Gas Prices (May 3, 2021) - Texas gas prices have fallen 0.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.60/g today, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Gas prices in Texas are 0.9 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand $1.11/g higher than a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas is priced at $2.23/g today while the most expensive is $3.99/g, a difference of $1.76/g. The lowest price in the state today is $2.23/g while the highest is $ 3 . 9 9 / g , a d i ff e r e n c e o f $1.76/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 0.7 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.89/g today. The national average is up 1.8 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.13/g higher than a year ago. Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $2.81/g, down 1.3 cents per gallon from last week's $2.82/g. San Antonio- $2.41/g, up 2.5 cents per gallon from last week's $2.39/g. Austin- $2.48/g, down 0.5 cents per gallon from last week's $2.48/g. "The nation's gas prices perked up again last week as oil prices advanced to fresh multiyear highs on Covid improvements overseas and the switch to summer gasoline, which is basically now complete," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "Last week saw the national average hit its highest level in two years, and with continued recovery in gasoline demand, the increase in price is likely to continue into the future. Americans may now want to brace themselves for the possibility of a $3/gal national average in the weeks ahead, as demand remains strong as Americans take to the roads. The question going forward is how much demand will continue to recover and risewill it lead to record summer gasoline demand? We indeed may see some weeks with new records as Americans get in their cars this summer- but the question is how many will do so? That will determine how much higher prices will go." GasBuddy is the authoritative voice for gas prices and the only source for station-level data spanning nearly two decades. Unlike AAA's once daily survey covering credit card transactions at 100,000 stations and the Lundberg Survey, updated once every two weeks based on 7,000 gas stations, GasBuddy's survey updates 288 times every day from the most diverse list of sources covering nearly 150,000 stations nationwide, the most comprehensive and up-to-date in the country. Ye s , I ’ m t h e o n e responsible for putting out those magnetic BUMPER STICKERS that you see at Walmart and all over Montgomery County. I live in Walden and my name is Jud Schleper. With your help and generosity, we have distributed over 3,000 signs, had a billboard sign on State Route 105 for 4-6 months which was donated by Dr. Timothy Gardner and I thank him. Also a big thank you goes to Roy Morton of Conroe Welding Supply in Conroe, TX. He and all of his staff and patrons have supported this message of “One Nation Under God” for 4-5 years. Another big thank you goes to Larry Alexander of St. Mary’s Church in Brenham TX with the help of the Knights of Columbus organization. dream was to distribute Bumper Stickers that said “One Nation Under God” throughout Montgomery County and other areas. Father Ed Kucera, Pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Plantersville and St. Joseph’s in Stoneham, TX donated the beginning funds for my dream. I had already designed the bumper stickers and worked with INKDOTS for pricing. Distribution of the bumper stickers is totally nonprofit and have been distributed since 2015. The signs are displayed and available in St. Mary’s gift shop and v a r i o u s S t . M a r y ’s functions. My newest supplier in the area is JIMS H A R D WA R E i n Montgomery, TX. Thank you to owner, Jim Ward. The good news is that the bumper stickers from INKDOTS are $2.00. Donations are asked for but if you can’t afford to do this, take one to spread the dream. All donations are valued and are used for

more bumper stickers. This is “Totally Nonprofit”. Believe it or not with a little help from me, Father Kucera, and St. Mary’s help, the dream of displaying the bumper stickers has gone on for 7 years. Politicians need to know that Christians in the USA are strong believers in “One Nation Under God”. My dream, my mission, is

to distribute 10,000 bumper stickers. This might be a challenge since I am in my 80s. A big thank you to all of you who have supported this special campaign, “ONE NATION UNDER GOD”. Anyone interested in helping this dream, contact me at juds@consolidated.net

