MCTX Weekly National Clinical Challenge Sheriff Gas Prices Introduces New Program in Jail

(October 28, 2019) Texas gas prices have fallen 1.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.27/g today, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 13,114 stations. Gas prices in Texas are 7.9 cents per gallon lower than a month ago, yet stand 28.6 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas is priced at $1.99/g today while the most expensive is $3.19/g, a difference of $1.20/g. The lowest price in the state today is $1.99/g while the highest is $3.19/g, a difference of $1.20/g. The cheapest price in the entire country today stands at $1.75/g while the most expensive is $5.49/g, a difference of $3.74/g. The national average price of gasoline has fallen 5.1 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.58/g today. The national average is down 6.3 cents per gallon from a month ago, yet stands 22.4 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa$2.36/g, down 2.1 cents per gallon from last week's $2.38/g. San Antonio- $2.18/g, down 3.7 cents per gallon from last week's $2.21/g. Austin- $2.22/g, down 1.9 cents per gallon from last week's $2.24/g. “The air is getting crisp, the leaves falling, and for the third straight week the national average price of gasoline has too, " said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "Most states saw notable declines, while California and the Great Lakes states saw the largest dips. Solidly in the rear view are California's previous refinery issues that caused prices to soar, but now a new problem- filling up with the cheaper gasoline as power outages have cut access to hundreds of stations across the state. GasBuddy has again activated its emergency tracker for California, and this event is unlikely to impact gas prices, so long as refineries don't lose power. Across the rest of the country, the Great Lakes states saw prices fall far faster than wholesale prices, and a correction is likely in the region. With that exception, the nation should see a fourth straight week of decline with over three-quarters of stations passing along lower prices in the coming week."

Suggestions For Mindful Eating: White Chili Food for Thought Diana Anderson

DianaCAnderson@ gmail.com

I made a huge pot of chili – New Mexican style – for the Aggie football game last Saturday. While a large group was enjoying it when my 5th grade grandniece announced that it was good but not as good as her mom’s white chili. White chili? Never heard of it but it is indeed a thing. And a pretty good thing from the research I did.

This is indeed good news because I can’t think of anything easier and more adept at feeding a crowd than chili. Ingredients 2 (14.5-ounce) cans white beans 1 tablespoon avocado oil 1 medium jalapeno pepper, minced without the seeds 2 medium poblano peppers, chopped 1 large onion, chopped 4 garlic cloves, minced Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1-tablespoon ground

cumin 1 1/2 teaspoons ground coriander 1-teaspoon ancho chili powder 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth 2 limes, juiced, plus lime wedges, for serving 1 rotisserie chicken, skin removed and meat shredded 1/4 cup chopped cilantro leaves Sour cream, for topping Tortilla chips, coarsely crushed, for topping Directions 1. Drain and rinse the canned white beans. In a

medium bowl, mash half of the beans with a potato masher until chunky. Reserve the beans until needed. 2. Add the avocado oil to a large Dutch oven and heat it over medium-high heat. Add the peppers, onions, and garlic and sauté until soft and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Season the vegetables with salt, and pepper, to taste. Add the cumin, coriander, and chili powder and continue to sauté for 1 more minute to toast the spices. Stir in the chicken stock, and lime juice and

bring to a simmer. Add the beans and continue to simmer for 20 more minutes. 3. After 20 minutes of simmering, taste for seasoning, and adjust if necessary. Stir in the shredded rotisserie chicken and cilantro and simmer until heated through, about 5 more minutes. Serve the chili in individual bowls topped with a dollop of sour cream, crushed tortilla chips, and lime wedges. What is great about this recipe and most chili recipes for that matter is you can customize it.

Think about adding some avocado or shredded Monterrey Jack cheese as a garnish. You can add some frozen corn when you add the chicken stock. If you want more heat add some red pepper flakes to the jalapeno. Without the seeds the jalapeno does not have much spice. Of course you can get some boneless chicken thighs and breasts and roast them yourself instead of using the store bought chicken. I hope you try this and make it your own.

Tricky Treats: Protecting Your Pet from a Halloween Scare COLLEGE STATION, Oct. 25, 2019 – Halloween is an exciting holiday mar k ed b y co s tu mes , decorations, and treats that set the spooky scene. While these festivities may ensure a fun evening, they can also pose additional threats to your household pet. Dr. Christine Rutter, a clinical assistant professor

at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM), speaks to the dangers of pet poisoning on this holiday and how to react if intoxication does occur. “The clinical signs for intoxication are extremely varied,” Rutter said. “Most intoxications will cause a

sudden onset of signs, but these signs can range from subtle to severe. Altered b e h a v i o r, c l u m s i n e s s , vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, and s eizu r e ar e th e mo s t common signs that I see in relation to pet poisonings.” Halloween celebrations may introduce toxic foods and objects into your home that your pet would not be exposed to normally. “Most of the things we worry about at Halloween are things like candy (including chocolate), sugar-free gum, glow sticks, and items they get into at Halloween parties, like party foods, recreational drugs, and alcohol,” Rutter said. “Glow sticks aren’t actually toxic, but the fluid within them is irritating and pets (especially cats) will drool and be very upset if they open one.”

