The Great War Part 1 8pm Monday, April 10 & 4/12 1am, 4am Part 2 8pm Tuesday, April 11 & 4/13 1am, 4am Part 3 8pm Wednesday, April 12 & 4/14 1am, 4am Drawing on the latest scholarship, including unpublished diaries, memoirs and letters, The Great War tells the rich and complex story of World War I through the voices of nurses, journalists, aviators and the American troops who came to be known as “doughboys.” The series explores the experiences of African-American and Latino soldiers, suffragists, Native-American “code talkers” and others whose participation in the war to “make the world safe for democracy” has been largely forgotten. The Great War also explores how a brilliant PR man bolstered support for the war in a country hesitant to put lives on the line for a foreign conflict; how President Woodrow Wilson steered the nation through three-and-a-half years of neutrality, only to reluctantly lead America into the bloodiest conflict the world had ever seen, thereby transforming the United States into a dominant player on the international stage; and how the ardent patriotism and determination to support America’s crusade for liberty abroad led to one of the most oppressive crackdowns on civil liberties at home in American history. It is also a story of little-known heroism and sacrifice that would leave more than 53,000 men dead on the battlefield and more than 60,000 dead from disease.

N AT U R E
Forest of the Lynx Airs 7pm Wednesday, April 26 Also 4/28 3am, noon; 4/30 1am
Forests are far more complex than previously imagined. Travel deep into the remote forests of the Kalkalpen National Park in Austria—the largest area of wilderness in the Alps. Abandoned and unmanaged by man for close to a quarter of a century, the forest’s dramatic cycle of growth and decay now rules the landscape. What appears at first to be devastation and destruction is in fact part of the fundamental process of the forest’s regeneration and transformation back to its natural, primeval state – along with pygmy owls, woodpeckers, and colorful insects. One of the most salient changes in the forest, however, is the return of the lynx. After 150 years of absence, the feline’s illusive presence is a testimony to nature’s power of revival, making the lynx the symbol of the forest.

Keepers of the Land: Three Montana Families & Their Homestead Legacies The Homestead Act of 1862 remains one of the most significant and enduring events in the westward expansion of the United States. The chance for free land and opportunity proved irresistible to many, and in the following decades, 151,600 homesteads had been claimed in Montana, the most out of any state. Airs Sunday, 4/30 at 10am, Thursday, 4/27 at 7pm
Aging Out: Autism in Montana
Airs 7pm Thursday, April 6 Also 4/9 10am; 4/17 2am
In 2000, only one in 150 children were diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, but that rate increased to one in 68 by 2010, according to the Center for Disease Control. The wave of children aging out of the school system and transitioning into adulthood leaves many people on a search for help and structure. Rural Montana families have fewer alternatives to create a plan for the future. Dianne Booth and her family are a prime example of that.
The Violin Alone The unlikely pairing of two modern visionaries, a Hungarian violin virtuoso Vilmos Olah and Eric Funk, contemporary classical composer from the heart of Montana, has resulted in a new piece of music that pushes the boundaries of music and our notion of the possible. Vili: Concerto for Violin Alone is an extreme concerto in which its player must simultaneously play the solo AND orchestra parts. He must emulate flutes, oboes, clarinet, timpani, and brass. A reflection of the violinist, the composer, and the unquenchable human spirit of Eastern Europe, The Violin Alone re-imagines what music can be. Airs Sunday, 4/2 at 10am, Sunday, 4/2 at 2am
Aging Out: Autism in Montana Each year, more children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, but the framework of care drastically changes for them after adolescence. As children transition into adulthood, many families a search for help and structure. Airs Thursday, 4/6 at 7pm, Sunday, 4/9 at 10am, Monday, 4/17 at 2am
The Rundown with Beth Saboe: In the Legislature: April 14th, 2017 Every other year, Montana state lawmakers convene for 90 days in Helena to discuss changes to our laws on taxes, healthcare, the environment, business and much more. This week we’ll look at the important issues being debated in the Legislature and explain how they could impact Montanans from Superior to Sidney. With insightful reporting and one-on-one interviews, this program helps viewers understand the legislative process and how they’re being represented by elected officials. Airs Friday, 4/14 at 6:59pm

