Butte’s history is a saga of unbridled capitalism and urban vitality. It is the story of the evolution and eventual eclipse of skilled manual labor; of immigration and unionism; of corporate colonialism and global geopolitics; of rapid urban development and its social ramifications; of the evolving roles of women in contemporary society; and of an influential but largely unappreciated frontier experience.

Imagine 10,000 miles of mine shafts and tunnels, ore trains running day and night, round-the-clock blasting and drilling, 15,000 men speaking a dozen different languages and working in as many as 50 mines. The city of Butte was, in effect, a mammoth subterranean machine, one so powerful that within two generations it transformed a small mountain settlement into a full-blown urban-industrial metropolis. Sometimes called the Pittsburgh of the West, Butte is the native home of the copper mining industry, and its productivity strongly influenced the material and economic well-being of America in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

MontanaPBS producers Gus Chambers and Paul Zalis present this new, one-hour documentary, Charlie Russell’s Old West. This program focuses on Russell’s artistic genius and his role in witnessing, and visually chronicling, a pivotal moment in the history of the American West—the end of the open range. The film takes a reflective exploration of Russell’s work and influence. There are photographs and examples of his early works, sketches, illustrations, and major works. The documentary opens with Russell witnessing the Pablo buffalo roundup, one of the last in the West. It was a thundering and wild experience that both inspired and influenced his later work.  Saving the Burg: A Story of Love, Sweat and Beers Few towns in Montana have undergone a community comeback as striking as that of tiny Philipsburg. A deeply depressed former mining town in the 1980s, “P-burg” has spent three decades restoring its historic downtown and becoming Big Sky Country’s “Comeback Kid.” Award-winning documentary filmmaker Jim Jenner blends historic and current footage with dozens of interviews of the natives and newcomers who engineered an economic reinvention so profound it has won national recognition.  Butte, America Grounded in the dramatic personal stories of five generations of mining families, and narrated by Irish actor Gabriel Byrne, this program tells the tale of Butte, Montana.  Bozeman Trail The Bozeman Trail was an offshoot of the Oregon Trail, a shortcut to the newly discovered gold fields of Montana Territory. Pioneered by John Bozeman and others beginning in 1863, the Bozeman Trail became a flash point for a clash of cultures that would explode into warfare, destruction and tragedy. Set against a backdrop of the sprawling western plains and stunning Rocky Mountains, learn a different story of U.S. western expansion and manifest destiny. Airs Thursday, 3/12 at 7pm, Saturday, 3/14 at 2am Evelyn Cameron: Pictures From A Worthy Life Evelyn Cameron left a life of privilege in England and found a sense of peace on the Montana prairie. With an independent spirit suited for the American West, she started her own photography business. She left behind a legacy of photographs and diary writings providing an intimate portrait of pioneer life rarely seen. Airs Monday, 3/16 at 2am

Trash Talk: Montana’s Recycling Challenge The rules and markets for effectively recycling our trash are changing. According to the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Montanans produce on average 9.7 pounds of trash daily, but only two of those pounds are recycled. Meet three Montanans who give their different perspectives on the recycling challenges. Airs Sunday, 3/22 at 10am

Backroads of Montana Sharp Shooters Meet a Great Falls woman with a sharp eye at the pool table and 100 years of stories. In Lincoln, attend a family-run basketball tournament in honor of their late father. An Alberton woman has patrolled the sidelines at the team’s games with her camera for decades. And in Billings, the “King of the One Armed Bandits” sells and restores antique slot machines. William Marcus hosts the program from the historic M&M Bar in Butte. A Stone’s Throw From Anywhere Curlers slide into Havre for the annual bonspiel where we follow a team from the small north central town of Rudyard. Backroads highlights two young rodeo stars-inthe-making from Worden at the Little Britches Rodeo in Laurel. Hot Spring’s Troy DeRoche first began playing his Native American flutes as a way to sell them, but his music that has taken him around the world. And along a secondary road, we’ll explore the subtleties of “the old fashioned country hello.” Airs Saturday, 3/7 at 5:45pm, Friday, 3/13 at 4:15am, Sunday, 3/15 at 4:45am • MTPBS-C: Saturday, 3/14 at 6:15pm

Comin’ Round the Mountain The 30th episode introduces us to a man who’s returned to Glacier National Park to sign on for a new job. We’ll watch spring warmth transform a mountain snowpack, trace the history of Chinese immigrants in small-town Montana and more. Airs Wednesday, 3/18 at 5:30am

