The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song is named in honor of the legendary George and Ira Gershwin. This award recognizes the profound and positive effect of popular music on the world’s culture. With a career that spans six decades, Willie Nelson’s music pushes genre boundaries and his lyrics give voice to America’s heartland. He put his imprint forever on country music and introduced it to new audiences by expanding music’s avenues in the 1970s to create “outlaw country.” He has continually broadened his musical language, crossing into jazz, blues, folk, rock and Latin styles. A guitar virtuoso with a unique voice, Nelson is an artist whose work continues to inspire new musicians of diverse genres. The event features performances by Nelson, as well as Edie Brickell, Leon Bridges, Rosanne Cash, Ana Gabriel, Jamey Johnson, Alison Krauss, Raul Malo of The Mavericks, Neil Young, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Buckwheat Zydeco and past Gershwin Prize honoree Paul Simon.

The Mine Wars 8pm Tuesday, January 26 Also 1/28 1am, 4am At the dawn of the 20th century, coal was the fuel that powered the nation. Yet few Americans thought much about the men who blasted the black rock from underground and hauled it to the surface. The Mine Wars tells the overlooked story of the miners in the mountains of southern West Virginia—native mountaineers, African American migrants, and European immigrants—who came together in a protracted struggle for their rights. Decades of violence accompanied their attempts to form a union, culminating in the Battle of Blair Mountain in 1921, the largest armed insurrection since the Civil War. The West Virginia mine wars raised profound questions about what freedom and democracy meant to working people in an industrial society. Featuring extensive archival footage, including a recently discovered newsreel of the aftermath of the Battle of Blair Mountain, and interviews with authors, historians, and descendants of miners, the film is executive produced by Mark Samels, produced and directed by Randall MacLowry, and written by Mark Zwonitzer.

A SPECIAL
Thanks! TO OUR MEMBERS
Your generosity is inspiring! We are pleased to report that, thanks to your continued generosity, MontanaPBS exceeded the goal of $170,000 for our December pledge drive. Your contributions help provide programs that celebrate the beauty of Montana and our independent spirit—programs that teach us and take us places we have never been before. Most importantly, they are programs that are made available for everyone to experience. We know that a pledge drive can interrupt your regular routine but we hope that you were able to enjoy a concert you would be otherwise unable to attend or maybe you were able to explore a new part of the state from the comfort of your own home. We are sincerely grateful to everyone who pledged during the December drive. Thank you for making public television in Montana a priority in your life!
If you meant to pledge but have not yet, there is still time. Go to our website at

Increase the impact of your donation Did you know that with a matching gift you can sometimes double or even triple the power of your gift? Your company may match your gift to MontanaPBS and increase the total amount of your contribution.
Here’s how it works Check with your Human Resources office to see if they offer a matching gift program. If they do, they will match your gift to a certain level. All you need to do is pick up your company’s required form and send it to us—we’ll take care of the rest. Below is a limited list of organizations who participate in matching gift programs. If you are a current or retired employee of one of these companies, they may match your contribution. IBM Chevron Conoco Phillips Exxon Mobile Foundation First Interstate Bank General Mills 3M Foundation UPS Foundation Home Depot Foundation
BNSF Foundation DOW Chemical Co. AT&T Foundation GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Northwestern Energy Davidson Companies ING Foundation Boeing Company Oracle
Zoot Enterprises General Electric Plum Creek US Bank Corp Macy’s Mitchell’s Oil Field Service DA Davidson and Company
If your company is not listed, ask your personnel department if they have a matching gift program—many do. Maybe yours does, too! Your generosity will go that much further in support of public television and MontanaPBS. Thank you! Send your company’s matching gift form to: Friends of MontanaPBS · P.O. Box 10715 · Bozeman, MT 59719-0715 For other ways you can help support your public television service contact us at
