploring, driving her beloved manual car well into her 90s. Her children and grandchildren remain her greatest source of joy, while simple pleasures like dark chocolate and white wine bring a smile to her face. Witnessing the world’s challenges ignites a fire in Zeta. Her message? “Use more common sense!”
