When Ronald Reagan nominated Sandra Day O’Connor as the Supreme Court’s first female justice in 1981, the announcement dominated the news. Time Magazine’s cover proclaimed “Justice At Last,” and she received unanimous Senate approval. Born in 1930 in El Paso, Texas, O’Connor grew up on a cattle ranch in Arizona in an era when women were expected to become homemakers. After graduating near the top of her class at Stanford Law School, she could not convince a single law firm to interview her, so she turned to volunteer work and public service. A Republican, she served two terms in the Arizona state senate, then became a judge on the state court of appeals. During her 25 years on the Supreme Court, O’Connor was the critical swing vote on cases involving some of the 20th century’s most controversial issues, including race, gender and reproductive rights — and she was the tiebreaker on Bush v. Gore. Forty years after her confirmation, this biography recounts the life of a pioneering woman who both reflected and shaped an era.

A group of Eureka women create quilts to raise funds to maintain the Tobacco Valley Historical Village. An old wagon road near Springdale was widened and improved by convicts from the Montana State Prison. Winter brings dozens of families out to a frozen Smith Lake west of Kalispell for the Sunrisers Lions’ family ice fishing derby. Finally, tour the historic Moss Mansion in Billings. Fort Peck to Ovando Meet Pearl Nickels who, in her 90s, still works every day on the ranch near Fort Peck. Learn about gumbo—a volcanic clay that covers everything it touches and makes getting around a sticky mess. St. Mary of the Assumption has served farmers and miners in the Ruby Valley for more than a century. It takes a special effort to keep the the Monture Guard station north of Ovando in working condition. Finally, discover the Blackfoot Pathways: Sculpture in the Wild Park near Lincoln. The Rundown with Beth Saboe: Enemy On Our Shores In 2016, one of the most devastating invasive species in the world was detected in a handful of Montana waterbodies for the first time. The evidence of non-native mussel larvae in Tiber and Canyon Ferry reservoirs prompted a statewide emergency response as stakeholders rushed to combat the aquatic enemy. The tiny invasive species can inflict colossal destruction and scientists and lawmakers agree that an infestation of zebra or quagga mussels is the single greatest threat to Montana’s lakes and rivers. Beth Saboe examines the potential economic and ecological devastation the aquatic pest can cause by fouling boats, docks, beaches and clogging hydroelectric intake systems and irrigation pipes. We’ll meet a northeastern Montana woman who appreciates the value of hard work. Pearl Nickels is now in her 90s, and she still works every day on the ranch near Fort Peck. Discover more about her colorful past with interesting jobs around rural Montana. We examine a substance that’s been stopping Montanans in their tracks for years, from present-day motorists to the state’s earliest explorers. It’s not ordinary mud. It’s gumbo, a volcanic clay that covers everything it touches and makes getting around a sticky mess. St. Mary of the Assumption serves a wide variety of churchgoers in the small town of Laurin. Built following Montana’s gold rush, farmers and miners in the Ruby Valley of southwestern Montana have used the distinctive sandstone church for their spiritual needs for more than a century. The Monture Guard station north of Ovando gets heavy use year-round. So it takes a special effort the keep the historic cabin and barn in working condition. Backroads finds a group of retired smokejumpers fit for the job; and they get a little something out of it, too. Backroads of Montana host William Marcus tells viewers the story of the Blackfoot Pathways: Sculpture in the Wild Park near Lincoln. Sculptors from around the world have been invited to create site-specific works of art celebrating the rich environmental, industrial and cultural heritage of the Blackfoot Valley.

Trains That Changed the World SUNDAYS AT NOON

This series reveals how four iconic, British-built trains revolutionized rail travel, and inspired incredible railway projects all over the world.

Speed 9/5 noon Also 9/9 1pm; 9/10 5am The Flying Scotsman, built in 1923, was the first train to break the 100 miles per hour barrier. Engineers around the world were inspired to design and use trains for high-speed transport.

Cities 9/12 noon Also 9/16 1pm; 9/17 5am The London Underground, in 1863, changed the way we get around cities forever. Ingenious technology such as electrified rails and underground tunnels set an example for other cities to follow.

Industry 9/19 noon Also 9/23 1pm; 9/24 5am Starting with Stephenson’s Rocket in 1829, British engineers became obsessed with finding the fastest and most powerful engine capable of hauling raw materials.

Leisure 9/26 noon Also 9/30 1pm; 10/1 5am Legendary trains such as the Flying Dutchman and the Cornish Riviera Express took passengers to seaside resorts, ushering in an era of luxury and sleeper carriages.