Rutter advises that pet owners who suspect their animal has ingested a toxic substance seek medical advice as soon as possible. “I recommend that owners contact their veterinarian or the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center hotline for advice about how to handle a potentially poisoned pet,” Rutter said. “An additional benefit is that the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center hotline provides owners with a case number that their veterinarian or a v e t e r i n a r y e m e rg e n c y doctor can use to call and speak directly to a toxicologist about the pet’s specific case, should the pet need to go to a hospital.” Even if the potentially poisoned pet is not exhibiting symptoms, Rutter recommends seeking medical help. If you are

unsure of whether your pet has ingested enough of a toxic substance for harm to be done, an expert should still be contacted as soon as possible. “I wouldn’t recommend the ‘wait and see’ plan. With toxins, limiting the animal’s absorption of the toxin before the pet is symptomatic is very important,” Rutter said. “If we can prevent problems before they happen, that’s going to be a lot more effective than trying to reverse clinical signs that are already present. Part of toxin management is minimizing the impact of the toxin.” It is imperative that pet owners remember that foods that are harmless to them—chocolate, sugarfree gum, party foods, and alcohol—pose a serious threat to the well-being of

their furry friend. “Families have to be very careful to limit exposure to hazards during the Halloween season. All candy and food items have to be kept out of an animal’s environment. Sometimes that means keeping candy in a refrigerator, microwave, or other closed space,” Rutter said. “It’s also a good idea to keep pets confined during Halloween parties and trickor-treating events. All of the new people, strangers in costume at the door, and access to tempting treats can be a recipe for anxiety, increased scavenging behavior, and exposure to toxins.” By The Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences

Donald Trump Was Not Crazy To Attempt To Purchase The Entire Territory of Greenland! Walden Happenings By Doc Fennessy The opinions expressed in this editorial do not necessarily reflect those of MCN.

It seems that earlier this month Donald Trump’s Business Corporation filed a formal proposition to Denmark in order to purchase the entire land of Greenland! People went wild! Is Donald Trump crazy? Buy the entire land of Greenland? “The Donald” is out of his mind; Greenland is about 80 percent always covered with ice and snow! “Is President Trump planning to import ice water from Greenland?” And so on! Wise-up folks, Businessman Donald Trump is a brilliant futurist and wise risk taker! The following was sent to me by News4Patriots Alert Managing Editor, Robert Boyd. Read it and be amazed that “THE DONALD” really does know what he is doing!!! IS TRUMP'S IDEA OF A C Q U I R I N G GREENLAND FOLLY OR GENIUS? President Donald Trump rolled the dice and landed on Greenland. Now he wants to acquire it. No, this is not a new version of Monopoly he's playing with Cabinet members in the Oval Office. It's real! It's strategic. Anyone who thought Trump

was joking when he floated the idea doesn't know him very well. Of course, it's probably impossible. But it's making for interesting water cooler conversations around the world. Although the offer was initially and officially rejected, you never know what the future holds with Donald Trump. FOLKS, DANISH PRIME MINISTER CALLS THE IDEA “ABSURD!” First let's take a look at Greenland. Then we'll examine why Trump wants to make a deal that Denmark P rime M inis ter M ette Frederiksen labeled as “absurd!” Greenland is the world's largest island at 811,000 square miles. Approximately 80 percent of the Danish territory is icecapped, located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. There's something that comes as a surprise to people who have not looked at a globe recently. It is part of the North American continent. For many years it has been more closely associated with Europe. E s p e c i a l l y N o r w a y, Denmark as well as Iceland. But it's actually in North America. THE UNITED STATES HAS AN AIRFORCE BASE IN GREENLAND. The population of Greenland is roughly 58,000. That makes it the least densely populated territory in the world. The majority of residents are Inuit. They are concentrated on the southwest coast of the island. Residents have been

self-governed for the past 40 years. Greenland is divided into five municipalities. One of the two unincorporated areas has Thule Air Base which is controlled by Denmark. But it's administered by the United States Air Force. The United States base has operated in Greenland since 1943. And thanks to a 1951 treaty, it's rent-free. We have a ballistic missile early warning system there. Plus, a satellite tracking system. GREENLAND’S NATURAL RESOURCES ARE THE KEY! Fishing and tourism are the country's two main economic drivers. But that's not what makes Trump intrigued about acquiring the island. But he's much more interested in the potential financial impact of the island's natural resources. These resources include zinc, copper, iron ore, coal and rare minerals. Nobody really knows how many resources exist. But the country's geopolitical influence is on the rise. Countries including China are very interested in it. As recently as last year, China proposed building new airports and mining facilities on Greenland. T H E I N T E R N AT I O N A L SHIPPING LINES ARE NOW OPENING! Another reason Greenland is coming into the spotlight in recent years is what's happening around it. With polar ice caps melting, North Atlantic shipping lanes are opening.

