by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, examines the visionary work and the turbulent life of Ernest Hemingway, one of the greatest and most influential writers America has ever produced. Interweaving his eventful biography— a life lived at the ultimately treacherous nexus of art, fame, and celebrity—with carefully selected excerpts from his iconic short stories, novels, and non-fiction, the series reveals the brilliant, ambitious, charismatic, and complicated man behind the myth, and the art he created.

Stories From Montana’s Future Stories from Montana’s Future: Lewis & Clark County showcases award-winning films produced by students from Helena and East Helena. The films are the result of instruction by MAPS Media Institute, which works in partnership with schools and organizations to bring media arts into the hands of Montana students.

Art for Survival tells the story of teens surviving tough times through the creative flow of art and community. Filmed and edited by students who were part of an inspiring program run by Helena’s Holter Museum of Art. East is a film that follows a day in the life of three teens from East Helena, MT, in a story about a sense of place, hard times, and the bonds of friendship.

Written and filmed in just four days by young artists from East Helena, this was a collaboration between MAPS and The Myrna Loy in Helena. Airs 4/1 7pm; 4/4 10:30am; 4/5 2:30am; 4/14 12pm

Paradise and Purgatory: Hemingway of the L Bar T and St. V’s Ernest Hemingway spent the summer and fall of 1930 hunting and fishing at the L Bar T, a dude ranch twelve miles south of Cooke City, MT. Although his vacation was initially a great success, it nearly ended in tragedy. Airs 4/1 7:30pm; 4/9 4am; 4/11 10:30am; 4/14 12:30pm

celebrating. Montana native and basketball legend Phil Jackson brings insight and humor to the disappearing landscapes of his youth in a story that will change the way you see rural America. Airs 4/12 2:30am

Live From Home: A Montana Music Home Video Special Montana musicians perform in many genres and with many instruments. During this COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing and stay-at-home orders, we’ve asked Montana musicians to record a song and share it with us from the comfort of their own home. John Floridis, host of Montana Public Radio program Musician’s Spotlight, hosts this series. Airs 4/15 7pm; 4/17 10:11pm; 4/19 2:30am; 4/27 2:05pm

Be Thou Always As a Guest Bill Ohrmann was a rancher from Drummond, Montana, who took up painting at the age of 78. He passed away in 2014 at 95, having completed more than 200 paintings and many sculptures and carvings. His work, which can be seen at the Ohrmann Museum and Gallery in Drummond, includes beautiful and sometimes graphic illustrations of our disregard for the earth and her many creatures.

Airs 4/18 10:30am The Hard Way The Hard Way is an uplifting story about the human drive to continue doing what we love late into life. At 89, Bob Hayes still ran nearly every day. “I don’t need to do things the easy way, I need to do things the hard way because I have the time and it keeps me in shape,” Hayes said. When he’s not running, he’s cutting his own firewood by hand, hauling hay to his cattle or tapping his maple tree for syrup. After caring for his wife who died from Alzheimer’s Disease, Bob Hayes forges ahead and continues his active and engaged approach to life. The Hard Way follows Bob as he trains for the Bighorn 50k ultramarathon. As Bob pushes 90, longer races take a larger toll. This documentary takes us on a journey that’s about more than running. Bob teaches us about living a life with purpose and momentum.

Grown and Made in Montana Montana produces a variety of raw materials and consumer goods. Timber and mining have been a significant part of our economy for a century and a half. Montana’s cattle production enjoys the reputation of begin among the best in the world, and the grains and cereals we grow in Montana end up on dinner tables in Asia and in beer in Mexico, to name just two examples. But, what happens when consumer demand shifts, or economic and environmental conditions change? How do producers adapt and expand, cultivating new products and accessing new markets?

Airs 4/11 6pm; 4/18 11am Emerald Ash Borer Ash trees are one of the most valuable and abundant woodland trees in North America, and are very popular for landscaping. The bright metallic-green beetle is smaller than a dime, but it can kill healthy trees—small ones in a year or two— but no more than four years for mature ash trees. Although it’s not been seen in Montana yet, the insect has been found in nearby states and provinces. Airs 4/18 6pm; 4/25 11am Sustainable Ranch Management The Dan Scott Ranch Management Program, part of MSU’s Department of Animal & Range Sciences, is the preeminent ranch management program in the Northern Great Plains and Intermountain West. This program offers students the opportunity to spend two consecutive summers on a working ranch, connecting academic course work with the real-life issues faced by the next generations of ranch managers. Young, principal clarinetist with the Montana Ballet Company and the Intermountain Opera Orchestras, shares a diverse classical repertoire on the stage of 11th & Grant, with works by Prokoviev, Mozart, and originals by Young. A cast of renowned Montana musicians accompany him on violin, viola, cello, percussion, and piano. Airs 4/8 7pm; 4/10 10pm

News, Brews and Views Visit a beer museum in Polson, spend time with the radio voice of the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation KGVA, visit Montana’s smallest state park and meet a Three Forks man who collects artifacts and stories for his newspaper column. Airs 4/7 5:30am

Harlo to Huntley Attend the annual threshing bee in Huntley and then get to know the Harlo Theatre in Harlowton where students run everything from popcorn sales to projectors, proving there’s more to this little theatre than box office returns. In Grass Range, a group of folks come from miles around once a month for a sense of community and nostalgia—and because they love to dance. Airs 4/14 5:30am

Coffee Creek to Haugan Travel to Coffee Creek for a stop at the only business in town, Nemec’s Parts and Repair. Then, visit the small town of Haugan to visit the Savenac Historic Tree Nursery, one of the oldest U.S. Forest Service nurseries in the West. Sample a slice of one of the best pizzas in the world in Bigfork and wind up at the Nevada City Music Hall to listen to the largest public collection of automated music machines in North America. Comin’ Round the Mountain Meet a man who’s returned to Glacier National Park to sign on for a new job. Watch spring warmth transform a mountain snowpack, trace the history of Chinese immigrants in small-town Montana and more. Airs 4/24 5pm

Singing in the Wires The 50 students at Greenfield School in Fairfield are energetic and bright. One reason for their success is a tasty lunch program. Spend a day with Lunch Lady Salley Young as she prepares a special meal that’s 100 percent Montana made. In Kalispell, enter the world of antique phones, with a man whose collecting began with his career as an installer with the phone company.

