7pm Wednesday, February 10 Also 2/12 3am, 2/14 1am; 2/15 noon High up in Canada’s Rockies, by a crystal-clear lake rimmed with old-growth forest, a moose is born. At the best of times, the odds are stacked against this leggy 35-pounder surviving its first year, normally less than 50 percent do, but now that number is sinking even lower. Moose populations across many parts of North America are in steep decline and scientists believe one big reason is that fewer moose calves are surviving their first year. If the population continues on this trajectory, scientists believe that moose could be gone from many parts of North America within the next 50 years. This stunningly intimate nature documentary takes viewers deep inside the world of moose to experience a calf’s first year of life up close and personal. Watch in awe as a young calf grows up right before your eyes in a land of snow capped mountains, grizzly bears and wolves amid some of the most striking scenery on the planet. Our film crew spent 13 months with a moose calf and its mother in the spectacular wilds of Jasper National Park to give viewers a ringside seat to witness a mother’s love and a calf’s everyday struggle for survival in the spectacular and sometimes brutal landscape of the Canadian Rockies. Concussion: Answers in the Blood? 9pm Wednesday, February 3 Also 2/5 2am, 5am; 2/7 10am, 4:30pm It can happen to anyone at any age. The Center for Disease Control estimates nearly four million people suffer a concussion each year in the United States. Potentially ground breaking research is taking place in Montana. A team of scientists is attempting to find critical information in human blood. How will their work impact the current system of dealing with concussions? In the sports world, concussion awareness is on the rise and current protocols are much better than even a decade ago. But this system still relies heavily on symptoms and self-reporting. The scientists hope to develop a diagnostic tool to help provide more definitive information for the diagnosis and treatment of concussions. This program provides an inside look at the science while at the same time following athletes and trainers as they navigate the current protocol. JOHN TWIGGS

Nathan Leopold (left) and Richard Loeb, who confessed to the murder of Bobby Franks, appear at a Chicago jail. June 4, 1924. AMERICAN EXPERIENCE
The Perfect Crime 8pm Tuesday, February 9 Also 2/9 8pm; 2/11 1am, 4am
The murder of a fourteen-year-old boy by two wealthy college students was shocking enough, their motive more so. Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb had planned to abduct and kill a child at random to prove they were smart enough to get away with it. Their lawyer Clarence Darrow summoned experts to show that the murderers had been shaped by childhood trauma and physical defects, and that it was society and its barbaric death penalty that deserved to be put on trial. Set in 1920s Chicago—a city of gin joints, gangsters, and political corruption—The Perfect Crime tells a story that set off a national debate about morality, individual responsibility, and capital punishment. Glory 8pm Saturday, February 13 Also 2/14 12:55pm During the American Civil War, the Massachusetts Infantry Regiment engages Confederate forces in the bloody Battle of Antietam. Captain Robert Shaw (Matthew Broderick) is injured in the battle and assumed lost, but is found alive by a gravedigger named John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman) and sent to a field hospital. While on medical leave in Boston, Shaw visits his family, and is introduced to Frederick Douglass. Shaw is offered a promotion to the rank of Colonel, and command of the first all-black regiment the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He accepts the responsibility, and asks his childhood friend, Major Cabot Forbes (Cary Elwes) to serve as his second in command. Their first volunteer soldier is another one of Shaw’s friends, a bookish freeman named Thomas Searles (Andre Braugher). Other recruits soon follow, including Rawlins, timid freeman Jupiter (Jihmi Kennedy), and Trip (Denzel Washington), an escaped slave who is mistrustful of Shaw. Trip instantly clashes with Thomas, and Rawlins must keep the peace.

The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution 8pm Tuesday, February 16 Also 2/18 1am, 4am
The Black Panthers: Vanguard of The Revolution is the first feature-length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party, its significance to the broader American culture, its cultural and political awakening for black people and the painful lessons wrought when a movement derails. Master documentarian Nelson goes straight to the source, weaving a treasure trove of rare archival footage with the voices of the people who were there: police, FBI informants, journalists, white supporters and detractors, and Black Panthers who remained loyal to the party and those who left it. Featuring Kathleen Cleaver, Jamal Joseph, and dozens of others, The Black Panthers: Vanguard of The Revolution is an essential history and a vibrant chronicle of this pivotal movement that gave rise to a new revolutionary culture in America. “Stanley Nelson is one of our greatest chroniclers of American movements for justice and social change,” said Lois Vossen, Independent Lens executive producer. “From the ill-fated People’s Temple to the idealistic young volunteers of Freedom Summer, from the Native American uprising at Wounded Knee to the Black Panther movement, he brings these incendiary, game-changing movements to vivid life in a way that combines clear-eyed analysis with riveting, edge-of-your-seat storytelling.”

More Manners of Downton Abbey 8pm Sunday, February 28 Return to the world of manners with Alastair Bruce, “Downton Abbey’s” historical advisor. With interviews with cast members like Hugh Bonneville and Michelle Dockery, the program navigates the social protocol of aristocrats and servants in the 1920s. Hovering just off camera on the set of Downton Abbey is the man who watches the actors’ every move. The director? No, it’s the historical advisor, Alastair Bruce, guaranteeing that the behavior above stairs and below stairs is true to the period of 1900s Britain. A treat for Downton Abbey fans or anyone who loves history, this Masterpiece goes behind the scenes during the filming of Season 5 with Bruce to explore the elaborate code of conduct that governed British life. Bruce, who holds the prestigious Order of the British Empire, is an expert on royal ceremony and custom, and has been the on set advisor to cast and crew since season 1. Among his responsibilities is to consult with Downton Abbey’s actors on how to speak, stand, sit, eat, drink, dress, and keep a stiff upper lip. With exacting precision, Bruce explains the intricacies of correct manners and behavior.

Increase the impact of your donation Did you know that with a matching gift you can sometimes double or even triple the power of your gift? Your company may match your gift to MontanaPBS and increase the total amount of your contribution.
Here’s how it works Check with your Human Resources office to see if they offer a matching gift program. If they do, they will match your gift to a certain level. All you need to do is pick up your company’s required form and send it to us—we’ll take care of the rest. Below is a limited list of organizations who participate in matching gift programs. If you are a current or retired employee of one of these companies, they may match your contribution. IBM Chevron Conoco Phillips Exxon Mobile Foundation First Interstate Bank General Mills 3M Foundation UPS Foundation Home Depot Foundation
BNSF Foundation DOW Chemical Co. AT&T Foundation GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Northwestern Energy Davidson Companies ING Foundation Boeing Company Oracle
Zoot Enterprises General Electric Plum Creek US Bank Corp Macy’s Mitchell’s Oil Field Service DA Davidson and Company
If your company is not listed, ask your personnel department if they have a matching gift program—many do. Maybe yours does, too! Your generosity will go that much further in support of public television and MontanaPBS. Thank you! Send your company’s matching gift form to: Friends of MontanaPBS · P.O. Box 10715 · Bozeman, MT 59719-0715 For other ways you can help support your public television service contact us at
