GFX image of planes taking off from Dubai International Airport. 3 - PA R T S E R I E S
City in the Sky Airs 9pm Wednesdays At any given moment, more than one million people are traveling by airplane, in 100,000 daily flights moving 30,000 feet above the Earth. This airborne metropolis and the armies of professionals needed to make it all work are captured in this three-part documentary series. From hidden cities of luggage below ground to the steady hands guiding flights around the globe, City in the Sky goes behind the scenes with rare access to uncover the invisible global networks and complex logistics that have allowed air travel to soar to new heights. From the coldest airport in the world (in Yakutsk, Russia), to one of the busiest (in Atlanta, Georgia), to the most dangerous (in the Himalayan town of Paro), the series takes viewers to remote, little known places such as the world’s largest luggage storage facility and the storage tanks in Europe and southeast America that hold and transport millions of gallons of jet fuel through underground pipes. City in the Sky gives viewers a new appreciation for the paper stub or digital ticket that unlocks a precisely choreographed journey that starts the moment they walk into an airport terminal. Signage, lighting and flooring are designed to keep travelers on a flowing path to their gates. Vast underground machines give baggage the ride of its life from check-in to pick-up. Even non-consumer-facing parts of the industry bring fascination: the world’s largest cargo storage in China, for example, sees one-fifth of all global shipping come through its facility.
Departure Airs 9pm Wednesday, February 8 Also 2/10 2am, 5am; 2/15 noon
Learn what it takes to get a million people off the ground—from building the world’s biggest passenger plane to controlling the flow of passengers through the busiest airport on the planet to the perils of takeoff in the coldest city on Earth.
Airborne Airs 9pm Wednesday, February 15 Also 2/17 2am, 5am; 2/22 noon
Examine the hidden army that keeps your plane safe, and explore just what it takes to keep the “city in the sky” functioning and safe between takeoff and landing. Learn why flying has become safer than ever.
Arrival Airs 9pm Wednesday, February 22 Also 2/24 2am, 5am
What goes up must come down—and getting passengers safely back to earth depends on complex global networks and some astonishing technology. Around the world, 100,000 flights a day make touchdown—almost every one safely. Learn what’s involved.

Search for the Super Battery Airs 8pm Wednesday, February 1 Also 2/3 1am, 4am, noon; 2/5 12:07am We live in an age when technological innovation seems to be limitlessly soaring. But for all the satisfying speed with which our gadgets have improved, many of them share a frustrating weakness: the batteries. The quest is on for a “super battery,” and the stakes in this hunt are much higher than the phone in your pocket. With climate change looming, electric cars and renewable energy sources like wind and solar power could hold keys to a greener future... if we can engineer the perfect battery. In Search for the Super Battery, renowned gadget geek and host David Pogue explores the hidden world of energy storage, from the power--and danger--of the lithium-ion batteries we use today, to the bold innovations that could one day charge our world. He wants to uncover what the future of batteries has in store for our gadgets, our lives—and even our planet. Might the lowly battery be the breakthrough technology that changes everything?

Oklahoma City Airs 8pm Tuesday, February 7
Also 2/9 1am, 4am “Oklahoma City” explores the intertwined narratives of the worst domestic terrorist attack in the U.S. and the anti-government movement that inspired the actions of Timothy McVeigh, including two standoffs with law enforcement with tragic outcomes— Ruby Ridge and the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. On April 19, 1995, McVeigh, a former soldier deeply influenced by the literature and ideas of the radical right, set off a truck bomb that destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, killing 168 people and injuring 675 others. Drawing upon a rich news archive of the events, including more than 60 hours of audio from jailhouse interviews with McVeigh, “Oklahoma City” traces the events that led McVeigh to that day and recounts the stories of survivors, first responders, U.S. Marshals, FBI investigators and journalists who covered the attack. The film also provides an indepth and provocative exploration of the extremist anti-government movement that rose to prominence in the 1990s and still makes news today.

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE
Ruby Ridge Airs 8pm Tuesday, February 14 Also 2/16 12:30am, 3:30am, noon Before the occupation of the refuge in Oregon, before the siege at Waco, before Oklahoma City, there was Ruby Ridge. Twenty-five years later, the same question remains: How could this have happened? Shortly before dawn on August 21, 1992, six U.S. Marshals hiked up the steep ridge near the isolated mountaintop cabin of white separatist Randy Weaver in Northern Idaho. Charged with selling two illegal sawed-off shotguns to an undercover agent more than a year earlier, Weaver had failed to appear in court, instead holing up in his cabin with his wife Vicki, three children and a cache of firearms. Growing increasingly frustrated by Weaver’s defiance, the marshals had intensified their surveillance and strayed ever closer to the cabin itself. On the morning of the 21st, a firefight broke out. Eleven days later, the standoff that mesmerized the nation would leave Weaver injured, his wife and son, and a federal agent, dead, and many convinced that the federal government was out of control. Drawing upon eyewitness accounts, including interviews with Weaver’s daughter and federal agents involved in the confrontation, “Ruby Ridge” is a riveting, minute-by-minute account of the event that helped give rise to the modern American militia movement.

