Last Days in Vietnam Airs 8pm Tuesday, April 28 Also airs 4/30 1am, 4am During the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War, as the North Vietnamese Army closed in on Saigon, the South Vietnamese resistance crumbled. The United States had only a skeleton crew of diplomats and military operatives still in the country. With a communist victory inevitable and the U.S. readying to withdraw, many Americans on the ground worried their South Vietnamese allies and friends faced imprisonment or death at the hands of the approaching North Vietnamese. With the clock ticking and the city under fire, a number of heroic Americans took matters into their own hands, engaging in unsanctioned and often makeshift operations in a desperate effort to save as many South Vietnamese as possible. Nature: Animal Homes Animals, like humans, need a place they can call home to provide a safe and stable place to raise a family, but they go about building it in entirely different ways. Whether it is a bird’s nest, bear den, beaver lodge or spider web, these are homes of great complexity, constructed from a wide range of natural as well as man-made materials. This three-part series investigates just how animals build their remarkable homes around the globe and the intriguing behaviors and social interactions that take place in and around them.
The Nest 7pm Wednesday, April 8 · Also airs 4/10 3am; 4/12
1:08am; 4/13 noon Bird nests come in all shapes and sizes, crafted from a diversity of materials, including fur, grasses, leaves, mosses, sticks and twigs, bones, wool, mud and spider silk. Quite a few contain man-made materials — twine, bits of wire, even plastic bags. Each is a work of art, built with just a beak! All over the world, birds in the wild arrive at diverse nesting grounds to collect, compete for, reject, steal and begin to build with carefully selected materials, crafting homes for the task of protecting their eggs and raising their young.
Location, Location, Location 7pm Wednesday, April 15 · Also airs 4/17 3am; 4/19

Ovenbird in nest “blueprint”
1:13am; 4/20 noon Finding a good base of operations is key to successfully raising a family. One must find the right stream or tree, the right building materials, neighbors and sometimes tenants. In the wild, every home is a unique DIY project, every head of household a designer and engineer. Cameras chart the building plans and progress of beavers, tortoises, hummingbirds and woodrats, examining layouts and cross sections, evaluating the technical specs of their structures, documenting their problem-solving skills. Animal architecture provides insights into animal consciousness, creativity and innovation.
Animal Cities 7pm Wednesday, April 22 · Also airs 4/24 3am; 4/26
1:07am; 4/27 noon For some animals, living in the midst of huge colonies of their own kind is the most secure and rewarding housing arrangement. Icelandic puffins form nesting colonies of more than a million, providing shared information about food sources and reducing the odds of attacks on individual birds. But colonies are useful for predators, too. Social spiders in Ecuador work together to capture prey 20 times the size an individual might subdue on its own. For others, communal living provides multigenerational care-giving options or the opportunity to build enormous cities like the acre-wide multi-millioncitizen colonies built by leaf cutter ants in Costa Rica, or Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, built entirely by tiny corals.

