Dustin Tucker, Noah Heckmann & Levi Kujala showcase their soulful vocal harmonies and intense groove-laden instrumentals in this all-original episode. The band formed just days after the passing of Dustin’s father, Tex Tucker, from whom he inherited the gift of musicianship and songwriting. The two share an eerily similar songwriting style that’s strongly bonded to the earth and the universe, and shows equal intrigue in how people and relationships affect our time on this planet. The songs from the band’s debut EP were all written on Tex’s legendary red Gibson acoustic guitar and were arranged by the trio in a dark underground military bunker. The group recorded their debut EP in Nashville, TN and have released two albums to critical acclaim. TIM STILLER

From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration 2018 Airs 12:30pm and 8pm Monday, January 1 Also 1/3 4am
Great Performances continues the cherished tradition of ringing in the new year with the Vienna Philharmonic at the opulent Musikverein, under the baton of Italian conductor and Chicago Symphony Orchestra Music Director Riccardo Muti, featuring favorite Strauss Family waltzes accompanied by the dancing of the Vienna State Ballet. This year’s program welcomes new host Hugh Bonneville, best known as Robert, Earl of Grantham, in Masterpiece’s global phenomenon, Downton Abbey. In addition to performances of waltz favorites like “Tales from the Vienna Woods” and “The Blue Danube,” joining the Strauss Family repertoire is music by Alphons Czibulka, whose “Stéphanie-Gavotte” provides the soundtrack to a pas de deux at Emperor Franz Josef’s private train station—which was ultimately used just once. This year’s other ballet performance features dancers from the Vienna State Ballet waltzing to “Roses from the South” by Johann Strauss II at the Schloss Eckartsau hunting lodge. The Vienna Philharmonic’s traditional New Year’s program is the largest worldwide event in classical music reaching millions of people annually through radio and television in over 80 countries. The program has showcased Viennese musical culture at the highest level, and since the first television broadcast in 1959, sent the world a New Year’s greeting in the spirit of hope, friendship and peace.

Black Hole Apocalypse Airs 8pm Wednesday, January 10
Also 1/12 1am, 4am; 1/14 mdnt; 1/15 noon
They are the most enigmatic, mysterious, and exotic objects in the universe: black holes. They’re also the most powerful; their gravity is so strong it can actually capture light. They’re the most destructive, swallowing particles, dust, gas, planets, and even giant stars. Anything that falls into them vanishes… gone forever. Astrophysicists are coming to realize that black holes just might be integral to the structure of the universe— and our very existence. In this 2-hour special, astrophysicist and novelist Janna Levin will take viewers on a journey to the frontiers of black hole science. We will meet with the leading astronomers and physicists to discover the most cutting edge research that is helping to shed light on these shadowy monsters, and we will explore the provocative questions: Where do they come from? What’s inside them? What happens if you fall into one? And what can they tell us about the nature of space, time, and gravity?

Alfred Lee Loomis as a young man AMERICAN EXPERIENCE
The Secret of Tuxedo Park Airs 8pm Tuesday, January 16 Also 1/18 2am, 5am
In the fall of 1940 the fate of Western civilization hung in the balance. Hitler’s armies were encamped along the English Channel, preparing for an invasion of Britain. In a desperate bid to form a technological alliance with the then-neutral United States, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill sent a small team of scientists on a clandestine transatlantic mission to deliver his country’s most valuable military secrets to America’s scientific leaders. When Churchill’s emissaries arrived, they delivered the most precious item in their collection—a revolutionary radar component—to a mysterious Wall Street tycoon, Alfred Lee Loomis. Loomis had for years led a double life, spending his days earning vast fortunes on Wall Street and his weekends working with the world’s leading scientists at his private laboratory in Tuxedo Park, outside New York City. Using his connections, his money, and his brilliant scientific mind, Loomis assembled a team of the brightest scientists, and directed their efforts such that radar would arguably play a more decisive role than any other weapon in the war. Based on Tuxedo Park: A Wall Street Tycoon and the Secret Palace of Science that Changed the Course of WWII by Jennet Conant, this program reveals the long-overlooked story of an extraordinary yet unheralded man.

The White Wolves of Ellesmere Island are the icons of this Arctic wilderness. N AT U R E
Arctic Wolf Pack Airs 7pm Wednesday, January 17 Also 1/19 3am, noon; 1/21 1am
At the very northern edge of North America is Ellesmere Island, where the unforgiving Arctic winds tear through the tundra, dipping temperatures to 40 below zero. Running through this shifting sea of snow and ice is one of the most hardened predators on the planet, the White Wolf. But as the spring melt approaches, these roaming hunters must adapt to being tethered parents as new additions to the pack have just been born. With their herds of prey continuing to move, we witness a desperate race to keep up and bring back a kill to the hungry mothers and cubs. Traveling farther and farther away from their den each day puts these hunters and their young at risk in this fight for survival. Narrated by Campbell Scott.

Your Generosity Is Inspiring! A Special Thank You to Our Members… We are pleased to report that thanks to your continued generosity, MontanaPBS exceeded the goal of $250,000 for our December pledge drive. Your contributions help provide programs like C.M. Russell and the American West, and Glacier National Park: The Crown of the Continent which celebrate the beauty of Montana and our independent spirit—programs that teach us and take us places we have never been before. Most importantly, they are programs that are made available for everyone to experience. We know that a pledge drive can interrupt your regular routine, but we hope that you were able to enjoy one of the many concerts offered that you would be otherwise unable to attend, or maybe you were able to delight in highlights from the past 25 years of Backroads of Montana from the comfort of your own home. We are sincerely grateful to everyone who pledged during the December drive. Thank you for making public television in Montana a priority in your life! If you meant to pledge but have not yet, there is still time as we are accepting pledges through January 11th. Go to our website at www. montanapbs.org or please call us at 1-800-426-8243.

Airs daily at 4:30pm, 7:30pm and 1:30am on January 1–14; then 5pm & 10:30pm on Wednesdays, January 17-31 Also featured on Saturday, January 6 at 4am, 6am, 7:30am, 1pm, 4pm, and 6pm. Hosted by chef, nutritionist, and New York Times best-selling author Ellie Krieger, this program is designed to help real people get the most out of life by cooking in the “sweet spot,” the convergence where delicious and healthy meet. The 13-part cooking series offers solutions for every meal of the week, with healthy, time-saving strategies for menu-planning, food-shopping and cooking. Viewers see these strategies in action as Ellie and her team visit individuals and families to solve specific food challenges—whether at home or in the workplace—and offering delicious recipes and practical tips along the way. Ellie also discusses the concept of volumetrics, the method of incorporating low calorie, high volume ingredients into recipes to make them more filling.
WordGirl: Rise of Miss Power An intergalactic visitor, Miss Power, comes to earth and promises to teach WordGirl everything she knows about crime-fighting. When the lessons don’t go as planned, WordGirl and her sidekick Captain Huggy Face begin to question whether Miss Power is a super hero or a super villain. Airs on MontanaPBS Kids 7pm and 8:30pm 1/12, 1/13, 1/14.

In 1914, President Theodore Roosevelt and legendary Brazilian explorer Candido Rondon made a perilous journey into the dark and deadly heart of the Amazon rainforest to chart an unknown river in one of the wildest places on earth. What was anticipated to be a relatively tranquil journey turned out to be a brutal test of courage and character, claiming the lives of three men and almost killing the president.