A woman in Fairfield has an unusually large hankie collection, and a Missoula woman’s entrepreneurial dream is an inspiration to those around her. Airs Saturday, 4/8 at 5pm Fromberg to Ulm Along the Missouri River south of Great Falls, a woman gathers fiber from her family farm animals to make an intriguing variety of products. We stop by a tea shop in Anaconda for some cookies and Earl Grey. A naturalist guides us to see some of Montana’s diverse butterfly population. And see all that remains of the town of Gebo: the cemetery. Finally, have a cold beer at at the Cowboy Bar & Museum in Fromberg. Airs Saturday, 4/15 at 5pm Two Dot to Fishtail Stop at one of Montana’s legendary night-clubs, the Sip & Dip in Great Falls, complete with the piano stylings of Pat Sponheim. Keepers of the Land: Three Montana Families & Their Homestead Legacies Airs 7pm Thursday, April 27 Also 4/30 10am
The Homestead Act of 1862 is one of the most significant and enduring events in the westward expansion of the United States. By granting 160 acres of free land to claimants, it allowed nearly any man or woman a “fair chance.” Nearing the 150th Anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s approval of the Act, the documentary explores its characteristics of importance to the state of Montana, and to Montana’s keepers of the land. It was the purpose of the government to “elevate the condition of men, to lift artificial burdens from all shoulders and to give everyone an unfettered start and a fair chance in the race of life.” And when President Lincoln signed the Homestead Act into law, he announced “This will do something for the little fellow.” The Act allowed men and unmarried women who were American citizens over the age of 21 to claim up to 160 acres of public land and make homes for themselves and their families. Two years following the Act, the first homestead entry made in Montana was on a claim just north of Helena. The chance for free land and opportunity proved irresistible to many, and in the following decades, 151,600 homesteads had been claimed in Montana, the most out of any state that had enacted the Homestead Act, according to the U.S. Department of the Interior. North Dakota trailed by 118, 472 homesteads.

On December 14, 2012, a disturbed young man committed a horrific mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, that took the lives of 20 elementary school children and six educators. Kim A. Snyder’s searing new documentary Newtown, filmed over the course of nearly three years, uses deeply personal, never before-heard testimonies to relate the aftermath of the deadliest mass shooting of school children in American history. Through raw and heartbreaking interviews with parents, siblings, teachers, doctors and first responders, Newtown documents a traumatized community still reeling from the senseless tragedy, fractured by grief but driven toward a sense of purpose. There are no words of compassion or reassurance that can bring back those who lost their lives during the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Instead, Snyder delves into the lives and homes of those who remain, all of whom have been indelibly changed by the events. They speak candidly about their grief, anger and disbelief over what occurred and their disappointment that nothing has truly changed with regard to the country’s legal response to gun violence. Newtown bears witness to their profound grief and allows it to reverberate within our collective conscience, exploring what happens to a community after it becomes the epicenter of a national discussion and what it must cope with after the cameras leave.

For centuries, the Lithuanian city of Vilnius was one of the most important Jewish centers in the world, earning the title “Jerusalem of the North,” until the Nazis destroyed it. About 95% of its Jewish population of Vilna, its name in Hebrew and Yiddish, was murdered and its synagogues and institutions were reduced to ruins. The Soviets finished the job, paving over the remnants of Vilna’s famous Great Synagogue, for example, so thoroughly that few today know it ever existed. Now, an international team of archaeologists is trying to recover this lost world. They will excavate the remains of its Great Synagogue and uncover one of Vilna’s greatest secrets: a lost escape tunnel dug by Jewish prisoners inside a horrific Nazi execution site. After the Thin Man Airs 8pm Saturday, April 1 Also 4/2 1pm
Now back in San Francisco after their holiday in New York, Nick and Nora find themselves trying to solve another mystery. It’s New Year’s Eve and they are summoned to dinner at Nora’s elderly, and very aristocratic, family. There they find that cousin Selma’s husband Robert has been missing for three days. Nick reluctantly agrees to look for him but the case takes a twist when Robert is shot and Selma is accused of murder. Several other murders occur but eventually Nick gathers everyone into the same room to reveal the identity of the killer.
The Thin Man Goes Home Airs 8pm Saturday, April 22 Also 4/16 1pm
Nick and Nora head to Nick’s hometown of Sycamore Springs to spend some time with his parents. His father, a prominent local physician, was always a bit disappointed with Nick’s choice of profession in particular and his lifestyle in general. With Nick’s arrival however the towns folk, including several of the local criminal element, are convinced that he must be there on a case despite his protestations that he’s just there for rest and relaxation. When someone is shot dead on his doorstep however, Nick finds himself working on a case whether he wants to or not.

