Locally produced programs

Backroads of Montana Not Forgotten  A De Borgia man went from western Montana lumberjack to filmmaker and, in the process, provided memories to share. It’s not possible to share a tasty artifact from Montana’s military past in Miles City—you’ll find out why. We’ll meet a Toston woman who writes songs about what cows are thinking. Learn the traditions and family ties that inspire Crow Indian artist Kevin Red Star. Airs 7/3 5pm Rumors and Ringers  An Avon man keeps the sport of horseshoe pitching alive even during the winter. Gallup City, once a boom town, still has a story to tell. In De Borgia, we explore a real “Stinky” story. We travel to West Yellowstone to meet participants in Montana’s Ski for Light program and we take a tour of the Missoula Smoke Jumper Base where firefighters are trained for the summer fire season. Airs 7/7 5:30am Making Connections  Meet Iris Dodge who was inspired to record the vanishing cowboy life in paint and poems. Spend a fun day in Butte at the annual Lineman’s Rodeo. In Jefferson City, explore the flowers, plants and trees at Tizer Gardens and Arboretum and then visit Kalispell to meet a vibrant 84-year-old woman who still teaches dance classes. Airs 7/10 5pm Hidden Treasures  Meet a Fort Benton mother and daughter who are teaming up to spread random acts of kindness. Follow Milwaukee Railroad historian John Shontz and archaeologist Erika Scheuring as they search for the Taft Cemetery. Watch a father and son with a passion for gem-cutting search for Montana sapphires near Helena. Smokestack State Park, the Washoe Theatre, and the Montana Hotel are just some of the stops in Anaconda. Airs 7/14 5:30am

Marking Passages  We watch the closing of dinosaur-digging season near Bynum, listen to a centenarian bugler pay his respects, follow a Polson man in his quest to raise the state’s largest pumpkin and recount one man’s efforts to preserve a special rock quarry near Geraldine. Airs 7/17 5pm Eureka to Big Sandy  Head to a ranch near Big Sandy that has developed a special relationship with a different breed of horse. Every Friday from Labor Day to Memorial

Day, a group of Eureka women create quilts to raise funds to maintain the Tobacco Valley Historical Village. Visit an old wagon road near Springdale that was widened and improved by convicts from the Montana State Prison. Winter brings dozens of families out to a frozen Smith Lake west of Kalispell for the Sunrisers Lions’ family ice fishing derby. Finally, take a tour of the historic Moss Mansion in Billings. Airs 7/21 5:30am

Sharp Shooters  A Great Falls woman with a sharp eye at the pool table has 100 years of stories. In Lincoln, attend a family-run, co-ed basketball tournament that keeps their late father’s memory alive. In Alberton, the woman who has patrolled the sidelines at the team’s games with her camera has snapped thousands of memories. And in Billings, the “King of the One Armed Bandits” sells and restores antique slot machines. Airs 7/24 5pm Anaconda to Comertown  Go up the slopes with a long-time ski instructor near Anaconda, discover the art of glass blowing in Townsend, visit a new monument to Native American soldiers at the Little Big Horn Battlefield in Crow Agency and attend a reunion in the nearly forgotten northeastern Montana town of Comertown. Airs 7/28 5:30am

A Stone’s Throw From Anywhere Curlers slide into Havre where we follow a team from Rudyard. Hot Spring’s Troy DeRoche began playing his Native American flutes as a way to sell them, but his music has taken him around the world. Enjoy the monthly square dance in Plains where host William Marcus tries his hand at the do-si-do. Airs 7/31 5pm

Montana AG Live Latest Animal Forage News  High quality forages lead to better, healthier and happier livestock, cleaner air and water, and reduced flooding and erosion. Happy cows and sheep make for happy producers, but knowing the best diet for your livestock can be a difficult task. Airs 7/4 11am

Montana Weed Control Association  Currently, Montana has well over 7 million acres infested with state-listed noxious weeds, and there are several new and potentially devastating invaders encroaching our borders. Certainly, noxious weeds compete

with production ag crops, but that’s just the beginning. No matter their size or growing habitat, noxious weeds can increase soil erosion, adversely affecting water quality, and fish, birds and wildlife. Airs 7/11 11am

Montana Nursery & Landscape Association  Whether it’s a shelter belt, some planting beds and a lawn, or just your little patch of peaceful green, basic questions about horticulture and landscape planning can be a challenge. We’ll take a look at the aesthetic and monetary value of landscaping, talk about correct plant selection in helping to beautify Montana’s environment without breaking your budget, and more. Airs 7/18 11am

