Zack Beyer portrays Sultan al-Kamil.
The Sultan and the Saint Airs 7pm Tuesday, December 26 Also 12/28 3am
This new film tells the little-known story of St. Francis of Assisi and the Sultan of Egypt, Muhammad Al-Kamil, two charismatic men of different faiths who met on a bloody battlefield and found common ground. In 1219, during the height of the Crusades—the bitter religious war between Muslims and Christians—St. Francis risked his life in an attempt to bring peace. What he encountered when he crossed enemy lines was a Muslim leader who welcomed him, listened with respect, and who ultimately responded with one of the greatest humanitarian acts in the history of warfare. Narrated by Jeremy Irons, The Sultan and the Saint combines sweeping drama with historical context from authors and religious scholars to create an inspiring and timely story of peace and reconciliation. The fact that the Sultan of Egypt and a Catholic friar would have a respectful spiritual exchange during the Crusades is nothing short of miraculous. By the time the two men met, Christians were on their Fifth Crusade, fighting a holy war to reclaim Jerusalem after five centuries of Muslim rule. To motivate men to travel to faraway lands and engage in bloody conflict, Christian leaders stoked religious fervor and hatred of the enemy. “Destroy that vile race,” wrote Pope Urban II in his letter of instruction to the first crusaders. “Those who refuse to pay Him the servant’s service that they owe Him will justly deserve to suffer a sentence of damnation.” Cover images: Top: Courtesy of UPF; Middle & bottom: Courtesy of Jonathan Mount

Marines marching in Danang. March 15, 1965.
Call the Midwife Holiday Special Airs 8pm Monday, December 25 Also 12/27 1am
Joining the cast in Season 7 is Leonie Elliott (Wondrous Oblivion, Danny and the Human Zoo, Black Mirror), who plays Nurse Lucille Anderson, the first West Indian midwife to be featured as a regular character in the series. Elegant, funny and clever, Nurse Lucille is swift to settle in and brings a fresh new energy to life at Nonnatus House. Through her eyes, viewers explore the experiences of Caribbean nurses who went to London in the 1960s to support the growing Nonnatus House. Written by Heidi Thomas, the Christmas special opens with Poplar under a thick blanket of snow, as the midwives face the challenge of the coldest winter for 300 years. The winter of 1963 saw temperatures plunge to a record low and the whole country brought to a standstill due to the severe weather. Battling snow, ice, power cuts and frozen pipes, the midwives strive to provide the best possible care for their patients. Valerie helps a young couple, newly arrived in London, who experience a traumatic birth, and Sister Julienne strives to reunite a family torn apart by a tormenting father. Anita Dobson (EastEnders, Doctors) guest stars as Mabel. Season 7 begins with the nuns and nurses being tested as they have never been before, both personally and professionally. All around them they see the old East End vanishing, as slum clearances make way for bold new tower blocks to accommodate expanding communities. Their work brings them into contact with a wide range of challenges, from leprosy, tokophobia and stroke, to Huntington’s chorea, cataracts and unmarried mothers. Trixie’s romance with Christopher continues to develop, while Tom and Barbara enjoy life as a married couple. Nurse Crane finds her authority questioned from an unexpected quarter and Sister Monica Joan is forced to accept her failing faculties. Life for the Turners is turned upside down when Shelagh decides to employ an au pair.

C. M. Russell and the American West Charles M. Russell is an overshadowed American artist. Contemporaries like Remington and Winslow Homer are more celebrated. This film places Russell, and his very personal and unique version of Western Art, in the canon of great American artists. Russell is a significant historical figure, essentially giving us a look at what the 19th century, end of the the open Range frontier, was like. His vantage point, knowledge and influence extended into the 20th century and the beginning of the era of “Hollywood Westerns.” Russell not only painted and sculpted what he saw and knew, but his illustrated letters to everyone from Douglas Fairbanks and Will Rodgers are truly an exceptional way to examine our western heritage.

Ken Burns: America’s Storyteller Airs 8:45pm Tuesday, December 5 Also 12/7 1am
Tom Hanks hosts this new celebration of filmmaker Ken Burns, who has been aptly described as “America’s storyteller.” Over the course of almost 40 years, he has carried on a deep and probing conversation with Americans about themselves and their country, its past and its future. Perhaps more than anyone else, he has elevated documentary filmmaking to an art form and made American history come alive. Featuring interviews with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Doris Kearns Goodwin, George Lucas, Yo-Yo Ma, Wynton Marsalis, Meryl Streep, Sam Waterston and others, the program explores the tremendous depth and breadth of Burns’s work with a special emphasis on films that reveal the unique American character such as Thomas Jefferson, Susan B. Anthony, Mark Twain, Jackie Robinson and others.

AMERICAN MASTERS
This is Bob Hope... Airs 8pm Friday, December 29 Also 12/3 noon
During his eight-decade career, Bob Hope (1903–2003) was the only performer to achieve top-rated success in every form of mass entertainment: vaudeville, Broadway, movies, radio, television, popular song and personal appearances, including his annual USO Christmas military tours and hosting the Academy Awards more times than anyone else. A comedy innovator, Hope invented the topical monologue that later became a late-night TV staple and comedy tropes like talking while backing up. He refined a spontaneous, conversational, improvisational style of comedy as a vaudeville master of ceremonies that created a blueprint for acerbic standup comics. Written, directed and produced by John Scheinfeld (The U.S. vs. John Lennon, Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary), American Masters: This is Bob Hope... presents a candid look at a remarkable life with unprecedented access to Hope’s personal archives, including writings voiced by Billy Crystal and clips from Hope’s body of work to reveal a gifted individual who recognized the power of fame, embraced its responsibilities and handled celebrity with extraordinary wit and grace, becoming a model for public service in Hollywood.

The Montana Endowment Tax Credit (METC) is a special benefit for Montana taxpayers who make a planned gift to a charitable endowment in Montana. Montana PBS donors who qualify for the METC reduce their income tax liability, enabling them to consider larger gifts that leave a lasting impact. With the METC, donors receive a tax credit of 40 percent of the value of the gift, up to $10,000, that will be deducted from their income tax liability. Planned gifts that qualify for the METC include:

Julie Taboulie’s Lebanese Kitchen Airs on MontanaPBS Create 5pm & 10:30pm Tuesdays & Thursdays In Julie Taboulie’s Lebanese Kitchen, chef and Lebanese-American Julie Taboulie celebrates the colorful and flavorful cuisine of Lebanon. Filmed on location throughout the greater Syracuse area and Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, Julie shares her authentic array of original Lebanese recipes (tabbouleh, lamb kebab, and Lebanese-style French fries) that have been handed down in her family for over three generations. Throughout the series, the New York native searches for the freshest and finest foods at her favorite farmer’s markets and farm stands, winds her way through several Finger Lake wineries, and explores the rich rural farmlands, lakes and landscapes of the region. Julie then stops by her mother’s garden before heading back home to her kitchen, where she demonstrates her tried and true tips, tricks, and techniques so that viewers can successfully re-create her recipes themselves.
