A plastic pipe encrusted in quagga mussels from Lake Mead, Nevada sits on display at the Flathead Lake Biological Station.

The Enemy on Our Shores  Airs 7pm Thursday, October 26 Also 10/29 10am

In 2016, one of the most devastating invasive species in the world was detected in a handful of Montana waterbodies for the first time. The evidence of non-native mussel larvae in Tiber and Canyon Ferry reservoirs prompted a statewide emergency response as stakeholders rushed to combat the aquatic enemy. Invasive zebra and quagga mussels, which are native to eastern Europe, have already wreaked havoc on the Great Lakes and spread throughout the majority of the U.S., except for Wyoming, Idaho, Washington and Oregon. The tiny invasive species can inflict colossal destruction and scientists and lawmakers agree that an infestation of zebra or quagga mussels is the single greatest threat to Montana’s lakes and rivers. In this half-hour documentary, News and Public Affairs producer Beth Saboe examines the potential economic and ecological devastation the aquatic pest can cause by fouling boats, docks, beaches and clogging hydroelectric intake systems and irrigation pipes. It’s estimated that zebra and quagga mussels cause $1 billion in damage each year to dams and other water-dependant industries. An invasion in Montana could mean higher electricity prices, lower property values, reduced fish populations and a potentially harmful hit to the outdoor recreation industry, which is now the state’s number one economic driver. Enemy on Our Shores also explores what state and tribal governments are doing to try to stop the aquatic invasive species from spreading like wildfire. From mandatory boat inspections to new early detection techniques, authorities are sounding alarm bells and asking for an “all-hands-on-deck” approach. Pressure to stop the mussels from crossing the continental divide and further invading Montana’s waterways is also mounting from outside the state. Western Montana is home to the headwaters of the Columbia River watershed, which is the last mussel-free watershed in the lower 48 states and a vital waterway for Idaho, Washington and Oregon.

The Oltrogge Family  From Absarokee, Montana, the Oltrogge family band performs music made popular by Peter, Paul and Mary. America in the 1960s witnessed a shift toward music that spoke to human consciousness instead of being simple entertainment. Young people through the country bought guitars and learned to play simple chords and sing the songs of Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, the Kingston Trio, and Peter, Paul, & Mary. One of those young Americans was David Oltrogge. Wanting his children to learn and enjoy some of the music of his youth, David taught his son, Luke, and his daughter, Hannah, to sing these songs. As the federal government through the Park Service decides the future of Yellowstone Park, we can learn what those unselfish men of the 1800s envisioned for this showcase of nature’s wonders. We see its unique landscape and learn of the far-reaching vision of early explorers, and learn why they were determined to set Yellowstone set apart as this country’s first National Park. The program covers the years 1807–1886.

Learn the secrets of the Old Faithful Inn and one of the hotels built in Yellowstone that was a mile in circumference. Another hotel was forced out of business with the arrival of the automobile, which transformed Yellowstone from a playground of the rich into the camping mecca for the masses.

Neuroimaging of the human brain.

Concussion: Answers in the Blood?  Airs 7pm Thursday, October 5 Also 10/8 10am; 10/9 4am; 10/11 noon; 10/13 5am It can happen to anyone at any age. The Center for Disease Control estimates nearly four million people suffer a concussion each year in the United States. Potentially ground breaking research is taking place in Montana. A team of scientists is attempting to find critical information in human blood. How will their work impact the current system of dealing with concussions? In the sports world, concussion awareness is on the rise and current protocols are much better than even a decade ago. But this system still relies heavily on symptoms and self-reporting. The scientists hope to develop a diagnostic tool to help provide more definitive information for the diagnosis and treatment of concussions. This program provides an inside look at the science while at the same time following athletes and trainers as they navigate the current protocol. JOHN TWIGGS

