Doctors traveled to Rochester to observe, learn and even be treated themselves.

Mayo Clinic: Faith, Hope, Science  Airs 8pm Tuesday September 25 and 9pm Wednesday, September 26  Also 9/27 2am; 9/28 1am, 4am When a deadly tornado tore through their small community in 1883, the Mayos took charge of recovery efforts, enlisting the help of the nearby Sisters of Saint Francis to care for patients. Afterwards, Mother Alfred Moes, the leader of the convent, told Dr. Mayo she had a vision from God that instructed her to build a hospital, with him as its director. She believed it would become “world-renowned for its medical arts.” Blending historical narrative with contemporary patient stories, The Mayo Clinic: Faith, Hope, Science is a timely look at how one institution has met the changing demands of healthcare for 150 years—and what that can teach us about facing the challenges of patient care today. “When the Mayo Clinic began in the late 19th century, the medical community was so amazed at its success, they dubbed it ‘The Miracle in the Cornfield,’” said co-director Erik Ewers. “But as unique as Mayo may be, it’s not a miracle. It’s about incredibly determined and compassionate men and women who came together to figure out how to create a model of care that puts patients before profits.” Cover images top to bottom: During his visit, Roosevelt laid a wreath at the grave of W.W. Programs such as Montana Ag Live, History of Yellowstone and many others foster important discussion about current issues.

MONTANAPBS

Fort Peck Dam  Work had just begun, and already it was the largest dam in the world. It provided hope and the prospect of a regular paycheck during the darkest days of the Great Depression. The dam was an engineering feat in a place as harsh and desolate as any on earth. Thousands of men and their families faced unforgiving conditions to build the Fort Peck Dam, a project bold in design, daring in execution and far reaching in its effects. Airs Sunday, 9/16 at 10am

He was the first European to travel the full length of the Columbia River and his journals provide some of the earliest descriptions of what is now Montana, Idaho, British Columbia and Washington. Now, 200 years after Thompson’s greatest achievements, film maker George Sibley paints a vivid picture of a world on the brink of change and a man who helped change it, filmed on locations where it all took place. Document: Urban Renewal  A look at three different properties in Southwest Montana, each given new life through renovation and repair. The Club Moderne, in Anaconda, suffered a catastrophic fire in October of 2016. Fellow citizens pitched in to repair the extensive damage, and get the local icon back in business. Our second story highlights the renovation at the old Livingston Memorial Hospital, repurposing the space into modern apartments for low-income tenants. The last story details the refurbishment of the Rialto Theater in Bozeman. Originally built in the 1920s, this landmark had fallen into disrepair. Through extensive remodeling, it is now a vibrant space for a variety of performing arts. Airs Sunday, 9/23 at 3:20pm

The Grand Rescue: A True Story of the 1967 Jenny Lake Rangers  Airs 7pm Thursday, August 23 Also 8/12 10am

The Grand Rescue is a story about a rescue that became legend. In 1967, on the north face of the Grand Teton, seven rescuers risked their lives to save a severely injured climber and his companion. The rescue took three harrowing days, pushed the team to the edge of their abilities, and cemented a lifelong bond. Remarkably, once safe, the injured climber publicly criticized the very men who risked their lives to save his. Looking back after 40 years, the rescuers and survivors recount the trial with a mixture of honesty and unabashed candor. It was August 22nd around 2pm when a young graduate student and his female climbing companion became stranded on a narrow ledge 13,000 feet high. A boulder had broken free and showered the climbers with rock fall leaving Gaylord Campbell with protruding compound fractures. The young national park rangers quickly went to work, relying on innate skill, instinct and trust. History was about to be made: The rescue was the first one on the feared north face—an unprecedented rescue for its time, due to the climber’s severe injuries and unknown terrain. The Grand Rescue humbles us to the majestic Grand Teton, exposes the tenuous relationship of man and the mountain, reveals the endurance of the human spirit and recounts one of the most infamous rescues of its time.

Explore one of the greatest knowledge institutions in the world. The New York Public Library is a place of welcome, cultural exchange and learning. With 92 locations, the library is committed to advancing knowledge and strengthening communities. The New York Public Library is one of the great knowledge institutions of the world. Like its peers, the Library of Congress, the British Library and the Bibliotheque nationale de France, it is (1) a memory bank of humankind, an irreplaceable repository of documents of human thought and action; (2) an instrument of education and transmitter of culture and information and (3) a prime example of democracy. The Library is accessible, open to everyone and exemplifies the deeply rooted American belief in the individual’s right to know and be informed. It is one of the most democratic institutions in our society. Public libraries throughout the US are undergoing challenges to simultaneously sustain their traditional activities and concurrently develop new programs that are both related to the digital revolution and are expansions of their well-established practices. This is the first time the New York Public Library has given permission to make a documentary about this important, vast and complex institution. The New York Public Library is the dominant cultural and democratic institution in the City of New York for the following reasons: (1) the Library is open and available to everyone, (2) the richness of its collections in literature, world history, dance, film, photography and prints, (3) the diversity of its programs and (4) its usefulness and appeal to all social classes and ages. Key Largo