President Donald Trump as a highly intelligent and experienced “Futurist” cleverly attempted to purchase the entire island of Greenland! These lanes reduce travel times and expenditures. And they provide a way to “borrow” natural resources. Danish Chief Executive Frederiksen insists Greenland is not on the market. As an outcome, Trump cancelled a recent trip to meet with involved Danish officials. Many are criticizing Trump for even discussing the idea of acquiring Greenland. But President Harry Truman did the same thing in 1946. In fact, he proposed $100 million in gold for the island was ignored. Some say the country is worth at least $1Billion today. THERE IS A LONG TENDING VENTURE! Acquiring land from Denmark is not without precedent. In 1917, the United States got the Virgin Islands from the Danish Government for $25 million in gold. That would be about $500 million today. But even if Frederiksen were willing to consider anything, the negotiations could get very complicated. Iwan Morgan is with the University College of

London's Institute of the Americas. He said such a deal would involve treaties and legislative processes in Denmark. As well as in Greenland and the United States. The European Union would also want to get involved. And any potential gain would be years in the future. If any! IT SEEMS THAT THE GREENLAND CITIZENS ARE HOPEFUL! Even if it never happens, Greenland residents may benefit from the interest and publicity. Verner Hammeken is Chief executive of Greenland's Royal Arctic Line. He said that, “When you stimulate investment in an area like Greenland, magic wonders can happen in mining, tourism and infrastructure.” Greenland has only one commercial airport. And no roads between its 17 cities. If a deal leads to improvements in roads, airports, mines and tourism, that means job creation. That would be welcome in a country where unemployment is nine (9) percent. “We've seen that when the United States catches

interest in certain areas around the world, investments from private American companies will follow, but will not take decades,” said a Danish official. Much of Greenland is undeveloped, and the conditions are harsh. OKAY FOLKS, NOW WHAT DO YOU THINK B U S I N E S S M A N DONALD TRUMP WAS THINKING??? Back in 1867, the United States Secretary of State William Seward suggested acquiring Alaska from the Russian Empire. At the time of the $7.2 million deal, many Americans called it “SEWARD’S FOLLY”. In hindsight, it was a steal. And one of the most strategic moves the United States has ever made. If Donald Trump somehow succeeds in acquiring Greenland, will we eventually look at it the same way? Will we see repercussions or will we gain from a deal AS THE BEAT GOES ON???

“Billions of dollars are being invested in energy and petrochemical projects along the Texas Gulf Coast," said S & B President J.D. Slaughter. "It is imperative for our Texas economy that we have a skilled workforce that is ready and able to complete this important work. This bill enables

companies, like S&B, to invest in their people—to establish robust earnwhile-you-learn training programs that ensure employees have the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to deliver. And creates a pathway to empowering career opportunities for unemployed and under-

Brady, Cornyn, Cruz, and Crenshaw Urge FEMA to Approve New San Jacinto Mouth Bar Dredging Plan Conroe, TX Today, Congressman Kevin Brady (TX-08), along with Texas Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz and Representative Dan Crenshaw (TX-02), sent a letter to Acting FEMA Administrator Peter Gaynor requesting FEMA’s swift approval of the City of Houston’s new

San Jacinto river mouth bar dredging plan. While FEMA has already completed its initial debris removal mission, sediment brought by Hurricane Harvey still exists in the San Jacinto river mouthbar. To protect Houston, Kingwood, and Humble residents from future

flooding, it is imperative that the remaining debris is removed. “The City of Houston recently filed a Project Worksheet (PW) for debris removal as Category A work under the Public Assistance program,” the group wrote. “We urge you to use any and all necessary

FEMA resources to expeditiously review and approve the city’s PW. Delay will only increase costs and prevent FEMA from fully leveraging presently available dredging assets.”

