Set against the harsh backdrop of the Arctic, Nature: Snow Bears is a dramatized story based on the extraordinary adventures and life-changing journey of newborn polar bear cubs as they leave the safety of their den for the first time. Bravely led by their mother, the cubs must make the perilous 400-mile trek to the sea to feed. Encountering many dangers and adventures along the way—marauding male bears ready to kill, extreme weather, Arctic foxes, walruses, narwhal, snowdrifts and ice cracks—they undertake an epic survival challenge. These cubs are rarely seen in their natural habitat, and this is a unique glimpse into their world. Kate Winslet narrates. The Beatles in Washington DC, February 1964.
The Beatles: Eight Days a Week—The Touring Years Airs 6:30pm Saturday, December 8 This program is based on the first part of The Beatles’ career (1962-1966)—the period in which they toured and captured the world’s acclaim. The film explores how John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr came together to become this extraordinary phenomenon, “The Beatles.” It reveals their inner workings—how they made decisions, created their music and built their collective career together—all the while, exploring The Beatles’ extraordinary and unique musical gifts and their remarkable, complementary personalities. The film focuses on the time period from the early Beatles’ journey in the days of The Cavern Club in Liverpool to their last concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco in 1966. The Beatles began touring Europe in late 1963 after an extraordinary arrival on the British scene in 1961 and ’62. However, it was their much-heralded “Ed Sullivan Show” appearance on February 9, 1964 that caused The Beatles’ popularity to explode. By June, the band had commenced their first world tour and continued on a relentless schedule for two subsequent years. By the time the band stopped touring in August of 1966, they had performed 166 concerts in 15 countries and 90 cities around the world. The cultural phenomenon their touring helped create, known as “Beatlemania,” was something the world had never seen before and laid the foundation for the globalization of culture.

Apollo astronauts and engineers tell the inside story of Apollo 8, the first manned mission to the moon. The U.S. space program suffered a bitter setback when Apollo 1 ended in a deadly fire during a pre-launch run-through. In disarray, and threatened by the prospect of a Soviet Union victory in the space race, NASA decided upon a radical and risky change of plan: turn Apollo 8 from an earth-orbit mission into a daring sprint to the moon while relying on untried new technologies. Suddenly everything hinged on Apollo 8. Fifty years after the historic mission, the Apollo 8 astronauts and engineers recount the feats of engineering that paved the way to the moon.

Neil Diamond: Hot August Night III Airs 9:30pm Sunday, December 1 Also 12/3 3am; 12/4 12:30pm In August 2012, legendary singer-songwriter Neil Diamond made a triumphant return to the celebrated Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. This magical evening celebrated the 40th anniversary of the original multiplatinum-selling Hot August Night collection that was recorded at the same venue in 1972. Diamond’s renowned musical prowess and skill as a live performer are in full evidence in this concert. Of his 2012 shows at The Greek, Billboard Magazine said: “His voice remains powerful and accurate; he reaches towards the baritone register for emphasis, just as he did in the 70s . . . he never falters in delivering every line with conviction.” Throughout his illustrious and wide-ranging career, Neil Diamond has sold over 130 million albums worldwide and has dominated the charts for more than five decades with 38 Top 40 singles and 16 Top 10 albums. He has achieved record sales with 40 Gold albums, 21 Platinum albums and 11 Multi-Platinum albums.
