FOR A BETTER US

2017 DEVELOPMENT NEWS MONROE COUNTY YMCA

Dear Friends, As a nonprofit, cause-driven organization, we understand the challenges we face as a community. And when challenges arise, the Y – and donors like you – step in. Together, we can make our community a better place for all. At the Y, our welcoming network of support helps people from all walks of life find the encouragement and tools they need to thrive regardless of age, ethnicity, ability, or income. That’s why we support them with strong role models and enriching experiences that promote academic success, build self-reliance, and foster lifelong healthy habits. Your gift helps us inspire kids, families, and adults to reach their greatest potential socially, emotionally, and physically through high-impact programs that change lives, including: ENERGIZE, Y Summer Day Camp, youth sports, Cardiac Rehab, swim lessons, preschool, adult health, balance classes, and so much more! With your support, we can continue to raise the needed funds that can strengthen our community. Thank you for your friendship and for your continued support! Respectfully, Sara Herold & Lorin Rommel Monroe County YMCA Development Department

Legacy of Support Sebastian and Cesar Isidro needed a safe, caring environment for the summer, so the Jonah Binkley Memorial Endowment Fund allowed the boys to thrive and experience YMCA camp as young, aspiring leaders. The boys had a wonderful time spending the summer at the Y and evenings as a family. Mom, Luz, would like to thank our donors for this great opportunity. “Camp at the Y was very positive, both socially and emotionally for our family. We didn’t have to work extra hours, so this gave us the chance to spend more time together as a family, which was a true blessing.”

The Jonah Binkley Memorial Endowment Fund Jonah spent many summers at the YMCA Camp Arrowhead while visiting his grandparents, Morris and Alice Binkley. After the loss of their grandson, Morris and Alice set up the Jonah Binkley Memorial Endowment Fund that creates camp scholarship opportunities in his honor. This endowment fund is Jonah’s legacy that will live on for many generations. We think Jonah would be proud of these two incredible boys, Sebastian and Cesar. Jonah Binkley

Devotion and Determination

A Member Profile

Nineteen years ago, Charlie Parker suffered a heart attack. After five bypass surgeries and two stint placements, Charlie became an active YMCA member and dedicated participant of Cardiac Rehab, a program created to help those at risk for heart disease safely and gradually build their level of fitness. At 92 years old, he continues to drive himself to the Y three days a week to attend his classes. “I figure if it weren’t for the Cardiac Rehab program, I wouldn’t still be here. And I plan on going through with it until I no longer can.” The benefits Charlie has received from the Cardiac Rehab program has inspired him to be generous to the Y over the years – more notably, a children’s playhouse that campers still use summer after summer. We’re grateful for Charlie’s devotion to the himself, the Y, and the Y’s mission!

Inspired to Give Endowment Profile

YMCA Endowment Heritage Club Member, Carol Seaman, wanted to honor her mother with a gift to the Tom and Deb Porter Aquatics Fund — an endowment that provides funds for swim lessons or water activities for all ages. Martha and Carol Seaman Martha Seaman, Carol’s mother, involved Carol in many YMCA aquatic activities from an early age. Carol’s childhood memories of learning to swim, water ballet, and lifeguarding at the Y are a small portion of what inspired her generous legacy gift in memory of her mother, who also enjoyed aquatics classes at the Y. The Tom and Deb Porter Aquatics Fund presented the perfect opportunity for Carol to honor her mother and ensure the funds donated would allow future generations to experience the necessity of aquatics. Martha’s initial encouragement of Carol’s aquatics class participation developed Carol’s deep connection to the Y and led her to raising a family that was also very involved in the Y, as well as to her Board service, and life-long friendship with Tom and Deb Porter. As the Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer of Cook Group, Carol’s community call-of-service was encouraged by Cook Group founder Bill Cook, who inspired his employees to “do something to make things better.” We are forever grateful for Carol’s volunteer leadership and financial gifts to the YMCA. Thank you for making more possible.

Y for All Annual Campaign The 2017 Gala raised nearly $70,000 for the Y for All Annual Campaign. The Northwest Y was beautifully transformed to host an elegant dinner, auction, and dancing. The event was filled with generous donors who understand how important the fund is to support our community members with Y programs and services. Thank you to our generous sponsors, committee members, and evening donors who made the event successful! This fundraising event tremendously helped support our $200,000 annual Y for All goal needed to ensure funds are available for financial assistance for membership and programs at the Y. With our Y for All Annual Campaign, we offer a place for belonging, relationship-building, and celebrating the uniqueness of every individual. Your gift helps us ensure access and belonging for all.

But we can’t do it alone. We need your help to reach our goal! YMCA donors, volunteers, members, and partners like you make the difference. Together, we can address our community’s most critical needs. When you give to the Y, you partner with us to provide life-changing programs and services. From water safety to disease prevention, from addressing community health challenges to providing access to all, everything our Y does is in service of making us – as individuals and a community – better.

Funded by the YMCA Endowment Fund, ENERGIZE is an in-school program focused on educating fourth grade students on healthy eating choices and the importance of 60 minutes of exercise per day. “During the school year, we do taste-testings once a month to help introduce students to different foods from all five of the major food groups on MyPlate,” said Ashley Lowers, the YMCA community youth outreach coordinator. “We work with 700-800 students, so food and supplies such as cups, napkins, or plates, add up quickly.” The ENERGIZE program is just five classes away from reaching all fourth grade classes in Monroe County. Once that goal is met, Ashley plans on expanding the program beyond the classroom. ENERGIZE recently partnered with the WonderLab Museum to offer a new afterschool program where snacks, hands-on learning activities, and nutrition activities are offered. “When a student tells me they tried a new food and really enjoyed it, or they started going for a walk with their parents in the evening, that’s when I know this program is a success and leaves a lasting impact on our youth.”

Endowment News

The Monroe County YMCA Endowment and planned giving program provides lasting impact on our community. This is a way donors leave a legacy for themselves, a family member, or a friend. The principal of an endowment is never touched, allowing the fund to become a growing and sustainable source of income for the YMCA for our future generations. Thank you to the vision of leaders that have gone before us to create a lasting legacy for the YMCA. You can help us build an even greater legacy in securing YMCA services for future generations with a contribution to the general Endowment Fund or to a designated fund, or become a Heritage Club Member. Heritage Club is a special group of people who have made a commitment with a significant contribution to the Endowment, or have included the YMCA in their estate planning. REFLECTING ON OUR PAST … Since our current Southeast Branch opened its doors in 1981, the original 50,000 square foot facility has been home to a thriving summer camp, evolving group exercise classes, an expanding community, and more. Today, after numerous renovations and expansions, our Southeast Branch has doubled in size and supports over 30,000 member visits per month.

… INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE With such high usage in a mature building comes the need to repair, replace, and renovate, and we need your continued help in caring for our Southeast Branch. Your donation can help us achieve several vital projects in the coming year: -- Upgrade the cardio equipment -- Maintain the outdoor shelters -- Replace 14 outdated HVAC units -- Attend to the exterior of the building -- Fix three aged sections of the roof -- Remove a significant number of dead ash trees -- Replace the main pool pump and UV systems -- A Splash Pad (vision for the future) Thank you for your contribution!
