2021 marks the 50th anniversary of “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” the Loretta Lynn song that became a book, a feature film, and an indelible part of popular culture. Like so many other songs written by Lynn, the lyrics told the story of her life and spoke to women who struggled to make ends meet. Lynn’s simple, straightforward song stories gave legitimacy to the joys, heartaches, struggles and triumphs of daily life. Taking viewers back to the time when she hit the airwaves, this program follows Lynn’s rise to record-breaking artist, topping the charts with her feisty female anthems, including “You Ain’t Woman Enough,” “Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’,” and “You’re Looking at Country.” Using archival audio interviews and classic performances, My Story in My Words, lets Lynn be the storyteller of her own remarkable life.

Burgers, Fries & Family Ties: The Richwine’s Burgerville Story Richwine’s Burgerville in Polson, Montana, is one of those rare family-run, blast-from-the-past, drive-in restaurants of yore. Purchased by Enoch and Lucille Richwine in 1962 as a means to support their family, this storied local eatery still does things the way they used to 59 years later. Evolving Arts: COVID: The Good and the Bad COVID-19 placed many new challenges on the arts. In the shock of its initial arrival, shows were cancelled, curriculums dropped, and plans fell to the wayside for the sake of safety. This program will explore how artists are evolving with the sudden change in times, and how the resilience of art persists in the face of challenges. Featured artists include Montana Shakespeare in the Parks, Eric Funk, Mountain Time Arts, Montana In Site Theater, Marcedes Carroll, and Montana State University College of Arts and Architecture. Ghost Forests Head into the high country of the Rocky Mountains to examine the imperiled whitebark pine and meet the people determined to save it. As a keystone species, the stately five-needle pine provides shelter to dozens of high mountain creatures while its nutritious cones are packed with protein-rich seeds. But native mountain pine beetle and an exotic disease called white pine blister rust are killing the tree at alarming rates. Forest managers face an uphill battle to restore it. Wild by Law and Nature: Montana’s Wilderness Study Areas The fate of 9 federally protected wilderness areas in Montana remain in political limbo as wilderness and multiple-use advocates spar over the management, use and future of nearly 663,000 acres of public lands. This film deep dives into the history of Wilderness Study Areas and explores the lively debate surrounding the wild and highly protected lands. Airs 2/18 7:30pm

Playing for the World: The 1904 Fort Shaw Indian Girls’ Basketball Team In 1902, a unique combination of Native women came together at a boarding school in Montana. They used the new sport of basketball to help them adjust to a rapidly changing world. Their travels and experiences led them to places they never imagined. Ultimately, these women played for something much larger than themselves. Airs 2/24 4am

Never Long Gone: The Mission Mountain Wood Band Story In 1971, against the backdrop of cultural change that swept the nation, a group of Montanans with talent, big dreams and a tremendous sense of fun explored a sound that defied category. Sharing stories about working alongside musical greats like Bonnie Raitt and Charlie Daniels, playing to crowds that numbered in the tens of thousands, and surviving long years on the road, Never Long Gone offers an intimate portrait of a journey full of hope, loss and perseverance. Airs 2/27 11pm

Saving the Burg: A Story of Love, Sweat and Beers A deeply depressed former mining town in the 1980s, Philipsburg spent three decades restoring its historic downtown and building an enviable reputation as Big Sky Country’s “Comeback Kid.” The inside story of how “love, sweat and beers” brought a community back from the brink. Airs 2/27 12am