CONROE, Texas – CASA Child Advocates of Montgomery County recently hosted ribbon cuttings and tours of their new Connection Corner at their office in downtown Conroe. On Friday, April 9, 2021, Junior League of T h e Wo o d l a n d s a n d representatives of the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development were honored. Then on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, Lynda and Russ MacBeth and Ralph and Shirley A lexander were also recognized for their donation of a playhouse for use in the space. Children who have experienced trauma have changes to their brain and body chemistry, including children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect and placed into the foster care system. These changes mean that many traditional methods of parenting are not effective when interacting with children in foster care. Most individuals learn parenting skills by the way they were parented, unless given the opportunity to learn different skills. C A S A C h i l d A d v o c a t e s o f Montgomery County aims to teach new parenting skills to biological parents, foster parents and kinship placements using a methodology called Trust Based Relational Intervention, or “TBRI”, d e v e l o p e d a t Te x a s Christian University’s Karyn Purvis Institute for Child Development. CASA has six TBRI® Practitioners on staff to coach parents and caregivers, one of very few CASA programs in the state with such a large number of staff trained in TBRI. Before the Connection Corner opened, however, the organization was limited in the ways they could help caregivers in this area; CASA practitioners could only offer support over the phone and by providing books and resources. “This space is important because it gives us the opportunity to work with children and caregivers and teach different ways to build connection, different parenting and childcare strategies,” said CASA

Suggestions for Mindful Eating: Salt and Vinegar Zucchini Chips Food for Thought Diana Anderson

DianaCAnderson@ gmail.com

Get ready for the most perfect zucchini chip you’ve ever made! And don’t let the name fool you. These salt and vinegar zucchini chips are actually low sodium and sacrifice zero flavor doing it! Crispy, tangy, salty, and even low calorie and low carb! They do take about 2 hours to bake, but the active time is only about 10 minutes, so you can get busy doing something else. Ingredients Zucchini Zucchini is low in calories, which, along with its relatively neutral flavor,

makes it perfect to make just about anything. I’ve sometimes seen it substituted for apples. Zucchini isn’t over the top in terms of the nutrients it contains, though it does have some vitamin C. I love zucchini for its highwater content/low calories, and for how easy it is to grow – or if you don’t garden, for how widely available it is at grocers and its fiber. In this recipe, you’re essentially dehydrating the zucchini, so the water content will be quite low. But that’s what ensures the crispness! A perfect substitute for fried potatoes! Apple Cider Vinegar Apple cider vinegar is pretty much my allpurpose vinegar. A must for salt and vinegar chips,

its tangy quality tends to play on your taste buds similar to salt. So, I was able to use less salt for a heart healthier treat. Olive Oil My go-to oil. High in monounsaturated fats, it’s one of the heart healthiest oils you can get. Extra virgin olive oil is considered the best. It’s not great for high temperature cooking. It does work great in these zucchini chips though, because you cook them at a low temperature! If you want a great allpurpose oil, regular olive oil is good. You can also use grapeseed oil or avocado oil. A neutrally flavored oil is best for this recipe. Pepper Black pepper is known for its high antioxidant content and has been used

T h e C A S A Connection Corner began as a dream more than two years ago. It was envisioned as a space where parents and caregivers could not only be taught new skills for building connection with children, but also have the opportunity to practice those skills with the children. Funds from the Junior League provided nearly

everything in the new C o n n e c t i o n C o r n e r, including toys, books, and games. A special playhouse was donated to CASA by Lynda and Russ MacBeth and Ralph and Shirley Alexander, donors and supporters of the organization and its cause. for centuries as a flavor enhancer, immune booster, and treatment for various conditions. In fact, it was used as a currency in Europe. Use pepper as much as you like! Salt Okay, so salt isn’t something I use much of in my recipes. But what are salt and vinegar chips without salt?! Besides, a little is fine, and this recipe does have only a little. Just enough to taste! Dill Dried dill is optional in this recipe. It’s not really traditional in salt and vinegar chips. Fresh dill would be great, too. It kind of brings out a pickle-like flavor with the vinegar. If you don’t care for it, leave it out. Herbs and spices, like dill, are high in

How to Make Salt and Vinegar Zucchini Chips Easy peasy zucchini squeezy! First, preheat your oven to 225 degrees F. Slice your zucchini very thin. Like around 1/16th of an inch. The thicker they are, the longer they’ll take to bake. Use a mandolin slicer to get nice, even, paper-thin slices! Make sure to coat both sides of each slice. Then arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet, or

Special Advocates (CASA) speak up for the best interests of children who have been removed from their home and are under the Court's jurisdiction. two, lined with parchment paper. They can touch each other, but not overlap. They’ll shrink down considerably as they bake. Bake them for at least two hours. Depending on the type of baking sheet you have and the zucchini thickness, they may take longer. Keep an eye on them around the two-hour mark. Once the zucchini chips come out the oven, sprinkle them immediately with as much dill as you like (or no dill!), fresh or dried. Cool completely, and store in an airtight container. If there is a lot of humidity in the air, the chips may lose their crisp quickly, but will still delight!

