Downton Abbey Live }} Airs 7pm Sunday, August 18 In anticipation of the September 2019 premiere of the Downton Abbey feature film, Downton Abbey Live! is a nostalgic celebration of all aspects of the most successful British drama ever — the stellar cast, superb writing, spectacular locations and dazzling costumes. Downton Abbey Live! will be broadcast from New York City in front of a studio audience. Planned participants include many of the cast and crew including creator and writer, Julian Fellowes.

In addition, PBS viewers from around the country will have an opportunity to have their questions answered about the Downton Abbey series and upcoming movie — who knows what will secrets will be revealed?

Fort Peck Dam Work had just begun, and already it was the largest dam in the world. It provided hope and the prospect of a regular paycheck during the darkest days of the Great Depression. The dam was an engineering feat in a place as harsh and desolate as any on earth. Thousands of men and their families faced unforgiving conditions to build the Fort Peck Dam, a project bold in design, daring in execution and far reaching in its effects. Before There Were Parks: Yellowstone and Glacier Through Native Eyes For more than 12,000 years, the intermountain West’s native peoples have called the lands known as Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks “home.” This program explores modern indigenous perspectives on these great wilderness areas and explores both the cultural divide that separates modern times from the not-so-distant past and recent efforts by the National Park Service and native peoples to bring these disparate visions into greater harmony. Yellowstone’s splendor lies in its solitude, it’s grandness, its complexity, and it’s simplicity. Airs MontanaPBS–HD Sunday, 8/25 at 10:30am Bozeman Trail The Bozeman Trail was an offshoot of the Oregon Trail, a shortcut to the newly discovered gold fields of Montana Territory. Pioneered by John Bozeman and others beginning in 1863, the Bozeman Trail cut through the heart of Indian country. It became a flash point for a clash of cultures that would explode into warfare, destruction and tragedy.

Set against a backdrop of the sprawling western plains and stunning Rocky Mountains, this program tells a different story of U.S. western expansion and manifest destiny. A story of hope and greed, honor and disgrace, power and submission. It’s a tale filled with surprising twists and unlikely outcomes. In the end, the dynamic events that transpired during the five years of Bozeman Trail era changed this part of the American west forever. Farm to Table: Montana Made – Hops Locally-grown hops are making their way into some of the state’s microbreweries. Jake TeSelle, owner of Crookedyard Hops, returns for another look at the issues and rewards of growing hops in Montana. Bozeman Trail ruts

The Bozeman Trail }} Airs 7pm Thursday, August 29 Also 9/1 10am; 9/2 1:30am In 1865, the end of the Civil War spurred some Westward in search of new beginnings and new lives. Gold was discovered at Grasshopper Creek in July 1862, giving rise to Montana’s first gold rush and first boomtown, Bannack. In May 1863, another bonanza at Alder Gulch— about 75 miles east of Bannack. Virginia City sprung up and grew wealthy but lawless. John Bozeman was one of 10,000 people living there in the next year. Not having much luck mining, Bozeman decided to mine the miners. He and mountain man John Jacobs begin searching for a short cut from the Oregon Trail to Virginia City. The plan was to guide potential prospectors for a healthy fee of course.

They eventually find their trail, which follows long established north-south game and Indian routes and travels through prime buffalo grazing country. In July 1863, Bozeman and Jacobs guide their first wagon train on the trail.

To protect travelers along the Bozeman Trail, the U.S. Government builds and militarizes forts along the way. In 1864 four wagon trains and 1,500 people travel the Bozeman Trail to the Montana goldfields without incident.

Le Guin }} Airs 8pm Friday, August 2 Also 8/5 3am WORLD 8/4 5pm; 8/5 3am; 8/8 8am, 9am Best known for her science fiction and Earthsea fantasy series, celebrated and beloved author Ursula Kroeber Le Guin (1929–2018) wrote 21 novels, 11 volumes of short stories, four collections of essays, 12 children’s books, six volumes of poetry and four of translation during her life. This program tells the comingof-age story of the Portland, Oregon, housewife and mother of three who forever transformed American literature by bringing science fiction into the literary mainstream. Through her influential work, Le Guin opened doors for generations of younger writers like Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood, Michael Chabon and David Mitchell — all of whom appear in the film — to explore fantastic elements in their writing.

Le Guin’s struggled early in her career to get published in the overwhelmingly male and realism-dominated climate of the early 1960s.

Her first major breakthrough came with the young adult novel A Wizard of Earthsea, set in a magical archipelago inhabited by wizards and dragons. Along with groundbreaking novels like The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed, Earthsea crowned Le Guin as the queen of science fiction by the end of the decade. But as a woman and a genre writer, she still faced marginalization that hobbled her career until the last decade of her life, when she won the National Book Foundation’s lifetime achievement award and became the second living author to have their work anthologized by the Library of Congress.

2017 World Dancesport Grandslam Series }} Airs 4:30pm Sundays The best competitive dancers in the world vie for the most prestigious titles and the prize money in the world of dance. As the top dancers in the various dance styles meet up at different locations around the globe, cameras are trained on every step they take. With all their moves and stances, be it the poses they hold during the highlights of the paso doble or in the staccato action they emphasize in their tango, the couples are on a never-ending quest for excellence and ultimately a championship. Their performances are assessed by 12 experts using a revolutionary judging system which makes the entire process of adjudication more transparent for the viewer at home. Four components are considered, with two focusing on the technical aspects and two on the artistry.

The 2017 World Dancesport Grandslam Series takes the world’s best couples on a year-long journey from the first leg in Helsinki, Finland to the final showdown in Shanghai, China, with six hour-long episodes capturing their exploits.

Woodstock: Three Days That Defined a Generation }} Airs 8pm Tuesday, August 6 Also 8/8 1am, 4am WORLD 8/10 6pm, 10pm Fifty years ago, half a million young people from all walks of life journeyed from every corner of the country to a dairy farm in upstate New York for a concert unprecedented in scope and influence. Woodstock examines the tumultuous decade that led to those three historic days — years that saw the nation deeply divided by Vietnam and racial, generational and sexual politics — through the voices of those who were present for the event that would become the defining moment of the counterculture revolution.

“For three days in August, 1969, the values of ‘peace and love,’ loudly championed by the counterculture movement, were actually put to the test in the miserable conditions at Woodstock,” said director Barak Goodman.

“The more than 400,000 people who attended the festival proved that they were more than just words. For a surprising number of people, that brief encounter with sacrifice, cooperation and generosity changed their lives.”

This documentary focuses on individuals — from concert goers to security guards to performers to local residents — to expand our understanding of the event from unparalleled musical milestone, to a once-in-a-century cultural phenomena that served as a coda to the sixties and a harbinger of the decades to come, explained American Experience executive producer Mark Samels.
