The Texans After 25 Years In The Restaurant Texas Dropped Eight in a Business In Montgomery—Now, Weekly Row Losing Gas Prices A Well-Earned Retirement to the Miami (November 8, 2021) - Texas gas prices are unchanged in the past week, averaging $3.05/g today, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Gas prices in Texas are 15.7 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.29/g higher than a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas is priced at $2.53/g today while the most expensive is $3.68/g, a difference of $1.15/g. The lowest price in the state today is $2.53/g while the highest is $3.68/g, a difference of $1.15/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 1.8 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.41/g today. The national average is up 15.1 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.31/g higher than a year ago. Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $3.09/g, down 5.7 cents per gallon from last week's $3.15/g. San Antonio- $2.91/g, down 0.6 cents per gallon from last week's $2.92/g. Austin- $2.97/g, down 1.6 cents per gallon from last week's $2.99/g. "Last week saw oil prices briefly fall back under $80 for the first time in weeks. While it wasn't enough to provide much relief last week, we should see small declines this week in a majority of the country, thanks to the corresponding drop in wholesale gasoline prices," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for G a s B u d d y. " A t O P E C ' s monthly meeting last week, the cartel held firm to the small increases they agreed to in July, raising November production by 400,000 barrels per day. With President Biden still mulling over options to help push gas prices down, we could continue to see some volatility in oil prices. I don't immediately see a large decline or surge coming in the run up to Thanksgiving, but U.S. gasoline demand does remain strong. Levels are currently rivaling September demand, so we know high prices aren't significantly curbing consumption." GasBuddy is the authoritative voice for gas prices and the only source for station-level data spanning nearly two decades. Unlike AAA's once daily survey covering credit card transactions at 100,000 stations and the Lundberg Survey, updated once every two weeks based on 7,000 gas stations, GasBuddy's survey updates 288 times every day from the most diverse list of sources covering nearly 150,000 stations nationwide, the most comprehensive and up-to-date in the country. GasBuddy data is accessible at http://FuelInsights.GasBuddy.c om. SOURCE GasBuddy

Nancy and Lloyd Ashbaker have spent the last 25 years providing great food to Montgomery area residents and visitors to this quaint town. They recently hosted an open house at their Old Montgomery Steakhouse at 204 McGown Street in downtown Historic Montgomery to introduce the restaurant’s new owner. Long-time customers, city employees and other local business owners gathered to thank them for their service and hometown atmosphere for 2.5 decades and to toast the retiring couple as well as to celebrate the restaurant’s continuity. As the Ashbakers begin to enjoy their retirement, the customers of the Old Montgomery Steakhouse will continue enjoying great food in this, their favorite place in the very capable hands of the new owner. The restaurant ownership has changed hands, from Army Veteran, Lloyd, to Navy Veteran, Wayne Kung. Mr. Kung is an 8th generation restauranteur with many years of restaurant experience, as well as years of grilling steaks at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in San Antonio—bringing that franchise back to prominence. Don’t worry, though, while Wayne’s
steaks will rival the taste, quality and proper doneness of Ruth’s Chris, the prices will not be anywhere close to those

By: James M. Rankin, Sportswriter Montgomery County News The old saying that it can get even worst is wrong; it can get worst. The Houston Texans are on a downward slide with no solution in sight. The Houston Texans squandered a victory against another 1-7 struggling franchise, the Miami Dolphins, 17-9. The long-awaited return o f q u a r t e r b a c k Ty r o d Taylor was a swing and a miss as he threw three (3) interceptions including a bone headed flip to a defensive player as he was going out of bounds that was intercepted and covert to a touchdown later in the quarter. He finished the day with twenty-four (24) completions on forty-three (43) attempts for two hundred and forty (240) yards. He was not able to get his team in the endzone; despite the gallant effort of the defense which produced five (5) turnovers. The game was one for the record books as both teams produced more turnovers in one game than any other game in the 2021 season. Texans’ wide receiver Brandin Cooks had six (6) receptions for fifty-six (56) yards. The offense unit was anemic and just was painful to watch. The only one who contributed to the losing effort was place kicker Ka’imi Fairbaim who connected on three (3) field goals. Texans’ linebacker Tavierre Thomas led the team in tackles with six (6) solo and two (2) assists along with Neville Hewitt with five (5) solo and four (4) assists. In listening to Coach David Culley at the press conference, it is apparent that he has no answers for this team. He does not even carry a clip board, so just how involved is he in making the right decision to move this team onto the path of success? General Manager Nick Caseril seemed to be focused on a process and not the results of the team. From top to bottom in this organization, there does not seem to be a sense of urgency which is a critical element in leading a successful endeavor. In other AFC South division action, the Indianapolis Colts grounded the New York Jets 45-30, Tennessee Titans defeat the LA Rams 28-16 and even the Jacksonville Jaguars pulled out a surprise victory over the Buffalo Bills 9-6. The Houston Texans are firmly at the bottom of their division. The Texans have a bye this week, so hopefully they will regroup, refocus, and recommit to bringing Texans’ fans a team that this city can be proud of in the NFL. The Texans take on the Titans in Tennessee next week, so read all about it in your hometown paper.

