forest fire in American history. In 1910, on the border between Idaho and Montana, the Bitterroot Mountains caught fire, and on August 20 hurricane-force winds blew thousands of separate fires into one gigantic fire. The newly-created Forest Service sent thousands of men to stop it. People died. Burning trains raced for the safety of tunnels, and whole towns disappeared. American Experience TUESDAY, AUGUST 24 8PM Also 8/20 noon; 8/26 1am
In the summer of 1910, an unimaginable wildfire devoured more than three million acres across the Northern Rockies, confronting the fledgling U.S. Forest Service with a catastrophe that would define the agency and the nation’s fire policy for the rest of the 20th century and beyond. THE BIG BURN provides a cautionary tale of heroism and sacrifice, arrogance and greed, hubris and, ultimately, humility in the face of nature’s frightening power. Inspired by the best-selling book by Timothy Egan. -----------------------------------Watch also, Ordeal by Fire (see listing on this page), a film by George Sibley featuring bestselling authors Stephen Pyne and Timothy Egan, airing Friday August 13 at 12 noon. She wrote an astounding 66 murder mysteries, several plays including The Mousetrap—the longest-running play of all time—and her classic works continue to be adapted for film and television. But how did a refined, upper-class British girl evolve into the queen of crime, poison, and murder? Two new specials attempt to solve this mystery, exploring the life and times of the woman who transformed crime fiction and continues to win loyal readers across the globe.

Mother’s Day SATURDAY 8/28 8:03PM Also 8/29 1pm; 8/31 3am
Vicky McClure and Anna Maxwell Martin star in this drama based on real events. Following the 1993 Warrington bomb attack which left two boys dead, a grieving family and a Dublin housewife form an unlikely alliance. On the day before Mother’s Day 1993, Colin and Wendy Parry’s lives are torn apart when their youngest son Tim is killed in a terrorist attack by the IRA in Warrington’s town centre. The attack shocks ordinary people on both sides of the Irish Sea. Sue McHugh, an unassuming and normally shy Dublin housewife, is deeply affected by the tragedy. Spurred into action by the events in Warrington and the hope that she can make a difference, Sue urges people across Ireland to demonstrate that the killings on all sides must stop. But has Sue underestimated the challenge of brokering peace in a community that has known only conflict? Wendy (Anna Maxwell Martin) and Sue (Vicky McClure) COURTESY OF BBC

Lucy Worsley’s Royal Myths & Secrets
Henry VIII’s Reformation SUNDAY 8/29 7PM Also 8/31 1am, noon
Join beloved royal historian Lucy Worsley on a journey to sort out fact from fiction about tumultuous times when radicalism and rebellion threatened Europe’s monarchies. From political earthquakes to a “mad” king, from the Tower of London to the streets of Moscow, Lucy reveals that royal history isn’t always what it seems. In this episode, Worsley investigates the inside story of the English Reformation. Was Henry VIII’s desire to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn the real reason for England’s split from Catholic Europe? Or was a secret political agenda at work? Worsley discovers that Anne Boleyn was not the scheming seductress portrayed in films and TV, but a well-educated young woman who introduced Henry to revolutionary new ideas about monarchy and a king’s relationship with God. Worsley acquaints viewers with the King’s ruthless chancellor, Thomas Cromwell, who used Henry’s love life as a smokescreen to supercharge the monarch’s power. And she investigates how the Reformation caused decades of upheaval and suffering, as hundreds of religious dissenters were persecuted, tortured and burned at the stake. Finally, Worsley charts the legacy of the Reformation, which drove a wedge between Britain and mainland Europe that persists to this day.

Host Steven Raichlen at the grill on the set of Project Fire.
Steven Raichlen’s Project Fire BEGINS THURSDAY 8/5: A NEW EPISODE EACH THURSDAY & SATURDAY AT 5PM Also Sat 4pm on Montana PBS HD Channel
Here’s a little-known fact about Steven Raichlen. His first James Beard Award-winning book wasn’t about barbecue: it was a book on healthy eating. “Steven Raichlen’s Project Fire” returns with more projects, more fire, and even more instruction on ways viewers can take their grilling to the next level. This season, Steven explores topics that are of interest to today’s grillers, including health and sustainability. Joining Steve on set are guests and innovators of live fire cooking techniques, plus in-depth exploration of topics that are of “burning” interest to today’s grillers.
