The Grand Rescue: A True Story of the 1967 Jenny Lake Rangers Airs 7pm Thursday, August 23 Also 8/12 10am
The Grand Rescue is a story about a rescue that became legend. In 1967, on the north face of the Grand Teton, seven rescuers risked their lives to save a severely injured climber and his companion. The rescue took three harrowing days, pushed the team to the edge of their abilities, and cemented a lifelong bond. Remarkably, once safe, the injured climber publicly criticized the very men who risked their lives to save his. Looking back after 40 years, the rescuers and survivors recount the trial with a mixture of honesty and unabashed candor. It was August 22nd around 2pm when a young graduate student and his female climbing companion became stranded on a narrow ledge 13,000 feet high. A boulder had broken free and showered the climbers with rock fall leaving Gaylord Campbell with protruding compound fractures. The young national park rangers quickly went to work, relying on innate skill, instinct and trust. History was about to be made: The rescue was the first one on the feared north face—an unprecedented rescue for its time, due to the climber’s severe injuries and unknown terrain. The Grand Rescue humbles us to the majestic Grand Teton, exposes the tenuous relationship of man and the mountain, reveals the endurance of the human spirit and recounts one of the most infamous rescues of its time.

Airs 8pm Saturday, August 4 and 1pm Sunday, August 5 Also 8/21 1am This 90-minute documentary captures the remarkable, two-year, 25,000-mile attempt to retrace Marco Polo’s legendary trek from Venice, Italy to China. This illuminating epic follows two friends from Queens, New York—one photographer and one visual artist and ex-Marine—as they complete the journey by land and by sea, a feat in which all others have fallen short. Equal parts travelogue, adventure story, history trek and buddy movie, follow present-day explorers Denis Belliveau and Francis O’Donnell as they navigate deadly skirmishes and capture in Afghanistan, cross its forgotten ancient passageway to China (the first Westerners in a generation to do so), encounter the stinging sands of the Taklamakan and Gobi deserts in a Silk Road camel caravan, and live among cultures, including the expert horsemen of Mongolia.

Still Dreaming
Airs 8pm Saturday, August 11 Also 8/12 1pm; 8/28 1am This program documents a unique take on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream as performed by a group of retired actors, dancers and musicians at the Lillian Booth Actors Home, an assisted living facility, just outside New York City. These former Broadway stars (Charlotte Fairchild, Aideen O’Kelly, Robert A. Evans, Joan Stein, and Dimo Condos) embark on a journey as they stage the magical play at the urging of the home’s administrators who see this as an opportunity to boost quality of life for the residents. As the rehearsal process unfolds, the actors find themselves experiencing both the pain and exhilaration of re-immersion in their life’s work amidst the difficulties of old age. Pictured: Charlotte Fairchild as Puck.

Phelim McDermott’s production sets the comedic opera in a 1950s Coney Island carnival where the artful Don Alfonso offers Ferrando and Guglielmo a wager: he will prove to the men that their fiancés, the sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella, will be unfaithful to them under the right circumstances. The two men accept the challenge to pursue each other’s fiancé, which will require them to mask their identities. The sisters are inconsolable after Don Alfonso tells them that their fiancés have been called away to war, but their maid Despina encourages the women to find new lovers. With Despina’s help, Don Alfonso introduces the sisters to two “infatuated young friends” who are actually Guglielmo and Ferrando in disguise.

Frontline: American Patriot
Airs 9pm Tuesday, August 28 Also 8/30 3am Frontline goes inside the violent battle between a ranching family in the West and the federal government, examining how a simmering fight over land in Nevada and Oregon became deadly, invigorated a wider right-wing anti-government movement, and continues to challenge prosecutors and law enforcement. With deep access to key people on all sides of the battle, the film investigates the standoffs that propelled the Bundy family into the national spotlight and the crosshairs of the federal government, the armed right-wing groups that have rallied to their cause, and what happens next.

Samantha Brown’s Places to Love Airs Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9pm on MontanaPBS Create For more than 17 years, TV host Samantha Brown has been exploring all four corners of the world, visiting more than 260 cities in 62 countries, sharing her adventures and introducing new cultures to viewers. Now, the two-time Emmy Award-winner embarks on her next journey with her new travel series Samantha Brown’s Places to Love. Unlike a traditional travelogue show with a formulaic itinerary, Places to Love delivers decidedly refreshing and enriching travel experiences by taking viewers on a discovery of the emotional heart of travel and highlighting the people who are changing, challenging and strengthening a destination. From Brooklyn, New York and Monterey, California to Shanghai, China and Donegal in Ireland, Samantha seeks out the little-known spots and haunts where innovators and disrupters are creating a brand new travel experience. Whether it’s through food and drink, art and design, culture or adventure, at the end of each episode, viewers will have a well-curated list of new experiences that focus on not just how to visit a destination, but how to fully immerse in it. The 13-part series encourages viewers to experience the passion of people and the soul of a place in a way that only traveling can do.

Eva Hesse Airs 8pm Friday, August 31 As the wild ride of the 1960s came to a close, Eva Hesse, a 34 year-old German-born American artist was cresting the wave of a swiftly rising career. One of the few women recognized as central to the New York art scene, she had over 20 group shows scheduled for 1970 in addition to being chosen for a cover article in ArtForum Magazine. Her work was finally receiving both the critical and commercial attention it deserved. When she died in May, 1970 from a brain tumor, the life of one of that decades’ most passionate and brilliant artists was tragically cut short. Eva Hesse deepens the understanding of this extraordinary artist, not only in terms of her ground-breaking work, but also the life that provided the fertile soil for her achievements. With dozens of new interviews, high quality footage of Hesse’s artwork and a wealth of newly discovered archival imagery, the documentary not only traces Eva’s path but engages in a lively investigation into the creative community of 1960’s New York and Germany. Directed and produced by Marcie Begleiter.
