Is collecting a hobby, a passion or just a conversation starter? We’ll let you decide in our Backroads of Montana Collection Special. Sonia Tetley, of Columbia Falls, started the trend when we profiled her door knob collection. After that we visited doll collections, antler collections and handkerchief collections. Along the way we got to know the collectors. We met people who collect sewing machines, beer memorabilia and natural fibers. In Kalispell we met a man who collects antique telephones. Lou Adler, of Billings, is considered “The King of the One Armed Bandits.” In Winifred, we followed a young boy through what may be the world’s largest collection of Tonka toys. And in Three Forks we met a man who collects Montana stories for his weekly magazine column. Those collections and more on this Backroads special.
Rescan Your TV Many broadcast TV stations across Montana are moving to new frequencies this fall. If you watch television using an over-the-air antenna, it is a good idea to perform the channel rescan function on your TV. This is especially important if you have noticed a channel that has gone away from your normal lineup. To learn more about television stations moving to new frequencies, visit www.tvanswers.org

Described as an extended symphonic tone poem, George Gershwin’s 1928 composition “An American in Paris” was commissioned by conductor Walter Damrosch and rapidly became one of his most famous compositions. The 1951 MGM film starring Gene Kelly was inspired by Gershwin’s score and became one of the studio’s most acclaimed and famous movie musicals, winning six Academy Awards. In 2015, Paris finally came “home” to Broadway in a thrilling new stage adaptation of the film, directed and choreographed by dance wunderkind Christopher Wheeldon, which earned four Tony Awards. Happily for Broadway, dance and Gershwin fans, the Broadway production makes its television debut on Great Performances with its original stars, Tony nominees Robert Fairchild and Leanne Cope.

A “content moderator” in Manila, one of the many hired by Silicon Valley to monitor online content. INDEPENDENT LENS
The Cleaners Airs 9pm Monday, November 12 Also 11/14 1am
At their inception, social media networks like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter claimed to be creating a boundless, borderless community where unfettered communication would lead to greater freedom and understanding. But the universal pervasiveness of these sites also affords an easy platform for those seeking to spread something more than just snapshots of their vacation. Misleading facts posing as news, unsettling images, and radical opinions are now so rampant on social media that they are shaping elections, worsening political divides and sparking sporadic acts of violence around the world. Through interviews with Silicon Valley leaders, The Cleaners reveals the industry’s little-known secret: a set of rules, criteria and processes by which these companies monitor the material posted to their sites—a job carried out by people known as “content moderators.” And while the policies on what constitutes permissible content are written in Silicon Valley, the global headquarters for content moderation is in the city of Manila in the Philippines. There, a vast army of young people are employed as “digital scavengers,” moderating thousands upon thousands of troubling images and videos during the course of a ten-hour shift. The Cleaners delves into the lives of five of these content moderators, uncovering the reality of their often-traumatic work. While most people agree that the most troubling of these images should be removed, some of the deleted pictures include legitimate artistic expression as well as documentation of actual events in places cut off from the media.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Airs 8pm Monday, November 19 Also 11/21 4:30am The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor salutes Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Louis-Dreyfus earned worldwide acclaim for her portrayal of Elaine Benes in the hit NBC series Seinfeld, and as Christine Campbell in the CBS hit comedy The New Adventures of Old Christine. She currently stars in, and executive produces, the HBO series Veep. Between all shows combined, she has received 11 Emmy awards (six consecutively for Veep) with 24 nominations, a Golden Globe award, nine Screen Actors Guild awards which makes her the most decorated actor in the history of the SAG awards, three Television Critics Association awards, five American Comedy Awards, a Peabody Award, and the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy. She has broken the record for the most Emmy’s won by a single performer, as well as the most consecutive wins for a single role (Veep.) The Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor recognizes individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist, and creator of characters, Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective on social injustice and personal folly. He revealed the great truth of humor when he said, “against the assault of laughter nothing can stand.” Julia Louis-Dreyfus is the 21st recipient of The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

Dogs in the Land of Lions Airs 7pm Wednesday, November 21 Also 11/23 3am; 11/25 1am
Filmed over two years by cinematographer Kim Wolhuter, Nature takes viewers into the heart of an African wild dog family. When lions kill her mate, a wild dog mother called Puzzles suddenly must raise two generations of pups all on her own without the help of a pack. Witness the loyalty and selflessness that sets wild dogs apart from other large, social carnivores in this deeply intimate portrayal of motherhood. But in this unforgiving Zimbabwe wilderness, it turns out the top dogs are the big cats—lions are the wild dogs’ ultimate enemies. The young dogs provide some light-hearted moments while discovering the world around them, but as they grow up, they must face these eternal enemies on their journey to independence.