Comments According to Doc

Welcome To Tomorrow! -the Future Is With Us! Walden Happenings By Doc Fennessy The opinions expressed in this editorial do not necessarily reflect those of MCN.

Folks this week’s article review is one of the many in the area of futurism, ‘it forecasts what will be discovered, what will be developed, and what will be replaced. The article is incredibly challenging intellectually but simple possibility to the nature of the world we live in today. The article was formally published on LINKED-IN published January 22, 2019 and republished on March 15, 2021 in the Sunday Family Humor Review. The author is RAVINDRA KIRTI, Associate Marketing Director at Patriot Store, Calcutta - BW Business World, Ex- Murugappa, Ex- Times of India. In the following article all the words are the unabridged words of the author Ravindra Kirti throughout the entire article. Folks, the article includes some very interesting predictions that are happening now. “I take disagreement with the prediction that drilling for oil will be obsolete, because most predictions refer to oil as only having the function to refining into gasoline for motor cars. Other than the numerus, domestic products including lubricants and the development of plastics, the need for drilling oil continues to serve its purpose, etc., etc., etc.. Folk’s, Author Ravindra Kirti begins his article by saying that, “All of the following will likely become reality in the next 10-20 years. Many of us won’t see the changes, but [our kids and grandkids probably will]. (1.)-Basic auto repair shops will disappear. Read on to know why. (2.) A gas/diesel engine has 20,000

individual parts. An electrical motor has only 20 parts. Electric cars are sold with lifetime guarantees and are repaired only by dealers. It takes only 10 minutes to remove and replace an electric motor. (3.)- Faulty electric motors are not repaired in the dealership but are sent to a regional repair shop that repairs them with robots (4.)- Your electric motor malfunction light goes on, and so you drive up to what looks like a car wash, and your car is towed through while you have a cup of coffee and out comes your car with a new electric motor! (5.)- Gas pumps will go away. (6.)- Street corners will have meters that dispense electricity. Companies will install electrical recharging stations; in fact, they’ve already started in the developed world. (7.)- Smart major auto manufacturers have already designated money to start building new plants that build only electric cars. (8.)-Coal industries will go away. Gasoline/oil companies will go away. Drilling for oil will stop. Say goodbye to OPEC! The middle east is in trouble. (9.)- Homes will produce and store more electrical energy during the day than they use, and will sell it back to the grid. The grid stores it and dispenses it to industries that are high electricity users. Has anybody seen the Tesla roof? (10.)- A baby of today will see personal cars only in museums. The FUTURE is approaching faster than most of us can handle. (11.)- In 1998, Kodak had 170,000 employees and sold 85% of all photo paper worldwide. Within just a few years, their business model disappeared, and they went bankrupt. Who would have thought of that ever happening? (12.)- What happened to Kodak and

Polaroid will happen in a lot of industries in the next 5-10 years ... and most of us don't see it coming. (13.)- Did you think in 1998 that 3 years later you'd NEVER take pictures on film again? W i t h t o d a y ’ s smartphones, who even has a camera these days? (14.)- Yet digital cameras were invented in 1975. The first ones only had 10,000 pixels but followed Moore's law – that technological capacity will DOUBLE every year. So as with all exponential technologies, it was a disappointment for a time, before it became 'way superior' and became mainstream in only a few short years. (15.)- It will now happen again (but much faster) with Artificial Intelligence (AI), health, autonomous and electric cars, education, 3D printing, agriculture and jobs. (16.)- Forget the book, “Future Shock”; welcome to the 4th Industrial Revolution. (17.)- Software has disrupted and will continue to disrupt most traditional industries in the next 5-10 years. (18.)- UBER is just a software tool; it doesn't own any cars, and is now the biggest taxi company in the world! Ask any taxi drivers if they saw that coming. (19.)- Airbnb is now the biggest hotel company in the world, although they don't own any properties. Ask Hilton Hotels if they saw that coming. (20.)- Artificial Intelligence: Computers become exponentially better in understanding the world. This year, a computer beat the best Go player in the world, 10 years earlier than expected. (21.)- In the USA, young lawyers already don't get jobs Because of computers, you can get legal advice (so far for right now, the basic stuff) within seconds, with 90% accuracy – compared with 70% accuracy when done