Suggestions for Mindful Eating: The Korean Sauce You Didn’t Know You Needed Food for Thought Diana Anderson
DianaCAnderson@ gmail.com
M o v e o v e r , Sriracha—there’s another must-have Asian sauce in town. It’s called gochujang, and until I tasted this brick-red paste, I didn’t know I needed it. Now I do, and I suggest that you do, too. Gochujang is a Korean condiment, and it’s a flavor bomb. It’s a sludgy, sticky, spicy paste made from chile peppers, glutinous (sticky) rice, and fermented soybeans. It’s sweet, smoky, salty, and a tad funky, thanks to the fermented soybeans. A little dab goes a long way, adding umami-rich flavor and fireworks to sauces, marinades, soups, and stews. The first time I tasted gochujang, it was in a thick sauce drizzled over shredded pork in lettuce

Season the chicken thighs with salt. Place the chicken thighs in a large bowl or plastic container. Gochujang Chicken Pour in the marinade. Turn the chicken to thoroughly Thighs A c t i v e t i m e : 1 0 coat, rubbing some of the
wraps. Since then, I’ve spooned gochujang into marinades and sauces for chicken, meat, tofu, and roasted vegetables. Like other spicy chile condiments, gochujang is potent. It’s meant to provide a boost of flavor, not to be served straight up. Mix gochujang with other ingredients that amplify its flavors and smooth its heat, such as soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, and citrus juice, for a balance of salt, sweet, acid, and heat. Gochujang is available in Asian markets, the international section of w e l l - s t o c k e d supermarkets, and online. Depending on the brand, the heat level will vary, so be sure to taste a tiny bit before adding it to your food. Once opened, gochujang can be stored in your refrigerator for up to one year.
quickly an there was minimal parking, necessitating the move into its present much larger location to the relief of their loyal and new customers, who no longer had to wait in line as long to be seated. The Old Montgomery Steakhouse has always been open 7 days a week and has been the most popular place in town to go for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It isn’t unusual to see herds of motorcycles in the parking lot on weekends and work trucks every day, all day, plus school bus drivers enjoying a relaxing meal between bus runs. You may also occasionally see committee members gather for breakfast to work on event planning, then stay and visit comfortably until well after the lunch crowd
start coming in. That’s what makes a smalltown restaurant a great value to the community. Wayne Kung will keep that hometown feel, and for a time the same menu for a time before making some changes to reflect his own ideas and recipes while keeping the regulars happy to find their favorite entrees still on the menu. He said he wants “…to put the ‘steak’ back in ‘steakhouse’ and make some changes to the kids’ menu… maybe adding a prime rib day.” I’m sure the Steakhouse customers will miss seeing Nancy and Lloyd, and heir grandson, Brittain, but the waitstaff and kitchen staff will still be on duty…including the cook who has been with the Ashbakers for all these 25 years. See you there!

