Great Falls Trio Betty Jane blends sophisticated jazz harmony with exciting funk rhythms and heartfelt lyrics. Offering a combination of Montana inspired originals and arranged covers, Betty Jane showcases a rich palette of music on 11th & Grant with Eric Funk. Betty Jane is the inspired creation of singer, songwriter and pianist, Britta Lee, known for her powerful, expressive singing and unique piano style. Joining Lee in this accomplished ensemble is drummer Alex Platt and bassist Rob Kohler. Kohler, a skilled composer and educator, has been a featured performer at many music festivals around the world including Montreux, Strawberry, Vancouver International, and the Stanford Jazz Workshop. Platt is a recording artist, teacher and producer who recently returned to his home state of Montana from Los Angeles. He studied at the California Institute of the Arts and has performed with members of the Coltrane family as well as luminaries in styles from country to funk.

Montana Ag Live The Future of the MSU College of Agriculture

Local, USA: The Blackfeet Flood Fifty years after a devastating flood that left him an orphan, a Blackfeet man returns to his reservation to face the ghosts of his past. In 1964, Swift Dam broke and swept through Montana’s Blackfeet Reservation - uprooting homes, killing 31 people, and signaling the end of a way of life for many traditional families. Fifty years after the worst natural disaster in the state’s history, a Blackfeet man named Butch returns home to confront the tragedy that left him an orphan at 14, and to try to remember “what it means to be Blackfeet.”

System. Forty years later, the fate of these federally protected areas remains in political limbo as wilderness and multi-use advocates spar over the management, use and future of nearly 663,000 acres of public lands. This film deep dives into the history of Wilderness Study Areas and explores the lively debate surrounding the wild and highly protected lands. Veterans Coming Home: Finding What Works Montana has one of the highest per capita veteran populations in the nation.

About one in ten of our citizens served. And these days, many of those folks are struggling to transition from life as a soldier to life as a civilian. Fortunately, our state is also home to some unique and innovative programs—involving everything from our courts, to fly fishing, and extreme sports—that are changing and even saving the lives of veterans and their families. Blooming Bozeman Generally, Montana’s population is increasing, but some communities are experiencing exponential growth, bringing both opportunities and challenges.

In one Montana community, Bozeman and the surrounding area, part of the growth is due to increased enrollment at Montana State University. We visit with city officials, community leaders, and University representatives, to look at the planning, as well as the available programs and activities that help promote a sense of community and guide the trajectory of growth. Keeping Weeds in Check with Biologic Controls Noxious weeds, especially invasive species, reduce ag production, increase soil erosion, and decrease wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities. Melissa Maggio-Kassner, the State Biocontrol Coordinator for Montana’s Department of Agriculture, joins the panel to update us about the role of bio control in Montana’s fight against noxious weeds. In this episode of The Rundown, Jackie travels around the state to collect the stories of female veterans and service members. On fishing boats on the Yellowstone River, a group of veterans re-unites 15 years after two tours in Iraq to find healing and joy in fly-fishing. In Billings, a nonagenarian nurse awaits recognition for her service in WWII. Coming home to civilian life can be a struggle for every service member, but women face unique struggles. Step inside the VA to hear from counselors on how female veterans respond to stress and PTSD, and learn what cracks in the system may prevent them from getting the care they need. Women are the fastest-growing segment of the military population, with more than 2 million serving after 9/11, but often feel their service is not recognized or valued as highly.

Backroads of Montana Collecting Memories Meet a 1950s television icon and Montana-native Kirby Grant, better known as “Sky King.” Ride along to the Schafer Air Field in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, the last private airfield in a wilderness area tended to each summer by the Montana Pilots Association. Meet a Fairfield woman with an unusually large hankie collection, and a young woman from Missoula whose entrepreneurial dream is an inspiration to those around her.

Fromberg to Ulm Along the Missouri River south of Great Falls, meet a woman who gathers fiber from her family farm animals to make a variety of products. Learn about Montana’s butterfly population. Visit all that remains of the town of Gebo: the cemetery, which is being researched and preserved by a woman from Fromberg. Airs Saturday, 1/11 at 5pm Two Dot to Fishtail Stop at the Sip & Dip in Great Falls, complete with the piano stylings of Pat Sponheim. Visit a knife maker in Missoula; Montana’s oldest general store in Fishtail; and the Wheatland Senior Citizen’s Center in Harlowton. Airs Saturday, 1/18 at 5pm

Backroads of Montana: Kilns and Kin The Backroads crew travels along as family and friends gather near Lodge Grass to move animals onto summer range; we visit some

abandoned beehive charcoal kilns west of Melrose—all that’s left of one of Montana’s earliest and most productive gold smelters; we find the exact geographic center of the state near Lewistown; and visit with a woman who’s maintaining her family’s connection to the African-American history of the Miles City area. William Marcus hosts the program from a barber shop in Columbus. Airs Saturday, 1/25 at 5pm

Medicaid Expansion: Insured or in Doubt? It’s ideology versus insurance in the Montana Legislature this spring as legislators decide how to continue health care coverage for nearly 100,000 Montanans. Nearing the end of its two-year trial-run in Montana, and the clock winds down on the 90-day legislative session and the sunset built into the original Medicaid expansion looms closer, healthcare providers in the state’s largest and smallest hospitals keep apprehensive eyes on the legislature, afraid that expansion won’t be renewed, and millions of dollars of new revenue and thousands of new patients will be lost. Airs Thursday, 1/30 at 7pm

Medicaid, Mental Health and Montana’s Health Emergency The future of federally-funded healthcare coverage is being called into question on a national level. With presidential budget cuts and pending court cases challenging the Affordable Care Act, federally-funded healthcare coverage could shrink or disappear for some Americans, including thousands in Montana. Montana faces other growing health emergencies including opioid addiction and mental health treatment. Airs Thursday, 1/30 at 7:26pm

As the world welcomes a new decade, Great Performances continues the tradition of ringing in the New Year with the Vienna Philharmonic at Vienna’s famous Musikverein. The Vienna Philharmonic performs approximately 40 concerts in Vienna annually, among them the New Year’s concert and the Summer Night concert Schönbrunn, which are broadcast in numerous countries around the world.
