 Iconic Women of Country THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10  9:30PM

Open up the music vaults and take a look at legendary female artists, their stories and songs, and why they’ve stood the test of time. A love letter to the women of Nashville, the program pays tribute to 14 icons of country music — Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Brenda Lee and more — with heartfelt stories from ten contemporary artists, including Trisha Yearwood, Wynonna Judd and Kathy Mattea. We got to know these legendary women through their songs — and then fell in love with them. They told stories and sang songs that spoke to their audiences — women whose lives weren’t always easy, but who could relate to the joys, heartaches, struggles and triumphs reflected in the music. Rarely headliners, these “girl singers,” as the industry often referred to them, were usually the only female performers on the bill. Iconic Women of Country puts the spotlight on their stories. Opinion: Childhood Vaccines

In the 1970s, five young men from the University of Montana came blazing out of the chutes, flailing away at banjos, mandolins, strumming guitars, thwapping the bass, and kicking out drum beats like wild men — and Montanans were ready to party. Their rousing mix of music defied category, generations, social strata, and even the contentious politics of the times. Musically gifted, flashing wry, bona-fide smiles, and unable to suppress an abundance of hormones, these fellas calling themselves the Mission Mountain Wood Band helped fashion an extended family that endures to this day. This documentary recounts the spirited journey Rob Quist, Steve Riddle, Terry Robinson, Christian Johnson and Greg Reichenberg made together as the Mission Mountain Wood Band.

Barns are the centerpiece of any farm or ranch. There are more than 6000 historic barns in Montana, but that number is rapidly falling. This show follows the Brouwer family, near Manhattan, as they struggle with the cost and complication of fixing the roof on their barn. During their journey to repair the barn, this program also features Montana families from the mountains of the southwest to the prairies of the northeast as they try to maintain their historic barns. There are even some quick visits to some of Montana’s more unusual barns. Ultimately, they all have one thing in common. Their personal stories reflect the meaning and nostalgia of these beautiful buildings.

Butte, America recounts the sometimes glorious, often sorrowful, but always fascinating story of Butte, Montana, the most lucrative hard rock mining town in United States history; a place known as “the Richest Hill on Earth,” “the town that plumbed and electrified America” and “the Pittsburgh of the West.” In this copper-mining metropolis, the Industrial Revolution collided with the romance of the frontier, corporate capitalism battled organized labor and the country’s ever-increasing appetite for metals laid waste to land and water, yielding vast fortunes for the copper barons and a tragic environmental and economic legacy for the people of Butte.
