We remember the legendary Ozark Club in Great Falls, visit the Ringing Rocks geological site near Pipestone, profile the fabled Butte entertainer “Luigi” and more. Echoes of a Bitter Crossing: Lewis & Clark in Idaho  This one-hour documentary explores the crucial Idahoan segment of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark’s 1804–1806 daring expedition from St. Louis to the Pacific coast. Nearly 200 years later, people are still retracing the explorers’ journey of discovery, in which the Idaho crossing played a major role. This is where the expedition almost ended in failure - where the nearly starved explorers were revived by the hospitality, care and food of the Nez Perce tribe. In interviews with Lewis and Clark experts, and with

members of the Nez Perce tribe from Idaho and neighboring states, the program highlights the difficult passage through Idaho. Among those featured are Gary Moulton, University of Nebraska history professor and editor of the Lewis & Clark journals; and Steven Russell of Iowa State University’s Department of Electrical Engineering. One of the inventors of the Global Positioning System, Russell now is using the system to map the exact location of the historic trail through Idaho. MontanaPBS–HD: Sunday, 7/14 at 10am

imagine what was more memorable in Glacier Park a century ago: the breathtaking scenery, or the adventure. Travel in time with us as we follow the adventures of our counterparts 100 years ago through rare, restored old film, museum pictures, and historical memorabilia. See how eastern city slickers were lured to north central Montana by a glitzy promotional campaign promoted by the Great Northern Railroad. The film makes use of the History Museum’s Bovey family collection of old film and restored photographs as we follow the Couch and Ford families’ journey by automobile, train and boat from Great Falls to Glacier National Park in 1914. Historical interviews with park rangers, Native Americans, historians and descendants of park concessionaires explain the Glacier Park adventure. “Glacier Park Remembered” was directed and produced by Emmy-winning filmmaker, Craig Wirth with Jim Meinert serving as Executive Producer. The film is presented by the History Museum in Great Falls, Montana. MontanaPBS– HD: Sunday, 7/7 at 10am, Monday, 7/8 at 2am  See story, right

Bard in the Backcountry  From first read through to final performance, this program takes a behind-the-scenes look at a summer of Montana Shakespeare in the Parks. Meet professional actors, some veterans and some fresh out of school, who have their lives changed by the people and places of Montana. Through the journey of the summer tour, the story reveals the mutual impact the tour has on the lives of the young actors and the people who put in the effort to bring Shakespeare to towns all across Montana and beyond. Hannah Waddingham singing with Warwick Davis and Noel Fielding

Eric Idle’s The Entire Universe  Airs 8pm Tuesday, July 2

Also 7/4 1am, 4am A cosmic explosion of comedy, music, dance and science, this program tackles nothing less than the origins of the cosmos in a zany one-hour variety extravaganza. In his quest to unlock the secrets of the universe, Idle is ably assisted by renowned British physicist Brian Cox and special guests Warwick Davis, Noel Fielding, Robin Ince and Hannah Waddingham, with an appearance from European Space Agency astronaut and former Space Station crewmember Tim Peake. Filmed before a live audience, Eric Idle’s the Entire Universe opens with Master of Ceremonies Idle introducing Professor Cox, who will deliver a lecture on the origins of the cosmos. His valiant attempts to explain the 138-billion-year history of the universe—including the Big Bang, the space-time continuum, fundamental particles, gravitational fields and more—are constantly interrupted by a motley crew of special guests, including popular British comedian and new host of the UK’s The Great British Bake-Off Noel Fielding, who appears as both Albert Einstein and a Higgs Bosun particle; Warwick Davis, whose jokes about his height are paired with a song lamenting Pluto’s diminished status in the solar system; and Game of Thrones’ Hannah Waddingham, the original Lady of the Lake in Spamalot, who sings about time and the speed of light backed by dancers from the Muriel Tritt School of Music and Dance.

They’re also the most powerful; their gravity is so strong it can actually capture light. And they’re the most destructive, swallowing particles, dust, gas, planets, even giant stars. Anything that falls into them vanishes… gone forever. But now, astrophysicists are coming to realize that black holes just might be integral to the structure of the universe— and our very existence. In this 2-hour special, astrophysicist and novelist Janna Levin will take viewers on a journey to the frontiers of black hole science. We will meet with the leading astronomers and physicists to discover the most cutting edge research that is helping to shed light on these shadowy monsters, and we will explore the provocative questions: Where do they come from? What’s inside them? What happens if you fall into one? And what can they tell us about the nature of space, time, and gravity?

 Buddy Holly: Rave On 9pm Friday, June 26  Also 7/29 4am

Rock ’n’ roll may have started with Elvis,

but pop music started with Buddy Holly and The Crickets. Buddy Holly: Rave On tells the story of Buddy Holly’s tragically short life and career. Told through exclusive interviews with those closest to him and young artists inspired by him, the documentary paints a picture of a man who changed the course of music. Featuring songs such as “Peggy Sue,” “Maybe Baby,” “Well Allright” and “Not Fade Away,” the program captures one of the most dramatic tales in music 60 years after Holly’s game-changing, breakthrough hit, “That’ll Be the Day.”

Among the stars in the night sky wander the eight-plus worlds of our own solar system—each home to truly awe-inspiring sights. Volcanoes three times higher than Everest, geysers erupting with icy plumes, cyclones larger than Earth lasting hundreds of years. Each of our celestial neighbors has a distinct personality and a unique story. In this five-part series, NOVA will explore the awesome beauty of the planets, including Saturn’s 175,000-mile-wide rings, Mars’ ancient waterfalls four times the size of any found on Earth, and Neptune’s winds—12 times stronger than any hurricane felt on our planet.