by humans. So, if you study law, stop immediately. There will be 90% fewer lawyers in the future, (what a thought!). Only omniscient specialists will remain. (22.)- Computer programs already help nurses diagnosing cancer, and the programs are 4 times more accurate than human nurses. (23.)- Facebook now has pattern recognition software that can recognize faces better than humans. In 2030, computers will become more intelligent than humans...COMPUTERS C A N B E UNPLUGGED...OR SHOT!!!!! (24.)- Autonomous cars: In 2018 the first selfdriving cars are already here. In the next 2 years, the entire industry will start to be disrupted. You won’t WANT to own a car anymore as you will call a car with your phone; it will show up at your location and drive you to your destination. (25.)- You will not need to park it. You will pay only for the driven distance and you can be productive while driving the very young children of today will never get a driver's license and will never own a car. (26.)- This will change our cities because we will need 90-95% fewer cars. We can transform former parking lots into green parks. (27.)- About 1.2 million people die each year in car accidents worldwide including distracted or drunk driving. We now have one accident every 60,000 miles. With autonomous driving that will drop to 1 accident in 6 million miles. That will save more than a million lives worldwide each year. (28.)- Some traditional car companies will doubtless go bankrupt. They will try the evolutionary approach and just build a better car, while tech companies (Tesla, Apple, Google) will do the revolutionary approach and build a computer on wheels.

Author Ravindra Kirti is a highly recognized international Futurist who has forecast numerous changes and developments in the future of the worlds economic, business and social-political world.

(29.)- Look at what Volvo is doing right now; no more internal combustion engines in their vehicles starting this year – with the 2019 models using all-electric or hybrid only, with the intent of phasing out the hybrid models. (30.)- Many engineers from Volkswagen and Audi are completely terrified of Tesla – and they should be. Look at all the companies offering allelectric vehicles. That was unheard of only a few years ago. (31.)- Insurance companies will have massive trouble because, without accidents, the costs will become cheaper. Their auto insurance business model will disappear. (32.)- Real estate will change. If you can work from home (or from literally anywhere), people will abandon their towers to move far away to more beautiful affordable locations... (33.)- Electric cars will become mainstream about 2030. Cities will be less noisy because all new cars will run on electricity.

(34.)- Cities will have much cleaner air as well. (35.)- Electricity will become incredibly cheap and clean. (36.)- Solar production has been on an exponential curve for 30 years, but you can now s e e t h e b u rg e o n i n g impact. And it’s just getting ramped up (37.)-Fossil energy companies are desperately trying to limit access to the grid to prevent competition from home solar installations; but that simply cannot continue - technology will take care of that strategy. (38.)- Health: "Tricorder X" will be announced this year. There are companies which will build a medical device (called the Tricorder from Star Trek) that works with your phone – taking your retina scan, your blood sample, and you breathe into it. It then analyses 54 biomarkers that will identify nearly any disease. There are dozens of phone apps out right now for health. WELCOME TO TOMORROW! – some of it actually arrived a few years ago.

Texas State Senator

My Five Cents...

Robert Nichols

A monthly column from Sen. Robert Nichols by Sen. Robert Nichols, Senate District 3

Last week, the House passed its version of the state budget for the next two years. It differs in some significant ways from the budget the Senate passed. In order to reconcile our differences, we'll convene a conference committee with 5 members from each chamber to work out the details. I'm honored to once again serve as a conferee for the state budget.

