How did these early humans overcome the world’s most difficult terrain and ultimately dominate the planet? Montana’s Next Governor
Steve Bullock (D)
JUNEAU CAMPAIGN
ZINKE OFFICIAL CONGRESSIONAL PHOTO
The 2016 race for the state’s top office is pitting Democratic incumbent Gov. Steve Bullock against Republican challenger Greg Gianforte. The Rundown goes beyond the stump speeches to find out where the candidates really stand on issues like refugees, guns, infrastructure and gay rights in a race that is shaping up to be the most expensive gubernatorial contest in the state’s history. For months, the two have sparred over many issues including public access to public lands, the state’s economy, and Second Amendment rights. While Bullock touts his record on job creation and keeping Montana’s budget balanced with a surplus fund, Gianforte calls himself a “political outsider” who is not afraid to stand up to federal overreach. Will Montanans give Bullock another four years in Helena, or will they vote in a Bozeman businessman making his first bid for political office?

The battle for the U.S. House has taken a back seat to the political fireworks in the Presidential and Montana Governor’s race. But with Montana’s lone voice in the House on the line, U.S. Representative Ryan Zinke and Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau are running aggressive campaigns. MontanaPBS profiles their strengths, their political positions and their criticisms of each other in this half hour documentary. From a rural parade on the Blackfeet reservation to the Donald Trump rally in Billings to the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, the documentary explores the candidates’ personalities and political aspirations. Both are seen as rising stars within their parties, so no matter the outcome of the election, Zinke and Juneau will likely be part of Montana’s political landscape well into the future. The program also features Political Scientist Robert Saldin to add context and depth on these two very different candidates. How close do they hew to their party’s lines? How will they vote if Montanans elect them?

Programs like Backroads of Montana, Indian Relay, Fort Peck Dam and Butte, America help our citizens thoughtfully reflect on the colorful history of our state, the majesty of our shared landscape and our unique people and cultures. Programs such as Montana Ag Live, Concussion: Answers in the Blood?, Degrees of Difference and many others foster important discussion about current issues.
Montana PBS offers free television air-time to political candidates, in several key, state-wide races, for a clear and concise discussion of the issues. For airtimes, see A-Z p. 26
Attorney General Candidates Tim Fox (R) and Larry Jent (D) · State’s Rights The AG’s office in Montana has recently taken part in various lawsuits asserting the US government has infringed on our state Constitution and citizens’ rights. How do you view the ever-present conflict between states’ rights and those of the federal government? · Consumer Protection Do you believe state consumer protection laws need to be strengthened? Why or why not? · Public Access vs. Development As a member of the State Land Board, how would you balance quality public access with development of natural resources?
Superintendent of Public Instruction Candidates Elsie Arntzen (R) and Melissa Romano (D) · Common Core What are your views on Montana’s common core standards? · School Choice How do you feel about charter schools and the school choice debate? Should public tax dollars go to non-traditional schools?
· Pre-Kindergarten Do you believe the State should offer publicly funded pre-kindergarten for four year olds? Why or why not?
Secretary of State Candidates Monica Lindeen (D), Roger Roots (L), and Corey Stapleton (R) · Federal Lands Transfer As a member of the State Land Board, what are your views on the state’s current management of the 5.2 million acres of public land, and would you support any transfer of ownership of federal lands to the state? · Online Voter Registration Do you think Montana should offer online voter registration? Why or why not? · Voter Turnout Is it the job of the Secretary of State to increase voter registration and turnout? Why or why not? And if so, which groups of voters would you focus on?
State Auditor Jesse Laslovich (D) and Matt Rosendale (R) · Health Insurance Cost Thousands of Montanans are facing significant increases in their healthcare premiums next year. Separating the reality from the rhetoric, what role can the State Auditor play in controlling the costs of health insurance? · New Legislation Plans When the Montana legislature convenes in January, what legislation would you bring, and how would it affect the function of the State Auditor’s office? · Securities Regulation How important is the role of the State Auditor in regulating the securities industry in Montana?
Supreme Court Justice Candidates Kristen Juras and Dirk Sandefur · Electing Justices Do you believe the office of Montana Supreme Court Justice should be an elected office? Why or why not?

William F. Buckley, Jr. and Gore Vidal on an ABC News set during the 1968 conventions.
INDEPENDENT LENS
Best of Enemies Airs 8pm Monday, October 3 Also 10/5 1:30am
In the summer of 1968, television news changed forever. Dead last in the ratings, ABC News hired two towering public intellectuals to debate each other during the Democratic and Republican national conventions. William F. Buckley Jr. was a leading light of the new conservative movement. Gore Vidal, a Democrat and cousin to Jackie Onassis, was a leftist novelist and polemicist. Armed with deep-seated distrust and enmity, Vidal and Buckley believed each other’s political ideologies were dangerous for America. Like rounds in a heavyweight battle, they pummeled out policy and personal insult, their explosive exchanges devolving into vitriolic name-calling. Live and unscripted, they kept viewers riveted as Nixon became the Republican nominee in Miami and violence rocked the Democratic convention in Chicago. Ratings for ABC News skyrocketed and a new era in contentious public discourse was born.