Many times I’ve heard of our Christian life compared to a “path” which we take from birth to our heavenly home. Paul Bunyan wrote, long ago, a book on this subject called “Pilgrim’s Progress.” There’s another author, Hannah Hurnard, who wrote about a girl on the path of becoming a Christian, called “Hind’s

Feet On High Places.” Both books, although written years ago, represent some of the trials we may encounter on our pathway to God. I, personally, have gone through several times of drowning. God was my rescuer from all of them. Either God or His angels will protect us in many ways as we go along our Christian path. Even as a youngster, I’d find myself wanting to see the end of my path which would lead to heaven. As I grew into more knowledge of the Lord being at the

very end, I could see how He kept me in the middle of the path—not being led by the world to the right or the left- but sticking to the straight and narrow middle. Did I always do everything right? No. And then the Lord had a way of making me feel guilty about things I knew were wrong, so I quickly corrected them and asked for forgiveness. David knew God so well, he knew that God had counseled him, instructed him, protected him, and was at his right hand as He

said to the Lord, “You will make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand are pleasures forever.” Psalm 16:11. So even David knew God was in charge of his “path of life.” Every evening I pray for God to keep me on the right path for my life to show His love to all people. In Isaiah, God is trying to tell His people, Israel, how He brought them through the sea and caused their enemies to drown in the sea. Then God tells

them this: “Do not call to mind the former things or ponder things of the past. Behold, I will do something new, now it will spring forth; will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, rivers in the desert…The people whom I formed for Myself will declare My praise.” Isaiah 43: 18, 19, and 21. When we’re praying and looking for God to make a new path for us, we have to lay the past aside. It’s gone. Then He can place us in the middle

pathway and guide us by His grace and mercy. So we go into the path where we can keep our heart and eyes on what He has planned for us to do as a new thing. Even John the Baptist told the people this: “I am a voice crying out in the wilderness, ‘make straight the way of the Lord.’ as Isaiah the prophet said.” John 1:23. Through any trials that may come, we want to diligently keep our eyes on the prize and keep our feet on the straight pathway until Jesus comes.

Veteran of the Week

Lee Ashby, Montgomery, Texas

By Lew McCreary Born the son of a teamster in Missouri, Lee grew up in Montgomery, TX and is 75 years old. In January of ’91 just after the Gulf War ended Lee enlisted in the army through a delayed entry program that was available through his high school. He completed basic training at Fort Jackson, SC., then trained as a medic at Fort Sam Houston and was also

Montgomery County News has published VETERANS OF THE WEEK since 2014 numbering more than 200. The purpose? An endeavor to educate readers regarding the depth of personal valor and selfless sacrifice of patriotic men and women of WW2, Korea, Vietnam and Middle East deployments during their service commitment and the protection of the homeland. In particular these articles target younger generations that have not been adequately schooled in US history. WW2 still is the biggest event in human history and veterans of that world war are now in their 90’s so please thank them at every opportunity.

“checked out” as a single channel radio operator at Fort Gordon, GA. He spent eight years active military service during ’91-’99 and completed two tours in Korea where he advanced to E-4 primarily in radio repair. He took station at Suwon Air Base (maintenance unit) and Colburn Air Base near Seoul where he hung out within a signal battalion. Between

assignments he usually spent some time training at Fort Bliss. His main concern was equipment being transported to Korea and intended for the Patriot Missile System and they would be used to interdict and defend against the fury and destruction of the incoming North Korean SCUD missiles. In so doing he kept very busy keeping the communication systems

on line…24/7…during his tours at both Fort Lewis, WA and Tacoma during 1999…and that was where he separated from the military. His first job in civilian life was in security but also took some time out to build computers “on the side” …primarily the wiring component and for several years. That all came to an end in 2004. Then, still in WA he was involved in construction of homes in the Seattle area…and later to KS for a season as a QA technician a t Y o r k I n t e r n ational…once again in a managerial capacity. Lee was next employed by Lear Jet, primarily in their military sector until 2006 then returned to TX in 2014. This time it was with Several board members from The Rebel Joan of Arc Chapter United Daughters of TDCJ, the Texas Departthe Confederacy visited the Montgomery County News office to award Monte West ment of Criminal Jusand Megan Stultz a Certificate of Appreciation and to thank them for their contribution tice….at the Ellis and to their chapter. Wynne units. For the next

four years he dabbled in production technology for a firm in Conroe before starting his own business. He concentrates in logistics first and then consulting where he is today…and also has his own venture named Aquaponics. And what is that all about? In Willis, TX, he grows plants in water where fish also abound and “in their own way” they contribute fertilizer for the enhanced growth in his crop of healthy green plants. Would Lee recommend young Americans join the military? Why would he do that? This was his best opportunity to see the world at the expense of the US Department of Defense and also to accumulate wisdom for his own rendition of a personal “degree” in the area of liberal arts.

Currently Lee is a volunteer fireman in both Walker and San Jacinto counties, while in the evenings he continues to acquire college credits whenever possible and also to “consult” for a profit when the opportunities arise. Politically he is a conservative and once ran for public office as a Republican…but unfortunately was roundly defeated. Lee is a practicing Christian and a member of the Church of Christ in Montgomery. Most of his time is spent in the Reborn Chapel where he endeavors primarily to encourage various youth groups. A fairly recent visitor to the veteran’s group that meets each Wednesday at Poplar Business Park, Lee’s plan is to attend celebrations there whenever possible.