Devotional Mother - A Woman Of Beauty With an Endless Love for All Spreading the Word

By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net

I know many friends who fit into the category of this title for next Sunday, April 9th. They are praying for family and friends. They are active, still, in the lives of their children and their prayers never cease for h o m e , f a m i l y, a n d friends. The Lord’s day is very important to them, and they attend real or online church services,

faithfully. However, most important for each one is their tenacious grip on God as they firmly believe He will never leave them or forsake them – no matter what o c c u r s . T h a t ’s w h a t makes these women so beautiful. All beauty stems from the heart. It comes from deep within our soul and spirit. It’s like honey to the bees: they take in the nectar (honey) from the flowers to produce their own honey for the hive. So we “take in” the LORD to help others know how lovely He and Jesus and the Holy Spirit

Not all women grow up in peace and safety,, but those who find the Lord early in life are protected in many ways by those who know Him. We pray for the less fortunate, who can overcome dire circumstances in life, as they are raised by godly women. Jesus pointed out, several times, that a woman was to be loved, not hurt or disrespected in any way. If we, as women and mothers have

the love of the Lord in our hearts, then our gentle and quiet spirit will be a blessing to all others – in any circumstances. Even God, at the 2nd chapter of the Bible, Exodus 20:12, says this: “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you. “ Know this about a m o t h e r ’s l o v e : I t i s awesome, amazing, supportive, protecting and limitless! Community Diving into History: Exploring the Excavation of a Shipwreck How did a 17th century French shipwreck become one of the most significant stories in early Texas history? When an explorer set sail for the Mississippi River in 1684 on Ship La Belle, his plan was to claim new territory for France. The ship instead sailed into Matagorda Bay, only to eventually sink. 300 years later the ship’s resting place was discovered, instigating an extraordinary excavation and preservation effort. Exploring a riveting tale of nautical adventure, La Salle’s shipwreck will be the topic of discussion on May 6 at 6:30 pm when the Friends of the Sam

Houston State Natural History Collections host Te x a s a r c h a e o l o g i s t , James E. Bruseth. As the former director of the archaeology division for the Texas Historical Commission, Bruseth will speak about his experiences conducting the most remarkable archaeological excavation in Texas history. He will share how archaeologists from the commission located and excavated what Smithsonian Magazine called one of the most important shipwreck discoveries ever made in North America. Bruseth’s 2005 book, “From a Watery Grave”

(coauthored with his wife Toni Turner) recounts the discovery and excavation of La Belle, and won two national awards. His newest book, “La Belle: The Archaeology of a Seventeenth-Century S h i p o f N e w Wo r l d Colonization” (co-edited with Amy Borgens, Brad Jones, and Eric Ray), won the 2017 Keith Muckelroy Memorial Award from the international Nautical Archaeology Society. The free event is open to the public and will take place at the Sam Houston State Natural History Collections, located at 710 University Avenue, H u n t s v i l l e , Te x a s . Facemasks are required.

New Book By Local Author Kathy Day Faulkner is thrilled to finally see the fruits of her labor in book form. She Asked Crazy Horse Why, a historical fiction for children ages eight and above, is now available at Amazon.com in both paperback and eBook formats. Ms. Faulkner foresees her book as supplemental reading material for middle grade students. The main character of her novel is a young, impetuous Lakota girl who is questioning life at a time when rapid changes are occurring for her people. She has many questions for

her cousin, Crazy Horse, a famous Lakota warrior. Kathy lives in Cape Conroe, a Montgomery County subdivision, part of each year and the remainder in South Dakota near the setting of her novel. She grew up in the Dakotas and is quite familiar with geographical details included in her book. For twenty years, she was a teacher and administrator in her home area school system, where she interacted with Lakota children and families. “My book is new,” she said, “but this story has been in my heart for years.”

Years ago, when Kathy was full-time Cape Conroeite, she formed a writer’s group that still meets monthly at the Charles B Stewart West Branch Library in Montgomery. However, they are presently meeting virtually. “These accomplished writers were so encouraging and helpful as I worked chapter by chapter through the book,” says Kathy. If anyone wishes more information about the Wr i t e r s B y T h e L a k e group, please contact the library.