Joanne Froggatt as Mary Ann Cotton M AST E R P I EC E

Dark Angel  Airs 8pm Saturday, October 28 Born in North East England in 1832, a child of the coal fields, Mary Ann Cotton (Joanne Frogatt) grew up in poverty with the dream of escaping the hard life of a miner’s family, a goal she came tantalizingly close to achieving. Her chosen means were her good looks, sexual allure, and the dirty secret of nineteenth-century suspicious deaths: arsenic, which is tasteless and easily disguised in a cup of tea. For authorities, the problem was that arsenic poisoning, if done skillfully, mimicked the symptoms of two of the major public health scourges of the day: typhoid fever and cholera. The passing of a child or husband after a week of severe stomach pains, convulsions, and other portents of disease was all too common—and even less surprising when several members of the same household succumbed. Mary Ann did tempt fate by taking out a modest insurance policy on her intended victims, whenever possible, but she inadvertently hit on the major success strategies of a serial killer: keep moving, be charming, and exude self-confidence. And along with others in this line of criminality, her body count can never be certain; the current best estimate is at least thirteen, ranking her far above her Victorian male counterpart, Jack the Ripper. Female serial killers are so rare that criminologists continue to debate what makes them tick. Is it a thirst for power, a desire for material gain, or a sadistic delight in undermining gender stereotypes when they ask, “Why don’t I make you a nice cup of tea?”

It’s Christmas Eve, and when Amelia and Arthur Havisham gather to hear the reading of their father’s will, their lives are left in turmoil by its unexpected contents.

Dickensian  Airs 6pm Sunday, October 29 Also 10/31 4am Christmas Eve. Jacob Marley collects from Grandfather, who is soon relieved at Nell’s recovery from an illness. Amelia Havisham learns from Mr Jaggers that she has inherited most of her late father’s estate; her brother Arthur, angered by the news, stages a confrontation that his accomplice, Meriwether Compeyson, acting the innocent passerby, curtails before escorting Amelia to Satis House. At Marley’s request, Fagin has Sikes bring Nancy to the moneylender’s house. Bob Cratchit scrounges together a supper for his family. Marley is found murdered in a dockside alley. Christmas Day. Mr Venus examines (and identifies) Marley’s body for Inspector Bucket, and finds a piece of wood in the dead man’s head wound. Edward Barbary will not tell daughter Honoria of their financial troubles. Inspector Bucket discovers that Marley’s wallet is missing and that he had last had an appointment with someone noted only as “C.” Amelia rejects Compeyson’s proposal to act as a peaceful intermediary in her dispute with Arthur. Peter Cratchit gives Nell a present that is also a token of his affection. Frances learns of her sister Honoria’s secret romance with Captain Hawdon. Compeyson tells Arthur that, after Amelia showed him the door, he is now determined to financially ruin her.

They are being welcomed as a part of the multimedia brand’s Generation NEXT initiative designed to encourage and empower people to join the skilled trades. Work is kicking off now on new house projects in Newton, Massachusetts, and Charleston, South Carolina. This season, host Kevin O’Connor, general contractor Tom Silva, master carpenter Norm Abram, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey and landscape contractor Roger Cook will be joined by trade students and up-and-coming professionals as America’s most trusted home improvement show shines a spotlight on the value of jobs in the building industry. By inviting the apprentices to join the crew, This Old House is expanding its Generation NEXT efforts and raising visibility of the need for new talent in the trades.

This caricature is thanks, in large part, to a high-profile obituary filled with falsehoods, written by his literary rival Rufus W. Griswold. Determined to re-invent American literature, Poe was an influential—and brutally honest—literary critic and magazine editor, who also invented the detective protagonist with his character C. Auguste Dupin, refined the science fiction genre and popularized short stories, actually writing more comedies than horror. An orphan in search of family, love and literary fame, Poe struggled with alcoholism and was also a product of early 19th century American urban life: depressed from the era’s culture of death due to the high mortality rate and the struggles of living in poverty. Poe famously died under mysterious circumstances and his cause of death remains unknown.