Television Montana (TVMT) to become Montana Public Affairs Network (MPAN) The Montana Public Affairs Network (MPAN) premieres November 1st, 2018. The channel formerly known as TVMT (Television Montana) becomes MPAN to reflect the channel’s evolving focus towards expanding services to the citizens of Montana beyond the live, unedited, non-partisan gavel-togavel coverage of the Legislative Branch. Viewers will notice a new look and logo for the channel that continues to provide the coverage citizens have come to rely on while expanding civic educational programming offerings into the future. Produced by the Montana Legislative Services Division of the Montana State Legislature, in partnership with Montana PBS, MPAN is a statewide service reaching thousands of homes in over 225 communities throughout Montana. In addition to the free over-the-air broadcast as part of the programming services offered by Montana PBS, virtually every cable service in the state also carries MPAN. MPAN provides the video for the Montana Legislature’s Live streaming service online at leg.mt.gov; and viewers can also engage with the service through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (coming soon) and on the web at leg.mt.gov/mpan.

In Mexico City, the Circo orchestra gets a bad case of the hiccups, so Carmen finds a Mariachi band to fill in, causing Luna to break into wild dancing!
Let’s Go Luna!
Premiers November 21, MontanaPBS-HD 8am & 2:30pm Monday–Friday; MontanaPBS-Kids 5pm Monday–Friday Let’s Go Luna! follows the adventures of three friends – Leo, a wombat from Australia; Carmen, a butterfly from Mexico; and Andy, a frog from the U.S. – as they traverse the globe with their parents’ traveling performance troupe, “Circo Fabuloso.” At each of the Circo’s stops, Luna the Moon, voiced by Judy Greer, guides the trio as they get to know the local region and its people. The gang’s adventures take them through cities around the globe – from London to Cairo to Beijing – where they explore the food, music, art, architecture and other features that make each place distinctive. Episodes end with the kids back at the Circo Fabuloso and Luna back in the sky, with a reminder that there’s always more to see, learn and experience in every place they visit. PM
COOK’S COUNTRY features the best regional home cooking in the country and relies on the same practical, no-nonsense food approach that has made Cook’s Country magazine so successful. COOK’S COUNTRY is where family-friendly recipes from every corner of America are re-imagined for home cooks everywhere. In season 11, the series uncovers blue-ribbon regional specialties from across the U.S., including North Carolina dipped fried chicken, New Jersey crumb buns, Detroit-style pizza, Oregon blackberry pie, and more. The series also tackles classic American fare in need of a makeover such as fettuccine with butter and cheese, fish and chips, and boneless rib roast with Yorkshire pudding Au jus, just to name a few. Jack Bishop challenges hosts Bridget Lancaster and Julia Collin Davison to live tastings of kitchen staples like chocolate ice cream, extra sharp cheddar cheese and black tea, while Adam Reid reveals the test kitchen’s top choices for equipment, including paring knives, paper towels and non-stick skillets.

Safe Enough? Seatbelts in School Busses Airs 7pm Wednesday, November 19 Also 11/21 2:30am; 11/21 noon Fifty years after the Federal Government mandated seatbelts in all passenger cars, seatbelts are still not required on all school buses. Why? Would school buses be safer with them? “Safe Enough?” explores the answers to these questions. Interviews with crash experts, lawmakers and school officials takes viewers through the evolving debate over seatbelts on buses. “Safe Enough?” mines public record, testimony and crash investigations. It details how a great safety record and concerns over cost have deterred efforts to add seatbelts year after year in legislatures all across the nation. The documentary also follows a movement for change rising from parents and lawmakers, punctuated by recent surprising moves from the federal agencies that have always tiptoed around the issue. In the end, “Safe Enough?” reveals decades of well-meaning opposition and complacency and their tragic consequences.