Keeping the Barn The barns of Montana are beautiful symbols of hard work and ingenuity and a reflection of the families who use them. As immigrants settled in Montana, they brought their building expertise. The English barn is the grandfather of the American barn and that is also true in Montana. The Finns and Norwegians crafted intricately notched log barns. The Croatians dazzled with their precise stone work. Now, over a century later, these barns are just some of the examples still standing tall across the Montana landscape. Airs 2/27 11:30am Charlie Russell’s Old West Explore Montana cowboy artist Charlie Russell’s enduring legacy through extensive examples of his artistic body of work, commentary by scholars, biographers, and experts, and archival photographs and film. Russell used his art, sculpture and writing to tell the story of the transition of the Montana landscape from the open range to fences and plows. Russell also carefully depicted Native Americans just as their traditional way of life was coming to an end. Airs 2/27 4pm Montana On My Mind Inspired by the best-selling book of the same name, this program combines stunning film with inspiring quotes, music and commentary by Michael S. Sample. Including magnificent scenery, people, places and events, this program will leave you with an unforgettable portrait of Montana. Airs 2/28 10:30am Fort Peck Dam Work had just begun, and already it was the largest dam in the world. It provided hope and the prospect of a regular paycheck during the darkest days of the Great Depression. The dam was an engineering feat in a place as harsh and desolate as any on earth. Thousands of men and their families faced unforgiving conditions to build the Fort Peck Dam, a project bold in design, daring in execution and far reaching in its effects. Airs 2/28 9:30pm Butte, America Butte was once the world’s largest producer of copper—the “Richest Hill on Earth,” the town that “plumbed and electrified America,” the Pittsburgh of the West. The community’s toughness, vitality and solidarity speak to what’s missing in America today, while raising profound questions about the costs and consequences of industrialization and use of natural resources. a long-time ski instructor near Anaconda, introduces us to the art of glass blowing in Townsend, shows us a new monument to Native American soldiers at the Little Big Horn Battlefield in Crow Agency and takes us to a reunion in the nearly forgotten northeastern Montana town of Comertown. Montana AG Live Mastering the Home Garden MSU Extension’s professional gardener Don Mathre will share tips on creating a successful home garden. Extension Fruit Tree Specialist Zach Miller will give tips about successfully growing fruit trees. Airs 2/7 11am

Hemp, Hemp and More Hemp There are hundreds of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and consumer products that start with growing hemp plants. Hemp is suitable for the growing conditions in Montana, and we are currently the number one hemp-producing state in the U.S. Regulation is evolving to help growers meet demand, and the Montana Department of Agriculture is developing support programs for commercial hemp production. Jamie Fitterer from the Montana Hemp Company will educate viewers on the uses of hemp and current resources and markets available to producers. Airs 2/14 11am

Wild Pigs in Montana Wild pigs have crossed the border from neighboring areas, and are being reported in a number of parts of Montana. MSU Extension Wildlife Specialist Jared Beaver discusses the feral pig invasion that is plaguing some Montana producers. Airs 2/21 11am

Coming Home In this episode, we accompany the Shakespeare in the Parks troupe to Birney, the smallest community to host their tour, visit Kremlin-Gilford for its last homecoming parade, plant a special tree with a group of Girl Scouts in Great Falls, and walk an interpretive trail near Hamilton that tells the story of Lewis & Clark from another perspective. Collecting Memories We are introduced to an icon of 1950s’ television as we profile the high flying exploits of Montana-native Kirby Grant, better known as “Sky King.” Next we ride along for a trip to the Schafer Air Field in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, the last private airfield in a wilderness area lovingly tended to each summer by the Montana Pilots Association. Then we meet a woman in Fairfield with an unusually large hankie collection, and a young woman from Missoula whose entrepreneurial dream is an inspiration to those around her. A irs 2/20 5pm

Richwine’s Burgerville in Polson, Montana, is one of those rare family-run, blast-from-the-past, drive-in restaurants of yore. Purchased by Enoch and Lucille Richwine in 1962 as a means to support their family, this storied local eatery still does things the way they were done 59 years ago. Each bull meat burger patty is still hand-pressed by Jeremy Richwine on the gadget his father, Shane, and grandfather, Enoch, used thousands of times over the decades. Enoch and Lucille’s daughter, Marcia, now runs Richwine’s with an inspiring level of commitment to excellence that makes this eatery stand out on a national level. The idea for Burgers, Fries & Family Ties, came to local film producer David W. King after eating perhaps his 50th Cheeseburger Deluxe at Richwine’s Burgerville. Over a period of 18 months, King shot behind-the-scenes of Burgerville’s finely-tuned operation, which is akin to an acrobatic ballet in tight quarters. How Montanans Voted: Analyzing the 2020 Election What were the voting

