Timeless Legacy  In 1928, one would not expect to find a woman artist with an easel and forty-five pound pack on her back hiking alone through the spring snow of Glacier National Park to paint. But, for almost a century women have been coming to one of the most ruggedly beautiful and culturally rich locations in Montana to capture the majesty of the landscape. This proram tells the story of these early artistic pioneers, along with four of their contemporary sisters, who share the common drive to commune with and observe nature, then paint it from their hearts. Bard in the Backcountry chronicles a summer with “Montana Shakespeare in the Parks,” a professional theater company based in Bozeman, Montana. Viewers get a behind-the-scenes look at the ten actors on tour as they cover over sixty-five hundred miles to perform Shakespeare in the rural towns of this vast region. Along the way they encounter an array of characters, many of whom have been watching Shakespeare every summer for over forty years. We learn about the teamwork required to deliver a performance every evening in a new town and how the actors are also their own drivers, roadies, make-up artists, and set builders. Bard in the Backcountry reveals the mutual impact the tour has on the lives of these young actors and the people who put in the effort to bring Shakespeare to town. This journey provides a glimpse of the relevance that classic Shakespearean theater still holds in the lives of everyday people across the region.

through to final performance, this program takes a behind-the-scenes look at a summer of Montana Shakespeare in the Parks and tells the story of Shakespeare in Montana. Airs Thursday, 7/2 at 7pm, Friday, 7/3 at 5am, Sunday, 7/5 at 10am, Monday 7/6 at 2am 4 STORY, LEF T

3 Miles An Hour  Journey into the Bob Marshall Wilderness in western Montana to meet legendary backcountry outfitter Arnold “Smoke” Elser. Elser considers “three miles an hour”—the walking speed of a horse—the best way to see and savor life. The documentary combines rare access to one of the largest wilderness areas in the lower 48 states with vintage home movies from backcountry trips and historic photographs to capture Elser’s passion for, and connection to, the outdoors. A irs Friday, 7/10 at 5am Rundown with Jackie Coffin: Medicaid Expansion in Montana: What’s Next?  The fate of Medicaid Expansion in Montana is set, for now, following the 2019 Legislative Session. But the future of federally-funded healthcare coverage is being called into question on a national level. With presidential budget cuts and pending court cases challenging the Affordable Care Act, federally-funded healthcare coverage could shrink or disappear for some Americans, including thousands in Montana. Meanwhile, Montana faces other growing health emergencies including opioid addiction and mental health treatment. Airs Sunday, 7/12 at 10am

Wild by Law and Nature: Montana’s Wilderness Study Areas  Montana Wilderness Study Act of 1977 established 9 federally protected Wilderness Study Areas in Montana to be evaluated for potential permanent wilderness designation and inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System. Forty years later, the fate of these federally protected areas remains in political limbo as wilderness and multiple-use advocates spar over the management, use and future of nearly 663,000 acres of public lands. Airs Sunday, 7/12 at 10:30am

Saving the Burg: A Story of Love, Sweat and Beers  Few towns in Montana have undergone a community comeback as striking as that of tiny Philipsburg. A deeply depressed former mining town in the 1980’s, “P-burg” has spent three decades restoring its historic downtown and building an enviable reputation as Big Sky Country’s “Comeback Kid.” A irs Thursday, 7/16 at 7pm, Sunday, 7/19 at 10am, Monday 7/20 at 2am

Evelyn Cameron: Pictures from a Worthy Life  Cameron left a life of privilege in England and found a sense of peace on the Montana prairie. With an independent spirit suited for the American West, she started her own photography business. She left behind a legacy of photographs and diary providing an intimate portrait of pioneer life rarely seen. A irs Wednesday, 7/22 at 4am

Ordeal by Fire  This program brings to life the biggest forest fire in American history. In 1910, inhabitants of the American Northwest ran up against the natural fire cycles of that harsh yet beautiful land. On the border between Idaho and Montana the Bitterroot Mountains caught fire, and on August 20 hurricane-force winds blew thousands of separate fires into one gigantic fire. For better and for worse, the fires of 1910 shaped how Americans would view wildland fires and fire protection, and their impact on our landscapes and on how we manage our lands are with us to this day. A irs Sunday, 7/26 at 10am

Remembering the Columbia Gardens  This program celebrates the now-vanished Columbia Gardens, in business from 18991973, in home movies, pictures, and firsthand accounts of people who remember the rollercoaster, the carousel, the biplanes and the cowboy swings. A irs Thursday, 7/30 at 7pm

3:00 Odd Destiny of Sergeant York How did a pacifist farmer from Tennessee become the greatest American hero of the First World War? Convinced by his pastor to enlist, Alvin York ends up fighting in Argonne and receives the highest honors, such as the Medal of Honor and Croix de Guerre, for his exploits. On the same day, not far from Argonne, the infantryman Joseph Oklahombi performs an exceptional feat of arms by taking 171 German soldiers as prisoners. Being a Native American from the Choctaw tribe in Oklahoma – who were not recognized as American citizens at that time but invited to enlist all the same – he never received the Medal of Honor. Without ever meeting, these two men become the symbol of courage that young American volunteers showed in WWI. TV-G

China: Power & Prosperity PBS NewsHour Presents WEDNESDAY, JULY 8  9PM

As the world continues to battle the deadly coronavirus pandemic, China and the United States are increasingly confrontational. Hosted by PBS NewsHour foreign affairs and defense correspondent Nick Schifrin, China: Power and Prosperity explores the future of the communist country’s relationship with the U.S., which will help determine the new international order, the dominant technology supporting the world’s communications infrastructure, and the global economy. “We began reporting this series knowing that the relationship between China and the United States will have an outsized impact on the world in which we live. We did not know that a public health emergency would redefine how the two countries interact,” said James Blue, Executive-in-Charge of PBS NewsHour’s special programming. With support from PBS and The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, PBS NewsHour conducted more than 70 on-camera interviews for this program, with reporting from China, Malaysia, Ecuador, Indonesia, Philippines, Turkey, and the United States. This special is an update to NewsHour’s ten-part series examining China’s contentious relationship with the United States that originally aired in Fall 2019.