6 Things to Remember When Markets Fall A weekly column by Kent Pendleton normal. While the length of market contractions varies, periods of growth & expansion are usually waiting on the other side. The markets have proven remarkably resilient over the long term, & while returns can be quite volatile y e a r - t o - y e a r, t h e y ’ r e generally positive over multi-year periods. 2. Don’t panic. Letting emotions dictate your investing strategy is a risk you shouldn’t take. Short-term decisions can have long-term consequences on your portfolio. Being patient can pay dividends. 3. Know your portfolio. Understand your investments & how specific
assets represent different goals & outcomes. Keep in mind your risk tolerance & investment timeline, & if either has changed, consider talking to your financial advisor about rebalancing your portfolio. Diversification can potentially help balance risk during a downturn & mitigate extreme swings in value. 4. Stay the course. Remember your financial plan & long-term goals & stick to them. A disciplined investment approach is a sound strategy for handling market downturns & will likely enable you to participate when the markets rebound. 5. Consider opportunities.
Working with your financial advisor, determine whether periods of volatility are a good time to take advantage of investment opportunities in line with your long-term plan. 6. You’re not alone. Your financial advisor is available to answer your questions & provide help when you need it. He or she can guide you through difficult markets & be the independent voice that helps you stay focused on your long-term goals. Investing involves risk & investors may incur a profit or a loss. Past performance may not be indicative of future results. Diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss.
FACT OR FICTION?
TRUE. Anyone who has ever tried this found out very quickly that it doesn’t work. There are options available that will work but tomato juice isn’t one of them. * You can only be stung by a bee once and then it dies. NOT TRUE. Let me clarify. This is true for honey bees but honey bees make up a very small percentage of all bee species. All other bee species can sting you over and over. Ouch! * Rabbits LOVE carrots. NOT TRUE. Sure, they’ll eat them but if given a choice, rabbits prefer leafy vegies. Sure, Bugs Bunny is always seen eating a carrot and perhaps that is how this myth got started but in reality, carrots are not a favorite. * The age of a ladybug can be determined by counting the black spots on the wings. Others think the number of black spots indicate how many months will pass before meeting their true love. NOT TRUE.
Maintain your composure – & long-term focus – when volatility emerges. It can be unsettling for investors when their portfolios & the markets start heading into the red. Here are six investing basics to keep in mind during volatile times. 1. Periods of volatility are normal. All markets move in cycles, & periods of steep contraction are completely
By Cheryl Conley Sometimes we hear things and we just assume they’re correct. When we hear them as children we can go through our entire lives believing them. We even pass that information on to our own children. Let’s dispel some of those old wives’ tales or myths that we’ve heard about animals. * The #1 myth I hear is that you should never touch a baby bird because you’ll leave your scent on them, and mama bird will reject them. NOT TRUE. It’s never good to touch baby birds at any time unless you are rescuing the bird. If this is the case, the baby should be taken to a wildlife organization. * You can get warts if you touch a toad. NOT TRUE. Toads don’t have warts so
passing them to a human would be impossible. Toads have little glands that cover their bodies that look like warts. They secrete a foul tasting, toxic, antibiotic fluid that protects them from predators and illnesses. * Have you ever seen a picture of an opossum hanging upside down by the tail? In real life, this is NOT TRUE. Their tails are very important and aid in balance and holding on to things but they do not hang by them. * Touching a butterfly’s wings will cause it to die. NOT TRUE. Butterflies look delicate but they’re actually tough little creatures. Their wings have thousands of scales on them and losing a few here and there may slow them down and make it a little harder to
fly but it doesn’t kill them. Afterall, they do have to withstand wind, storms, brushing up against plants and bushes and spider webs. Please don’t touch them, though. If they lose too many scales, they can die. * Animals have thicker coats in the fall if a severe winter is expected. NOT TRUE. The rate of hair growth and thickness has nothing to do with weather. * Ostriches bury their heads in the sand because they believe if they can’t see you, you can’t see them. People say it’s a defense mechanism. NOT TRUE. Ostriches don’t stick their heads in the sand. How would they breathe? * Use tomato juice if you get sprayed by a skunk. It will remove the odor. NOT
Goat Heads, Molasses and Sugar Ants Weekly Column by Doyle Driver doyledriver@yahoo.com As a ten-year old boy during WWII things were hard to come by. For instance I couldn’t have a new bicycle, for there were none. And I understood that! Everything was contributed to winning the war. Every loose piece of scrap metal was important for the cause. So the bicycle I got was of an early vintage without fenders. But that was okay by me it suited me fine. The tires were thin and the inner tubes donned patches of various and sundry varieties, but it still was the best transportation possible for visiting Jimmy Tom and Charles. They were brothers and my good friends from the farm a mile down the road. We spent many hours riding our bikes and just hanging out. Keep in mind all kinds of tires were rationed and tires to fit my bike were nonexistent. It was years before Never Leak was invented, but Daddy had an idea to keep Goat head stickers from spoiling my fun. Farms and fencerows were populated with those honery Goat head looking stickers, and a menace to thin bike tires. Daddy’s Idea came from of all things “Mary Jane Ribbon Cane Syrup”, At the beginning of WWII our grocer told his customers that Ribbon Cane Syrup
supplies would no longer be available. So Daddy bought a twelve-gallon case. It barely lasted for the duration and I’ve never seen it since. But that’s another story. My bike tires had so many Goat head punctures I had to carry a hand pump to keep them aired up. Daddy decided to put a pint of Ribbon Cane in each tube, and for the most part it worked. From that day forward I could ferret out a colony of sugar ants anywhere on the farm. Air remained in the tubes for a week or so before pumping them up became necessary. Bingo even enjoyed a lick or two on the seeping tires once the ants were cleared away. The Ribbon Cane worked fine except in winter. Then the thick substance solidified in one area of the tube and stayed there. Riding in winter vibrated the whole bike fiercely, but it was still reliable transportation. Daddy jokingly advised me to carry a couple of cold biscuits along just in case I got hungry. “You can always wipe the tires down with a biscuit for a snack”. The tires held up for a couple of years and I visited my friends every few days. As winter and spring faded riding became more enjoyable when the Syrup was more evenly
distributed. One hot July afternoon Mother gave me permission to visit Jimmy Tom and Charles for an hour. Speeding along the hard dirt road I was exceeding my personal best bicycle speed when my front tire blew. Mary Jane was flung far and wide covering the roadway, bicycle and me! I don’t recall what happened to the bike for tires were still nonexistent. About a year later I bought a calf with the saving stamps my sister Eileen had been sending me each week during the war. I sold the calf and bought myself a brand new Raleigh Bike. I used it for a few years until High School and then sold it to the young son of a family who came each year and helped Daddy harvest Cotton. They lived in our dugout or storm cellar. One evening about suppertime we heard a tremendous commotion in the cellar. It seems that Junior had ridden his bike down the steps and into Mama’s dinner table and onto syrup and pancakes. Seems as though my bike tires had an affinity for sweets! Driver is a native Texan born and reared in Hardeman County. He can b e r e a c h e d a t doyledriver@yahoo.com