Violins of Hope: Strings of the Holocaust Airs 8pm Friday, April 21 Also 4/26 5am
For Jews during the Holocaust, there wasn’t much reprieve from the despair and horror surrounding them, but music—particularly that of violins, which hold an important role in Jewish culture—offered temporary solace and a glimmer of humanity. Violinists in concentration camps were sometimes treated better and even spared their lives because of their ability to play this important instrument. A SPECIAL
Thanks! TO OUR MEMBERS
We just completed another very successful pledge drive and would like to sincerely thank everyone who provided support. Your generous contributions help us continue to air programs that celebrate the beauty of Montana and our independent spirit. Programs that teach us and take us places we have never been before. Most importantly, they are programs that are made available for everyone to experience. We know that a pledge drive can interrupt your regular routine but we hope that you were able to enjoy a concert you would be otherwise unable to attend or maybe you were able to explore a new part of the state from the comfort of your own home. We are sincerely grateful to everyone who pledged during the March drive. Thank you!
If you meant to pledge but have not yet, there is still time. Go to our website at
www.montanapbs.org or call us at

To celebrate Earth Day, Nature Cat, Squeeks, Daisy and Hal go on a nature hike to Butterfly Hills. But they don’t get too far because they keep running into plastic bags blowing in the wind. / With an earth-friendly alternative in place for the supermarket plastic bag problem, Nature Cat and his pals look to get back to their Earth Day hike celebration but are once again sidetracked. This time it’s by a plastic bottle floating in a stream. Trying to get this one plastic bottle out of nature and into a recycling can takes them on a perilous, action-packed journey through the waterways, ending up in the ocean where they see more plastic waste.
Spring Hunter 3000/The Case of the Missing Moon Airs 7:30am April 18 Spring has sprung and it’s time for Daisy’s favorite online game: Spring Hunter 3000! The goal of the game is to try and find as many signs of spring as possible: birds, flowers, you name it. The more you find, the more points you get. / Hal is so so so sad– when he went to howl at the moon, like he does every night, the moon was gone. How does a moon just disappear? Can Nature Cat and his pals find the missing moon?
Mighty Mountain Climbers/Bug Eating Plants! Airs 7:30am April 19 On a dare from Ronald, Nature Cat and his pals try to climb all the way up to The Mighty Mountain Peak. They get all the supplies they need, and head out, but they soon find out that hiking up a mountain is hard, and poses many problems no matter how prepared you are. / A super excited Squeeks shows her brand-new, homemade comic “Bug Eating Plants of The Swamp!” to her pals. Nature Cat, Hal, Daisy and Squeeks must make their way through the swamp while trying to stay away from the bug eating plants.

Nick Stellino: Storyteller in the Kitchen Airs 4:30pm & 7:30pm, April 24–30 Also 1:30am 4/25–5/1
For the first time, chef Nick Stellino invites viewers into his home to experience the recipes nearest to his heart in this 13-part series. Throughout the program, Nick travels down memory lane to revisit dishes inspired by his childhood and family in Sicily. He demonstrates step-by-step instructions and easy-to-follow techniques, bringing Italian classics to life in a way that allows viewers to prepare new chapters in their own culinary experience. Each half-hour episode revolves around a theme, which is explored through candid moments, personal anecdotes, and lively preparations captured in his Los Angeles home. As a seasoned chef with a passion for food, Nick highlights an ingredient and sometimes a cooking utensil, and then expertly describes how each connects to his Sicilian culture and to Italian cuisine in the preparation of each unique meal. Featured dishes are steeped in Mediterranean tradition—salsiccia al sugo (sausages braised in tomato sauce over mashed potatoes), pasta alla norma (pasta with fried eggplant), and pasta alle vongole all’essenziale (clams and spaghetti)—and are reduced to their essence and explained and demonstrated in a manner that the home cook can easily manage and replicate. This program highlights Nick’s love of food, humor and passion for all things Italian.
