Plummer, a Cat Friendly Veterinary Professional certified technician at the Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, offers somegeneralguidelinesto

help ensure that everyone will start off on the right paw

Importantly owners adopting a new cat should consider preparing for the pet’sarrival.

“Typically it can take uptoamonthforanewpet to adjust to the family and routine, as well as for the previous family members to adjust to the new cat,” Plummer said. “Cats that have experienced any type of trauma or are not socializedmaytakelonger to adjust to the new surroundings.”

“As new cats become more comfortable, they will interact with the family more and more,” Plummer said. “Every pet in the family should have its own quiet hiding space torest,andeachcatshould have its own litter box, food and water bowls, and toys or other items that provide environmental enrichment.”

As for litter boxes, Plummersaysthereshould be one more than the number of cats in the house; for example, a three-cat household would ideally have four litter boxes located in different areasofthehome.

These necessities should be acquired before bringing the cat home

Purchasing new items that don’t smell of another animal and cleaning the cat’senvironmentalsowill helpthecattransitionwith minimalstress.

AccordingtoPlummer, another way to ease stress is to use feline pheromone diffusers or sprays, which bring a calming effect to new cats (and any other cats already in the household) during the transitionalperiod.

“Cats are natural hunters; their sense of smell is superior to ours,” Plummersaid.“Separating thenewcatinoneroomfor a short period of time and bringing it out for supervised interactions with the rest of the family can reduce stress for the new cat.”

While you’ll likely wanttobearoundyournew cat as much as possible, work and other daily

obligations typically require leaving the pet unsupervised for some portion of the day While pets are still becoming accustomed to each other, they should be separated when not under supervision.

Finally, within a week of bringing a new cat home, an appointment should be made with the family veterinarian for a check-up and to receive any vaccinations the pet mayrequire,ifthereareno other cats in the house. If there are other cats in the house, the new cat should visit the veterinarian before being introduced to thehousehold.

“Veterinary care is important for all pets, but especially new pets,” Plummer said. “Regular physical examinations and preventative care will help ensurealong,happylife.”

Tohelplearntheinsand outsoftakingcareofanew cat, Plummer also recommends making use of reliable resources like the Cat Friendly Homes website,whichisaffiliated with the American Association of Feline Practitioners.

By providing a gentle, warm welcome, your new furball will start to feel at home before you know it —andyou’llgrowusedto the mischief, love, and meowssoonenough,too.

Hunters Reminded to Report Their Harvest

AUSTIN – The Texas Park

Department (TPWD) wants to remind hunters to report their harvest during the upcoming antlerless deerseason,Nov 24-27.

Mandatory reporting is required for any antlerless deer harvested during the four-daydoeseason,along with any antlerless deer harvested during the archery youth only and muzzleloader seasons Within24hoursofharvest, hunters in the 21 counties listed below must report their harvest to TPWD using either the free My TexasHuntHarvestmobile app (for iOS andAndroid) or on the My Texas Hunt Harvestwebpage.

Counties required to reporttheirharvestinclude Austin, Bastrop, Caldwell, Colorado, Comal (East of I-35), De Witt, Fayette, Goliad (North of US 59), Gonzales, Guadalupe, Hays (East of I 35), Jackson (north of US 59), Karnes, Lavaca, Lee, Travis (East of I 35), Victoria (North of US 59), Waller Washington Wharton (North of US 59) andWilson.

Additionally, for the four counties that remain dedicated to archery-only hunting (Dallas, Grayson, Rockwall and Collin), huntersarenowrequiredto report all white-tailed deer harvests within 24 hours through the My Harvest HuntAppduringallwhitetailed deer seasons

Accurate reporting allows agency wildlife biologists

to properly study hunting impacts on local herds and develop more hunting opportunities.

TPWD reminds hunters that agency wildlife biologists and animal health officials are collecting and testing Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) samples from hunter-harvested deer to get a clearer picture of the prevalenceanddistribution ofthediseaseacrossTexas. Proactive monitoring improves the state’s response time to CWD detection and can greatly

reduce the risk of the diseasefurtherspreadingto neighboring captive and free-rangingpopulations.

Hunters in surveillance and containment zones must meet submission requirements of harvested CWD susceptible species. Additionally, hunters outside of established surveillance and containmentzonesareencouraged to voluntarily submit their harvest for testing at a check station, for free, before heading home from thefield.Hunterscanfinda map of TPWD check stations forallCWDzones on the TPWD website Hunters can also contact their local biologist to submitasample.
