HELLO READERS!

Summer break, sunny holidays, six weeks off school… it’s nearly here! Your children will be delighted and, while parents can also enjoy a break from the term time routine, there are a lot of days to be filled in the weeks to come!

In readiness, here’s our sunniest issue filled with local family favourites for guaranteed fun! Life moves at pace and so it’s important to maximise the precious time we have with our young children, away from the grind of work and chores. In these pages you’ll find perfect daily getaways to provide adventure, gorgeous scenery, and great family entertainment. Got small culture vultures or budding scientists in the family? Then head to one of our fantastic and free museums – all geared up for pint-sized hands and packed with superb, interactive exhibits and displays to keep curious young minds enthralled. We’ve also included excellent holiday club options for working parents who need extra childcare during the school breaks.

As well as big days out or even foreign travel, it’s important to have quieter days near home to re-charge too. You’ll find there are plenty of free town and shopping centre activities to enjoy – add in walks to the park and a picnic on the green and you’ll have the perfect recipe for a memorable summer!

Good luck to the Year Six leavers and their parents who are moving on to Secondary School – we hope your next chapter of school life is an exciting one! We’ll be back in September at the start of the new term, but in the meantime, enjoy the warmth, sun and fun that summer brings.

They want to ensure students leave Little Heath School with the skills, knowledge, understanding and personal characteristics that will serve them well in their next stage of learning, whether in further education or employment.

CHILDREN AT JUBILEE GEMS

AWARD-WINNING ECOEDUCATION FOR GREEN PARK DAY NURSERY CHILDREN

SERVICES

Nee Naw Nee Naw! This month Jubilee Gems Nursery welcomed both the Ministry of Defence Police and South Central Ambulance Service to their nursery! The children had a great time learning about all the incredible things they do for their local community. The police introduced their police dogs Kaiser and Joe and put their sense of smell to the test… sniffing out hidden sweets that were left around the nursery by a ‘Sweet Thief’! With the Ambulance Service demonstrating how they use their heart rate monitor and of course testing those sirens and flashing lights. Both visits were a fantastic learning experience, and it was the ultimate role play day for the children! Visit their social media pages to discover more: www.facebook.com/jubileegems Instagram: @jubileegems

From tending to seasonal vegetables and herbs in their allotment area, to creating habitats for wildlife to encourage garden biodiversity, there are exciting learning opportunities all year round for children at Green Park Day Nursery in Reading who are receiving an award-winning eco-education. As a result of their efforts, which include crafting with natural and recycled materials, learning about the impact of pollution in oceans using special water trays and taking part in litter picking initiatives in their local area, pre-schoolers from the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on South Oak Way are proud holders of the prestigious ‘Green Flag’ award from Eco-Schools, the highest accolade in the international scheme which is awarded for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices. Newbury Building Society’s

We want to see YOUR

photos!

Photography Competition is open for entries

You could win a £50 voucher of your choice* and have your picture featured in our 2024 calendar! Newbury Building Society’s resident photographer, Michael of Michael Harden Photography, shares his top tips to help you perfect your entry.

The best camera is the one you have

You don’t need the latest camera to produce amazing images! Any camera, whatever its age, will do. Get used to how it works, play around with the settings, and see how it affects your photos.

Look at the everyday in a new way

No object is boring if you’re creative enough. Get low or up high (safely) and you’ll see the world differently. A small tree can become a tower when shot at the right angle.

A picture is worth a thousand words

One of the most fun parts of photography is you can be a storyteller without ever saying a word. Look for moments of joy, the unpredictable, or even the unbelievable. The best photos always have a story behind them.

Rules? What rules?!

There are loads of books on how to take a photo (I know, I’ve read most of them!). You may hear terms like ‘composition’ or ‘aspect ratios’. These are great to know, but art is about expression, not following rules - dare to be different!

Have fun

Most importantly, have fun! The heart of everything we do in photography should be to have fun. Never stress the shots that you miss or what you could have done differently, just enjoy every second of it.

Find out more about Newbury Building Society’s Junior Photography Competition by scanning the QR code with your phone.

The closing date for entries is 3rd October 2023. Entrants must be aged 16 or under. *Photos must be taken near to one of our ten branches. *For full terms and conditions, please visit our website.