Cakes and Cowboys Backroads travels to Park City for the best angel food for miles around comes from “The Cake Ladies.” In Great Falls, we’ll visit a special site that honors fallen soldiers and pays tribute to living veterans. We stop in the central Montana town of Winifred to see what may be the world’s largest Tonka toy collection. Finally, we visit a working cowboy singer on his ranch south of Wibaux. Airs Saturday, 3/21 at 5pm, Wednesday, 3/25 at 5:30am Reaching Goals This edition of Backroads starts at an exciting amateur skijoring event in the Big Hole Valley, then meets up with some senior weight lifters in Ronan, visits an ice cave in the Pryor Mountains, and spends time with two women who have formed a fast friendship through their community work in Lame Deer. The Montana Climate Assessment is a product of the Montana University System’s Institute on Ecosystems, in collaboration with the Montana Climate Office, Montana Water Center and Montana State University Extension. The assessment focuses on climate trends and their consequences for three of Montana’s vital sectors. Measurable factors like snowpack and precipitation, along with high and low temperatures, affect stream flow and the growing season, which in turn have a big effect on crop choices and production techniques. Bruce Maxwell, co-chair of the Institute on Ecosystems, will discuss changing our ecosystems and the current assessment of Montana’s climate, and how it will affect Montana’s agriculture.

Today there are hundreds of products that start with growing hemp plants—and it isn’t about growing marijuana. Textiles, clothing and shoes, cords and rope, paper, a variety of foods, supplements and beverages, canvas, paint, insulation and other building materials, bioplastics and biofuel are all made from hemp. Hemp is suitable for the growing conditions in Montana, and we are currently the number one hemp-producing state in the U.S. Regulation is evolving to help growers meet demand. Paige & the People’s Band This ninepiece horn powered and vocally charged group is quickly becoming a mainstay of the Montana music scene, showcasing the sound of ’70s soul with a modern twist. The backup vocalists and horn section make the band reminiscent of groups like Cold Blood or Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings but with a contemporary feel. In 1865, the Civil War has finally ended. While some returned home, others sought new begingings Westward. Many head out on the Oregon Trail to find their destinies—manifest or otherwise. Some seek their fortunes in the gold fields of Wyoming and Montana. After failing at mining, John Bozeman decides to mine the miners. He and mountain man John Jacobs begin searching for a short cut from the Oregon Trail to boomtown Virginia City—delivering potential prospectors to the “Promised Land,” for a healthy fee of course. The trail they find follows long-established north-south game and Indian routes and through prime buffalo grazing country. In July 1863, Bozeman and Jacobs guide their first wagon train on the newly marked trail. The are quickly confronted by a large party of Northern Cheyenne and Sioux warriors, who warn them to turn back or be killed. This is the beginning of what will become Red Cloud’s War. The US government then builds and militarizes forts along the Trail to protect travelers. As for Bozeman, in 1864 he settles at the “Gates to the Gallatin Valley” (present-day Bozeman Pass) and with two others establishes the town that will bear his name, Bozeman, Montana. Just three years later he is killed under suspicious circumstances while traveling the Yellowstone River. IMAGE COURTESY OF RV MAGAZINE

Experience Franco Zeffirelli’s dazzling production of Puccini’s Turandot. Soprano Christine Goerke stars as the beautiful but brutal Princess Turandot alongside tenor Yusif Eyvazov as her suitor Calàf. Soprano Eleonora Buratto as Liù and bass-baritone James Morris as Timur complete the cast. Metropolitan Opera music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts and soprano Angel Blue—star of the Met’s current production of Porgy and Bess—is the program’s host. Zeffirelli’s production of Puccini’s masterpiece is set in the mythic past in Peking, China. Outside the Imperial Palace, an announcement is made: any prince seeking to marry Turandot must answer three riddles. If he fails, he will die. The most recent suitor who failed at this task, the Prince of Persia, will be executed at the moon’s rising. Among the onlookers are the slave girl, Liù, her elderly master and the young Calàf, who recognizes the master as his long-lost father, Timur, vanquished king of Tartary. As the Prince of Persia goes to his death, the crowd calls upon the princess to spare him, but Turandot orders the execution to continue. Transfixed by the princess’ beauty, Calàf decides he’s going to win her. Three ministers of state try to discourage him, but Calàf is unmoved and strikes the gong that announces a new suitor. Turandot’s father, Emperor Altoum, tries to persuade Calàf to reconsider his decision, but he will not be dissuaded. Turandot arrives and recounts the story of her ancestor who was abducted and killed by a conquering prince. She reveals this has turned her against men and her revenge is not letting any man marry her. Turandot then poses her three riddles to Calàf who answers them all correctly. The crowd erupts in joy and the princess begs her father not to give her to the stranger. Hoping he can win her love, Calàf presents Turandot with a challenge of his own: if she can learn his name by dawn, he will forfeit his life.