The program includes clips from Sadie’s early performances and interviews with people who have worked with her. It also portrays two frantic weeks as Sadie joins visiting artists and Montana musicians to sing the role of Musetta in the Intermountain Opera Association’s production of Puccini’s “LaBoheme.” Airs 2/19 12:30pm

An Alien Place: The Fort Missoula Detention Camp 1941–1944 This program chronicles the history and experiences of the 1,200 Italian and 1,000 Japanese nationals held at Fort Missoula by the Department of Justice from 1941-1944. As foreign nationals and not US citizens, these men were arrested and sent to Fort Missoula. Japanese internees were subject to loyalty hearings conducted by the Department of Justice. The Hard Way At 89, Bob Hayes still ran nearly every day. This program follows Hayes as he trains for the Bighorn 50k ultramarathon and explores a life with purpose and momentum. A irs 2/7 10:30am, 2/8 2:30am

Fish Between the Falls Ten thousand years ago Kootenai people painted pictures of white sturgeon on the rocks above the lake where they lived. These impressive fish, the largest and one of the oldest in North America, were an important part of the tribe’s diet and the inspiration for their elegant sturgeon-nosed canoes. Now, dikes and dams have changed the river system so much that sturgeon no longer successfully reproduce. But the people whose culture is bound up with these fish and the people who control the river today are working together to restore the Kootenai River White Sturgeon to their ancestral home. Elser considers “three miles an hour,” the walking speed of a horse, the best way to see and savor life. Learn about the changes in wilderness management Elser both witnessed and helped realize. Montana: The Second Century: The Adventures of Moccasin Joe Explore the wonders and horrors of Montana’s “Wild West” through the eyes of a young New England man Sgt. George S. Howard, nicknamed Moccasin Joe. As a scout for the 2nd Cavalry, Company E, George participated in the battles of Rosebud, Powder River, Tongue River, and Slim Buttes; marched in blinding snowstorms of Montana and Wyoming; starved during the Horsemeat March of 1876; and roamed through Yellowstone. He recorded his most intimate thoughts in his 257-page diary. Airs 2/26 12:30pm

On Easter Sunday, 1939, contralto Marian Anderson stepped up to a microphone in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Inscribed on the walls of the monument behind her were the words “all men are created equal.” Barred from performing in Constitution Hall because of her race, Anderson would sing for the American people in the open air. Hailed as a voice that “comes around once in a hundred years” by maestros in Europe and widely celebrated by both white and Black audiences at home, her fame hadn’t been enough to spare her from the indignities and outright violence of racism and segregation. Voice of Freedom interweaves Anderson’s rich life story with this landmark moment in history, exploring fundamental questions about talent, race, fame, democracy, and the American soul.

Head into the high country of the Rocky Mountains to examine the imperiled whitebark pine and meet the people determined to save it. As a keystone species, the stately five-needle pine provides shelter to dozens of high mountain creatures while its nutritious cones are packed with protein-rich seeds - a major food source for grizzly bears. A clever bird, the Clark’s nutcracker, depends upon the seeds, too, and the whitebark pine relies on the bird to distribute its seeds. But native mountain pine beetle and an exotic disease called white pine blister rust are killing the tree at alarming rates. Forest managers face an uphill battle to restore it before it’s too late. Meet tree climbers collecting cones in Canada’s national parks and a University of Montana scientist whose promising discovery could help harness genetic resistance to save the tree. Learn why they think the whitebark pine is worth the incredible efforts to save it.