Durells in Corfu Airs in six parts 7pm Sundays beginning October 16 Keeley Hawes stars as an intrepid widow who decamps from dreary 1930s England to a sun-dappled Greek island with her four recalcitrant children, ages 11 to 21, on The Durrells in Corfu, a six-part adaptation of Gerald Durrell’s My Family and Other Animals and its two sequels. Co-starring with Hawes, who plays Louisa Durrell, are Josh O’Connor as her eldest son, Larry, the instigator of the family’s sudden move to Corfu and a budding writer on his way to becoming the famous novelist Lawrence Durrell; newcomer Callum Woodhouse as son number two, Leslie, an impulsive firearms enthusiast; Daisy Waterstone as daughter Margo, sixteen and man-crazy; and Milo Parker as eleven-year-old Gerry, who only has eyes for wildlife and grew up to be a world-renowned naturalist. A tight budget and desperation—not holiday-making—originally drive the Durrells to sink their meager savings into boat fare to Corfu, where they hope to find a refuge more welcoming for their unconventional ways than the stuffy UK. They arrive on an island with no beach resorts, night clubs, tourist shops, or even electricity—for this is 1935. What Corfu does have is endless opportunity for living, loving, shooting, and animal collecting—depending on your preferences.

Tesla in front of his spiral coil at his Houston Street lab in New York City. Photograph by George Gratham Bain. May, 1896. AMERICAN EXPERIENCE
Tesla Airs 8pm Tuesday, October 18 Also 10/20 1am, 4am
Recently dubbed the “patron saint of geeks,” Nikola Tesla has had electric cars, rock bands, a unit of measurement, a minor planet and a lunar crater named after him. But eclipsed by contemporaries such as Edison and Marconi, the visionary scientist died impoverished and largely forgotten. During his lifetime, he gained international fame for his invention of a system of alternating current that made possible the distribution of electricity over vast distances and is the basis for the electrical grid that powers 21st century life. But the visionary Tesla imagined much more—robots, radio, radar, remote control, the wireless transmission of messages and pictures, and harnessing the wind and sun to provide free energy to all. A showman, he dazzled his scientific peers who flocked to see him demonstrate his inventions and send thousands of volts of electricity pulsing through his body. His fertile but undisciplined imagination was the source of his genius but also his downfall, as the image of Tesla as a “mad scientist” came to overshadow his reputation as a brilliant innovator. But it is his exhilarating sense of the future that has inspired renewed interest in the man, as his once scoffed-at vision of a world connected by wireless technology has become a reality.

AMERICAN MASTERS:
Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You Airs 8pm Tuesday, October 25 Also 10/27 3:31am; 10/30 2am
Largely responsible for the explosion of bold American television in the 1970s, writer/producer Norman Lear’s name is synonymous with the sitcom. This is the first documentary about the 94-year-old television legend. With unprecedented access to Lear, his work and his massive personal archives, this program combines stories from his turbulent childhood and early career with his groundbreaking TV success and social activism. The documentary also features colorful stories from Lear’s family, friends and collaborators, including John Amos, George Clooney, Alan Horn, Bill Moyers, Rob Reiner, Phil Rosenthal and Russell Simmons, as well as cinéma vérité moments with Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Jon Stewart, Amy Poehler and Lena Dunham. Breaking down the fourth wall to create an evocative collage where past and present intermingle, Academy Award-nominated filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady reveal a psychologically rich man whose extraordinary contributions emerge from both his personal story and his own self-professed childlike view of the world.

Celebrate beloved actor and comedian Bill Murray, the latest recipient of The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. From the stage of The John F. Kennedy Center, a star-studded lineup salutes the achievements of the comedic trailblazer. Ironically insincere and yet somehow soft-hearted, Murray is the best-known star to emerge from the cast of Saturday Night Live. On SNL from 1977-1980, he created the cheesy lounge crooner, Nick, and other lovably smarmy characters. It didn’t take long for him to move from the small screen to the big screen, and his first major film role was in the 1979 box office hit Meatballs. He then starred in two of the top-grossing comedies of the 1980s: playing a woolly-headed groundskeeper in Caddyshack (1980) and a slick-talking investigator in Ghostbusters (1984, with fellow SNL alumnus Dan Aykroyd). Murray’s comedy hits in the 1990s included Groundhog Day (1993) and the Amish bowling story Kingpin (1996). He also took more serious roles, playing a mobster in Mad Dog and Glory (1993, with Robert DeNiro) and an eccentric businessman in Wes Anderson’s Rushmore (1998), for which he won Best Supporting Actor from both the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics. He was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his seriocomic role as a jet-lagged movie star in Tokyo in Sofia Coppola’s film Lost in Translation (2003).

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Airs 8pm Saturday, October 29 Also 10/30 1pm
In the turn of the century American west, Robert LeRoy Parker and Harry Longabaugh are better known by their aliases, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, partners and arguably the most renowned outlaws in the area, they who hold up banks or trains. Within the partnership, Butch is the brains, Sundance the shooting brawn. Despite their outlaw status, they are seen as an affable duo by those that know them, even by many of their so called adversaries. Butch has compiled the Hole in the Wall Gang, named after his hideout in the Wyoming mountains, and is its de facto leader primarily because he was the one who brought them all together. But as time goes on, Butch and Sundance are finding that changing circumstances are making their work more and more difficult, which leads to others within the gang questioning Butch’s leadership. Following one of the gang’s jobs holding up a train, a posse of six men on horseback are after them, not the gang as a whole but rather only Butch and Sundance. The duo have to figure who the six men are to find out their end goal. In trying to get away, they are assisted by their friend, schoolteacher Etta Place who is officially Sundance’s girlfriend. She ended up with Sundance instead of Butch only because the two of them saw each other first. Butch and Sundance will learn how far the posse will go to get what they were tasked to do, and in turn Butch and Sundance will also learn how far they will go to preserve their lifestyle as well as their lives.