Veer off the road to some of Montana’s beautiful lakes and ponds to observe the springtime ritual of birds’ courtship dances. And meet a man in Fort Benton whose skill in crafting musical instruments is only surpassed by his generous spirit. Airs 4/28 5:30am

Hands On History Ten Montana middle-school students learn how to make history come alive. They spend a week in Virginia City learning fun, hands-on activities. The Beef Trail: A Pioneering Montana Ski Area The little-known story of the

an offshoot of the Oregon Trail, a shortcut to the newly discovered gold fields of Montana Territory. Pioneered by John Bozeman and others beginning in 1863, the Bozeman Trail cut through the heart of Indian country. It became a flash point for a clash of cultures that would explode into warfare, destruction and tragedy. Set against a backdrop of the sprawling western plains and stunning Rocky Mountains, the Bozeman Trail tells a different story of U.S. western expansion and manifest destiny. Airs 4/7 12pm

Butte Ski Club and its once-popular ski area, the “Beef Trail,” created by volunteers, many of them miners, in 1938. A number of innovative ideas and technologies pioneered by early members of the Butte Ski Club were later adapted by some of the West’s more popular ski areas. This documentary brings us vintage movie footage, old photos and great stories from skiers who remember skiing the Beef. Airs 4/23 12pm

Wild by Law and Nature: Montana’s Wilderness Study Areas The Montana

devastating invasive species in the world was detected in a handful of Montana waterbodies for the first time. The evidence of non-native mussel larvae in Tiber and Canyon Ferry reservoirs prompted a statewide emergency response as stakeholders rushed to combat the aquatic enemy.

Invasive zebra and quagga mussels, which are native to eastern Europe, have already wreaked havoc on the Great Lakes and spread throughout the majority of the U.S., except for Wyoming, Idaho, Washington and Oregon. The tiny invasive species can inflict colossal destruction and scientists and lawmakers agree that an infestation of zebra or quagga mussels is the single greatest threat to Montana’s lakes and rivers.

Wilderness Study Act of 1977 established 9 federally protected Wilderness Study Areas in Montana to be evaluated for potential permanent wilderness designation and inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System. Forty years later, the fate of these federally protected areas remains in political limbo as wilderness and multiple-use advocates spar over the management, use and future of nearly 663,000 acres of public lands. Beethoven in Beijing spotlights the resurgence of classical music in China through the legacy of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the first American orchestra to perform in China in 1973. Following the end of China’s Cultural Revolution, when Western classical music was banned in favor of politically themed works, the onset of “Beethoven fever” began. Narrated by American and Chinese musicians and historians, the film explores the impact of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s historic tour of China both then and now.

Montana has a wealth of musical talent. Singers, songwriters, composers, guitarists, violinists and trombonists display their virtuosity in a variety of musical styles, from rock, country, folk and americana, to Jazz and classical.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing and stay-at-home orders, live music performances have been put on hold. A dozen Montana musicians recorded a song and shared it with us from the comfort of their own homes. Featured artists include Andrea Harsell, Angella Ahn, Ashly Jane Holland, ChinookWinds, Chontay, Cove Jasmin, David Walburn and Michael Atherton, Eden Atwood, Elijah Jalil and Britt Arnesen, Halladay Quist, Josh Farmer, Matthew Marsolek, Stuart Weber, and Wylie Gustafson.

When L. Frank Baum published The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1900, he was 44 years old and had spent much of his life in restless pursuit of his American dream.

After working and failing at a string of odd jobs that honed his instincts for showmanship — chicken breeder, actor, marketer of petroleum products, shopkeeper, newspaperman and traveling salesman — Baum and his family headed west from their home in Syracuse, New York, in 1888. During his travels from Chicago to the Great Plains during the American frontier’s final days, he witnessed a nation coming to terms with the economic uncertainty of the Gilded Age. But he never lost his childlike sense of wonder and eventually crafted his observations into an enduring, magical tale of survival, adventure and self-discovery. American Oz tells the remarkable story of the man behind one of the most beloved and quintessential American classics, reinterpreted through the generations in films, books and musicals.

In 2017, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania had one of the highest incarceration rates of any major city in the United States. And it’s become the epicenter of a historic experiment that could shape the future of prosecution in America for decades to come. When civil rights attorney Larry Krasner mounted a long-shot campaign to become District Attorney, he ran on a bold pledge: to end mass incarceration by changing the culture of the criminal justice system from within. He shocked the establishment by winning in a landslide.

Now, the bureaucrats he spent his campaign denigrating are his co-workers; the police he alienated are his rank-and-file law enforcers.

Pressure comes from all sides of a system resistant to reform. Krasner’s unapologetic promise to use the power of the D.A.’s office for sweeping change is what got him elected; now that he’s in office, that same stubbornness threatens to alienate those he needs to work with the most.