Devotional QUIET - PEACE - VALUABLE COMMODITIES IN THESE TIMES Spreading the Word
By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net
It’s a bit amazing to me how many noises we have around us at home that rob us of our peace. Some are for communicating, working, and cleaning, like washers, driers, T.V., cell phones, P.C’s, boom boxes, and vacuums, and musical instruments. That’s not counting all outside noises of the neighborhoods; like school
busses, trash pick-ups, barking dogs, etc. I’m not saying we should be entirely free of noises, but we should work around those noises to find a time that’s free of noise as we pray and talk with the Lord. Every household is different, so prayers should take place when we can be quiet the most, in order to be with our Lord of Lords. And He’ll give us His undivided attention in the quiet place. For some, it may be in the middle of the day or night. It’s different for each of us.

will calm our spirit in our busy life. It we’re too busy, we may miss waving to a neighbor, or calling a sick friend, or talking or reading to our children about Jesus. Those gentle joys may last for a lifetime in a lonely life. Here is an older Celtic prayer that may give us a greater understanding of “quiet:” “Calm me, O Lord, as You stilled the storm, Still me, O Lord, keep me from harm. Let all the tumult within me cease, Enfold me, Lord, in Your peace.”
In my title, I call quietness and peace, a “commodity.” A commodity is defined as “a useful thing,” according to my Oxford American Dictionary. And so it is. Being quiet with God for just a very few minutes will refresh our body and spirit. Even God is mentioned through Psalm 23 as David declares this: “He (meaning the LORD) leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His Name’s sake.”
Psalm 23: 2a – 3. And in the New Testament, Jesus tells His disciples and us, before He is crucified: “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.” John 14:27. I hope these words of Jesus will give you much peace in this present world of illness, viruses, and loss of so many loved ones. God doesn’t want us to be full of fear in these times. He
does want us to pray for others who may be struggling with this pandemic. God does want us to b e s t r o n g p r a y er warriors so more can be saved and healed. James tells us, “The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” James 5:16b. It’s important to find a time with God where we can be quiet with prayers going forth. We have many things and people to pray for, but also, we must give God time to answer our prayers. As we listen, it

Cause No. 21-40925-P NOTICE TO ALL PERSONS HAVING CLAIMS AGAINST THE ESTATE OF MARK ERIC SALSBERRY, DECEASED
NOTICE OF APPLICATION OF ENTERGY TEXAS, INC. TO UPDATE ITS MARK TO MARKET RIDER CONSISTENT WITH THE COMMISSION'S ORDER IN DOCKET NO. 51095 On November 1, 2021, Entergy Texas, Inc. (“ETI”) filed an Application with Public Utility Commission of Texas (“Commission”) for approval to update its Mark to Market (“MTM”) Rider tariff consistent with the Commission's Order in Docket No. 51095. In Docket No. 51095, ETI sought and the Commission issued Order an approving ETI's initial MTM Rider tariff to provide customers with the credits specified in the Accounting Order issued in Docket No. 50540. The Accounting Order in Docket No. 50540 established the regulatory accounting treatment applicable to the tax effects resulting from a MTM tax accounting method election ETI proposed to make and subsequently made with respect to its power purchase agreements (the “ETI MTM Tax Position”). In addition, the Commission approved a methodology by which ETI will provide to customers the benefits associated with the ETI MTM Tax Position. Under this methodology, ETI will provide to customers guaranteed credits associated with the ETI MTM Tax Position regardless of the final determination on that tax position by the taxing authorities. Moreover, to the extent the taxing authorities ultimately accept ETI's MTM Tax Position, the Company will provide additional credits to customers. In the instant proceeding, ETI seeks Commission approval to update its MTM Rider tariff, consistent with the process described therein, to provide credits to customers for year 2022 consistent with the terms of the Commission's Accounting Order. This filing was made pursuant to Sections 14.001, 14.151, 32.001, and 36.003 of the Texas Utilities Code. Effect on Customer Classes All of ETI's Texas retail customers will ultimately be affected if the Commission grants the relief requested in this Application in that such customers will receive credits in accordance with the methodology approved in the Commission's Accounting Order in Docket No. 50540.
