NOVA WEDNESDAYS 8PM
Ship that Changed the World WEDNESDAY 6/2 8PM Also 6/7 1pm WORLD 6/3 5pm, 10pm; 6/4 6am
Five centuries ago, the Age of Exploration and Europe’s imperial colonization of far-off lands was launched by a revolution in ship design that made long-distance ocean voyages practical. But exactly how this momentous innovation happened eludes historians. Now, the excavation of a rare intact wreck discovered off the coast of Sweden offers vital new clues to a maritime mystery. COURTESY OF PBS.ORG
Great Escape at Dunkirk WEDNESDAY 6/9 8PM Also 6/14 1PM As France fell to the German armies in May 1940, 400,000 Allied troops were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk. Their annihilation seemed certain—a disaster that could have led to Britain’s surrender. But then, in a last-minute rescue, Royal Navy ships and a flotilla of tiny civilian boats evacuated hundreds of thousands of soldiers to safety across the Channel— the legendary “miracle of Dunkirk.” Now, NOVA follows a team of archaeologists and historians as they recover fresh evidence of the courage, technical ingenuity, and brilliant planning that led to the operation’s success. With access to previously classified files recently released by the British government, they uncover the truth behind the myths of Dunkirk—notably, a claim that the Royal Air Force failed to protect the stranded men from the Luftwaffe’s constant bombing of the beaches. IMAGE: ISTOCKPHOTO.COM
First Horse Warriors WEDNESDAY 6/30 8PM The advent of horse riding was a momentous step in human history. But when and how did our ancestors first learn to master these animals? In a spectacular adventure, NOVA unlocks the mystery on the vast, grassy plains of Kazakhstan, where wild horses still roam free, and nomadic herders follow their traditional way of life. Investigating clues from archaeology and genetics, researchers reveal vivid evidence of the very first horsemen. They also discover warriors who swept across Europe, and turn out to be the ancestors of millions today. COURTESY OF PBS.ORG

Made in Montana Summertime! Backroads Roadtrip Planner for 2021: Explore More of Montana Montana’s Summer is finally upon us! It’s been quite a year. This summer may be the first opportunity for many of us to get out and safely spend some time exploring and learning about Montana: our history, places, events and people. There are so many great places to visit and so much history to explore throughout the Treasure State, and the MontanaPBS Broadcast schedule abounds with exploration ideas. Watch Backroads of Montana Saturdays at 5pm, and be sure to check out the new Backroads of Montana Roadtrip Planner 2021 on MontanaPBS.org (see p. 4). There are also many Backroads episodes in the schedule throughout June and the rest of the summer. Take a couple of days to visit Glacier or Yellowstone National Parks; follow a portion of the Lewis & Clark Trail; spend some time in one or more of our other National and State Parks and Monuments; tour any of the historic sites throughout the State; or spend time hiking or fishing, camping or picnicking in our great outdoors.

LEARN AT HOME Or Perish in the Attempt Using the best medical knowledge of 1803, Captains Meriwether Lewis & William Clark were the physicians for the Corps of Discovery expedition. Before the expedition departed, Benjamin Rush, a leading American doctor of the time, gave Lewis a two-week crash course in medicine, the best available at the time. With no knowledge of bacteria, viruses, parasites, antisepsis, or even how many of the internal organs functioned, Lewis & Clark doctored themselves, their men, Sacagawea, her baby, and the native peoples they visited. Throughout the three years (1803-1806) of wilderness travel, they treated snakebites, STDs, dysentery, frostbite, dislocated joints, gunshot wounds, axe gashes, mental illness, and more. Remarkably, in spite of the relatively poor medical care, all but one member of
the company returned home. Based on the book by David J. Peck, Do., Or Perish In the Attempt, the program helps us understand what they did, why they did it, what was almost always wrong with it, as well as some long distance diagnosis to get a sense of what medical science would do in the present day. Airs 6/1 12pm
The Last Artifact “The Last Artifact” tells the story of the scientists and metrologists around the world who worked to redefine the kilogram in 2018. The world’s base unit to measure weight, the kilogram was the last of the SI units still defined, not by a universal constant, but by a physical artifact: a man-made cylinder located at the International Bureau of Weights and Measurements in France. The program recounts how a necessary update to the standard resigned this object to history. Airs 6/1 1pm

Solidarnosc: How Solidarity Changed Europe TUESDAY, JUNE 8 9PM Also 6/14 3am
“Solidarnosc: How Solidarity Saved Europe” takes a look at the events that began 40 years ago in Poland that changed the Eastern European country, and the entire world, forever. After World War II, the Polish People’s Republic was initially a model supporter of the Soviet Union. With a growing shortage of food and other supplies, however, protests started. In the summer of 1980, emboldened by the visit of the first Polish Pope, John Paul II, the workers of the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk called a strike, founding the first independent trade union behind the Iron Curtain: Solidarnosc (Solidarity). The documentary contains archival footage from Solidarnosc circles and the secret police, some of which has never before been shown. It sheds new light on how Poland was changed from the inside, impacting Europe altogether.

Arabia with Levison Wood SUNDAYS 10PM
Levison Wood, a military-trained writer and photographer embarks on a rarely ventured route through the challenging environments and remote corners of a little-understood land — Arabia. As he learns to ride camels and dodges al-Qaeda, Isis and numerous criminal gangs, he gets to know the men and women who live there and does his best to understand this contradictory land. Lev’s entire journey through the Middle East is tough, with the blistering heat, warzones and delicate cultural issues to navigate. In the process, he immerses himself in the region’s cultures, revealing unique and powerful insights.
