Renowned National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore is a natural-born storyteller. His Photo Ark project is a digital “collection” of the world’s mammals, fish, amphibians, birds, reptiles and insects, and the focus of this program. This captivating new three-part series follows Sartore as he documents threatened species at zoos, in nature preserves, and in the wild. Scientists and naturalists reveal surprising and important information about why ensuring the future of these animals is so critical. Author, conservationist and National Geographic Fellow, Sartore has traveled to nearly 40 countries to photograph 6,395 species for the Photo Ark to date, including 576 amphibians, 1,839 birds, 716 fish, 1,123 invertebrates, 896 mammals, and 1,245 reptiles in captivity. When complete, the Photo Ark will be one of the most comprehensive records of the world’s biodiversity. Through Rare, audiences can journey with Sartore across the globe—to Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania—to chronicle his experiences. Most days, Sartore has the best job in the world: in the premiere episode of Rare, prankish semi-habituated lemurs playfully crawl over him at Madagascar’s Lemur Island rehab center, during one of his easiest photography shoots. Others are more challenging as no amount of tasty, tempting raw carrots can persuade a 500-pound, 150-year-old giant tortoise to stand on his mark or get ready for his close-up. Likewise, in Florida, a photo of an elusive bunny taking refuge near an active U.S. Navy airstrip has taken four years to procure for the Ark. It’s all in a day’s work…. Sartore knows he is in a race against time. Sometimes he is able to photograph 30 to 40 species in a few days. Others are disappearing before he can get to them. Rare looks at factors driving extinction, including deforestation, rising sea levels, invasive species, pollution and human development, all impacting creatures essential to the world’s ecosystems.

PRIME SUSPECT
Tennison The six-part drama, presented over 3 nights, portrays the early career of one of television’s most iconic detectives, Jane Tennison. Tennison is a visually-stunning, cinematic style drama which rewinds to 1970s London where viewers meet Jane as an ambitious, single-minded 22-year-old probationary officer, starting out in an environment where chauvinism and rule-bending are the norm. Prime Suspect: Tennison is adapted from the bestselling novel Tennison by acclaimed author Lynda La Plante, who created the original Prime Suspect series. Jane’s dedicated, instinctive approach is evident from the start as she is thrown into a brutal murder inquiry, witnessing first-hand the devastating effect of violent crime, and experiencing tragic ramifications herself. Immersed in the music, fashion and politics that defined a generation, the series follows her as she establishes herself in a workplace dominated by men, revealing the complexities of the ambition and personal life that shaped one of television’s most famous female characters.

SATURDAY
Beyond the Divide
Airs 7pm Thursday, July 13 Also 7/16 10am; 7/27 noon
Beyond the Divide hopes to illuminate a path to healing old wounds by portraying authentic peace-building. In the early ’80s in Missoula, Mont., a group of residents decided to commit an act of civil disobedience by painting a peace symbol on the face of an enormous communications panel that sat atop a hillside overlooking the town. The reaction essentially divided the community between anti-war and military-establishment supporters, as past resentments resurfaced. The one-hour documentary traces the aftermath of this act and follows the story of how two individuals—former Vietnam explosives engineer Dan Gallagher and fervent peace advocate Betsy Mulligan-Daguea—come to a deeper understanding of each other’s differences through conversation and collaboration, ultimately finding that the ideals they share are much stronger than imagined.

Antiques Roadshow: Vintage Airs Monday evenings
In all new “Vintage” episodes, Antiques Roadshow looks back at some of its most memorable objects, what they are worth today and how the market has changed. Some treasures have increased in value, while others haven’t fared so well. “With our new ‘Vintage’ episodes, we wanted to revisit appraisals from our archive take a look at how the objects have stood up in value over the years,” said Antiques Roadshow executive producer Marsha Bemko. “Collecting categories that were desirable 15 years ago, like ‘brown furniture’ have gone down in value while others, such as ‘fine jewelry’ have gone up. Viewers can make their guesses on which items’ values have soared and which have fallen.”

Julie Taboulie’s Lebanese Kitchen MontatPBS Create, airs Monday thru Friday at 4:30pm and 7:30pm beginning 7/17 MontanaPBS, airs Wednesdays at 11am beginning 7/19 In Julie Taboulie’s Lebanese Kitchen, chef and Lebanese-American Julie Taboulie celebrates the colorful and flavorful cuisine of Lebanon. Filmed on location throughout the greater Syracuse area and Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, Julie shares her authentic array of original Lebanese recipes (tabbouleh, lamb kebab, and Lebanese-style French fries) that have been handed down in her family for over three generations. Throughout the series, the New York native searches for the freshest and finest foods at her favorite farmer’s markets and farm stands, winds her way through several Finger Lake wineries, and explores the rich rural farmlands, lakes and landscapes of the region. Julie then stops by her mother’s garden before heading back home to her kitchen, where she demonstrates her tried and true tips, tricks, and techniques so that viewers can successfully re-create her recipes themselves.