Grown and Made in Montana Montana produces a variety of raw materials and consumer goods. Timber and mining have been a significant part of our economy for a century and a half. Montana’s cattle production enjoys the reputation of being among the best in the world, and the grains and cereals we grow in Montana end up on dinner tables in Asia, and in beer in Mexico. But, what happens when consumer demand shifts, or economic and environmental conditions change? How do producers adapt and expand, cultivating new products and accessing new markets? Airs 7/25 11am

11th & Grant with Eric Funk Tom Catmull’s Radio Static  A prominent fixture in the Missoula music scene, Tom Catmull’s Radio Static reveals a strong blend of roots, rockabilly, and rock all masterfully braided into a unique sound that is immediately engaging and carries a thought provoking punch. The powerful balance of eminent musicianship and relevant, original stories makes this group stand out amongst their peers. Tom Catmull is joined by veterans John Sporman on bass, and Travis Yost on drums. Airs 7/8 7pm; 7/10 10pm; 7/12 2am

Bob Nell  Bob Nell, solo pianist, won the coveted national Dewars Prize for solo jazz piano performance. As a brilliant composer and soloist, Bob brings his tender truths and his stunning virtuosity to the program with a show-stopping performance of original music. Airs 7/22 7pm; 7/24 10pm; 7/26 at 2am

many of whom were miners. A number of innovative ideas and technologies pioneered by early members of the Butte Ski Club were later adapted by some of the West’s more popular ski areas. Airs 7/25 10am; 7/30 noon

The Bozeman Trail  The Bozeman Trail was an offshoot of the Oregon Trail, a shortcut to the newly discovered gold fields of Montana Territory. Pioneered by John Bozeman and others beginning in 1863, the Bozeman Trail cut through the heart of Indian country. It became a flash point for a clash of cultures that would explode into warfare, destruction and tragedy. Airs 7/28 2:30am Business: Made in Montana Huckleberry Haven starts with wild, hand-picked huckleberries to create jam; they now make gourmet jellies, candies, and even bath and body care products. Montana Scene is the perfect apparel and gift brand for any outdoorsman. Beginning with a passion for glass blowing, Bill Grout founded Aspen Hot Glass; an active business in which he creates stunning glass artwork of all shapes and colors. Tiffany Perkins started her vegan cheese business, Plant Perks, in Missoula. Spika Design and Manufacturing is an elevated walkway maker that focuses on high quality and customer satisfaction. Airs 7/29 7:30pm

This program showcases two films produced by students from the Fort Peck and Fort Belknap Indian Reservations. “In This Together, We Are One” is the story of the Buffalo Unity Project at Poplar Middle School in Montana which connects students to the importance of the buffalo to the Dakota, Nakoda, and Lakota people, and to teach them that communities thrive when they are united in common purpose. “Looking Forward from Yesterday” includes reflections from elders and teens about the history and future of the Aaniiih and Nakoda Tribes of the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. Filmed and edited by students of Harlem High School, it reflects the trauma that came with Indian boarding schools and assimilation. But it’s also a statement of hope for a better future, rooted in community, cultural awareness, and the promise of a new generation of strong, creative youth. Poplar Middle School students listen to a talk by tribal elders before a traditional pipe ceremony, in a scene from “In This Together, We Are One.” COURTESY OF MAPS MEDIA INSTITUTE

Airs 7/1 1:30pm; 7/5 at 3am Saving the Burg: A Story of Love, Sweat and Beers  Few towns in Montana have undergone a community comeback as striking as that of tiny Philipsburg. A deeply depressed former mining town in the 1980’s, “P-burg” has spent three de-

cades restoring its historic downtown and building an enviable reputation as Big Sky Country’s “Comeback Kid.” Airs 7/22 noon

Before There Were Parks: Yellowstone and Glacier Through Native Eyes  For more than 12,000 years, the intermountain West’s native peoples have called the lands known as Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks “home.” This program explores modern indigenous perspectives on these great wilderness areas and explores both the cultural divide that separates modern times from the not-so-distant past. Classic Albums

FRIDAYS 9PM

Beginning in 1997 and continuing through this year, the 48 episodes of Classic Albums document pop, rock and heavy metal albums considered the best or most distinctive of well-known bands or musicians, or that exemplify a stage in the history of modern music. The series strives to give an appreciation, in a way not often available during casual listening, into album creation and production. Each episode explores the musician’s process, from conception and composition through multitrack recording and mixing, for individual tracks, as well as the way each fits into the album as a whole.