The Talk: Race in America Airs 8pm Monday, February 20
Also 2/22 1am, 4am This two-hour documentary about the increasingly common conversation taking place in homes and communities across the country between parents of color and their children, especially sons, about how to behave if they are ever stopped by the police. In many homes, “the talk,” as it is called, usually contains phrases like this: If you are stopped by the police: Always answer “yes sir, no sir”; never talk back; don’t make any sudden movements; don’t put your hands in your pockets; obey all commands; if you think you are falsely accused, save it for the police station. I would rather pick you up at the station than the morgue… The film will present six personal stories to illustrate the issue from multiple points of view: parent, child, the police and the community. Filmed across the country, in communities including Long Beach, California; Oakland, California; St. Louis, Missouri; Richland County, South Carolina; Memphis, Tennessee; and Cleveland, Ohio, the stories will include interviews with academics, police force members, community activists and family members. Among those profiled are activist and founder of The Ethics Project, Dr. Christi Griffin; Samaria Rice; Reverend Catherine Brown; Trevena Garel, retired sergeant, New York City Police Department (NYPD); Eric Adams, Brooklyn Borough President and retired officer, New York City Police Department (NYPD); the Ramirez family; and members of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.

Africa’s Great Civilization Part 1 airs 8pm Monday, Feb. 27 Also 3/10 1am, 4am
Part 2 airs 8pm Tuesday, Feb. 28 Part 3 airs 8pm Wednesday, March 1 Gates chronicles a sweeping 200,000-year journey of discovery, showing the complexity, grandeur and diversity of many millennia of undiscussed and unknown details about Africa’s compelling and dramatic history. Gates presents—for the first time for a popular audience—a new vision not only of Africa’s pivotal place in world history, but also the world’s relation to Africa. Africa’s contributions to the human community’s development of art and language, writing and religion, agriculture and government, the arts and sciences are commonly misunderstood, or even ignored. This landmark series presents a new and comprehensive narrative about Africa and the history of the extraordinary diverse peoples of its continent, from the Mediterranean Sea to the Cape of Good Hope, from the Red Sea and down the Nile River, and from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic. The series sizzles with exciting interviews with leading historians, creative writers, art historians, paleoanthropologists, geneticists and museum curators, including the Nigerian Nobel Prize-winning author Wole Soyinka; Kenyan paleoanthropologist Dr. Richard Leakey; historians John Thornton and Linda Heywood of Boston University; Christopher Ehret of UCLA; Ghanaian scholar Emmanuel Akyeampong of Harvard University; and art historian Cécile Fromont of the University of Chicago, along with many more.

This amazing machine gives its passengers a front row seat as they dig deep underground on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure below the Earth’s surface. There they discover a whole new world from fossils and troglobites to rivers of lava. The family gains a whole new perspective on our planet and what it’s made of…especially after a runaway mine cart thrill ride!

The Drill Engine Train burrows into an underground limestone cave, where the Pteranodon Family meets some strange creatures without eyes called “troglobites.” In a contest to see who would make the best troglobite, Buddy, Tiny, Shiny, and Don participate in a treasure hunt— with their eyes closed! The kids have to rely on their other senses (with some guidance from the actual troglobites) to navigate the cave and find the prize.
Part 2 While digging even further underground,
the drill bit on the Drill Engine Train breaks. The Pterandon Family find themselves in the Cave of Giant Crystals, where they learn all about rocks and crystals (what they are, how they’re different, how they form). In order to get back home, the Pteranodon Family has to fix the drill bit by finding a mineral harder than the mineral that broke the bit in the first place.

A Chef’s Life, Season 4 Airs on MontanaPBS Create 4:30pm, 7:30pm February 16–28
Also 2/17–3/1 1:30am Peabody and Emmy Award-winning docuseries A Chef’s Life begins its fourth season September 2016 with host and celebrated chef Vivian Howard navigating audiences through a new line up of farm fresh ingredients. Through 10 episodes, Vivian takes viewers on a culinary journey that stretches from Kinston to Portland to the Big Apple. Things kick off in melodic gear with a benefit dinner where The Avett Brothers play second fiddle and spring onions take center stage. The season explores a lush landscape of watermelon, sunchokes, field peas, catfish, mayo and other unlikely food stars. In back-to-back episodes spanning both American coasts, the self-professed “Collard Queen” cooks cabbage and crowns it king. Vivian also realizes a longtime dream and embraces her new role as cookbook author—this season of A Chef’s Life takes viewers into the high-pressure and rewarding business of book writing. Major staff changes at the restaurant, a heavier workload and the drama of heightened emotions make each portion of this fourth season all the more delicious. When asked how to describe this new season, Vivian called it the cream of the crop. “When you do an ingredient-driven show, the worry is that you’ll run out of content. But this season surprised me at the depth of story. I think it’s our best yet.”

Distinctly referred to as “a redwood tree, with deep roots in American culture,” Dr. Maya Angelou (April 4, 1928-May 28, 2014) led a prolific life. As a singer, dancer, activist, poet and writer, she inspired generations with lyrical modern African-American thought that pushed boundaries. Best known for her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (Random House), she gave people the freedom to think about their history in a way they never had before.
