2021 marks the 50th anniversary of “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” the Loretta Lynn song that became a book, a feature film, and an indelible part of popular culture. Like so many other songs written by Lynn, the lyrics told the story of her life and spoke to women who struggled to make ends meet. Lynn’s simple, straightforward song stories gave legitimacy to the joys, heartaches, struggles and triumphs of daily life. Taking viewers back to the time when she hit the airwaves, this program follows Lynn’s rise to record-breaking artist, topping the charts with her feisty female anthems, including “You Ain’t Woman Enough,” “Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’,” and “You’re Looking at Country.” Using archival audio interviews and classic performances, My Story in My Words, lets Lynn be the storyteller of her own remarkable life.

Beyond the Elements NOVA
WEDNESDAYS 8PM begins February 3
Picking up where he left off in NOVA’s popular special, Hunting the Elements, David Pogue sets out on a worldwide quest to find the key molecules and chemical reactions that have paved the way for human civilization, life, and even the universe as we know it. And along the way, he uncovers the simple principles that produce such a dizzying diversity of matter from elements on the periodic table. Reactions WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3 8PM Also 2/8 1pm WORLD 2/4 5pm, 10pm; 2/5 6am
Just about every solid, liquid, or gas in the world as we know it begins with reactions between individual atoms and molecules. Host David Pogue dives into the transformative world of chemical reactions, from the complex formula that produces cement to the single reaction that’s allowed farmers to feed a global population by the billions—a reaction that when reversed, unleashes the powerful chemistry of high explosives.
Indestructible WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10 8PM Also 2/15 1pm WORLD 2/11 5pm, 10pm; 2/12 6am
Glass so strong you can jump on it, rubber so tough it protects a clay pot dropped from 50 feet, endless varieties of plastic. Scientists and engineers have created virtually indestructible versions of common materials by manipulating the chains of interlocking atoms that give them strength—but have they made them too tough? Host David Pogue explores the fantastic chemistry behind the everyday materials we depend on, and how the quest for durability can be balanced with products’ environmental impact.
Life WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 17 8PM Also 2/22 1pm WORLD 2/18 5pm, 10pm; 2/19 6am
Without the chemistry of photosynthesis, ozone, and a molecule called Rubisco, none of us would be here. So how did we get so lucky? To find out, host David Pogue investigates the surprising molecules that allowed life on Earth to begin, and ultimately thrive. Along the way, he finds out what we’re all made of—literally.

Keeping the Barn The barns of Montana are beautiful symbols of hard work and ingenuity and a reflection of the families who use them. As immigrants settled in Montana, they brought their building expertise. The English barn is the grandfather of the American barn and that is also true in Montana. The Finns and Norwegians crafted intricately notched log barns. The Croatians dazzled with their precise stone work. Now, over a century later, these barns are just some of the examples still standing tall across the Montana landscape. Airs 2/27 11:30am Charlie Russell’s Old West Explore Montana cowboy artist Charlie Russell’s enduring legacy through extensive examples of his artistic body of work, commentary by scholars, biographers, and experts, and archival photographs and film. Russell used his art, sculpture and writing to tell the story of the transition of the Montana landscape from the open range to fences and plows. Russell also carefully depicted Native Americans just as their traditional way of life was coming to an end. Airs 2/27 4pm Montana On My Mind Inspired by the best-selling book of the same name, this program combines stunning film with inspiring quotes, music and commentary by Michael S. Sample. Including magnificent scenery, people, places and events, this program will leave you with an unforgettable portrait of Montana. Airs 2/28 10:30am Fort Peck Dam Work had just begun, and already it was the largest dam in the world. It provided hope and the prospect of a regular paycheck during the darkest days of the Great Depression. The dam was an engineering feat in a place as harsh and desolate as any on earth. Thousands of men and their families faced unforgiving conditions to build the Fort Peck Dam, a project bold in design, daring in execution and far reaching in its effects. Airs 2/28 9:30pm Butte, America Butte was once the world’s largest producer of copper—the “Richest Hill on Earth,” the town that “plumbed and electrified America,” the Pittsburgh of the West. The community’s toughness, vitality and solidarity speak to what’s missing in America today, while raising profound questions about the costs and consequences of industrialization and use of natural resources. Burgers, Fries & Family Ties: The Richwine’s Burgerville Story MONDAY, FEBRUARY 1 8PM THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 4 7PM SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6 4PM
Richwine’s Burgerville in Polson, Montana, is one of those rare family-run, blast-from-the-past, drive-in restaurants of yore. Purchased by Enoch and Lucille Richwine in 1962 as a means to support their family, this storied local eatery still does things the way they were done 59 years ago. Each bull meat burger patty is still hand-pressed by Jeremy Richwine on the gadget his father, Shane, and grandfather, Enoch, used thousands of times over the decades. Enoch and Lucille’s daughter, Marcia, now runs Richwine’s with an inspiring level of commitment to excellence that makes this eatery stand out on a national level. The idea for Burgers, Fries & Family Ties, came to local film producer David W. King after eating perhaps his 50th Cheeseburger Deluxe at Richwine’s Burgerville. Over a period of 18 months, King shot behind-the-scenes of Burgerville’s finely-tuned operation, which is akin to an acrobatic ballet in tight quarters. On Easter Sunday, 1939, contralto Marian Anderson stepped up to a microphone in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Inscribed on the walls of the monument behind her were the words “all men are created equal.” Barred from performing in Constitution Hall because of her race, Anderson would sing for the American people in the open air. Hailed as a voice that “comes around once in a hundred years” by maestros in Europe and widely celebrated by both white and Black audiences at home, her fame hadn’t been enough to spare her from the indignities and outright violence of racism and segregation. Voice of Freedom interweaves Anderson’s rich life story with this landmark moment in history, exploring fundamental questions about talent, race, fame, democracy, and the American soul.

Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song Tracing the 400-year-old story of the Black church in America, this program reveals how Black people have worshipped and, through their spiritual journeys, improvised ways to bring their faith traditions from Africa to the New World, while translating them into a form of Christianity that was not only truly their own, but a redemptive force for a nation whose original sin was found in their ancestors’ enslavement across the Middle Passage.
Episode 1 TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16 8PM Also 2/19 3am WORLD 2/20 6pm, 10pm
Henry Louis Gates, Jr. explores the roots of African American religion beginning with the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the extraordinary ways enslaved Africans preserved and adapted their faith practices from the brutality of slavery to emancipation.
Episode 2 TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 23 8PM Also 2/26 3am WORLD 2/27 6pm, 10pm
Discover how the Black church expanded its reach to address social inequality and minister to those in need, from the Jim Crow South to the heroic phase of the civil rights movement and the Black church’s role in the present.

Head into the high country of the Rocky Mountains to examine the imperiled whitebark pine and meet the people determined to save it. As a keystone species, the stately five-needle pine provides shelter to dozens of high mountain creatures while its nutritious cones are packed with protein-rich seeds - a major food source for grizzly bears. A clever bird, the Clark’s nutcracker, depends upon the seeds, too, and the whitebark pine relies on the bird to distribute its seeds. But native mountain pine beetle and an exotic disease called white pine blister rust are killing the tree at alarming rates. Forest managers face an uphill battle to restore it before it’s too late. Meet tree climbers collecting cones in Canada’s national parks and a University of Montana scientist whose promising discovery could help harness genetic resistance to save the tree. Learn why they think the whitebark pine is worth the incredible efforts to save it.

Filmed over the course of more than six years at some of nature’s most spectacular locales — from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska — the series is filled with incidents and characters as gripping and fascinating as American history has to offer. Filmmakers Burns and Dayton Duncan vividly reveal behind-the-scenes stories about the making of the series, while engaging interviews with Park Ranger Shelton Johnson and cinematographer Buddy Squires provide additional background. This program is also a story of the unforgettable Americans who made them possible. People from every conceivable background — rich and poor; famous and unknown; soldiers and scientists; natives and newcomers; idealists, artists and entrepreneurs — devoted themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved, and in so doing reminded their fellow citizens of the full meaning of democracy.

9:30 MT Fort Peck Dam Work had just begun, and already it was the largest dam in the world. 4 P. 4 10:00 WORLD Nature: Equus: Story of the Horse:

It’s Valentine’s Day in Pinkville, and Pinkalicious can’t wait to make valentines for her class party. But, when Pinkalicious and Peter befriend the Cupid, he offers them a trade: he’ll become a real kid and join Pinkalicious’s class, while Pinkalicious becomes Cupid for the day and delivers valentines to everyone (with Peter as her trusted assistant)! Things seem pinkatastic until Pinkalicious and Peter run out of Cupid’s “Love-Is-In-The-Air” spray.