 Airs 8pm Saturday, September 15  Also 9/16 1pm Frank McCloud travels to a run-down hotel on Key Largo to honor the memory of a friend who died bravely in his unit during WW II. His friend’s widow, Nora Temple, and wheelchair bound father, James Temple manage the hotel and receive him warmly, but the three of them soon find themselves virtual prisoners when the hotel is taken over by a mob of gangsters led by Johnny Rocco who hole up there to await the passing of a hurricane. Mr. Temple strongly reviles Rocco but due to his infirmities can only confront him verbally. Having become disillusioned by the violence of war, Frank is reluctant to act, but Rocco’s demeaning treatment of his alcoholic moll, Gaye Dawn, and his complicity in the deaths of some innocent Seminole Indians and a deputy sheriff start to motivate McCloud to overcome his Hamlet-like inaction. Stars Humphrey Bogart, Edward G. Robinson and Lauren Bacall; John Huston directs, 1948

Document “Urban Renewal” A look at three different properties in Southwest Montana, each given new life through renovation and repair. Instead the 16-featured artists are grouped by their unique and revealing relationships to the places where they live: Chicago, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and Vancouver. Nature: Owl Power  Airs 7pm Wednesday, September 26 Also 9/28 noon; 9/30 1am

For centuries, owls have been featured in children’s books and folk tales capturing imaginations the world over. With their haunting calls and charismatic faces, these birds remain popular but mysterious because it’s rare to catch more than a glimpse of one in the wild. Unlike their cousins, the hawks, eagles and falcons, owls are the only bird of prey able to also hunt effectively at night when they have the skies to themselves. This has helped them become one of the most successful birds on earth, but the chief reason is due to their extraordinary super powers. The program follows the lives of two barn owl chicks from the moment they hatch to show their development into super-powered owls. Luna and Lily are cared for by longtime bird handlers and trainers Lloyd and Rose Buck who also raise other birds of prey in the English countryside. It takes two weeks for the chicks to open their eyes, but in just two months, they’re nearly adult barn owls and beginning their flight practice. To illustrate why owls fly slower than other birds, Lily is put to the test against a peregrine falcon and a graylag goose. The film compares their different wing shapes using a high speed camera and computer graphics to show how design affects speed. Ornithologist Graham Martin of the University of Birmingham explains that the barn owl has the largest wings in relation to its body and an overall wing design that enables it to fly slowly as it hunts, then drop on prey in a flash. Bad luck for mice and voles.

The Daniel Tiger Movie: Won’t You Be Our Neighbor? Airs on September 17, 19, and 21 at 8:30am

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, cozy and familiar, is getting BIGGER. The most-streamed show on PBS Kids is releasing its first hour-long movie, which revolves around a new family moving into the neighborhood. The transplant platypus family in the Daniel movie was inspired by the platypus family in “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” This being the 50th anniversary of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood on PBS, the movie brings children into the celebration. The opening song will be one that fans of the classic series will recognize.

In the movie, Daniel spies Rogers’ delivery man, Mr. McFeely, at the new neighbor’s house. (For those who didn’t know, Daniel Tiger is the son of Mister Rogers’ hand puppet Daniel Striped Tiger.) Chris Loggins, producer at Fred Rogers Productions, said Daniel fans will love Jodi Platypus. At age 3, she’s a year younger than Daniel. New episodes continue the week of September 17, and focus on Jodi Platypus and her family adjusting to Daniel’s neighborhood. LESSONS  How to be a good neighbor, make someone feel welcome and adjusting after a

big change. BONUS  Two new episodes featuring Jodi Platypus will debut on Tuesday, Sept. 18 and Thursday, Sept. 20. FUN FACT  The name of the character Jodi Platypus was named after after Joanne Rogers (the wife of Fred Rogers). When the creators of the show asked to name Daniel’s playmate after her, Joanne said, name her Jodi because that’s what a good friend called her.

Samantha Brown’s Places to Love  Airs Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9pm on MontanaPBS Create For more than 17 years, TV host Samantha Brown has been exploring all four corners of the world, visiting more than 260 cities in 62 countries, sharing her adventures and introducing new cultures to viewers. Now, the two-time Emmy Award-winner embarks on her next journey with her new travel series Samantha Brown’s Places to Love. Unlike a traditional travelogue show with a formulaic itinerary, Places to Love delivers decidedly refreshing and enriching travel experiences by taking viewers on a discovery of the emotional heart of travel and highlighting the people who are changing, challenging and strengthening a destination. From Brooklyn, New York and Monterey, California to Shanghai, China and Donegal in Ireland, Samantha seeks out the little-known spots and haunts where innovators and disrupters are creating a brand new travel experience. Whether it’s through food and drink, art and design, culture or adventure, at the end of each episode, viewers will have a well-curated list of new experiences that focus on not just how to visit a destination, but how to fully immerse in it. The 13-part series encourages viewers to experience the passion of people and the soul of a place in a way that only traveling can do.
