Worn by everyone from presidents to supermodels, farmers to rock stars, they’re more than just a pair of pants—America’s tangled past is woven deeply into the indigo fabric. From their roots in slavery to the Wild West, youth culture, the civil rights movement, rock and roll, hippies, high fashion and hip-hop, jeans are the fabric on which the history of American culture and politics are writ large. The American Diplomat TUESDAY 2/15  8PM  Also 2/17 noon; 2/19 mdnt

At the height of the Cold War, the U.S. State Department—known as “pale, male and Yale”—remained one of the last agencies to desegregate. This program tells the story of the fight for inclusion in American diplomacy through the lives of three African American ambassadors: Edward R. Dudley, Terence Todman and Carl Rowan. Tasked with representing the best of American ideals abroad while facing discrimination at home, each would push past racial barriers to high-ranking appointments and create a lasting impact on the content and character of the Foreign Service. Explore the life, career, art and legacy of this singer of classical music and spirituals. Best known for her performance at the legendary Freedom Concert on April 9, 1939, Anderson, in a bold protest against racial intolerance, sang before a diverse crowd on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., after being denied use of Constitution Hall by the Daughters of the American Revolution. In that moment, Anderson transformed into a symbol for the nascent civil rights movement, even inspiring a 10-year-old Martin Luther King, Jr., who listened on the radio. Opera singer Marian Anderson stands in front of the statue of Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., the site of her memorable Easter Sunday concert in 1939. Montana AG Live Alternative Biological Weed Control  For years, chemical herbicides have been used in production agriculture and on our home lawns and gardens to control unwanted weeds. These controls can work well, but there’s always the possibility of waning effectiveness over years of reapplication and adaptation, and there are some health concerns with many of these chemical agents. One solution is biologic control: using other living organisms, such as insects, nematodes or bacteria to reduce weed populations.  Airs 2/6 11am

Controlling Pesky Critters  Moles and voles, gophers, skunks, raccoons, and many other pests can seem like a curse. The damage they do to turf, ornamentals, and flowers, along with the loss of fruits and vegetables can be a small, but annoying problem, but these things can also amount to a lot of time and expense.  Airs 2/13 11am

Labor Crunch in Montana Ag  It takes a whole lot of people to get Montana’s agricultural products into the hands of the final consumer. Ranch hands, seasonal labor on harvest crews, agrichemical drivers, workers in the livestock auction yards and feed

stores, implement dealers and technicians, veterinary technicians, long-haul transport drivers and many others all play a role in the process. Over the last year or so, we’ve all seen examples of changes in wages and an unsettled labor market in Montana.  Airs 2/20 11am ----------------------------------------

Or Perish in the Attempt  Using the best medical knowledge of 1803, Captains Meriwether Lewis & William Clark were the physicians for the Corps of Discovery expedition. Before the expedition departed, Benjamin Rush, a leading American doctor of the time, gave Lewis a two-week crash course in medicine, the best available at the time. With no knowledge of bacteria, viruses, parasites, antisepsis, or even how many of the internal organs functioned, Lewis & Clark doctored themselves, their men, Sacagawea, her baby, and the native peoples they visited. Throughout the three years, 1803-1806, of wilderness travel, they treated snakebites, STDs, dysentery, frostbite, dislocated joints, gunshot, ax gashes, mental illness, and more. Remarkably, in spite of the relatively poor medical care, all but one member of the company returned home. Airs 2/17 7pm

The roar of passing semi-trucks filled the air as twelve-year-old Bryon Wilson stood on a snowy hillside near Butte, Montana. His brother Bradley watched as he went flying down the hillside on his skis toward the freeway, hurling himself off a homemade jump. The jumping sessions were a frequent evening occurrence for the Wilsons as this was the only way for them to train acrobatic maneuvers key to the sport of freestyle skiing. It was hard work and took commitment from the whole family, but this is the Montana way. Two decades prior, Stevensville, Montana resident Eric Bergoust tested himself on homebrew jumps away from the watchful eyes of the ski patrol at the Lost Trail ski area near Darby. These were the moments that defined the trajectory of Montana freestyle skiers’ as they launched a rich legacy earning their place among the world’s best on Freestyle’s biggest stages. Montana freestyle skiers are the mavericks of the sport. They have achieved success through sheer determination Derived from thrilling international competitions, compelling home videos and original cinematography, Mavericks tells the fascinating, timeless story of Montana’s untold freestyle skiing legacy.

Owned: A Tale of Two Americas 2/7 9PM Also 2/9 1am

Is the “American Dream” of home ownership a false promise? While the government’s postwar housing policy created the world’s largest middle class, it also set America on two divergent paths—one of perceived wealth and the other of systematically defunded, segregated communities.

Bulletproof 2/14 9PM Also 2/16 1am

What is the cost of feeling safe? In an era of mass shootings, lockdown drills and teacher firearms training are as much a part of life as homecoming dances and basketball practice. Take a provocative look at fear, violence, and what Americans will do to feel safe in schools.

Apart 2/21 9PM Also 2/23 1am

Since the beginning of the War on Drugs, the number of women in U.S. prisons has grown drastically. The majority are mothers. Three unforgettable formerly incarcerated mothers, jailed for drug-related charges, fight to overcome alienation—and a society that labels them “felons”—to readjust to life with their families.