Power Brokers It’s arguably one of Montana’s most tragic stories. It led to the demise of Montana Power, the state’s only Fortune 500 Company, and it pushed power prices into the stratosphere. In this documentary, Montana PBS investigates the sources of the deregulation movement and the subsequent power crisis. Fish Between the Falls Ten thousand years ago Kootenai people painted pictures of white sturgeon on the rocks above the lake where they lived. These impressive fish, the largest and one of the oldest in North America, were an important part of the tribe’s diet and the inspiration for their elegant sturgeonnosed canoes. Now, dikes and dams have changed the river system so much that sturgeon no longer successfully reproduce. But the people whose culture is bound up with these fish and the people who control the river today are working together to restore the Kootenai River White Sturgeon to their ancestral home. Airs Sunday, 4/26 at 10am
4/11 5pm · Singing in the Wires The 50 students at Greenfield School in Fairfield are energetic and bright. One reason for their success is a tasty lunch program. We’ll spend a day with Lunch Lady Salley Young as she prepares a special meal that’s 100 percent Montana made. In Kalispell, we switch into the world of antique phones, with a man whose collecting began with his career as an installer with the phone company. His spirit comes through as we tag along on a fishing trip on the Missouri River. Next is a tour of Rock City near Valier, a sandstone metropolis of hoodoos carved by Two Medicine River. The show profiles Chontay Standing Rock, a student at Stone Child College on the Rocky Boy Reservation, who has a unique approach to American Indian songs. He adds some English words and a striking stage presence to put his own spin on traditional music. And in Deer Lodge Backroads visits retired rancher, Gene Hensen, whose unlikely collection of home appliances grew from necessity. William Marcus hosts the program from the Fergus County Courthouse in Lewistown. 4/30 7pm · Backroads of Montana: Music and Memories The Backroads crew takes us along on visits to the Accordion Festival in Philipsburg, the Ross Cedars in Northwest Montana, a bucking bronco school in Arlee and historic Mann Gulch near Helena. Invisible Universe Revealed Airs 8pm Wednesday, April 22
Also airs 4/24 1am, 4am, noon; 4/26 12:09am Twenty-five years ago, NASA launched one of the most ambitious experiments in the history of astronomy: the Hubble Space Telescope. In honor of Hubble’s landmark anniversary, NOVA tells the remarkable story of the telescope that forever changed our understanding of the cosmos and our place in it. But amazingly, when the telescope first sent images back to earth, it seemed that the entire project was a massive failure; a one-millimeter engineering blunder had turned the billion-dollar telescope into an object of ridicule. It fell to five heroic astronauts in a daring mission to return Hubble to the cutting edge of science. NOVA hears from the scientists and engineers on the front line who tell the amazing Hubble story as never before. This single telescope has helped astronomers pinpoint the age of the universe, revealed the birthplace of stars and planets, advanced our understanding of dark energy and cosmic expansion, and uncovered black holes lurking at the heart of galaxies. For more than a generation, Hubble’s stunning images have brought the beauty of the heavens to millions, revealing a cosmos richer and more wondrous than we ever imagined. Join NOVA for the story of this magnificent machine and its astonishing discoveries.

26 MONTANAPBS APRIL 2015
YOU MADE IT HAPPEN Our sincerest gratitude for all you do! We just completed another successful pledge drive and would like to thank everyone who provided support. Your generous contributions help us continue to air programs that celebrate the beauty of Montana and our independent spirit. Programs that teach us and take us places we have never been before. Most importantly, they are programs that are made available for everyone to experience. We know that a pledge drive can interrupt your regular routine but we hope that you were able to enjoy a concert you would be otherwise unable to attend or maybe you were able to explore a new part of the state from the comfort of your own home. We are sincerely grateful to everyone who pledged during the March drive.

Are you currently a sustaining member of MontanaPBS? Do you want to make donating even easier? Consider switching your payment method from your credit card to your bank account. Why switch? 1. Credit Cards expire. When they expire we have to send you extra mail asking for updated information. More mail means less of your donation is going to the programs you love. 2. Credit Card numbers can be stolen. When you receive a new card we can no longer process the old one which results in more mail to you and an interruption in your monthly program guide. If you decide to switch, you can receive a set of notecards which includes our special 30th anniversary edition print “Television Worth Watching.”

Kenny James Miller Band Airs 7pm Thursday, April 23
Also airs 4/25 9:45pm; 4/27 2am Enjoy the powerful Blues-Rock trio, Kenny James Miller Band’s original, high energy music. The potency of a large rock band fits into the hands of three accomplished musicians; Ken Sederdahl on lead guitar and vocals, Mark Cornett on bass, and Mark Miller on drums. Growing up in the late 60s and 70s, Ken has always had a love and feel for the blues. His influences include SRV, Robin Trower, Jimi Hendrix, Gary Moore, and Warren Haynes. Ken masters both the technique and feel of old school blues, bringing the classic sound to his original works. Mark Cornett’s musical roots stem from progressive rock, metal and funk. His love for the bass started at age 9, mimicking the bass lines of Geddy Lee, Steve Harris, and John Paul Jones, while growing up in the isolated mountains of northwest Montana. Mark was awarded “Best Blues Bassist” by the Inland Empire Blues Society in 2012 and 2013. During his travels, Mark Miller played many different styles of music in Montana and Oregon, California and Washington. Eventually the mountains of Montana drew him back to Kalispell where he currently resides. The improvisational nature of the group makes it a good fit for Mark’s drumming style.
